00:16Welcome to The Piano where today we've brought you to one of the greatest
00:20landmarks in international music, Broadway Shopping Centre. Look it's not much of a
00:27music mecca just yet but wait till we've fired up our piano, I assure you you are in for some
00:33razzle-dazzle.
00:37Here on Gadigal land, a line-up of talented everyday Aussies will once again gather at
00:43our piano. They're gonna love you. To delight passing shoppers. And with music comes magic.
00:53You'll get goosebumps. Have your heart broken. And your faith restored.
01:07As you now know, there's a twist. Our pianists won't just be performing for the public.
01:15Attempting to hide in a room full of mannequins are two of Australia's most iconic musicians.
01:21Okay. It's kind of what I expected, if I'm being honest, being in a shopping centre.
01:27The first is the internationally acclaimed concert pianist Andrea Lamb.
01:31Wait, here's the new guy. There we go.
01:33Who's joined by multi-award-winning, multi-instrumentalist Guy Sebastian.
01:38I think we should call him Bob. That's what he'd do if you put him in a pool.
01:42At each location, they have the difficult task of selecting one pianist for the opportunity of a
01:49lifetime. The chance to perform in concert at the City Recital Hall in Sydney. Three incredible
01:56pianists have already been invited, with just two more spots left to fill.
02:01I haven't been this excited to be at a shopping centre since the Boxing Day sales. This is The Piano.
02:17Hello. Hello. Look at you and your friends. Your headless friends.
02:22It's not where you thought you'd be when you heard, hey, you're heading to Broadway.
02:25I know. Well, welcome to Off-Broadway.
02:27We're off-off-off-Broadway.
02:29Only a couple of slots left for the concert. What are you thinking of?
02:33Lots of pressure.
02:33I think we have a good amount of variety already, so I think that we can just look for
02:37whoever has that inexplicable something that we both respond to.
02:42Anna, I think we need someone who can put on a show.
02:45What's really refreshing about this experience for me is that it's not competitive.
02:49It really is just about the impact that The Piano had on all of these people's lives.
02:54Sorry.
02:55Did I squash your very expensive fingers?
02:56No, no, no. I shoved my thin finger into the shed.
02:59Oh, my gosh. I know. My God.
03:01You've smashed your fingers.
03:02That's the equivalent of her going.
03:04Well, good luck, everybody.
03:06All right. See you soon.
03:07See you.
03:08Okay.
03:09First of the day.
03:10What do we have?
03:14My name is Peretti. I'm Samoan. Blessed to be a big brown dude that loves to eat food.
03:21My wife pushed me to come in today, so thank you, Milo. Thank you, wife.
03:26Sorry.
03:27Let the man through.
03:29He looks more like a piano removalist.
03:31Oh, he could, like, lift up the piano.
03:33I wouldn't have thought you'd have to fight your way through.
03:36Amanda, Peretti.
03:37Hi, Peretti. Come and join me.
03:38Lovely to meet you.
03:39Is that still big enough?
03:40Yeah, it should be all right.
03:40Can it be okay?
03:41I've never seen that piano look so small.
03:45What do you do for a living?
03:46So, I'm currently a chaplain at a high school and primary school.
03:49I'm also a former professional rugby player, too.
03:53You are the rugbyest of rugby players.
03:54I should have known the way you made your way through that crowd.
03:57Yeah, yeah.
03:57Oh, wow.
03:59Yeah, that's cool.
04:00How come you've got all your teeth and no broken nose?
04:02Just blessed.
04:03And your hands, they're beautiful hands.
04:05He's got some big hands.
04:07His reach will be huge.
04:09Are they completely different skill sets, rugby and playing the piano?
04:12Anyone knows that plays the piano, there's a lot of practice and a lot of hours involved.
04:16Rugby's very similar.
04:17But don't tackle the piano.
04:19I think I'll be all right.
04:20Nah, I'm not.
04:21So, you're no longer a rugby player?
04:23I retired about five years ago and just to look after my family, I had children young,
04:28my wife and I, so I'm a father of five.
04:32Five kids.
04:33What a machine.
04:34How old were you when your first child was born?
04:36I was 17.
04:37Wow.
