00:00This is where we want to put the house.
00:01We're here.
00:02This is it.
00:03Natalie and Parker want to build on her childhood property.
00:06I think we're going to do, possibly,
00:08a shipping container house.
00:09We knew it was going to be a challenge.
00:12Let's do it!
00:12This is going to be our first shipping container build.
00:15I know this is small.
00:17Definitely a confined space.
00:19I would really like a wine room.
00:21A wine room?
00:22They have yet to scale back on anything.
00:25We are both well outside of our comfort zone.
00:27These shipping containers weigh a ton.
00:30Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
00:31You're going to hit a pipe.
00:32The windows are not going to fit.
00:34Are you kidding me?
00:36Oh, no.
00:37We'll need nerves of steel in order to get this done
00:39before move-in day.
00:41Wow.
00:44Wow.
00:44This is beautiful.
00:46Oh, man, Brian, this is looking good so far.
00:49Yeah!
00:50Mika and I build custom homes on fast timelines.
00:53We don't want to carry two mortgages for too long.
00:56Time is money.
00:57We're proof that construction and marriage can mix.
01:01Give me a sweaty hug.
01:02We're still doing new construction.
01:04You ready to break some ground?
01:05But now we're taking bigger risks.
01:09Look at all that black mold behind that wall.
01:11I think we're going to do a shipping container house.
01:13Let's go!
01:15Making bolder decisions.
01:16Put your arm up here.
01:19We've never put it in any other house.
01:21And always racing the clock.
01:23I can't believe they're going to be living inside of this in less than 100 days.
01:27This is amazing.
01:33Whoa!
01:34Oh, my gosh.
01:35Look at that view.
01:36This is beautiful.
01:38Gosh, it feels like you're in a different state.
01:39All the tree lines.
01:41A state of relaxation.
01:42We're back in river view.
01:43This property is amazing.
01:45And it's tucked away from all the noise.
01:48Right on the Alify River.
01:49Fun fact.
01:50Native Americans call it Alify, meaning river of fire.
01:54Because of all the phosphate in the river, it actually glows at night.
01:58Okay, that's kind of cool.
02:00And, uh, I did not know that.
02:02Okay, I'm excited to be here.
02:04Oh, my God.
02:05Holy smokes.
02:06Nice to meet you all too, but also, we just want to play with the dogs.
02:09Of course.
02:10You can.
02:10Are these your dogs, or?
02:11So, we're split.
02:12Two are mine and hers, and then two are my mother-in-law's.
02:15Okay.
02:16Hi, mother-in-law.
02:17How you doing?
02:18Hey.
02:21My name is Natalie.
02:22I'm Parker.
02:23I am originally from Tampa, Florida.
02:25I'm originally from Atlanta, Georgia.
02:27Came down here in 2009 for college.
02:30Met her my senior year.
02:31We've now been married for six years.
02:34We were living in Atlanta for six years, and after my dad had passed,
02:37we moved back to Tampa to live with my mom.
02:40You know, spending more time with her.
02:42We absolutely love it.
02:43I had an incredible relationship with my dad.
02:46We're really, really close.
02:47Just living here again on this beautiful property,
02:49it makes me feel closer to him.
02:50This property is gorgeous.
02:52It's gorgeous.
02:54And big.
02:54How many acres is this?
02:55Three acres.
02:56How long have you had this property?
02:5832 years.
02:59I was pregnant with Natalie.
03:00So you guys want to move, but you don't want to move very far.
03:03Not far at all.
03:04My mom was very generous, and she offered to let us build on this property.
03:08I want to explore and then figure out where we're going to situate you guys.
03:13Let's do it.
03:19This is where we want to put the house.
03:20We're here?
03:20This is it.
03:21This is it.
03:21Okay.
03:22Right here.
03:22I love all the mature oak trees.
03:24Yeah, it's like a little canopy.
03:26You hear that bamboo?
03:27And my dad planted it.
03:29So this does look pretty much flat.
03:31Mm-hmm.
03:31Yep.
03:31It's cleared out?
03:32Yep.
03:32How big are you guys thinking?
03:34We're thinking basically a tiny home.
03:36We had a huge house in Atlanta, and we just didn't want that much upkeep anymore.
03:41Smart.
03:41Yeah.
03:42And less is more.
03:42Less is more nowadays, and we love to travel.
03:45So given this, this is an opportunity for us to travel.
03:48So that's what we're looking forward to.
03:50We want to keep it sustainable, and also we want to have a better impact for the environment.
03:55I think we're going to do possibly a shipping container house.
04:01I noticed all the shipping containers over the property.
04:03Yes, there's quite a few on the property.
04:05Her father has a lot of history with shipping containers in the city of Tampa.
04:09Yeah.
04:09My dad had a shipping container rental business, and his was one of the first ones that started
04:13here in Tampa in the 1970s.
04:16Oh, I think this would be an awesome thing to include him.
04:20Are we using one of those shipping containers?
04:22Unfortunately, no.
04:23Okay.
04:23We need them to be hurricane-proof.
04:25Yeah, we need them to be hurricane-proof, and those have been around the block.
04:28Some of the variables we're going to have to get familiar with.
04:30So there's going to be some research.
04:31This is kind of like a challenge, and we definitely need all the help we can get.
04:35What are some of the non-negotiable items that you have to have in this house?
04:39One bedroom, one bath, and living room, kitchen, kind of open area, possibly.
