00:00Thank you so much for joining us.
00:30Welcome to your program.
00:36Kwentuhan pong masayang, inyong matutunghayan ngayong hapon.
00:40Because our guest is an actor.
00:44Pangalawa po ay, he is part of Spring Awakening, a musical.
00:51Pangatlo po, he is the only son of the great Lea Salonga.
00:58Naitai Kapuso, please welcome Nick Chan.
01:04Thank you very much.
01:06Thank you so much.
01:07I hug you.
01:10Thank you for being here.
01:12Of course.
01:12It's my pleasure.
01:13Thank you for doing this conversation.
01:14How are you doing?
01:16I'm great.
01:17I'm doing good.
01:17I'm excited.
01:18I'm a little scared.
01:19Okay.
01:20First time you did this at GMA7.
01:21Yeah.
01:22Oh my gosh.
01:23Oh my gosh.
01:24Okay.
01:24Do you see yourself in the future doing television, movies?
01:30I'd like to.
01:31I'd love to.
01:32But, you know, I mean right now it's been very theater, you know, on stage stuff.
01:38But I'd love to for sure.
01:39Yeah.
01:40You start somewhere.
01:41Yeah.
01:42Somebody was telling me, I think it was Ardy, our head writer.
01:44Parang nakita ka niyang nakapila sa isang audition?
01:47You were in a queue?
01:49Yes.
01:49You were in a line?
01:50I auditioned like everybody else.
01:51You auditioned like everybody else?
01:54Sa Universidad daw ng Pilipinas?
01:56Talaga?
01:57Hindi mo sinasabi, anak ako na Lea Salonga?
01:59Siyempre, hindi.
02:00If I were you, I would do that.
02:01That idea horrifies me.
02:03Ah, it does.
02:04It does.
02:04Talaga, natatakot ka?
02:05Ako gagamitin ko yun.
02:06Hindi natatakot ako.
02:07Gagamitin yun ni Tito Boy.
02:08You know, I'm related to Lea Salonga.
02:11No, no, no.
02:12It may save me from dancing or singing, but I'm good.
02:15No, I'm joking.
02:16Hindi mo ginagamit yun.
02:18That idea horrifies me because it, number one, it'll stain my reputation.
02:24Because that's not the kind of person I am.
02:26That's admirable.
02:28And I'd like to believe that I don't need my mother to get into stuff, you know?
02:33I'd like to believe that I have the chops enough to be able to do it on my own.
02:38And I believe you.
02:39I believe you.
02:40But just like a mother, you have that courage.
02:42She also doesn't want me to.
02:43That's also that.
02:45She very much so is a firm believer in like, you don't need to use my name to do this.
02:50And you shouldn't.
02:52This is not a fair question, but I want to ask this.
02:56Okay.
02:56What can you do that you can't?
02:58What can I do that you can't?
02:59I can do Shakespeare.
03:01Oh.
03:02I can do Shakespeare.
03:03Really?
03:05I can tell you a story.
03:06Please.
03:08Great then.
03:10My national Shakespeare competition sa high school ko.
03:14My school is participating.
03:15And my friend is like, hey, you should do that.
03:17I'm like, okay.
03:18I prepare with my tito, who's a Shakespeare, you know, whatever, like a fangirl.
03:24Tito meaning Gerald?
03:25No, no, no.
03:26No.
03:26Another tito.
03:27Okay.
03:27Yeah, another tito.
03:28And he really was really hard on me with this rehearsal for this thing.
03:35And the date comes and I'm like super unprepared.
03:39Early pala hindi ito date.
03:41And we were like, okay, let's just do it right now.
03:45Like, I do my monologue.
03:48No, what did you do?
03:49I did a monologue from Henry IV.
03:52Henry IV.
03:53Henry IV.
03:53Okay.
03:54Act II.
03:55And then I did a sonnet, 1.30.
03:57I remember the number.
03:58And I just did it.
04:00We took two takes.
04:01Can you do it now?
04:03I remember.
04:04Let's stand, yeah.
04:05Grave.
04:06Yeah.
04:08Oh, God.
04:09Let me see if I remember the sonnet.
04:11Yeah.
04:12What about the monologue?
04:13The monologue?
04:15Do not think so.
04:17You shall not find it so.
04:19Okay.
04:20And God forgive that so much had swayed your majesty's good thoughts away from me.
04:23Okay, let's take it from the start.
04:25From the top.
04:26The monologue.