04:38Funny story, I rocked up to the hospital with my school uniform and-
04:42For the birth of your baby.
04:43For the birth of my baby.
04:45A lot of life is lived.
04:46Do you have a piano at home?
04:47No, I don't.
04:48This will be the first time where my children, they sort of watch me just play as me.
04:53Well, I know they'll be in your heart as you play today.
04:55Can't wait to hear it.
04:56I'll be over there.
04:57Cheers, thank you.
04:58I have no idea how Freddie's going to play.
05:00I'm really curious.
05:02That's going to be a great shot.
05:22Oh, that's a good choice.
05:24Great song, yes.
05:30Stevie's not easy to play too.
05:32That's true.
05:38The definition of all of the fingers, really good.
05:42Yeah.
05:44There's a lot of like natural movement from his body so that the weight goes into the keyboard,
05:49there's no stiffness or tension.
05:51Yeah, he's so relaxed.
05:53He's so relaxed.
05:53He's right in it.
05:57So good.
06:01It's so relaxed.
06:01My partner and I are high school sweethearts.
06:04She's my best mate.
06:07Everything's for her.
06:08She's patient and works with the children and help raise them on rugby trips away.
06:14So she's amazing I
06:17Love the fact that she convinced me to just keep following through with my piano playing. I love it
06:23So thank you, baby. I love you
06:34Thank you so much. We loved it you're really interesting to have him in the concert. Yeah
06:39Like you can imagine him doing that for example
06:42But then putting some percussive elements around it or just something that takes it to that next level. I think
06:48so, too
06:50Hello, who's your mate Rosie? Hello, can I hold Rosie? Yeah
06:55Oh, what are you doing here? We're filming a show called the piano
07:00Does Rosie like piano music? Yeah, she does. She likes all music. She's going to hear some music soon
07:05So why don't you hang around? I better go to Coles. I'll come back. All right, come back. Take Rosie
07:09into Coles and then come back
07:11Okay, I'll see you in the birdseed aisle. All right
07:18Okay, Broadway, who are you giving us next?
07:22This guy's a bit too casual. You never know
07:25No, it's not him
07:28She's walking with purpose. It's always the purpose walkers. It's true
07:32Sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry. Oh, thank you
07:40Hello, I'm Amanda. I'm Belinda
07:42Hi, Belinda. Don't you look beautiful? Come and sit down
07:44Hi, thank you
07:45Tell me about you
07:46I'm a mum to two beautiful children who are here today
07:50I started playing piano when I was four and I actually used to compete against Andrea Lamb
07:55I have never heard of her
07:58Oh
08:00Your arch nemesis is here
08:02Oh, I wonder where she's been
08:04And then being a pianist, dexterity was on my side, so I became a surgeon
08:10Oh, wow
08:12I've been practicing as a breast cancer surgeon for about 12 years
08:17There are so many things that I love about my job
08:20So we're about to take out a pre-cancerous breast lesion
08:25I'm very fortunate. I've chosen an all-female team
08:28Which makes the patients very comfortable
08:33I feel it is a real privilege to be able to help these women and to see them beat this
08:39thing
08:40Belinda is a superhero. She's amazing
08:43Well, I feel a little inadequate
08:45I know
08:47What are we doing with our lives?
08:49Belinda, I cannot wait to hear you play
08:51Thank you
08:54I'm feeling a little bit nervous today
08:56It's been a long time since I've played the piano in public
09:00So really special to have a lot of support
09:03Are you one of her patients? Please come and join us
09:06Oh, wow
09:08How are you going?
09:09I'm doing great, thanks to Belinda
09:11Oh, are you the anaesthetist?
09:13Yes
09:13Come on in
09:14Oh, I love this
09:16Hello
09:17Hi
09:17So you've met before obviously
09:19Oh, I
09:20You might have been asleep
09:22This is such a beautiful moment, I think
09:25To have your worlds collide like this
09:27Yeah
09:27Look at this sharp dressed family over here
09:30How do you feel when you watch your wife play?