04:45We definitely want the indoor-outdoor feel.
04:47We need to figure out what kind of style you like.
04:49So he likes a little bit more modern, so mine was a little more transitional,
04:55but now we've settled on modern organic.
04:57Oh!
04:58Yeah, so it's like modern, but still cozy.
05:01I think that's amazing, and having some of those organic materials in the house
05:04is going to help bring that outside in.
05:07That's the goal.
05:07We would love that, yeah.
05:08I would still like a big closet.
05:10We could also use it for storage.
05:11It's just going to basically force us to make sure we make every single inch of this place count.
05:17And speaking of that, we also need to figure out how many dollars we're going to count.
05:21So we're thinking about trying to keep it around $200,000.
05:26Looking forward to it.
05:27This is definitely going to be a unique build and a challenge, but one that we're up for.
05:31Oh, yeah.
05:31You excited?
05:32She's so excited.
05:33Oh, she's extremely excited.
05:35She's happy.
05:42Okay.
05:43Oh.
05:44This is beautiful.
05:45So anytime I'm doing inspiration tours with clients,
05:47I like to find houses that match some of the adjectives that they tell me from our first meeting.
05:52And it was a little difficult finding a shipping container that isn't a residential zone.
05:57I mean, we have plenty of businesses in Tampa that are made from shipping containers,
06:01not so many houses.
06:02So this is more set up as like a guest house.
06:04It's a smaller footprint.
06:06I know you guys are going to do something a little bigger,
06:07but at least we can get an example of like the facade.
06:10They just painted the metal and kept it a little bit more industrial.
06:13We love the idea of a shipping container, but we definitely don't want it to look like one.
06:19Okay.
06:20I think we want to go a little more stucco, wood.
06:23Organic.
06:24Yeah.
06:24I love the organic.
06:25So we'll cover it up.
06:26We know we're going to use something to dress up the outside.
06:29I really want you guys to see inside,
06:30because that's the unique part about this kind of build.
06:33So let's go check it out.
06:34Perfect.
06:35Natalie and Parker are hoping to use only two to three standard shipping containers,
06:39which is around 900 square feet.
06:41So my goal today is to identify which areas we can sacrifice or make multifunctional,
06:45and which we can't.
06:47Okay, this is way smaller than what you're looking for.
06:50But what we can learn from this is how to maximize what you're working with.
06:53They put a lot in here, I see.
06:55Yeah, I mean, living room, bedroom, kitchen, storage, and bathroom.
07:00So it's got a lot of flexibility, right?
07:03So we've got the pullout bed.
07:04I don't have to save on space.
07:06Yeah.
07:07I don't, I would love to have a traditional bed.
07:09I'm a tall guy.
07:10I want that bed to be able to lay out.
07:11I don't have to wrestle with cabinetry to pull down a bed to lay down.
07:15So, um...
07:16You're also getting a little old, so...
07:18She likes to throw it out there too.
07:20I'm getting a little old and my back hurts all the time.
07:22My back hurts all the time.
07:23It is small.
07:24Definitely.
07:25I think we are going to save space in like a few other areas.
07:28Okay, let's look and see if we can scale back in the bathroom.
07:31So this bathroom, I know this is small.
07:34Yes.
07:34For what they had to work with, you do have all the necessities.
07:38Sure.
07:38Uh, we definitely want more of like an oasis, not a confined space.
07:43What are you envisioning?
07:44Like a standalone tub, if we can fit that in there.
07:48A separate shower, for sure a water closet.
07:51And I would like preferably like a double vanity.
07:55I feel like that's going to be a standard size, you know...
07:59Bathroom.
07:59Yeah.
08:00They want a lot of spa-like features and that's going to take a pretty significant footprint.
08:06We're just going to have to be really, really great with our space planning to not waste
08:10any livable square footage.
08:13I'm going to take them to a full-size home next, which may seem counterintuitive while we need to
08:18downsize, but we do still need to talk style.
08:21This home has a modern aesthetic I think will speak to them.
08:25Okay, so kitchens are very important.
08:28There's a lot of design decisions that happen in the kitchen.
08:31I love this.
08:33Simplicity of it, the modernness.
08:34It's got like the light and dark contrast.
08:37It's maybe a little too contrasty.
08:39I absolutely love wood cabinets.
08:41Like I love that it brings warmth into the kitchen.
08:44That's where we'll have to figure out the compromise.
08:46Maybe we can kind of make a hybrid of both styles that you love.
08:50Let's just talk about functionality-wise.
08:52Like what are some must-haves in this kitchen that you need?
08:54I do think like the kitchen appliances I have would be really good.
08:57So we want full-size appliances?
08:59Yeah.
08:59Definitely.
09:00Okay.
09:01For me personally, I would love an island.
09:04I like to turn around and work both sides of the kitchen when cooking.
09:08Okay.
09:09I want you to check out this area over here.
09:10This is a really big dining room.
09:12I don't think we're going to be able to do something like this.
09:14Okay.
09:15Would you be open to, if we have an island, make it functional, but also it could second as your
09:20dining table?
09:24Yeah.
09:24I'd be going to have to sacrifice having a dining space.
09:27No formal dining.
09:28Yep.
09:28All right.
09:29I would really like a wine room.
09:32A wine room?
09:33Yes.
09:35Natalie and Parker have yet to scale back on anything.
09:39I'm running out of rooms and ideas.
09:41So you really want a wine room?
