00:10Hello there, welcome to Getaway. Coming up we'll show you why Porakai is the best known island in
00:17the Philippines. This right here, these crystal clear blue waters might just be the reason for
00:22that. We'll check out the heritage listed village of Gundaroo. I could get lost for hours amongst
00:29all these treasures. But first up, how about a little bit of surf and turf on the New South Wales
00:34coast?
00:47Coffs Harbour on the New South Wales mid-north coast is a family favourite holiday destination.
00:55Famed for its endless coastline and fertile hinterland. And today I'm enjoying both.
01:03To start, I'm heading 30 minutes inland, deep into the Arara Valley for an outdoor adventure.
01:16When you think of Coffs Harbour, you probably think banana followed closely by beach. But let me tell you,
01:24there is far more to this mid-north coast town than bananas and beaches. Giddy up. Hi Willow.
01:33Staying gathered, staying set. Good job everybody. We're just going to be going down to the left here.
01:41I'm saddling up for a gentle two-hour rainforest and river ride. This is such a beautiful area.
01:48It feels so peaceful. It is only one of two places where the Great Dividing Range meets the sea between
01:54here and up north and far north Queensland. So having the beautiful Coffs Coast and the hinterland
02:00and this beautiful subtropical rainforest enjoying, you know, a wonderful activity like horse riding,
02:06you're in for a bit of a treat today. You could even bring your children here.
02:11Look, you can. I've trained these horses so that they're not overly herd-bound. What that means is
02:16we deal with mostly beginners. But then there's always experienced riders that want to have a canter.
02:21And so my horses aren't going to take off just because the hotshot rider wants to have a go.
02:27So I think that's something that I'm pretty proud of, you know, that they've got the little
02:30string of horses trained so that they accommodate for all level of riding.
02:36After taking us through the gentle rainforest trail, Chris promises a unique experience for all.
02:44I know that you love the rainforest, but how nice is the Arumblum River?
02:47The river is so beautiful. Absolutely. And the summer months, what will we be doing?
02:52We're swimming. We're getting off our horses. We're in the water with them.
02:57They love it just as much as we do. Oh, yeah.
03:01Get everybody into the water. That's it.
03:06Nice chance for them to have a little rest. I don't mind if they put their head down and have
03:11a drink.
03:12A bit of deeper water. Oh, look out. Someone's going to have a play.
03:17I don't mind. She obviously doesn't mind. Thank you, Isla. Thank you.
03:24I know she's going to have a good old drink.
03:36The Coffs Coast has a variety of beachfront resorts, but if you're keen to stay closer to town,
03:44the observatory apartments are ideally located just five minutes from the jetty.
03:50There is a range of options from one up to three bedrooms, all with generously sized kitchens and balconies.
04:00For a romantic escape, the Ocean View King Spa Studio features water views.
04:12The observatory apartments are a short stroll from the jetty and some of the area's leading restaurants,
04:19including Latitude 30, which offers one of the best ocean views.
04:26Today, we've got some lovely fresh oysters from Tasmania. We've got some local yellowfin tuna,
04:31which was only landed yesterday. And we've got lovely local king prawns,
04:34which are just done with some garlic and oil and butter and served on a sourdough.
04:37And you were telling me this dish particularly has been here since day one.
04:41That was our day one dish. I reckon we do about 10,000 portions of that a year.
04:45I need to taste this. Well, here's cheers. Cheers.
04:51Yeah, good.
04:53That is good.
05:00Coffs Harbour really is a surprise package with its pristine hinterland that literally reaches
05:06right to the sea. This place oozes laid-back coastal vibes that instantly make you relax.
05:13And its seafood and this view, well, that's pretty incredible too.
05:25After the break, we're in beautiful Boracay.
05:28When water is this clear, you just want to get amongst it.
05:36And we're there.
05:41Every day I go places in my head, darker thoughts in my mind.
05:45Boracay is probably the best known of all the islands in the Philippines.
05:49And this right here, these crystal clear blue waters might just be the reason for that.
05:54And we've found a spot where you can get your own slice of island paradise away from the crowds.
06:07The archipelago of the Philippines is home to over 7,000 islands.
06:12Boracay sits in the centre of the country, an hour's flight from the capital, Manila.
06:20The archipelago of the Philippines is home to over 8,000 islands.
06:21Crimson Resort and Spire Boracay has prime position on its own stretch of private beachfront.
06:33I've got to tell you, it doesn't matter if you want to kayak, if you want to swim,
06:38if you want to snorkel, anything. When water is this clear, you just want to get amongst it.
06:52It doesn't matter if you want to swim, it doesn't matter if you want to swim.
06:52While location is, of course, Crimson's number one attraction,
06:55its signature buffet breakfast comes in a very close second.
07:00Any hotel or resort worth its five-star rating needs a five-star breakfast.
07:04And this right here, this totally fits the bill.
07:07They have every type of cuisine and, of course, plenty of unique finds as well.
