00:07All right, that's it.
00:14Hi, my name is Jackie Tetley
00:16and I'm Senior Designer here at Endreams.
00:19Look at that!
00:20Not a scratch on her!
00:21They're good at their job.
00:23I'm going to walk you through some gameplay
00:25from our upcoming virtual reality adventure The Assembly.
00:28I can't even remember the last time I was outside.
00:30And give you a closer look
00:32into the game we are creating and the world
00:34in which it's set.
00:35You really don't get an idea of its size from out here.
00:37Oh, for God's sake.
00:40I thought you'd have more of a stomach
00:42for this stuff.
00:43What with your experiments.
00:45Look, my work's as humane as I can make it.
00:48But there are limits.
00:50The Assembly is a story-led,
00:52morally ambiguous adventure game.
00:55You play as two different protagonists.
00:57Assembly scientist Cal Pearson
00:59and inductee Madeline Stone.
01:02Both Cal and Madeline each have their own perspective
01:05and goals in the game.
01:06They're dropping like flies.
01:08Must be the heat.
01:10No, I have a theory about this.
01:11I think it's the cell towers.
01:14Listen to yourself. Cell towers.
01:16The chapter here is the opening section of Madeline's story
01:20as she is brought into the Assembly's secret bunker.
01:23Look, tonight's special guest has arrived.
01:26The great Madeline Stone in the flesh.
01:31She looks different than how I imagined her.
01:33Your first VR experience can be a little mind-blowing
01:35so it's really important to provide a gentle introduction.
01:38We've got a celebrity here.
01:39What odds are you going to give on her?
01:42On who?
01:43On her.
01:44Come on, you always run the book on the...
01:46In the game's opening you find yourself strapped to a gurney,
01:48like a trolley with wheels,
01:50which intentionally limits movements to your head.
01:53You think she'll do better?
01:55Wait.
01:57We've found this eases you into the virtual world
01:59and allows you to really soak up the surroundings.
02:02Shut up. I've read...
02:03So what is the Assembly?
02:05The Assembly is an organisation of scientists
02:07who operate in total secrecy.
02:10They're wholly dedicated to progress
02:12for the sake of progress.
02:14Without the interference of the rest of the world,
02:16they can achieve this even by morally questionable means.
02:20The Assembly operates in a bunker
02:21in an unspecified area of the Nevada desert.
02:24All Gamma Level Initiates on Level D,
02:26please lock your terminals and exit.
02:28The trials are about to begin.
02:30Built originally as a nuclear shelter,
02:32the facility has been upgraded with state-of-the-art equipment,
02:35but with sections still in need of maintenance.
02:38As it's a VR experience,
02:40this has changed the scale we've built the world in.
02:42Normally in a game,
02:44environments would be larger than in real life,
02:46but in virtual reality,
02:47the world and objects populating it are scaled realistically.
02:50I wouldn't tell anyone about this place.
02:53I didn't say anything.
02:56Just a work trip.
02:57Madeline sees the group
02:58as the only way to progress her research,
03:00which has reached a dead end
03:02following a sequence of tragic events.
03:04Let's just get Dr. Stone to her cell.
03:05While Madeline has agreed to their help,
03:07she was not expecting to be abducted by the Assembly who,
03:10in the name of secrecy and compliance,
03:13proceeds to induct her through a sequence of trials.
03:32This chapter is one of the early trials Madeline places in the game.
04:00The trials are designed to test the abilities of new inductees,
04:03and this has given us a great deal of variety to play with in terms of gameplay mechanics.
04:08Gotta say, I'm curious how you'll do.
04:10Look, off the record about this task?
04:13From logic puzzles, to more complex dilemmas,
04:16and dealing with nerve-wracking heights,
04:18all of which we've found become much more immersive using VR.
04:22First grab the two, uh, murder weapons.
04:25When you know who one of the killers is,
04:28you use a dagger on their dummy to, uh...
04:32See that justice is done?
04:34You got it.
04:36So I use the daggers to pick who's guilty.
04:39Very direct.
04:41This particular trial tasks Madeline with a spin on the Whodunit challenge.
04:46To find the two murderers who killed the scientist,
04:48she must find clues by exploring the environment and then,
04:51to identify the culprits,
04:54put a knife in their backs.
04:56I'd never kill him.
04:58After all, medicine is just applied science.
05:01I mean, it is annoying how they seem to change the rules every single year, but...
05:08In VR, however, you're no longer limited to exploring and looking around
05:12as you would in a first-person game.
05:14You can lean in closer, look around corners,
05:17even look under things.
05:19There's an awful lot of medication in this bag.
05:27Not only has this changed what we can do with the gameplay,
05:30we've also changed how we implement art in the game.
05:33If players can lean in,
05:35then textures on the models need to be more detailed than ever before
05:38and places you could never look with a normal camera need to be fully rendered.
05:41In many ways, the whole world needs to be much more realistic.
05:51A recording of an interview with the property magnate.
06:00This looks like some photos of the politician, the daggers and the murder scene.
06:05One of the things you may have noticed is that Madeline walks slower than you would expect
06:08from a traditional first-person game.
06:11What we have found in VR is that the player is much more comfortable walking at a realistic speed,
06:16rather than running at an exaggerated pace.
06:19This furthers the player's level of immersion,
06:22helping them to really believe they are present in the world.
06:25We don't want to give away any spoilers,
06:27so I'm going to skip this sequence and move along to one of Cal's chapters.
06:35Cal's chapters are different, set within the laboratory-like confines of the assembly,
06:39whereas Madelines are created by the organisation, often to dramatic effect.
06:45The chapters contrast with Madelines, not just from a gameplay perspective,
06:49but also story and tone.
06:51As the story progresses, Cal delves into the darker side of the assembly,
06:56determining the best, most sane course of action is to escape with evidence of their experiments
07:00in order to prevent a global disaster.
07:05Hello, Lab 12.
07:07Christ, you took your time. How's my avian sample doing?
07:11Hey Anton, good timing. I've gotta talk to you.
07:20A large part of Cal's chapters focuses on exploration and discovery.
07:26What we've found players want to do in VR is look around, explore.
07:33Even something as mundane as sticking your head in a cupboard can become a jaw-dropping experience in VR.
07:39We've aimed to make this as central to the game as possible,
07:42from the core gameplay to interesting distractions.
07:45Maybe even the odd easter egg too.
07:48R9, avian sample cells collected from the...
07:52Aw, shit.
07:54Right outside the bunker.
07:56Anton, you idiot. Don't tell me you're mixed up in this too.
08:00Chapters also include a number of features that are designed with VR in mind.
08:06A 3D microscope where you lean in and rotate a virus.
08:10Yeah, there it is. Cassius D.
08:15And the decontamination bath.
08:19It's astonishing how subtle things like particle effects and smoke become hugely impactful when you experience them in VR.
08:26Yeah, at least I screw up. Definitely go viral.
08:30This has just been a small glimpse into the assembly in its world.
08:35Over the months ahead we'll be sharing some of the moral choices facing players within the game.
08:39Some more of the trials and features designed specifically for virtual reality.
08:45As always, if you'd like to ask us any questions directly, you can reach us on Facebook, Twitter, or our
08:52forum on Reddit.
08:52We appreciate it.
08:55Chauvin D.