09:43Yes.
09:47I would really like a wine room.
09:50A wine room?
09:53Yes.
09:53It doesn't have to be a big room.
09:55Okay.
09:56I give up our closet for a wine room.
09:58And I'm not sacrificing my closet space, so.
10:01Would you be open to this feature wall we have here?
10:05It's kind of like functional because you can get your bottle of wine for dinner.
10:08It also adds to the design aesthetic.
10:13Yes.
10:14I would love something like this.
10:15Wine wall all day.
10:17Wine wall all day.
10:18Yep.
10:19We'll figure out the wine storage and we'll also need a bedroom.
10:23Y'all are going to put me to the test on space planning 101.
10:27Ryan and I have our work cut out.
10:29Potentially, I would want the bedroom to be a little bigger.
10:33Bigger than this room?
10:34Yes.
10:34Oh, I am not going to lie.
10:36I'm not 100% confident we can do this yet.
10:43I love your mom's property.
10:45It's so peaceful.
10:46Yeah, I feel like out here you just can enjoy nature 360, right?
10:50Oh, yeah.
10:51So we got to do the inspiration tours to get kind of a feel of like,
10:54how are we going to make the most out of this thousand square feet?
10:57I feel pretty confident.
10:58The rendering that we're going to show you today is going to have
11:00all of those items on your wish list.
11:04So it's going to be three containers total, nine and a half feet tall, 40 feet long.
11:08Okay.
11:08But we configured it as almost like an L shape.
11:11So you can kind of take advantage with two of those side by side.
11:13So it's pretty spacious.
11:15It's not going to make it feel so tight in there.
11:17I'm very excited.
11:18That's impressive.
11:19Very cool.
11:20The aesthetic is going to be modern organic.
11:22We're going to cover the traditional corrugated metal with smooth stucco and raw wood finishes
11:27to really give you that modern and organic vibe.
11:29I think it looks great.
11:31Stepping inside, this is where we have to be really smart about the layout, right?
11:36You're going to step right into the heart of the home.
11:38So you've got your living, kitchen.
11:40It's going to be one big space.
11:41The kitchen is complete with full size appliances.
11:44Amazing.
11:45Amazing.
11:46Yes.
11:46We didn't forget about your wine wall.
11:47Okay.
11:48This corner of the kitchen is going to be your little corner there.
11:51The best corner of the house.
11:52It's the best corner of the house.
11:53The best corner of the house.
11:54The best corner of the house.
11:55The way the shipping containers are situated, it creates a natural courtyard.
11:59You're going to have massive double doors that are going to open up to your kitchen
12:02and living room.
12:03I love that.
12:03It's amazing.
12:04Yeah.
12:04And it gives it a very like indoor outdoor feel.
12:06Yeah.
12:07And your main suite is going to be tucked in the shipping container towards the back of the house.
12:10Notice you have a huge walk-in closet right off the bedroom.
12:14It's the width of two shipping containers.
12:16It is.
12:16Don't worry, babe.
12:17Your clothes will fit too.
12:18That's a lot.
12:19And then with the bathroom, you do have a tub and you do have a shower.
12:24Is there any way we could maybe have more storage cabinets with the vanity?
12:29Just so we have places to put towels.
12:31Okay.
12:32Huh.
12:32All right.
12:33We have to move around some puzzle pieces here.
12:34We can do it.
12:35So shower, maybe we bring it down a little bit since we're doing a separate shower and tub.
12:40Yeah.
12:40The tub can maybe go this direction.
12:42Against this wall?
12:42Yeah.
12:43Yeah.
12:43This back wall, I think we can move your vanities here.
12:46It's going to give it more cabinet space.
12:48Yeah.
12:49Okay.
12:49That's an easy modification.
12:51I think that's still going to give you everything you need in that bathroom.
12:54All in all, you have three shipping containers.
12:56You have your 900 square feet and it's pretty spacious.
12:58We kept it within your budget of $200,000.
13:01Amazing.
13:02It looks so good.
13:02Everything in there.
13:03Yeah.
13:03That all of that can, three shipping containers.
13:06Right?
13:06That's impressive.
13:07I just think this is so special.
13:09I keep thinking back to how your dad started in shipping containers.
13:12I'm so excited.
13:13I think this will be great.
13:14And I'm so glad that we can include my dad in this and you guys are a part of it.
13:18And let's not forget that they're going to be living here.
13:21I do want it to be a surprise.
13:22So when you drive to your mom's house, just kind of look the opposite way.
13:25I do want it to be a part of it.
13:34While the lot is getting scraped, we're actually breaking ground somewhere else.
13:40Man, so it is weird to do a groundbreaking offsite.
13:44What's up, Nick?
13:45Okay, we are excited to get this project started.
13:48Nick is the king of shipping containers.
13:50He's been doing this for years and he's going to help us get this project done.
13:52So we'll be starting on container one today, which is on the far side of this building.
13:57And we'll be cutting out the whole side of it.
13:59What we're going to do offsite is going to be the structural outside.
14:03Wow.
14:06This whole wall is going to come out today.
14:09And it's going to connect the two containers together.
14:12Absolutely.
14:12So like on the L shape, we're kind of like on the longer part of the L.
14:15Yes.
14:15The living room, great room area.
14:18Okay.
14:18And then this side is some windows and doors, slider.
14:23And then we're going to start to reinforce this whole thing with steel.