09:32When she plays the piano, that's her happy place
09:34And I can tell when she gets home
09:37That she's had a challenging day
09:39When she sees patients with similar age kids
09:42And similar stage to her
09:44And her relaxation is playing the piano
10:10She has a lovely approach to the piano
10:18And the way that she's phrasing is so beautiful
10:20So clean
10:32Everybody knows somebody who's affected by breast cancer
10:37And music is something that can support and encourage
10:41And lift their spirits during difficult and challenging times
10:47I'd like to play today's piece for my patients
10:53For the ones that have fought and won
10:56To the ones that have fought and lost
11:01The ones that are fighting
11:04The ones that are fighting
11:05The ones that are still yet to fight
11:18Absolutely beautiful
11:21Wow, that was great
11:22That was awesome
11:24Take a bow
11:26Wow
11:27Is Belinda our piano player for the concert?
11:30She could be
11:31She has that something that can't be taught
11:33Yes
11:33It's like this very beautiful sense of phrasing and line
11:36And rhythm and pulse
11:37I can definitely picture her at the concert
11:39Oh, that was absolutely beautiful
11:42Thank you
11:42How did you feel?
11:44Oh, nervous
11:45I think surgery was easier than doing that
11:46Thank you for coming today
11:48We've loved it
11:48Thank you
11:52It proves that not all superheroes wear capes
11:55That's true
11:56Some wear scrubs
11:57Some wear scrubs
11:58That's true
12:01Let's see who's next to perform on Broadway
12:05I hope you're coming to see me
12:07Because you look like a character
12:08I am
12:10I know that person
12:11Really?
12:13I'm Amanda
12:13Come and join me
12:14Hello
12:15How do you do?
12:15Oh my gosh
12:17Paul Fluffy Sinclair
12:19That's definitely him
12:20Do you want me to call you Paul or Mr Sinclair or Fluffy?
12:23Your choice
12:23I get sent this bloke all the time
12:26He is so funny and he's quite big on socials
12:30My full name is Paul Bradley Sinclair
12:34Fluffy's my nickname
12:35And yeah, I don't know how this happened
12:38But I've become a bit of a social media celebrity
12:40Hey, look at this storm coming in
12:43He literally talks about the most mundane things
12:46Should there be pineapple on a pizza?
12:49But he somehow narrates it in the most colourful, hilarious ways
12:53He's brilliant
12:53Scroll on if you don't want to find out this fact
12:56You're famous for your catchphrase
12:58Love catchphrases
13:00I'm going to give you permission to say it to me right here, right now
13:03There's a lot of profanity, so
13:06Hey
13:07Hey
13:08Hey
13:08Hey
13:09Hey
13:13They won't air that, will they?
13:16Hey
13:18My videos are all about my travels
13:22But three years ago I decided to sell up everything
13:26And now I live on the road
13:29What's it like living out of my camper trailer?
13:32I love it
13:36Oh, she's rank, ripe
13:38Tell you what
13:40So I'm based currently just outside Maitland in New South Wales
13:43Doing waste management at a music festival site
13:46Or the green team we call it
13:48You've got to get pretty close
13:50Just cleaning the bins, cleaning the toilets
13:53It's not the most glamorous of jobs, but I'm just good at it
13:57Night night toilets
13:58Fluffy
13:59Pleasure to meet you
14:00I'm so glad you're here
14:01Lovely to meet you
14:02I'm going to stand over there
14:03It's time for you to let Fluffy off the chain
14:05Okay
14:05Get ready
14:06Buckle up
14:07Buckle up
14:09Okay, what's Fluffy going to play?
14:21Well, I wouldn't have picked that
14:23All Fluffy's in Clare playing Amazing Grace
14:26So random, I love it
14:33Oh, Fluffy is a beautiful player
14:36The message I try to get across in my videos is just be yourself
14:43And playing the piano helped me do that
14:46Yes, I love it
14:49It's your classic case of don't judge a book by its cover
15:05Thank you
15:07I'm so excited to meet him
15:08I'm definitely getting a selfie
15:11I bet I could grow a beard like that if I wanted
15:15Flamboyant boast
15:21My name's Caitlin, I'm 14 and I'm from Sydney
15:25Tell me about your family, I can see your family over here
15:27I came here today with my two brothers Lachlan and Ethan
15:30My dad and my...
15:32You're the big sister?
15:33Yeah
15:33Are you bossy?
