Breathless / À bout de souffle (1960) — Jean-Luc Godard’s debut feature, a New Wave landmark (screenplay Godard from a treatment by François Truffaut; cinematography Raoul Coutard; music Martial Solal; editing Cécile Decugis) . Small-time crook Michel Poiccard (Jean-Paul Belmondo), obsessed with Bogart, steals a car and impulsively kills a motorcycle cop, then hides out in Paris and tries to talk American student Patricia Franchini (Jean Seberg) into fleeing to Italy . Their affair plays out between borrowed cash, stolen cars and long bedroom talks while Inspector Vital (Daniel Boulanger) closes in; Patricia finally tips off the police and Michel is gunned down in the street, dying with a last muttered line .