14:26With block construction, if you make a mistake, you can always adjust the blocks.
14:30I feel like with this, there's nothing that we can mess up that I can't fix.
14:35Okay.
14:36Yeah, when you're a welder, you can pretty much put all this stuff back together.
14:38We don't like to do that, but we can.
14:40It is fun to learn different types of construction.
14:42Let's do it.
14:43Oh, boy.
14:53This actually reminds me when I was a little kid.
14:56My brother and I used to get cardboard boxes.
14:57We'd cut the sides out.
14:58We'd connect them.
14:59We'd stack them.
15:00This is quite the process.
15:02Yeah.
15:03So we have like eight hours left of just cutting.
15:06Wow.
15:06And then we got about two more days of grinding all the cuts that we've done.
15:10I can't believe they're going to be living inside of this in less than 100 days.
15:15You know what, though?
15:16Once we get this thing fully done, it'll be better sound insulated and we'll be good to go.
15:20What?
15:21What?
15:21What did she say?
15:22I don't know.
15:22I can't hear anything.
15:32You're good.
15:32Keep cutting it.
15:33Raise your hand if you're ready to pour some concrete.
15:37Me.
15:45So this is a monolithic pour, basically meaning we're pouring the footers and the slab all
15:50at once.
15:51Mono meaning one, lithic meaning stone.
15:54We want to fill all this in.
15:56The only thing is we cannot cover up these anchor points.
15:59We have to keep these open because this is what's going to attach to the shipping containers.
16:05I can't get over the engineering of this foundation.
16:09I mean, you can build a skyscraper on top of this.
16:10You can literally build a skyscraper.
16:12Jeez.
16:13These shipping containers weigh a ton times three.
16:16Plus, there's so much surface area on the sides.
16:19When high winds come, they're almost like sails.
16:21So they basically get welded to these anchor points, which is going to help during hurricane season.
16:35So all the prep work has been done with the containers off-site.
16:39Now it's time to move them on-site.
16:41This is also the final trip for these containers, because they, at one point,
16:45were shipping containers.
16:46Yeah, so it's been around the world.
16:47So this is the final destination.
16:49Each strap holds 11,000 pounds, so we should be good.
16:52We ready for liftoff?
16:54Yeah.
16:54Oh boy.
16:55Yeah, it's time.
16:56Let's do it.
17:00Watch out.
17:03Hey, you get front corner, I'll get back corner.
17:06All right, Mike, swing it over.
17:08Yeah, this way.
17:09There you go.
17:09There we go.
17:10There you go.
17:11All right, we got to try to hit those anchor plates perfectly.
17:14A little more.
17:16My six inches this way.
17:17Down, down, down, down.
17:18Down.
17:20All right.
17:21One down, three to go.
17:22Let's bring it up.
17:24This is the easy part.
17:25Spin it.
17:26This is very accurate.
17:29We're spinning this way?
17:30Yeah.
17:31All right.
17:32This should meet up with the first one perfectly.
17:35Should is the key word.
17:37Bring it right up to it, Mike.
17:38Watch your fingers.
17:39There we go.
17:40Oh.
17:41There we go.
17:42Yep, yep, yep.
17:43All right, straight down from there.
17:44We're good.
17:50Here it is.
17:53In this next one, with all the plumbing,
17:55we got to get through the holes.
17:56Last one.
17:57All right.
17:57Thank God.
18:01I really hope these line up.
18:03Come on.
18:06Mike, a little higher.
18:06You're going to hit a pipe.
18:08Up.
18:09Up.
18:11Hey.
18:11Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
18:12Hey, wait.
18:15Oh, man.
18:15We were so close.
18:17Up.
18:17Up.
18:19Up.
18:20Oh, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
18:22We're going to have to cut these.
18:23OK.
18:26Drain pipe's good, but the water line is not.
18:28Oh, man, we were so close.
18:29Our plumbing is coming out of the slab where it's supposed to,
18:33but the container is also going to land right on top of this.
18:37So it should have been marked better in the plans,
18:39so we could have avoided this, but we can't go backwards now.
18:42What we're going to have to do is cut the plumbing, cap it off,
18:45put the containers on top, cut a big enough hole,
18:48so our plumbers can come back, reroute the plumbing,
18:52and repair all the concrete.
18:55Those are good.
18:55Everything else is good.
18:57All right, so give it a try.
19:00We're clear there, Danny?
19:02All right, a little bit more, a little bit more.
19:05Good.
19:07Whoo.
19:08All right, the containers are set, and I'm spent.
19:20Today's framing day with steel shipping containers, steel studs.
19:24Only makes sense.
19:26You know, this is kind of fun once you get in the groove.
19:31You know what I love about steel frame studs?
19:33All the holes line up for your electrical, so you save that much time.
19:37By the end of today, all these spaces are going to be defined.
19:50Hold on a second.
19:52I can't, that can't be right.
19:54Ooh, what's up, Brian?
19:57Uh.
19:58Windows are here?
20:00They're here.
20:02But they're not going in.
20:04What do you mean?
20:05The windows are 30 inches by 48 inches.
20:08Okay.
20:10The rough opening is smaller than that.
20:12Are you kidding me?
20:14The sliders, these windows in the bedroom, none of them are going to fit.
20:17This little half inch is major.
20:20How can that be?
20:21Somewhere in the process, these got off.
20:25Not by a lot, but enough.
20:28Well, that's going to hold up the project,
20:31getting somebody out here to recut these inserts.
