00:00Take command of your fleet and set out to unite the galaxy in Sid Meier's Starships.
00:05Starships is an adventure-driven strategy game which combines episodic missions, resource management, tactical combat, exploration, and spaceship design.
00:16Travel to new worlds and complete missions on planets across the galaxy.
00:21Set in the universe of beyond Earth after the age of the seeding, players take on the role of fleet
00:26commander,
00:27leading their starships across the galaxy while making important decisions managing and building the worlds under their control.
00:34In this video, we'll introduce you to some of the systems of Sid Meier's starships
00:39and how you can master them to achieve your vision of a unified galaxy.
00:45Use energy to build new ships and modules.
00:50Build your ships to fill any tactical role from powerfully armored battlecruisers
00:55bristling with short-ranged cannons to fast laser-armed destroyers that strike at a distance.
01:02Or add fighter bays, turning your ships into powerful carriers.
01:06Your Federation scientists can research upgrades to your starship modules.
01:11You can also win a science victory by unlocking three Level 6 technologies.
01:17Use medals to construct planetary improvements, increasing the yield of that world.
01:22Or they can be used to build unique wonders that grant powerful bonuses to your fleet.
01:28Build seven wonders and win a wonder victory.
01:31Use food to start new cities on planets.
01:34As the population of the world increases,
01:37not only do you come closer to winning the population victory of 51% of the galaxy,
01:43but each world is capable of producing more resources for your Federation.
01:47At the heart of the game are the missions your fleet will undertake.
01:51Combat missions are turn-based.
01:53Each turn, your ships move and take an action.
01:56Firing weapons, launching fighters or torpedoes, cloaking or sweeping with your sensors.
02:02Narrow passages can occasionally open in these asteroid fields,
02:05allowing ships and fighters to pass.
02:08Take advantage of them, but be aware that the enemy will also do so.
02:11Your ships have a number of hit points and are knocked out when these drop below zero.
02:17Critical hits reduce a module's effectiveness, leaving your ship vulnerable,
02:21leaving you with a choice to make.
02:23Either take an action to repair these critical hits
02:26or use that action to fire on an unsuspecting target.
02:30Keep in mind, you can repair your starship with energy between missions,
02:33but not during the mission.
02:35There are also battle cards, which can provide you with bonuses in combat.
02:40Battle card activated.
02:41Some battle cards affect single ships for one turn,
02:44while rare and powerful ones benefit the entire fleet for a whole mission.
02:49Don't overlook these, as they may make the difference between defeat and glorious victory.
02:55While your crew are dedicated, long missions can take their toll.
02:59As your crew becomes fatigued, the performance of your ships also decreases.
03:03A fatigued crew of a powerful fleet can be wiped out by an enemy
03:08they would easily defeat if rested.
03:10At some point in your turn, you will need to decide if your crew needs a rest and shore leave.
03:16As you complete missions and special tasks for worlds, you gain influence.
03:20Sending a crew on shore leave will increase your influence with that world
03:24by one at the start of your next turn.
03:27When you gain four influence points with a planet, they will join your federation.
03:32Other factions may also try to recruit the same world to join them.
03:36You see competing influences here.
03:39Winning a game of starships will require more than tactical success in combat.
03:44You'll also need a plan for victory.
03:46Consider how to use the features of your worlds in combination with improvements.
03:50For example, this icy world produces extra science.
03:55Building the Cryptolab here will be more effective than building it on another world.
03:59Cryptolab operational.
04:01Plan for your victory type.
04:04If you have a small federation with powerful neighbors,
04:06you will be able to win through a science victory.
04:09If you have a large number of worlds, try for a population victory.
04:14There is an entire galaxy out there waiting for you and your fleet to defeat threats
04:18and bring a glorious new age to humanity in Sid Meier's starships.
04:23Thank you.