15:34Sometimes
15:36She does not look bossy
15:37How long have you been playing the piano?
15:39I've been playing it since I was four
15:41It's like the best time ever whenever I play
15:43Especially when I see how other people become so happy
15:46Whenever they hear my music
15:48Oh
15:49Especially Lachlan
15:54Oh, now
15:55Here, catch
15:553, 2, 1, catch
15:57Almost
15:58It's okay
15:59Lachlan's really special to me because
16:01He'll always brighten up my day
16:03You got this
16:043, 2, 1
16:05Catch
16:07He always just lightens up the room
16:09You can tell the atmosphere always brightens up
16:11Whenever he walks into a conversation
16:12If I lift you up
16:143, 2
16:15Oh
16:17Oh
16:17Good job
16:18I'm so grateful that he came into this world
16:20And I can teach him so much
16:22I teach Lachlan a lot
16:24You teach him music?
16:25Yeah
16:26Because people wouldn't teach him
16:27Why wouldn't they?
16:29Because he had down syndrome
16:30And they thought that he was less capable
16:35I think that maybe the other teachers
16:38Maybe were a little bit too shallow
16:41If you do this then you run out of fingers
16:43If you run out of fingers what are you going to do?
16:45Because I know that he's really capable of doing anything he wants to do
16:49Now go
16:51And that also I wanted Lachlan to have the same opportunities that I had when learning the piano
17:03Is piano teaching something you'd like to do or is it just for Lachlan?
17:08No I want to do piano teaching for like a lot of people because I'm figuring that there are other
17:12people out there like Lachlan who can't find a good teacher
17:15So if I can teach them that would be really really good
17:18That's really lovely
17:19What are you playing today?
17:21I'm going to be playing an Etude in C minor by Rachmaninoff
17:24It's Lachlan's favourite piece actually and it's quite fast
17:27Lachlan really likes fast pieces
17:29This is a really hard piece
17:31So I'll leave you to Rachmaninoff and I'll rag off
17:33Yeah
17:34Good luck Caitlin
17:35Thank you
17:36Etudes are designed to be tricky
17:38Like they are really difficult exercises in written form
17:42So someone's playing this
17:43Yeah
17:45They've got to be good
17:46Yeah
17:46Hi Lachlan how are you?
17:49How are you feeling watching your sister play the piano in this big shopping centre?
17:53A little bit nervous
17:54Is it? Are you a bit nervous for her?
17:56Well this is a big day that we're celebrating for your sister
17:59Alright let's get ready
18:01This is going to be great
18:11Ooh
18:12Wow that's fast
18:14Yeah it's great
18:19Lachlan always dances whenever I play
18:24Look at Lachlan
18:28It doesn't matter what I'm playing
18:30He'll just dance
18:33And sometimes he'll even request songs
18:35Like I'll be in the middle of playing
18:37And then he'll be like play it
18:38Shut up and dance with me or something
18:40That's one of his favourite songs
18:44Yeah
18:46Is this part of the song? No
18:48No
18:48It's like a medley
18:57Yes Lachlan get it
18:58Come on
19:05There's not a person out there that isn't smiling right now
19:14And her technique is actually really good
19:17Her definition is great those big octaves
19:20Also just the way that she's approaching the piano is really fantastic and organic
19:30Katelyn can play
19:32Yeah
19:33But what is so incredibly beautiful about this
19:37Is the relationship with her and Lachlan
19:40And how what she does has an immediate impact to someone that she loves
19:49Oh well done
19:51Yeah
19:53Lachlan and Katelyn
19:59Sergei Rachmaninoff was a brilliant pianist, a composer and conductor
20:03And like Katelyn
20:04He amazed his teachers at a very young age with his jaw dropping abilities
20:08He also had quite possibly the largest hands in classical music
20:12Which is what makes some of his pieces so hard for young players
20:15He could span 12 keys from the tip of his little finger to the tip of his thumb
20:20But wow you should have seen him catch a football
20:25Yeah
20:26Vertmaninoff was also exceptionally skilled at improvisation
20:30Just like our next amateur pianist Saoirse
20:42i love how improvising it just offers you so much freedom to explore i just lose myself in it and
20:52after i came out as a trans woman the piano it was there for me it helps me express myself
21:03it's improvised but there is some structure to it like that little repeated melody she just played
21:08which i like it's beautiful
21:12as a dad i'm incredibly proud of saoirse and it's just so wonderful to see her happy and flourishing
21:22in life i'm just overjoyed to see the way in which music is so central to that and the piano