20:34So let's just say there's a lot more framers than welders around.
20:38It's a specific trade.
20:39We haven't done a ton of these projects.
20:41And yeah, so I mean, part of the problem is finding the laborers to come out here and fix it.
20:46I'm trying to figure out if it's going to be cheaper and faster to just order new windows.
20:51I cannot imagine.
20:52You got to think about it though.
20:53This has to be cut out.
20:55Then we have to cut into the container, drop all this back down, re-weld everything so it's
21:00structurally sound, and we have to do it for every single rough opening.
21:04I don't know what that would cost, but it cannot be more expensive than reordering every single
21:09window and slider I'm seeing here and not to mention the timeline to get new windows.
21:13And here's another thing you got to think about.
21:15We really can't start drywalling or anything until this is dried in.
21:20At this point, I want to start seeing the finishes coming in, talking about design,
21:25what we want to do for their special project.
21:27Like, we're so far from that.
21:28I can't even think about special projects right now.
21:31Well, I do have some ideas, but I don't even know if we should bring them up until we can
21:36fix it.
21:36Is your idea making the rough openings larger for your special projects?
21:40Actually, no, it wasn't.
21:41900 square feet in 100 days should be simple.
21:44First thing we need to figure out is what the cost is going to be to actually weld these and
21:48correct them. I'm meeting with Natalie and Parker tomorrow, and my hope is that we can
21:52solve these problems without having to stress out our homeowners. I always want to step outside the
21:56box, no pun intended, but I also feel like I don't know if this is a quicker method of construction.
22:03I'm not sold on it yet. We've had a lot of hiccups.
22:05I think it's safe to say we are both well outside of our comfort zone.
22:10All right, I got to call some welders.
22:18Hi. Hello, hello. Welcome to your Waterside Design Studio.
22:24I love that. Look at this.
22:25We're going to have some fun today. Even though we hit a snag with the windows,
22:28we can still order other materials. Picking some of the pretty stuff on the inside,
22:32that's the fun part. Maybe we start with just picking out,
22:35like the flooring. That's kind of a big decision. I think I like more of this color.
22:40I actually like this one out of the three. Yeah.
22:42Y'all agree on the floor? I think we agree on the floor.
22:44Oh, okay. So we got a starting point.
22:47Let's talk about kitchen cabinetry. I do know, Parker, you did love that kitchen that had the black
22:52cabinets, so I did bring that. Or you can do something like this, which is a little bit more
22:57of like a stained oak. It's just such a small space, so I really think we need to keep it
23:02light and bright and make it look bigger. I think I'm going to stick with like the organic wood.
23:07I promise, Harvey. All right, well, that means, so if we look at these two side by side.
23:12Yeah, definitely the lighter tone. I personally would like to see more,
23:17more modern. So if we have the neutral on our floors and our cabinets, it does give us a lot
23:22of
23:22flexibility on hardware. It's small, but it can be impactful as far as design. I really do like
23:28this one. It's different. I like it a lot. Yeah. This is a little bit more of the modern.
23:33Modern. I love that handle. Modern. Hey, hey, hey. So initially, I think that Parker thought that
23:39modern meant going with dark finishes. There's more than one way to accomplish that, and sometimes it
23:44could be the shapes, the patterns. High five. All right. High five. Good work. Good work. I'm loving that.
23:50Before you know it, you are going to be coming home. So I'm super excited for both of you. Looking
23:54forward to it.
24:00This should be, uh, yeah, it should be good. That's good. Should be clear. Yeah.
24:04Here we go. Yeah. Good job, man. Today, we're unfortunately pulling out all of the window framing
24:10beams to resize them down. But the cost is actually less than what Mika and I were afraid it would
24:16be.
24:17Yeah, good, man. All right. Yeah, good. Yeah, we got it. All right. So that's the inch we don't need.
24:26Yeah. So now we have to re-weld this in place. It should be the right size now. Yeah, this.
24:30Should be. Yeah. I measure twice. Cut one. Yeah. No, cuss once.
24:35Cut once. Measure twice, cuss once. Yeah. We're looking at about $7,000, which is way less than all brand
24:42new windows.
24:43Much better. Yeah. It's going to come out of the contingency,
24:46but best of all, it's going to get done today to get us back on track. All right. The new
24:50header's going in.
24:53Are you flush over there? Yeah, I'm flush. Are you ready to, uh, make some sparks fly? Yeah.
25:00Oh, no. Wow. Your core broke. Yeah. Hang on. Oh, shoot. All right. So now we have a new problem.
25:11Apparently, I'm too strong for the cord. And now we have afraid not. Yeah. I'm afraid not. Yeah.
25:19We're going to get it. You're going to fish it through? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, I'm going to get it.
25:25There you go. Come on. Pull through. Yeah. Yes. Now the sparks can fly. Yeah.
25:36All right. So the new and improved rough openings seem to be correct, but we've been here before,
25:43haven't we? I just got to get these windows in. It's amazing how many delays we've had on a 900
25:50square foot house. No more cutting into these containers because it's cutting into our timeline.
25:57Once we get all the windows and doors in, we will officially be dried in,
26:02meaning we can get our trades in and we're one step closer to getting Natalie and Parker in.
26:09God, these things are heavy. I am so stressed. These windows have to fit.
26:13My top corner is in. How are you looking? Perfect fit.
26:21So all the windows and doors are installed with a perfect fit, just like we planned.
