01:41We are here to play Splatoon for you guys.

01:44We're going to work our way through some different content.
01:47We're going to show some online multiplayer.
01:48We're going to show some single player missions.
01:49But we're actually going to start with something we just showed you guys in the direct.
01:53Which is Battle Dojo.
01:54Which is local one-on-one multiplayer.
01:57Cool.
01:57Just kick it off.
01:58Yeah.
01:58Corey, why don't you jump right into it?

02:00So for those of you that have maybe not seen Splatoon kind of in depth.
02:05I'm going to spend just a couple minutes here kind of explaining just the basics.
02:08I'm playing on the Wii U game pad here.
02:11In Splatoon you control these characters called Inklings.
02:15They're kind of half squid, half humans.
02:17You can fire ink out of your gun there.
02:20You can, if you hold down the ZL button, you're able to transform into a squid, right?
02:25And with that you get some new abilities like being able to swim in your ink.
02:28You actually move a lot faster when you do that.
02:30You're going to jump out of it.
02:32You're also able to, like, if I spray up here.
02:36I'm having a little bit of issue with my control here.
02:39So I'm just going to re-sync my controller really quickly.
02:43So I sprayed the wall here.
02:45Normally I can't jump up and reach that.
02:46But as a squid, if you turn in, you can swim right up walls.
02:50Get a kind of good angle up here.
02:53Perch down.
02:54And in Splatoon you've got these Inklings.
02:56In the single player story you actually face off against the octopus arch rivals, the Octarians.
03:00But the main mode in Splatoon is actually called Turf War.
03:04You're seeing me kind of just splatter ink all around.
03:07And in that main online multiplayer, 4 versus 4, you're going to be trying to cover as much ground as
03:12you can in the time limit.
03:15Now, again, I'm playing on the gamepad.
03:17But normally you're going to be seeing the footage on the TV where the gamepad kind of acts as this
03:22overhead map,
03:23which we'll see a little bit later when we play Turf War.
03:25However, in this 1v1 local match, I've got the gamepad here.
03:31I'm using motion control.
03:32Ethan is playing with the Wii U Pro Controller on the TV right now.
03:37With that said, the rules of local multiplayer are a little bit different than Turf War.
03:42I'm actually trying to—
03:44Yeah, why don't you guys—you ready to start fighting for real?
03:45Yeah, sure.
03:45All right, why don't you guys start battling?
03:47Okay.
03:47And I'll sort of talk about what's going on.
03:49I may have already kind of—
03:51Ready?
03:51You know.
03:51Wait, Ethan.
03:52Oh, sorry.

03:53I thought we were going a long time ago.
03:55So, you can see here that—Ethan actually already had seven points, I guess, while Corey was talking about.
03:59The goal here, these guys are fighting one-on-one.
04:02And they're trying to pop as many balloons as they can.
04:04You're going to see these balloon spawn points.
04:06You can see the timer ticking down there.
04:07Ten, nine, eight.
04:08And what's going to happen when that hits zero is that the balloons are going to spawn where these sort
04:12of beams of light appear.
04:14And these guys are going to be racing to get to the top of the balloons first, and they're going
04:17to score points by doing that.
04:19What I love about this mode is that even though you're playing online, it's four-on-four.
04:23So there's like constant chaos, and you're never without somebody to try to splat.
04:27But these balloon points are drawing you together.
04:29So even though it's one-on-one, you guys are sort of never without some action.
04:34Corey already—even though Ethan sort of cheated his way to a seven-point lead, it looks like Corey's already made
04:38up some ground.
04:38He's up 13-4.
04:41Waiting for these balloons to show up.
04:42Oh, we've got these crates here.
04:44Corey's about to pick up a canned special.
04:46The loadout is a little more simplified.
04:48Oh, I got a sprinkler. Check out the sprinkler!