21:33is her instrument of choice
21:50here at our public piano people from all walks of life are swapping their shopping for the sounds
21:56of sonatas so time now to meet today's youngest performer yeah nice to meet you my name's
22:02spencer and i'm from armadale so in new south wales near tamworth i'm 10 years old tell me about your
22:09family um yeah so that's dad that's mom that's otis so he's five years old odors and that's harriet
22:15well hello to everybody and how long have you been playing the piano um two and a half years
22:19we'll be three in february okay it's very specific
22:23oh so cute so what's going on with you i found it very roughly tell me what's happened um so
22:30term two
22:31i was diagnosed with crohn's disease oh my gosh it's like inflammation that attacks your intestines
22:37your stomach and whatnot spencer has been sick for probably the last year without us really knowing
22:44what was going on and it wasn't until five months ago that he got really sick with malnutrition he
22:49started to lose a lot of weight and he could no longer walk that's when they found out that he
22:54had crohn's disease and he had it in extreme form what a scary time for you all yeah and yet
23:00here you
23:00are playing this public piano in a big public place yeah you're gonna be okay with the pedals yeah i'll
23:07be
23:07fine you let me know if you want me to do the pedals for you it's like driving you should
23:11see how badly i
23:12drive yeah god for the crowd they're gonna love you i love this kid he's so great well hello what
23:23a
23:24year you guys have had we have how are you going to feel watching him right here right now i
23:28might
23:28cry of you quite entitled he's about to start get ready today i'll be playing rainy saturday by emma
23:36it's a classical piece and i just love classical that's my thing
24:01so elegant
24:06when i was in hospital there was no piano so i couldn't play or anything so it was very sad
24:17it's the worst thing seeing your child so sick
24:20there was a point where he couldn't even stand on his feet he was in so much pain
24:24and missed playing piano which was really devastating for him because it's his outlet
24:31then he starts to get better and you start to see a bit of a light at the end of
24:34the tunnel
24:36and you realize that it's going to be tough but you can get through it
24:46having a piano next to me it just makes me feel better i feel very free when i play
24:52this fence is amazing it's one of the hardest things on the piano is to create a sense of line
24:58and cantable and legato when they're in the right hand in the melody and he does that so beautifully
25:03yeah and he's 10. yeah he's a little star
25:14oh wow
25:19that was unbelievable he is spencer take a bow
25:30spencer's definitely up for consideration for the concert he is very special i've never seen
25:35anyone quite like spencer i'm so proud you were great from complex classical pieces to contemporary
25:42pop bangers the piano can do it all not bad for an instrument that's over 300 years old
25:53oh she can play yeah
26:00got the crowd going
26:08i was just coming here to get some eggs
26:14i love the piano because the joy that the music brings to people i think is pretty incredible
26:19i love the world
26:30hi hi are you enjoying your front row seat for the music we certainly are the smells of this shop
26:36are extraordinary i'm like the royal family i don't have any money with me but some other person
26:40will come and pay a little bit later sure they will well there you go no worries have a great
26:45day thank
26:46you why don't i always put the piano close to all the delicious food it's not my fault oh yum
26:57my name is meryl i'm originally from iran and i've been in australia for three fantastic years
27:04maybe the best years of my life i love australia who's here with you today
27:10i've got my parents over they came especially for this from iran they've traveled here yes to see
27:17you today yes have they been to australia before no it's the first time especially came for this moment
27:24it's so cool i come from a line of pioneer people starts with my mom she was so in love
27:32with piano but
27:33lots of music was forbidden in iran especially for women there were no music shops around
27:41so she drew all the keys of the piano on a piece of paper and she stuck that to a
27:47table that's how
27:49she practiced for a while just pressing a piece of paper yes that's amazing phenomenal and when they
27:56found a piano they sold their car they borrowed money to get that piano and they had to wrap it