07:13Pumpkin corn rice porridge, anyone?
07:20The Brekkie Spread Eartha Resort Aconda Nast Award for 2025.
07:25Something the executive chef and his team are very proud of.
07:30It should be sort of like not only breakfast, but culinary experience.
07:35So, and that's what we are trying to achieve. So, you have a little bit of everything.
07:43The island of Boracay is divided into several tourist zones known as stations,
07:48depending on your budget and the type of holiday you're after.
07:52Crimson Resort is located in what's known as Station Zero,
07:56the quietest slice of luxury and seclusion on the island.
08:00So, as well as the amazing location, what else is it that makes Crimson so special?
08:04Yeah, of course, imagine arriving from the airport, right? We will meet our Crimson staff,
08:10straight to our lounge and straight in our beachfront. Then, upon arrival in the beachfront,
08:15you will see the scenery of Crimson Resort and Swabaraka. It's very relaxing, family-oriented resort.
08:22And when you're here inside the resort, you don't want to go outside of Crimson Resort and Swabaraka.
08:28Don't walk away from me.
08:30Crimson Resort is set over almost three hectares and has a range of rooms, suites and villas
08:36to suit every traveller.
08:40Don't walk away from me.
08:44From those with epic views of the ocean below to these beachfront villas with private plunge pools.
08:51Oh, I tell you what, it is great having your own private sanctuary, but when you're ready to get
08:57amongst all the action, the real world is just a few steps away.
09:07The resort's beachfront and main pool area is where you're guaranteed to spend most of your time.
09:12But once a week, it transforms from this tranquil oasis into a party zone.
09:30I've got to admit, when they mentioned a phone party here at the resort pool,
09:35I thought of something a little crazy, but being a resort that caters to all ages,
09:39it's a lot more family-friendly.
09:42That feels like a big giant bubble bar and everyone's invited.
09:50And when you're ready for a more peaceful soak,
10:00the resort has a fully equipped spa to indulge in your own private bliss bubble.
10:16After the break, I'm enjoying a little wind down in the country,
10:20just 30 minutes from the nation's capital.
10:23Oh, I can see why that's a winner.
10:40You know that feeling when the calendar's full, your mind won't stop racing, your to-do list has a to
10:51-do list?
10:51Well, I've found the ultimate reset button.
10:55All you need is a tank of fuel, an open road, and a little town called Gundaroo.
11:04Just 30 minutes from Canberra, this heritage-listed 19th-century village makes for an easy day trip to the country.
11:11Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
11:14It's the kind of place where every wall has a story to tell.
11:19Like those in the Cork Street Café, which were once the old police stables.
11:25I hear this place has the best pizza around.
11:29Let's see.
11:31Mmm!
11:35Ten out of ten.
11:39Gundaroo may be small, but it's big on character.
11:44The Sally Paskin store has been welcoming visitors since 1886.
11:54I could get lost for hours amongst all these treasures.
11:58Named as a homage to the original general store owner,
12:02Sally Paskin's is now filled with antiques and their own range of homewares.
12:09A short walk along Cork Street is one of Gundaroo's draw cards.
12:13Everybody say say something, say something, say something.
12:17Oh, I can see why that's a winner.
12:20Classic cold climate.
12:21So that's what people come out to have.
12:23Yep, absolutely.
12:24This is our flagship Shiraz for the cold climate stuff.
12:28And what a beautiful place to come out and enjoy your wine.
12:31Amazing. There's not many venues like this in the region.
12:34The award-winning Gundog Estate cellar door is next to Grazing Restaurant
12:39in the beautifully converted stables of the Old Royal Hotel.
12:44OK, so here we have the Gundaroo Riesling.
12:47OK, but Gundaroo, so the grapes are local.
12:49Grapes are from here, yeah, from the Winemakers property.
12:52So we handpick these.
12:55Oh, yeah, I can feel all that hard labour.
12:58Mmm. Absolutely.
12:59It was all you.
13:00Yeah.
13:01I find I can say that.
13:02That is delightful.
13:05For another taste of the village's charm, meander up to the Gundaroo Inn.
13:10I've been here 50 years this year, so almost a local.
13:14Meet Ron.
13:15He's known as the unofficial mayor round these parts.
13:19Gundaroo is a very unusual place.
13:21The only difference is that council doesn't run anything.
13:23Really?
13:23It's all run by the village itself.
13:26So what we've got, we've only got about 500 people.
13:28We've got 30 community groups.
13:30OK, so it's got a really big, you know, community spirit here.
13:34Oh, it's fantastic.
13:35You'll find plenty of yarns and country hospitality at the pub,
13:39along with a menu that may surprise you.
13:42You know what, Ron?
13:43I wasn't expecting this for the pub.
13:46Momos?
13:46Oh, it is.
13:48It's just fantastic.
13:52Mmm.
13:54That's unreal.
13:57Look at those flavours.
13:58I'm a whole food.