04:53Oh, no, I couldn't.
04:54In an online multiplayer, you're picking a weapon loadout that has a main weapon, a sub-weapon, and a special
04:58weapon.
04:58In the one-on-one, it's simplified a bit so that you have a main weapon and a sub-weapon.
05:01But the special weapons are actually what you pick up off the ground and sort of get a random one,
05:05which you're able to use.
05:07You see Corey's using a nice use of swinging his own ink there.
05:10Oh, gosh!
05:11Ethan, you're falling a little behind here, 14-4.
05:13I know! That's why I had to get a lead out front.
05:16I don't know if it's going to help me, though.
05:18Corey's been practicing these Battle Dojo skills.
05:21Yeah, the good news is if you take me out here, I'm actually going to lose more than one point.
05:25So the points are tied a little bit. Not reflective of how much you have there.
05:32Boom! I like how you say it.
05:33I'm going to let you catch up on your business.
05:34Right.
05:37And you can see that, like we said at the outset, the turf you're covering with ink isn't counting for
05:42points here like it would in Turf War, but it's certainly helping.
05:44The more ground that you have covered, the more advantage you're getting by being able to use the environment to
05:50your advantage.
05:51And I think it's important to point out that as you guys are going to see as we hop into
05:54these different, we're going to show some multiplayer, some single player, and this local battle is that each game mode,
06:00I think, especially, you know, as this game comes out and everyone's getting their hands on it for the first
06:03time, it's really important to learn how to play.
06:05I mean, you sort of develop this symbiotic relationship between being the inkling and then turning into a squid and
06:11covering maps with ink and then swimming in that ink and using it to your advantage.
06:15And all the game modes really work together to sort of develop your skills.
06:20So it's 24 to 1 here.
06:21We've got 47 seconds left.

06:45So let's hop straight from this into a single player mission.

06:55Ethan's going to play some multiplayer later.
06:56We'll see if his Battle Dojo failings, you know, if maybe he learned a little something he can apply online.
07:02I'm going to hop into, I'm going to play through a single player mission mode.
07:04As soon as I hop into it, you guys can maybe sort of set the scene for how that goes.
07:10Yes.
07:11And I'm going to, you know, it's sort of a, I think what players are going to find is that
07:15there's a lot to do in Splatoon,
07:17either online if you're battling multiplayer or local.
07:19So, you know, you've got the single player campaign, you've got the local one-on-one battles,
07:23and I think both just really have a ton to offer.
07:26No, they definitely do.
07:27So I'm hopping in here.
07:29I'm going to let you guys set the scene as I try to do my thing.
07:31Sure.
07:31So in the single player mode, you've actually got a character named Captain Cuttlefish,
07:36who introduces you to kind of the campaign where you're going to be fighting the Octarians underground.
07:42We talked about those octopus arch rivals.
07:44Right.
07:44The levels themselves have a, you know.
07:46Well, Octarian alert.
07:47Oh, no.
07:48This is where you're going to go for your story beats for the game.
07:50This is the Octocopter.
07:50Let me smoke this guy real quick.
07:52The Octocopter.
07:53You see these guys.
07:53The Octarians are kind of sad.
07:54Look at this guy.
07:55He's literally just a tentacle with a hat.
07:57So their Octopus is, you know, in spirit.
07:59They're so ugly you cannot look away.
08:02I'm losing my ink abilities here to swim and then dash jump across.
08:06So a lot of these levels too, right, they're kind of teaching you a little bit,
08:10but there's content that's exclusive to the single player game.
08:12I like to stop and just ink a tree once in a while just because, I mean, I get distracted
08:17by the tree.
08:17That's a good point though, Corey.
08:18Like I think people are going to take the skills that they learn in single player mode into multiplayer.
08:25And they'll find that you can trade those skills back and forth.
08:29You kind of get to go at your own pace.
08:30Nice.
08:31It's like armor there.
08:32Safety first.
08:33I'm going to be using all of my ink skills that we just talked about.
08:35There's an ink rail here.
08:37So, yeah, when you spray this rail, you'll automatically activate it.
08:41You can turn into your squid form.
08:43For Morgan travel.
08:44He's notorious for trying too many tricks on the ink rail.
08:47But I'm going to talk less.
08:50So Captain Cuttlefish is giving us some advice there in the bottom.
08:53You're saying kind of acts as your narrator.
08:57And your guide tells you about what you're facing.
09:00Yes.
09:00Sorry.
09:01Way to take out those octocots.
09:02And you'll see that as I'm taking my time, you know, I've just knocked those guys out.
09:05But you always want to take a little time and sort of, you know, I'm covering some turf to my
09:08advantage.
09:09You're seeing that he's making sure to spray down kind of a lane of ink so he can get that
09:13dash jump instead of just jumping without ink down.
09:16So check this out.