04:27Okay.
04:27Do not think so.
04:29You shall not find it so.
04:31And God forgive that so much had swayed your majesty's good thoughts away from me.
04:36I will redeem all this on Percy's head.
04:40And in the closing of some glorious day, be bold to tell you that I am your son.
04:46Where I will wear a garment all in blood and stain my favors in a bloody mask.
04:51Which washed away shall scour my shame with it.
04:55And that shall be the day when air it lights.
04:58That this same child of honor and renown.
05:02This gallant hotspur.
05:03This all-praised knight.
05:04And your unthought of hairy chance to meet.
05:10This, in the name of God, I promise here.
05:15The which, if he be pleased, I shall perform.
05:18I do beseech your majesty may salve the long-grown wounds of my intemperance.
05:23If not, the end of life cancels all bands.
05:28And I will die a hundred thousand deaths.
05:34Airbreak the smallest parcel of this vow.
05:38Wow, I didn't think I had that in me.
05:46I didn't think I still remember that.
05:48Wow.
05:49Yeah.
05:50You're probably proud of your mom.
05:52I got third in the country for that.
05:54Wow.
05:56First in New York.
05:57Third in the country.
05:59Congratulations.
06:00Thank you very much.
06:01This is what we're interested in knowing.
06:03How did Lea Salonga as a mother?
06:06Progressive.
06:07Progressive.
06:08What does it mean?
06:09Progressive.
06:10Progressive as in...
06:12Do you know about the story of Spring Awakening?
06:15A bit.
06:17Completely not.
06:1819th century.
06:2019th century.
06:20Right.
06:20And the show opens with Vendla's mom not telling her how babies are made.
06:28My mom, I think, is the complete opposite of Vendla.
06:34A Vendla's mom, I mean.
06:35Like, I think she's open.
06:39She's loving.
06:40She's kind.
06:42She's one of the most understanding people I've ever known.
06:46And, you know, I really don't think I could have asked for a better mother.
06:51And I think that if I was with anybody else, that I wouldn't be where I am today.
06:58And I wouldn't, you know, I wouldn't be able to sing her praises and everything.
07:04Is she very protective?
07:06Um, yes.
07:09But she also knows that I can take care of myself.
07:12Right.
07:12You're so scared.
07:15One.
07:16Once.
07:16One day?
07:17At two years old, I threw a shoe on the table.
07:19And then she pulled me and...
07:20And then that's it.
07:22Never again.
07:24I'm afraid.
07:26So, um, afterwards, nah, she didn't have to.
07:32All she had to do was look at me like, mmm.
07:35And then I was like, sorry.
07:38I love that.
07:39I love that impression.
07:40Can you mimic your mom?
07:42Yeah.
07:42So, her face is like this.
07:43How does she get out of it?
07:44I love that.
07:49When she likes what you do, what is that face like?
07:58She sees, you know, she's just an old friend that she hasn't seen in a long, long time.
08:04No, but like when she's happy, she's beaming.
08:06She's beaming when she's happy, you know?
08:08Yeah, I can imagine.
08:10I can almost remember a lot of times.
08:11And when she's very emotional or proud, ganito, magbuka.
08:20Okay.
08:24Sorry, mama.
08:25I'm sorry.
08:27Nick, palagay mo, anong naman mo?
08:29What did you get from mom?
08:32People tell me that I talk like my mom.
08:34Can you tell me?
08:35Yes, a bit.
08:35Yes.
08:36People tell me that I talk like my mom.
08:38People tell me that I move like her.
08:40I don't really see it.
08:41People tell me, funnily enough, after she started taking testosterone, people say,
08:48my mom, I agree, I started looking more like my mom.
08:51As a kid, I looked like my dad.
08:53But my mom believes, like, it's following the saying,
08:56boys look like their moms and girls look like their dads.
08:58Okay.
08:59So when I was a girl, I looked like my dad.
09:01And now, lalaki ako, I look like her.
09:03So, there's that.
09:05Okay.
09:05Do you know mom about love and love?
09:11What?
09:11Sorry?
09:12Have you had a girlfriend?
09:13I'm sorry.
09:13Oh, yes.
09:15Yes.
09:16Is your mom the type who asks a lot of questions?
09:20Is your mom the type who says, Nick, I want to meet her?
09:25No.
09:25No?
09:25I'm the one who says, I want you to meet her.
09:28Oh.
09:28I've had boyfriends and whatever, and girlfriends, both, bisexual.