26:28I can't even say that with a straight face.
26:35Oh, man. Okay. Now. I feel so relieved that all the windows, all the doors are in.
26:41Yes. Everything fits. Yeah. That was a little bit scary. Ooh, Brian, look at this. Hey, don't pick
26:47mom's fruit. You're going to get in big trouble. She probably knows how many fruits are on each of
26:51these trees. I've been so tempted to pick every time I'm over here, but I have refrained. Speaking
26:56of picking, what we need to pick is what we're going to do for a special project. I'm in a
27:00better
27:00head space to make that decision today. The inside floor plan, it's 900 square feet. I don't think we
27:05can squeeze in anything else in there without it making it feel cluttered. I agree. But we do have a
27:09lot
27:10space out here. Like an outdoor lounge or something. You know what? I was just thinking. What? It's
27:16going to involve another shipping container. Oh, boy. Have you ever seen those shipping container
27:20pools? You basically dig a hole and put the container right in the ground, line it, and that
27:26is your pool. Here's the problem. Doesn't that require a permit? Yeah. I do like the idea of something
27:32with the water element because when it's hot out here and they're out here with the dogs and they're
27:36hanging out. You know what we could do? Those galvanized stock tank pools.
27:43Doesn't take up a ton of space. It's, you know, above ground. Doesn't need a permit.
27:47I kind of think the aesthetic of it looking like metal will go really well with the fact
27:51that we're building a house out of shipping container. Okay. We'll build up around it,
27:54landscape around it. I almost think kind of right in this little bit. Uh-oh!
27:57Oh, he's coming over! Hey, if you're missing any avocados. Hey!
28:03Uh-oh. I was tempted. You guys are stealing my avocados? No way.
28:07Every time I come over here, I'm like, ooh, papaya, avocado. Here's the good news.
28:11Because we've had some delays here, Natalie and Parker can stay with you longer.
28:16Okay, it's been three years already. How much longer?
28:19So we're at the point where we're trying to figure out a special project.
28:22Okay. Yeah.
28:23So we're thinking of like a stock tank pool, which is like a circle galvanized tub.
28:27That would be nice, right? Yeah, it would be nice.
28:30Okay, mama, we need one more favor. I mean, obviously, they're going to see the outside.
28:34But can you help us make sure that they don't peek inside the boxes?
28:37I can help that. Yes!
28:39Deal, mama's keeping an eye on it. All right.
28:41Well, we'll be seeing you soon. I'm just going to do a little grocery shopping.
28:43Yeah, we're going to get produce for the week.
28:45Time for some guacamole.
28:47Good seeing you. Bye.
28:48Bye. Thanks, mama.
28:51You're welcome. Bye-bye.
29:02We have a packed house at Natalie and Parker's.
29:04There's stucco finishing on the outside. Light fixtures are getting installed.
29:09The boys are working on a special project.
29:12The cabinets are getting built and assembled.
29:16We've got tile going in the bathroom.
29:19And a really cool lime wash going throughout the house.
29:22Excuse me.
29:23So we lost so much time in the beginning part of this build that we have been trying to make
29:29up those days.
29:30Typically, we stack all the trades, but in a 900-square-foot house, it's tight.
29:36Oh, this looks so good.
29:38The reason why I love this lime wash is it almost looks like a wallpaper, and it's like perfectly imperfect.
29:46I'm absolutely thrilled that we're finally putting the finishing touches on this build.
29:51I've got to be honest.
29:52At a certain point, I didn't think we would ever get here, but thank goodness we are.
29:57All right, I feel like everything is contained within the containers.
30:01So I'm going to go help the boys finish up the special project.
30:07I love the way the special project is coming together, but it's been quite the process.
30:12First, we had to secure our posts with these concrete anchors.
30:15Then we start building all of our floor joists.
30:17We'll deck it out.
30:18So back here is going to be the party deck area.
30:22And then right here on the edge, Natalie and Parker will be able to dip their toes in the stock
30:27tank pool.
30:35Uh-oh.
30:36It's starting to rain.
30:38Let's get the pool in place before it fills up with water and we're not able to move it.
30:43All right.
30:44Well, it's already starting to fill up with water.
30:46All right, nice and easy.
30:50That's good.
30:51Yeah, that story's coming.
30:58Oh, shoot.
31:01Yeah, we were supposed to have an electrical run underneath this to hook up to the top there.
31:06It's going to make it trickier now that the deck's in.
31:10There's really only one person to blame for this electrical problem.
31:14And that's this guy right here.
31:17I just have so many things going on with this project.
31:19It just slipped my mind.
31:22We can do it, but it's going to be a lot more challenging.
31:25And we're going to have to get underneath the deck.
31:26I'm still going to have to trench it all the way back.
31:28I'm going to get an electrician back out here and figure out
31:30how we're going to get this run underneath this deck.
31:44I was able to get the electrician back out to run a line to the dipping pool
31:51while we installed countertops
31:56and get the board and batten up.
31:59We got it, got it.
32:15Today isn't just a race to the finish line.
32:17It's a relay race.
32:26We're painting the exterior.
32:30Landscaping.
32:32Installing the walkway and pavers.
32:35And we're going to bring in all the furniture.
32:40Arches are making a comeback.
32:42It's a really big day for such a small space.
32:55We're going to bring in all the furniture.
32:55Good thing that was an impact glass.
32:57My heart rate just went so high.