28:02as a cupboard and they carried a mirror along so it's pretending it was part of the cupboard yes
28:10if they got caught there would be so much trouble it was very scary wow yeah it's hard to imagine
28:18you
28:18had to be secretive about music living in australia and having such freedom you sometimes take it for
28:24granted but my mom wouldn't give up on music i mean that's why she's my hero what an experience for
28:33them and what an experience for you it's truly good luck i can't wait to hear you thank you
28:38what a beautiful intro to australia for the mum and dad your daughter spoke so beautifully
28:46about the role you have played in her life and how she wants to honor you today
28:50thank you yes it's a great day for us too oh my mom looks so proud all those years where
29:01you all had
29:03to play in private does it feel liberating in some way to see morale before here in a big shopping
29:10center
29:10i think that she's playing for all the world
29:44i love how this composition has almost a strummed
29:47quality to it like it's a stringed instrument
29:57as a female in iran there are lots of things that you can't do so the song i'm playing today
30:04is an ode to what a long way the persian women have come especially my mom
30:13she paved the way for me so where am i standing right now is because of what she did
30:21this is a song of hope and survival when some people play music it feels like they're speaking
30:31rather than playing an instrument it feels like she's speaking through this she's breathing it
31:03i love she got to share that with her mom
31:06i'm so thrilled for you both that was so beautiful thank you for sharing your story with us
31:11thank you amanda thank you thank you for morale and her family
31:18it's an incredible moment just really coming full circle yeah family
31:28she's saying that she's so excited and her heart is beating and yeah she's very excited
31:43look at you two making a spectacle of yourself these are my sons have you just come to lurk
31:49Yes, well, can I please borrow your credit card quickly?
31:52Oh, good on you.
31:52All right, look, I've got to get back to the piano.
31:54Try and get a bit of culture.
31:55Would it kill you?
32:04OK, Broadway.
32:05I don't know what we're going to get next.
32:10Could it be him?
32:13He looks nervous, doesn't he?
32:15He does look nervous.
32:17Or maybe he just hates shopping.
32:21Hello, I'm Amanda.
32:23Adriano, nice to meet you.
32:24Adriano, come and sit down.
32:25It is him.
32:26How are you?
32:27I'm very, very nervous.
32:28He looks like he needs to take a couple of deep breaths.
32:32I'm just a bartender in Northmead,
32:34so I have never played in front of strangers before.
32:39So it's definitely a first.
32:41Well, we're all ready to love you.
32:43Tell me a little bit about you.
32:44I live with my mum and my dad and my little brother, Michael.
32:48Did you grow up playing the piano?
32:50Yeah, I did, but sort of stopped for a few years.
32:55And a bit later on in my life, I sort of picked back up again.
32:59What made you pick it up again?
33:00So in 2019, my brother passed away.
33:11Christopher was my younger brother.
33:14Thank you, everyone, for coming.
33:17Thank you for all the gifts.
33:18Oh, no love, y'all.
33:20It's been a good 18 years.
33:23He just had turned 18 four days before.
33:26He was involved in a construction site accident.
33:32Christopher Casaniti died after he was crushed
33:34by a collapsing scaffolding at Macquarie Park.
33:38It obviously broke us all.
33:42We all cope in our own different ways,
33:45but I cope by playing the piano.
33:56I feel connected to Christopher through the music.
34:02When we were younger,
34:03me and my brothers used to have a toy rock band.
34:07We would be singing Old MacDonald Had a Farm.
34:11When I play the piano,
34:12I see all of the good memories,
34:15the time spent just me and him.
34:19I miss my brother every day.
34:23I wish I could hug my brother one more time.
34:26I would do anything to give him the tightest hug.
34:38What are you going to play today?
34:40I'm going to play See You Again by Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth.
34:43It was one of his favourite songs.
34:45After he passed away for his funeral,
34:47we actually played it as we were doing the slideshow.
34:52And that was one of the most powerful moments
34:55I've ever been a part of.
34:57I can't wait to hear you play,
34:58even though I'm going to need the tissues.
35:00Adriano, thank you.
35:01I just want to give Adriano a big hug.
35:04See.
35:04It's such a big moment for him.
35:10I'm hoping that I can make Christopher proud.
35:13Just to feel a little bit closer to him.