09:33Oh, okay.
09:33All right.
09:34And, like, you know, I'm non-binary, not-binary, you know, whatever.
09:38Is that how you identify yourself?
09:39Yeah.
09:40I identify as bisexual.
09:42Okay.
09:42Yeah.
09:42Up to this very moment.
09:44Yeah.
09:44I mean, I might change, I don't know.
09:46No, that's okay.
09:47You're non-binary.
09:48But you say you're a trans man.
09:50I am a trans, I'm not non-binary.
09:52I'm not non-binary.
09:53Okay.
09:53I am a trans man, but I like boys and girls.
09:58Okay.
09:58I understand that.
09:59And, you know, whatever.
10:02It depends, talaga, on my relationship with people.
10:04Okay.
10:06Wait, that's pansexual.
10:07Crap.
10:08You know what?
10:08It doesn't matter.
10:09No, but that's pansexual.
10:10But that's not the first time.
10:12Let's try.
10:13You understand this.
10:14But I, because I'm familiar with, you're right, it's not non-binary, but, yes, you're a trans man,
10:22and you are, because you can be trans man and pan.
10:26Yes.
10:27You can.
10:27Sexuality and gender have nothing to do with each other.
10:30A man can like women, and another man of the same gender can like men.
10:35Okay.
10:35It doesn't make him less of a man.
10:36And while we're talking about this, when you identified yourself very clearly to your mom,
10:43how did it happen?
10:44You were telling mom?
10:45Yes.
10:45Or how was that?
10:47I was telling my mom.
10:48Take me to that moment when you told mom.
10:51The morning of 20, maybe, what was this, 2021 or so, it was a pandemic.
11:02Yes, but she was on a tour in the States.
11:06The night before, I had realized that I was trans, and I had told, I went up to her in
11:12the morning,
11:12like, mama, I think I'm transgender, I'm a trans, and then she was like, okay, let's take a step back.
11:20Like, you know, we don't, you're very young, let's not, you know, put any immediate labels right now.
11:28Okay.
11:29Because you never know, right?
11:32You could be non-binary, you could be whatever.
11:34And I was like, okay, yeah, whatever.
11:36Okay.
11:37And I ended up going on this journey from non-binary, gender fluid, so, you know, and then to gender
11:45fluid,
11:45but I prefer a woman to just a woman.
11:49To just a woman.
11:50So, it really, like, full circle talaga.
11:52Like, I think, no matter how much you try to deny who you are, you're gonna have to come back
11:57to it.
11:57Kung tamang pagka-intindi ko, if you identify yourself as a trans man, and then you're pan-romantic,
12:02ito po yung mga taong hindi sila pumapasok sa isang relasyon na walang romance, na walang emosyon.
12:09Okay, but that's for another interview that you should do with Tito Boy.
12:13Wait, wait a minute.
12:13English, what did you say?
12:17Sabi, this is a conversation that you and Tito Boy should be doing because we would need more time to
12:23actually talk about it.
12:23Oh, yeah.
12:24So, I'm so sorry for derailing.
12:26Yes, that's okay.
12:29It was just interesting to find out how you and mom actually talked about it.
12:36And now it's clear, you know.
12:38Take it easy.
12:40Take it slow.
12:41Take a few steps backward.
12:43And let's see what happens.
12:45But I remember, I think she was a little bit, like, there was a little bit of a resistance, I
12:50think.
12:50Because, of course, as a parent, you don't want your child to go through hardship, right?
12:56And I think she knew that if I went down this road, there was a lot of hardship.
13:01Oh.
13:03But there was a night when, and we were already discussing about taking testosterone, but we agreed afterwards, because she
13:10didn't want my voice to change too much when I was singing.
13:12Um, and I had a breakdown.
13:15And I was so, I don't want to say, I'm trying to word this in the best way that I
13:20can, because it wasn't the kind of thing where, like, magtatantrum.
13:24Parang, it was like, I've, um, I've seen the kind of conversations that you have on this show.
13:31So forgive me if I get pretty deep here.
13:33Go ahead.
13:34Like, I wanted to die.
13:37I wanted to die.
13:38Because I was, when you look in the mirror and you see yourself and you're like, I can't just take
13:44these boobs off.
13:46I can't, I have to go through all this stuff and it's not anywhere close to now.
13:49I don't, and, or, like, my voice doesn't, like, no matter what I'll do, I won't be able to have,
13:59to be seen the way that, for who I really am.