32:59I hope Natalie Parker don't find out about that.
33:03You know what that was?
33:04What was that?
33:05What was that?
33:05That, my friend, was a curve ball.
33:08Oh, we've seen many of those on this project.
33:14We've been kind of learning on the curve and learning on the fly.
33:17I'm learning on the curve of expression.
33:19It's small, but you have every area that you need.
33:22It's beautiful.
33:23It's got an open concept.
33:24To me, this feels bigger than 900 square feet.
33:26It really does.
33:27This house, the perfect mix of modern,
33:30which is definitely what Parker was leaning towards.
33:32And then Natalie has all those organic textures and finishes in there.
33:38Underneath all of this are shipping containers.
33:41Like, you almost forget that after looking at it.
33:45This actually turned out really nice for a small space.
33:49Water temp is perfect.
33:50You're testing the waters?
33:51Complete privacy.
33:53I love it.
33:53What's so unique is that this property,
33:56mama's got her house over here.
33:57But when you step into this side, this feels like its own moment.
34:01I thought for sure we would finish this project under our time frame.
34:06But it actually took just about as long as a regular house did.
34:11900 square feet.
34:12Heck yeah, I thought we were going to be done early.
34:14But we got a little overzealous.
34:16Was this a record time that we furnished the house?
34:18Are we done?
34:20We didn't build it fast, but we furnished it fast.
34:32Oh, man, I have to say, lessons have been learned on this project.
34:38Oh, yeah.
34:38Oh, I love that.
34:41So sweet.
34:43So what do you think it's going to be like?
34:44I don't know.
34:45I'm excited to see it, though.
34:47Do you think they've got the wine wool in?
34:49Or some type of wine thing?
34:51I mean, for your sake, I hope so.
34:53You know what, though?
34:54The trials and tribulations make the ending that much more glorious.
34:59Okay.
35:00Oh, my gosh.
35:02What is he doing?
35:03Where did this swan come from?
35:08What are you doing?
35:13I just hope this bankyard space takes Natalie Parker's breath away like that just did for me.
35:18You're good.
35:20It's been hard driving past it a couple weeks and not being able to go in there and seeing all
35:24that dirt.
35:25There's so much commotion going on.
35:27There's people in and out all day.
35:29We're kind of wondering, like, what are they doing today?
35:31Is that the electrician?
35:32What's going on?
35:32Is that the plumber?
35:33Yeah.
35:33What are they doing?
35:34And what lighting are they installing?
35:36We definitely have no idea what's going on on the inside.
35:39I think both of us will be good to finally have kind of our own space.
35:43And, you know, my mom's obviously our best friend and we love her so much.
35:48But I'm sure she'll be happy to have her own space, too.
35:50I know I'll be happy to have more privacy.
35:53They don't really have that far to travel, so what do you say we meet them out front?
35:57I love it.
35:58Okay.
35:58All right, let's do it.
35:59Okay.
35:59Hurry up.
35:59They might be coming in.
36:00I know, right?
36:00Hold on.
36:01All right, are you going to go check it out?
36:02Yeah, let's go check it out.
36:04Do you think they've been peeking through these massive windows?
36:06I think it's been tempting for them.
36:08Yeah.
36:08But I mean...
36:09I don't think they peeked.
36:10Mom said she would keep them away.
36:12Let's hope she does.
36:13I hear footsteps.
36:14You hear the grapples?
36:14Yeah, here they come.
36:16Here they are.
36:17Oh, look at you guys.
36:19All right, so you do not have a far journey.
36:21No.
36:21Tell me the truth.
36:22Did you get a little sneaky peeky?
36:23Because I know you pass this every time you come home.
36:26Maybe here and there, but we have done our best to stay away.
36:29Oh, yeah.
36:30Isn't it crazy to think that these used to be,
36:32actually still are, shipping containers?
36:34Yeah.
36:36I think it's real special that obviously you did that to honor your dad,
36:39but you also grew up, and this is the same location
36:43that you had some really cool childhood memories.
36:44This is your playground, right?
36:45I learned how to roller skate over here,
36:47and I think it's a beautiful full circle moment.
36:50I agree.
36:51Yeah.
36:51It looks like a beautiful house.
36:54I definitely love the huge windows for the natural light,
36:57and I love that the door looks so similar to the windows as well.
37:01Yeah.
37:01Yes.
37:02We can't wait for you to see the inside.
37:03Okay.
37:04Let's go.
37:04After you.
37:05Member Park, you might have the container.
37:07Okay, I will.
37:07I'll do my best.
37:10Wow.
37:12This is beautiful.
37:15Incredible.
37:15This is stunning.
37:17Okay.
37:18Let's go.
37:18After you.
37:19Okay.
37:19Okay.
37:22Wow.
37:24Wow.
37:24This is beautiful.
37:27Incredible.
37:28This is stunning.
37:29Oh, my God.
37:31Oh, wow.
37:32I already see it.
37:33I see what Parker noticed first.
37:35I knew it.
37:35Yeah.
37:35But he didn't have much on his wish list, so.
37:37No, it was one thing.
37:38Yeah.
37:39It was one thing and one thing only.
37:40That's pretty cool.
37:40I've never seen anything like that.
37:42That's very cool.
37:42Parker's happy.
37:43Now we're going to make Natalie happy with the rest of the house.
37:45I mean, yeah.
37:46Yes.
37:46Let's check out this kitchen.