35:26It's been a long day
35:32Without you, my friend
35:35And I'll tell you all of
35:56It's been a long day
36:00Without you, my friend
36:03And I'll tell you all about it
36:06When I see you again
36:09Yeah, Adriano
36:10You've come a long way
36:12From where we began
36:15Oh, I'll tell you all about it
36:19When I see you again
36:22So let the light
36:24Guide your way
36:30Hold every memory as it goes
36:34And every road you take
36:38Will always lead you home
36:44There's so much happening
36:46In his mind, in his heart
36:55My boys find it extremely hard
36:57To speak about Christopher
37:00Even sitting at the dinner table
37:02We don't speak about Christopher
37:06For Adriano to honour his brother
37:09Through music
37:09He's one of the most beautiful things
37:11Oh, I'll tell you all about it
37:14When I see you again
37:17When I see you again
37:32In the past, it has been difficult
37:35To talk about Christopher
37:37But doing stuff like this really helps
37:46I think if Christopher was here right now
37:48He'd probably say
37:49You did a good job
37:50And I'm really, really proud of you
37:52I'm watching this with my two sons
37:54Who've come to watch our filming today
37:57And standing next to Patrizia
38:00Adriano's mum
38:03Well, it's hard
38:08Christopher would absolutely love that
38:10That was beautiful
38:23Ah, here we are
38:26She's waving at you
38:28Hello and welcome
38:29Hello
38:30Two stairs
38:32And then there's a stool
38:34Can I help you sit down?
38:36You're okay?
38:36Yeah
38:36Your hands are lovely and warm
38:40I'm Amanda, what's your name?
38:42I'm Iconyx
38:43Iconyx, what a cool name
38:45Is that mum that came with you?
38:47Yeah
38:47I've noticed you walked in with a cane
38:49And your mum was helping
38:50I lost my eyes to retinoblastoma
38:54Which is a sort of eye cancer
38:56And I lost that when I was a toddler
39:01Wow
39:02Iconyx is totally blind
39:05When she was just a baby
39:07It was noticed that something wasn't right
39:09And unfortunately found out
39:11That she did have cancer in her eyes
39:13So end result is that she has prosthetic eyes
39:17Which are beautiful
39:18It was a hard decision for the doctors
39:21But it's meant she's alive
39:22And she's living life fully
39:23So really grateful for that
39:26Has your vision impairment held you back at all?
39:29Never
39:30It's not a disability for me
39:32I reckon it's the least interesting thing about me
39:35I always say I'm a musician first
39:37Indigenous second
39:38And then I'm blind
39:39Oh, I love that
39:40Yeah
39:40I have a synesthesia
39:43So I feel things more with the music
39:45Than I think people with sight do
39:46So I can relate it to colours
39:49I relate people's voices to instruments sometimes
39:52That's extraordinary
39:53When you're listening to me now
39:54What are you picking up?
39:56Your voice reminds me of like a cello
39:57Deep but rich
39:59Like honey
40:00Oh, that's the most beautiful thing
40:01Anybody has ever said to me
40:04Synesthesia I think
40:05Is another sort of superpower
40:07Another lens to see music in the world
40:10I cannot wait to hear you play
40:12I'm going to go and stand with mum
40:14Iconics
40:15Over to you
40:17I wonder what Iconics would think our voices sound though
40:21Kazoo?
40:24Iconics is quite remarkable
40:26You're going to get emotional?
40:29Yeah, probably
40:30I usually do
40:35Oh, here we go
40:46When you were here before
40:52Couldn't look you in the eye
41:17Beautiful tone
41:19Yeah
41:19Old song
41:24The sweet voice
41:28It's not an easy feat tackling a Radiohead song
41:31There's complex modulations
41:33Lots of beautiful layers
41:34Yeah
41:39As a vision impaired person
41:41You can feel like an outsider
41:42This song really reflects that
41:45And that's why I think it really connects
41:50She's running out
41:53She's run, run, run, run, run
42:00But even if I could see
42:01I'd be doing what I'm doing
42:03I love the music
42:04Being vision impaired
42:06Just opened up all the other senses
42:07And made it much more strong
42:16She's doing a great job
42:17Absolutely
42:22What I love most about Iconics
42:24Is her spirit
42:26She's taught me
42:28Don't let anyone put you in a box
42:30And say what you can do or can't do
42:50Iconics, mum was going the blob and I have a bit too
42:53You are a superstar
42:55It's such a beautiful gif that Iconics has
42:58This show kicks me in the feels all the time
43:02I'm off to get another biscuit
43:05Feeling proud?