09:19And I should point out this is only the third mission in the game.
09:21This is one of the first three that you'll be able to play.
09:22So, you know, it's not as crazy as it gets later in the game.
09:25But, you know, I've got five octarians up here.
09:26There's two octotroopers.

09:28When you have to deal with multiple enemies at once, things can get out of hand really quickly.

10:12These stages in the single player mode are basically great sort of puzzle platformer challenges for you to complete.
10:20And they get more complicated as you go through story mode.
10:24And you can see, I mean, there's already a ton going on here.
10:27And like Morgan said, this is just third stage.
10:29It's like one of the 5Ks I did trying to get up that wall.
10:31This is an Octo Trooper.
10:31If I put the Ink down.

10:34I had to get helped over.
10:36Only I could have turned into a squid.
10:38And as you progress further into enemy territory, you're going to notice they've already covered the ground with their ink.
10:44So you have to think about it.
10:45Oh, these are my favorites.
10:46Right around on their little vehicles, spreading their ink.
10:49And they try to cover up as I put them down.
10:52Look at it.
10:52He kind of gets bogged down in my ink color.
10:53He's doing his little dance.
10:54Yeah.
10:54He's so intent with just putting that ink down that he's not even noticing I'm sneaking up behind.
10:58Those aren't the smartest Octarians.

11:00It's going to take you to your next area.

11:03We're in the home stretch on this stage here.
11:05We can kind of see these Zapfish right up ahead.
11:07I'm always taking time to, you know, lay some down.
11:10Have you mentioned the Zapfish yet?
11:10Yeah.
11:11Not as much.
11:12So the story in this single player campaign finds this giant Zapfish, which is the kind of power source of
11:18Inkopolis, which is home of the Inklings.
11:22And the Octarians stole it.
11:24Stole the giant Zapfish.
11:26Great Zapfish.
11:26Took it underground.
11:27We've got to get that guy back.
11:28And it is your objective to recover the Great Zapfish.
11:31It's getting a little more serious here.
11:32I've got an Octobomber.
11:32Each stage in the game also has a small Zapfish to rescue, which we're trying to get us to have
11:38some serious time.
11:38See, look at this guy.
11:39No one's ever seen this guy.
11:40That's an Octobomber.
11:41Look at this big boy.
11:42Look at that.
11:43How is he being held up?
11:44That's a lot of power with that repeller to hold that guy up.
11:46So I got an Inkzooka here to finish the level.
11:49I actually already took him out.
11:50I didn't need it, but I'm going to use it to lay a little more ink down to clear my
11:52way to the goal.
11:54I can see that Zapfish up there waiting for me to save him.
11:59And again, always use my ink.
12:02I'm transfixed by your ink dive, and you're doing a great job.

12:10So this is what each stage has one of these that you're trying to collect with your ultimate goal of

12:25Talk about something else we saw in the Direct.

12:26Amiibo.
12:27Splatoon Amiibo.