37:47This is stunning.
37:49Full-sized everything.
37:51Full-sized everything.
37:52This is amazing.
37:52Wow.
37:53And a pot filler.
37:54Pot filler.
37:55I've never had a pot filler before.
37:56The little things.
37:56The doors.
37:57The natural light.
37:58I mean.
37:59You don't even need lights in here.
38:00Except when it's night time.
38:01Yeah.
38:02Yeah.
38:02Forgot about that one.
38:04Look at these pendants.
38:06It's that real concrete.
38:07Wow.
38:07That's that organic you were going for now.
38:10They're beautiful.
38:11I love that.
38:11You guys fit so much in such a little space.
38:13I love the limewash.
38:15Wow.
38:16The limewash is incredible.
38:17Yeah.
38:17It's beautiful.
38:18Honestly, like, dream kitchen.
38:21I gotta say, it doesn't look like a shipping container at all.
38:24That was the goal.
38:25Yeah.
38:25It's amazing, but it's hard not to notice.
38:28Oh, yeah.
38:29You weren't supposed to see that yet.
38:30Yeah, but there's a big window.
38:32Well, we weren't planning on going outside until later,
38:34but I guess we gotta go now.
38:36Come on.
38:36We gotta do it.
38:37Pick a door or any door to go out of.
38:38OK.
38:39OK.
38:41Wow.
38:42Wow.
38:43Y'all fit a pool back here.
38:47This is a little extra touch for both of you.
38:48This is amazing.
38:50And the fur babies, of course.
38:51Yeah, they jump right on it.
38:53Oh my gosh, they're going to love this.
38:53They are definitely going to jump right on that.
38:55This is amazing.
38:56I can see a lot of late night little dips over here.
38:59This is great.
38:59This is beautiful.
39:00It's perfect.
39:01You've got this fence with privacy,
39:02so it really does feel like a separate property,
39:05even though it's still part of the same parcel, right?
39:07Yeah.
39:08It is.
39:08I also love that I know you guys had like a limited space to work with,
39:12but nothing feels like it was forced or like miniaturized.
39:16Like everything feels like it's honestly the perfect size for us.
39:19I don't feel like we're lacking anything.
39:21Yeah, I mean, we maximized all the square footage outside and inside.
39:24I think we should go see the rest of the indoor though,
39:26because we're not done yet, shall we?
39:27All right, let's go see it.
39:28There's about 350 more square feet to see.
39:34I can't stop looking at this arch.
39:37The arches, I love it because shipping containers is a lot of lines.
39:40The arch has softened that up.
39:42Enjoy the arch as we walk through the hallway.
39:44Wow.
39:45Look at this.
39:46This does not feel like a container at all.
39:50It feels so peaceful in here.
39:52I love it.
39:53It feels like your own private resort.
39:55Yeah, it does.
39:56You have the access to the outdoor from here.
39:58It doesn't feel, again, like I can't believe this room is this big.
40:02What do you say we show them our favorite bathroom in the house?
40:06Oh, man.
40:07Let's go take a look.
40:08Let's go.
40:09My God, it looks like a spa in here.
40:13Whoa, the shower.
40:14There's arches everywhere.
40:16Yeah.
40:17Wow, look at the tub.
40:18That's beautiful.
40:20It's fluted.
40:21The river rock.
40:22Hello, organic.
40:23Yeah.
40:23And I love the grout lines.
40:24Like, it definitely gives it that old world look to it.
40:29But then, you know, you have the more modern cabinets.
40:32Yes.
40:32That balance it out.
40:34Oh, man.
40:35I could just stare at this shower all day.
40:36I guess we should keep it going.
40:37That's a nice little bag.
40:38That's good.
40:39Admire this kitchen one more time, gosh.
40:42This kitchen is so good.
40:45It's so good.
40:46Chef's kiss, pun intended.
40:47It's the perfect combination of my style and her style.
40:51I'm in love with how light and airy it is inside.
40:53That was a lot in not a lot of square footage.
40:56Yeah.
40:57Oh, man.
40:58All in all, this is basically three containers.
41:00Yeah.
41:00900 square feet.
41:02You have one beautiful resort-style main suite.
41:05And you have this whole outdoor area.
41:07And we kept it within the budget of $200,000.
41:09I can't thank you guys enough.
41:11It's just been a pleasure.
41:12It's way more than I could ever have expected.
41:14And I can't wait to, you know, make more memories here.
41:17Speaking of memories?
41:18Yeah.
41:18We also have some news.
41:21We're actually expecting a little one.
41:24Yep.
41:24What?
41:25Whoa!
41:26Oh, my gosh.
41:26Stop.
41:27Okay, wait a minute.
41:28Your childhood memories are now going to become your child's memories.
41:31Oh, my gosh.
41:32I love that.
41:33Mom is right there, abuela.
41:34Thank God.
41:35Yeah, you're looking for that.
41:36Yeah, I'm like, thank goodness.
41:38Yeah, it's full circle.
41:39If you think about it, the house, the containers, the dad, the baby, everything.
41:42Full circle.
41:43Full circle moment.
41:44Full circle moment, yeah.
41:45It's pretty impressive.
41:50Yes.
41:51Enjoy y'all.
41:51We'll do, yes.
41:52See you later.
41:53Bye.
41:53Congrats again.
41:54This is the best happy ending we've ever had.
41:56We've got nine months to build the addition.
41:59Oh, man.