43:07I'm just a bit hungry frankly
43:09Not proud yeah for sure
43:12But mainly hungry
43:13I want donuts now
43:19As our day draws to a close
43:22And the shops begin to shut
43:23Oh about to finish lads
43:25This is like an entirely new experience
43:28I've asked all of our amazing amateur pianists
43:30To pull up a pew one last time
43:32Hi we're sitting next to someone
43:343, 2, 1 and go
43:37Because in just a moment
43:38I'll be revealing that our experts
43:40Have been secretly watching on
43:42And they will invite one of them
43:44To perform at a very special concert
43:47Oh here she is to save the day
43:49Oh well
43:51Broadway has delivered
43:53Who's it going to be?
43:54Can we just take more than one?
43:56How many times have we had this discussion?
43:584?
43:58Andrea no
43:59You know very well the rules
44:01One per location
44:035?
44:04This is why you're paid the mediocre bucks
44:06Is that two of you have to come up with one
44:08I loved Belinda
44:13What she does is so important
44:15And then to be able to decompress
44:17Through such beautiful music
44:20She's a complete superhero
44:23One that keeps popping up for us is Caitlin
44:28She's really excellent
44:30She can play
44:31And then also her relationship with Lockie
44:34And her family
44:35It was so beautiful
44:39One of my favourites was Ferretti
44:41The double door fridge
44:42I know
44:43And he carries the world on his shoulders
44:44And he can
44:48Played great
44:49Didn't he just?
44:50Yeah
44:50It's such a different approach right
44:53Because we've got some classical players
44:54He was all sold
44:55All sold
44:56All sold
44:57All sold
44:57All sold
44:58All sold
44:59We will make a decision
45:01We will
45:02We have to
45:02You've read your contract
45:03Just give us about 6 hours
45:04That's true
45:04Yeah
45:06Okay
45:07Let's get to work
45:16Yay
45:18Well hello
45:20Hi
45:21How are you all?
45:22Good

45:23Nice to see you all together
45:24Have you had the best day ever?
45:26Yeah
45:27Oh I hope you have
45:29You may have had an inkling
45:31That you've been watched
45:34But you don't know by who
45:37And you don't know where
45:39Shall we reveal our little secret?
45:42Yeah
45:42Just down there
45:43In a room full of headless mannequins
45:45Are two of Australia's
45:48Best musicians
45:49One of course is concert pianist
45:52Andrea Lamb
45:53Wow

46:16From one of those inner west sephras
46:18With those like

46:21Yeah

46:43Of course
46:46Broadway brought it
46:47I felt like we got a glimpse
46:48Into everybody's lives a little bit
46:50And the deepest parts of themselves
46:52With some people
46:52And it was just a real privilege
46:54To be a part of that
46:55You may know
46:56We're putting together a concert
46:58At City Recital Hall
47:00And we want all of you guys
47:02To come as our VIP guest
47:05Oh awesome
47:06And there's one person

47:21This is the best day
47:23Of my whole entire life
47:24Congratulations
47:25Thank you
47:26My favourite parts
47:27Where you were playing
47:27And you kept looking back
47:29To Lachlan
47:29Yeah it's so difficult though
47:31Because I had to like
47:31Swish my head around
47:32Yeah but you didn't miss a beat
47:34I'm really happy
47:35With where we landed
47:36With choosing Caitlin
47:37To perform
47:38Oh don't you dare look back
47:39Just keep your eyes on me
47:41I feel like anything
47:42We throw at her
47:44She's going to handle
47:45With such class
47:46Us and dignity
47:46She just really brought
47:48This presence here
47:49At Broadway
47:49This woman is my destiny
47:51She said
47:52Woo woo
47:53Shut up and dance with me
47:56Oh the day today
47:57Has been amazing
47:58Knowing how much music
47:59And piano means to us