12:37I'll give Morgan the Inkling Squid.
12:39Oh, this is so cool.
12:40So we saw that there are three types of Amiibo.
12:42This is the first time I've ever seen him in real life.

12:45Well, you'll have to give them back.
12:46Oh, man.
12:47We can't keep these?

12:49These are great.
12:50These are the three different kinds we have.
12:52Let me give them back to you guys.
12:53I might have to buy.
12:54I know that I opened my Amiibo.
12:56Ethan, I think, keeps these at home.

12:59So the way that Amiibos work in Splatoon is really neat.

13:01The way that the single player works is you just saw me play a mission.
13:04When you beat missions in the single player campaign and then you scan in your Amiibo,
13:08the Amiibo will actually challenge you to replay that mission with a different sort of challenge.
13:13Yep.
13:13So each Amiibo might challenge it to use a different weapon.
13:16We didn't point this out as I was playing through, but in the single player you're always playing with the
13:19same ink gun.
13:21The Splatter Shot, right?
13:21The basic hero shot.
13:23Yeah, it's a version of the Splatter Shot unique to single player.
13:27And the Amiibo will challenge you to replay those levels with a different weapon.
13:30Exactly.
13:30And it does change the gameplay up more than you'd think.
13:33And by completing those challenges you're going to unlock some exclusive gear for each Amiibo,
13:38which is really cool.
13:38So here I am back in that same mission I just played.
13:41We just tapped the Inkling Boy is what we just did.
13:44So we're on to an Amiibo challenge.
13:45I've got a roller now.
13:47And at first glance this is going to look like the same map that I just played, which it is.
13:51But when you've only ever played these missions with one weapon and suddenly you're going through it with a roller,
13:56it's a different story.
13:57It's a different field for sure.
13:59So one thing with the roller that he's got now is, first of all, you can just hold down the
14:05ZR button, right?
14:06And you can just keep on rolling.
14:07And it feels so good.
14:08It feels really good.
14:09But it acts as a little bit more of a melee weapon.
14:11It doesn't have as much range.
14:13There's very little range that allows it.
14:14Those octocopters and octobombers that you had no problems with.
14:18And he's also showing us like that secondary attack.
14:21Oh, the little fling.
14:22The fling thing.
14:22Still not great range, but you can get some things that are in front of you with that.
14:26But see, like before I kind of jumped right over this part, I'm actually not as scared of this.

14:30You just run in there.
14:32There you go.
14:35And I'm collecting some power eggs here.
14:37We didn't talk about that either.
14:38But you can see my counter going up on the upper right.
14:39Those are power eggs I'm collecting.
14:42Those are what I use to level up my basic hero gear.

14:48The gear you power up and those eggs you run in single player are totally different
14:51than the gear that you will be, you know, buying and using in multiplayer.

14:56So that's a little taste of amiibo challenge.

14:58It's great because it gives you a chance.
14:59Each amiibo has different challenges.