14:04And, you know, and, or, I won't be able to, um, be with certain people because they won't be attracted
14:13to the outside when, in fact, the inside is, you know.
14:16What matters.
14:16What matters, and the inside is, you can't come out because of all this semantics of surgery and all these
14:21hormones and whatever, which I'm very grateful for now.
14:24But I remember, I just remember, like, I was like, Mama, I can't do this anymore.
14:28Like, I can't, like, I can't, I can't wait anymore.
14:32What did she say?
14:33She held me and she was like, okay, then we'll do it, you know, when, when you want to do
14:38it.
14:38We'll do it before woods.
14:39And I think that was the best reaction that she could have had.
14:43Like, talaga, just like, like, you know, okay.
14:46But the top surgery, you have to wait because of your recovery and school.
14:50And I was like, okay.
14:51But hormones, okay.
14:53We'll do that because if you can't wait, it's fine.
14:55So the top surgery finally happened when?
14:59September 2nd.
15:00Of?
15:01Of last year.
15:02Last year.
15:03And then you were ready.
15:05Mom was right.
15:06Just wait.
15:06Yeah, but I remember she was like, like, you sure?
15:11She really made, and I was like, yes, I'm sure.
15:13And I remember even, like, for a while before taking testosterone, I had talked to other trans guys.
15:22I talked to, uh, Kuya, Jake.
15:26Yes, Kuya Jake Zyrus.
15:28And I talked to him about, like, hey, did you know right away?
15:31And I forgot exactly what he said.
15:34But I remember that his advice were very sweet.
15:37He told me to take certain vitamins.
15:39So you did speak to?
15:40I did.
15:41And I was like, how, how did you know?
15:43Talaga, gusto mo to.
15:45Like, did you ever change your mind?
15:46You know, because what if I change my mind?
15:47I'm like, what am I going to do?
15:49Pero, um, I didn't.
15:53And neither did they.
15:55And, you know, them talking, talking to me.
16:00Yeah, that was a concern.
16:01Yeah.
16:01The changing of the mind.
16:03Yeah.
16:03Because, like, I'm so, I was young.
16:05I'm young.
16:05Right.
16:05And, you know, my mind is still developing.
16:08I don't know.
16:10But, honestly, I think that I have no regrets in taking testosterone.
16:16No regrets at all.
16:17And, you know, and I'm so grateful that my mom is so supportive in letting me do it.
16:22And, you know, that she just, all she really wants is for me to be happy.
16:27And so does my dad.
16:29I know in your heart that, aside from mom, dad, we will support you.
16:35Yeah.
16:36Because there's so much outside of genders and sexual orientations, you know.
16:42We're talking about humanity here.
16:44Yeah.
16:48Wonderful story.
16:49Wonderful story of, you know, a young son and a mother.
16:53It's right, it's the spring awakening.
16:55It's so great.
16:56It's so great.
16:57It's so great.
16:58It's like, you know, why I'm saying it's right, it's right.
17:03Because that spring awakening is basically, if I remember it correctly, it's all about this.
17:08It's very much so about teaching the adults in young people's lives not telling them the truth about sexual health
17:19or how, what is sex.
17:21Because, you know, because that's so important when you're young.
17:24Because what, crazy things can happen if you don't know what you're doing.
17:28You know.
17:28We've recognized, I'm sorry to cut you there.
17:30We've recognized that sex is not talking about.
17:32It's supposed to be taboo.
17:34Yes.
17:34It's supposed to be.
17:35Yes.
17:37But it shouldn't be.
17:38It shouldn't be.
17:39And there's a way to talk about it with your children.
17:40With respect and love.
17:42With respect and love.
17:43And in an appropriate way.
17:46Right.
17:47You're not, you're not going to pull up porn and like, here, look.
17:51Jesus.
17:52You got to explain things to your kids so that they don't make mistakes.
17:56Respectful.
17:57But I want to go back to our original discussion.
18:00Yes.
18:00So you've already been a girlfriend, boyfriend.
18:02But right now, are you single?
18:03Are you taken?
18:03I'm single at the moment.
18:04You are single.
18:05People have been asking.
18:06You know, I wanted to ask.
18:08Do you chase?
18:09Do you wait?
18:12I do both.
18:13Do both?
18:14I do both.
18:14It depends on how I'm feeling.
18:15I love that.
18:16Why not?
18:17Yeah.