13:59I eat the whole rather than...
14:00I was trying to be a lady, but I should have just taken your lead.
14:04Long time since I've been a lady.
14:07I've also taken Ron's lead on a few places to visit just beyond the main street.
14:15Bushfield Farm offers camel rides through scenic paddocks, a fun outing for the whole family.
14:29And for those who prefer creativity over camels, at Old St. Luke's Studio, renowned potter Ian Jones turns clay into
14:38art inside a converted church.
14:41So you live and have a pottery studio in a four-marked church with a graveyard.
14:47Pretty interesting.
14:48How did you end up here?
14:49I was living in Gundaroo and this was available, so I bought it for a surprisingly small amount of money.
14:57You fell in love with the place.
14:59I fell in love with the place.
15:01The once abandoned 1848 stone church was lovingly restored by Ian and now hosts classes, open studios and gallery visits
15:11by appointment.
15:12Gundaroo as a place to visit is fantastic. As a place to live, it's fantastic. So for me, it's the
15:18community. You know, I moved here in 1979 and I haven't left because of that sort of sense of community.
15:25And you won't be going anywhere.
15:27And you won't be going anywhere.
15:27Well, I've got a cemetery.
15:28Yeah, you're set.
15:36After the break, our Antarctic journey continues.
15:40If you're a little bit adventurous, scenic will get you out and into the action at every opportunity.
15:55Welcome back to the trip of a lifetime. We're on board the six-star ultra-luxury scenic eclipse in one
16:02of the most remote and spectacular locations on the planet, Antarctica.
16:13These excursions aren't mandatory. You can sort of pick and choose as you go along. But the whole point is
16:19to get out here and see this stuff. I mean, look at that glacier.
16:23So if you're a little bit adventurous, scenic will get you out and into the action at every opportunity.
16:31And best of all, you'll have an expert from scenic's discovery team with you every step of the way, from
16:38marine biologists to naturalists and even glaciologists like Sam.
16:45There's so many different facets of the Antarctic that we all love and it's hard to beat the penguins and
16:51the whales.
16:51But for me, what drew me to this place initially and the single thing that I love the most about
16:57it when I come back is the ice.
17:00There's just nothing, there's nowhere else on earth that even comes close to the ice that we have in Antarctica.
17:07What are the little bits called?
17:08The little guys, so the smaller pieces like these ones around us are called bergy bits and even smaller they're
17:16called growlers.
17:17Bergy bits.
17:18Bergy bits is actually the technical term.
17:21That's a scientific term.
17:23That is a scientific term.
17:27As well as a full fleet of zodiacs, kayaks and stand up paddle boards, Senior Eclipse houses a submarine.
17:35And two six seat helicopters to truly immerse yourself in the location.
17:48The view Antarctica from the sky is really a life dream for me.
17:55I mean, I've got glaciers going out in front of us and there's incredible icebergs.
18:06I mean, it's pretty easy to understand why you come and fly here.
18:10It's an absolutely unique environment.
18:13Unlike anywhere else in the world, the vastness of it all and the ruggedness, the barrenness of it all just
18:19really draws to you.
18:20The challenges of the weather, the challenges of the landscape makes it really, really rewarding to fly here.
18:38From helicopters to fine dining, it's as far from your everyday as you could get.
18:45And that's what makes this such an incredible trip.
18:51Well, we're down here at the ends of the earth.
18:53But every evening, because of the selection of restaurants, I'm transported to a new destination every time.
19:03This one is Lumiere, the French fine dining restaurant.
19:06And like all the venues on board, it's truly top notch.
19:22Well, this morning we emerged out of a huge fog bank to these extraordinary cliffs.
19:28And now we're right inside what was the ancient island.
19:31This is a caldera, about 200,000 years old.
19:35And the last eruption here was only in the 1970s.
19:39They call it Deception Island.
19:48Ice, glaciers and wildlife I was expecting.
19:51But an ancient volcano amongst this landscape is truly a sight to behold.
20:00From an ancient caldera to the cutest of chinstrap penguins, each day on board is unexpected and overwhelming in the
20:08best possible way.
20:13I've been surprised, you know, watching them walk, how kind of clumsy they are and yet so agile in the
20:21water.
20:21Well, I guess I'll answer that with a question. How would you walk if you had your knees up in
20:25your body?
20:27But, I mean, after all, they're birds.
20:30Yeah.
20:30They're seabirds.
20:31And they're maybe even more so a fitting name because they literally fly underwater.
20:36Yeah.
20:36They do.
20:39Gentries might be a little bit more melodious.
20:42Really?
20:43Yeah.
20:43They've got a sweeter song.
20:45I would say so.
20:46And these guys, it's more of a sort of a donkey squawk?
20:49It is a little bit of a squawk, yeah.
20:53Why don't you, if you do the chinstrap, I do the gem twos.
20:57Okay.
20:57All right?
20:58No!
20:59Ah!
20:59Ah!
21:01Ah!