15:24Let's do some online turf war multiplayer.
15:27Watching you play with that roller just made me want to grab the controller.
15:30It is time to get busy.
15:31Are you saying you're going to use a roller?
15:34I think I'm going to start with a roller.
15:36So we're going to show you guys some different weapons online.
15:38There's a wide variety of stuff.
15:39There is.
15:40As people get their hands on this game, you're really going to find that
15:43different weapons suit you in different ways.
15:45Different weapons are more useful on different maps.
15:48It just creates a huge variety of ways that the matches can play out depending on what the
15:54different members of each team have selected is going to determine all kinds of different
16:00play styles.
16:01Yeah.
16:01For sure.
16:02So you're going with the roller?
16:03I went with the roller.
16:05Man, the first time I ever experienced the roller.
16:07Or even saw the roller.
16:08I mean, it just looks so much fun.
16:10You've never had a shooter style game with the roller.
16:12You've never really had a need to come around.
16:13It would be like playing with a giant sword, but instead you're dragging it along the ground to do what.
16:19Here we go.
16:20Turf War.
16:21So again, we talked about this being the main mode of online.
16:24Main mode of Splatoon, right?
16:24We showed this to be three, but we only showed it with one.
16:27We showed it with the Splattershot.
16:28It's the bread and butter of Splatoon, right?
16:31Corey, you start fighting.
16:32We'll remind everyone at home.
16:34I know there's people that know a lot about Splatoon.
16:35There's people that might be tuning for the first time.
16:37This is Turf War.
16:38It's a three-minute round.
16:38You can see the timer going down.
16:40The match will not end before those three minutes are up.
16:41Each team is battling to cover as much of the brown of this whole level in their team's color ink.
16:47And that can change totally dynamically.
16:49We can see on the smaller screen you guys are seeing at home, that's Corey's gamepad screen.
16:53And the gamepad is absolutely crucial to Turf War.
16:55You can see that the only way to really tell until the end of the match which team is winning
16:59or losing is...
17:00You're trying to judge.
17:02Right now I would say orange is up, I don't know, 53%.
17:06I have no idea.
17:07That was crazy.
17:08Did you see that special?
17:08That was the killer whale.
17:10Oh, that was one of our teammates' special weapons.
17:12Look out.
17:13So as I'm laying down my ink right here, you're sitting in the upper right.
17:17I'm filling up my special meter.

17:19And once I get that filled up all the way, I'm able to click the right stick.

17:28But your special meter, it's going to go down a little bit, but you're not going to lose all that

17:36I tap a location of one of my teammates who's alive,
17:38I can do a super jump.
17:40Right back into the action.
17:41And get quickly back into the action without waiting for my spawn point to get back.
17:44We should also mention that each, no, you chose the roller.
17:48You found a nice chunk of unclaimed turf up here.
17:50I turned into a squid there.

17:53You've got the killer whale is ready.
17:54So this is my special.
17:55Once I drop it down, anyone unlucky enough to be in that range there.

18:22That's his main weapon.
18:23But it's important to mention that each main weapon you select comes as part of a set.

18:28With a sub weapon and a special weapon.

18:31And what's your special right now?
18:32My special is the killer whale.
18:33You've got the killer whale.
18:34My sub, I need to get some more ink real quick.

18:39Yeah, you can see that his ink is refilling faster as you duck into your own ink.

18:45Hopefully we'll get that meter up and you can get your killer whale off.

18:53That's like a classic moment.
18:54I've had that where two people have rollers and you're sitting there and you're right next

19:14This is always the point of the match where I'm just like eyeballing the gamepad screen completely
19:17because I'm trying to figure out how close is the match.
19:19You see how curiously he was hammering to super jump.

19:24He was kind of waiting.
19:25They've pushed you guys back a bit into your own area.
19:28So I haven't seen your gamepad screen in a bit so this is going to be totally a surprise.

19:37We've got Judd the Cat at the end of each match.

19:46And that last one you came up against somebody else with a roller and they just got the jump on

20:19I hope that as people are watching these matches, I mean we're going to show three matches of turf war
20:23with three different weapons.

20:24Which is just a tiny amount of the weapon sets that are available in the game.
20:28And I think that it's hopefully going to become clear that the dynamic of like the team you're on, the
20:34way the match is going, what weapon you have can really change like the way that you play.

21:38can just fire that lane, create that quick lane.
21:41All of your teammates can swim in that ink and, you know, get moving a lot.

25:05Like Splat Charter kind of being long range, Roller being the close range extreme.
25:10Jet Squelcher is going to be great for that mid-range attacking and for putting ink on the ground.
25:14This one also does come with different sub-weapon and specials.
25:19So I believe you've got the splash wall with your –

29:32That said, ranked battle, the rules are going to be a little bit different.
29:34As you said, splat zones is one of the modes.
29:37And the rules here is you're going to try to claim a piece of territory and hold it as long
29:42as you can to count down time.