18:18I mean, it depends on where I am in life.
18:21You know?
18:21Yeah.
18:22For a while, I chased a lot.
18:24And now I'm waiting.
18:26Okay.
18:26And now I'm like, you know what?
18:28Sige universe, I'll just wait.
18:30Okay.
18:32You know, just this year.
18:35Kung tama ang aking pagkaalala.
18:37January this year.
18:38There was a press conference, Mama did.
18:41And then we got to know, nalaman namin lahat, that she had separated from your dad.
18:47We didn't know that, you know.
18:49And knowing your mother, who has been very, very private, in spite of her being very public,
18:57were you surprised that she spoke about it openly?
19:01A little.
19:02A little.
19:03But at the same time, not.
19:07Because it had been a long time coming, and I think it was honestly about time that she talk about
19:12it.
19:13And I'm really glad that she did.
19:15Must have been liberating.
19:16I'm sure.
19:17How old were you when they...
19:19I found out a terrible way.
19:21So, I...
19:22As of when I was 14, I had my own Instagram, whatever.
19:24I posted, like, my art there, whatever.
19:28And some terrible fan had...
19:32Some lovely person went in the comments and was, like, in all cap, in all cap...
19:36Okay.
19:38Nicole, I'm so sorry that your parents are divorced.
19:41God bless your mom.
19:42I'm so sorry.
19:43What the hell?
19:45And I had no idea.
19:47I had no idea that they were split.
19:49And I don't know where they heard this from.
19:50And I was, like, bawling my eyes at my boyfriend at the time.
19:54And one of my best friends were, like, what's wrong with you?
19:56What's wrong with you?
19:57Why are you doing this?
19:57Yeah.
19:58I was basically a child.
20:00And the next day, my dad...
20:02I talked to my dad about this.
20:04And I text my dad.
20:05And I'm, like, what's going on?
20:07You know?
20:08And he's, like, I'm very sorry that you had to find out like that.
20:12But, yeah, me and your mom are separated.
20:15But, and we want you to know that it was very hard.
20:20But that the conversation was long and very difficult for the both of us.
20:25And it's not your fault.
20:27You know?
20:28And it was, it was, it was a long time coming.
20:34How is your relationship with dad?
20:36Great.
20:37How is mom and dad's relationship?
20:41Great.
20:41It's fine.
20:42Fine?
20:43Yeah.
20:43Okay.
20:44So, no problem.
20:46Yeah.
20:47Basically, no problem.
20:48But, like, my, my, even as a kid, I kind of had a feeling, like, I don't, my parents were
20:56not as affectionate towards each other.
20:59You noticed that?
21:00I noticed that.
21:01Okay.
21:01I thought it was normal, because that's all I knew.
21:03But when you see your friend's parents, like, you know, kiss each other and, like, hold each
21:07other and stuff in certain ways and whatever, and you see your parents not really do that
21:12so much, you know.
21:14Your dad, you mentioned in an interview, is in another relationship.
21:19Yes.
21:20Do you talk to your mom and you say, when are you going to have a boyfriend, mom?
21:24I did.
21:25I did, but then I think she doesn't want one.
21:28She doesn't like.
21:29I think she's very content with how she is right now.
21:33And who am I to tell her to find a man?
21:37You know?
21:37Right.
21:37Like, she's, she's, she doesn't, she doesn't need one.
21:41And she's perfectly independent and whole on her own.
21:47She tells me, like, like, that apparently I'm the only man that she needs in her life.
21:51Yeah.
21:51They just, just, this her son.
21:53That's it.
21:54And you know what?
21:55Okay.
21:56I'm crying here.
21:58You, not me.
22:00Not me.
22:00But, um, yeah, and my dad and my, my, my stepmom is, is a wonderful lady.
22:07Yeah.
22:08And I am so glad that this is on TV.
22:10I want to say this for the record.
22:12She's a wonderful lady and I, and I care about her and I love her.
22:17And, you know, my, my dad and her make a lovely couple and I'm, I just want my dad to
22:22be happy.
22:23And I just want my mom to be happy.
22:24Yeah.
22:25And they're very happy separated.
22:26Okay.
22:27Um, Spring Awakening, a musical.
22:30Yes.
22:30Uh, is currently running and would you like to invite everybody to be part to, to watch?

22:48But please come watch Spring Awakening.

23:04I do this in my interviews.

25:54That's for another interview.
25:55That's for another interview,
