00:04we're back on the road in our trusty traveling auction house on the hunt for treasures hidden
00:11in homes all across britain oh yes finding value in those overlooked objects auction supremos
00:21james broad and brianie harford wow the star lot of the day and transforming has-beens into must
00:29halves restorers jj charmers robin johnson lauren wood and saf vakir our mission beautiful to give
00:39those unloved and forgotten gems a new lease of life and make their owners some much needed money
00:45we've got three four thousand everything we find and fix will go under our gavel as we bring our
00:53auctions to you four thousand one hundred pounds wow you know what we say have gamble will travel
01:07it's always gorgeous when i bring you to scotland do you know what it is that's right the sun is
01:14shining
01:14as auctioneer izzy and restorer jj motor through the scottish lowlands
01:21i'm wondering if we're going to make it there today scotland is not a flat country right
01:27unfortunately our wee blue van is not built for hills
01:35today the team is en route to the village of renton in western bartonshire
01:41is it not these vases that you grow pies and sun i don't think so no i think that's how
01:49we see
01:50that's why we need help bruce we don't even know if we don't even know what it is we're doing
01:54that
01:56they're meeting brother and sister bruce and annette as they begin the very difficult task of clearing the
02:03home that they grew up in dad bruce senior and mum anna were childhood sweethearts and their
02:10lifelong love story began right here in renton well mum stayed here her whole life dad moved here when
02:17he was about 14. from the stories i've heard i think there was a few people after my dad but
02:23mum was obviously
02:24the one that won their family has lived and run a business here for more than 80 years two generations
02:34he's lived here my grandfather came here in 1942 i believe when they retired my mom and dad took over
02:41the business so when we were growing up this was actually a shop here so which was quite handy for
02:48us
02:48because we could run in at night time and steal sweeties from bruce is now the third generation
02:56to take charge of the family's bakery business it's been a happy house a happy childhood my parents were
03:03good parents dad died in 2015 just shortly after that we found that mum was kind of deteriorating and
03:12not doing so well mentally or physically anna was diagnosed with alzheimer's and sadly passed away
03:20in 2024 the house has been vacant ever since and the family have decided that the time is finally right
03:27to clear it we've left here a long time it's up to us to have to pack it all up
03:33and get rid of it all so
03:38don't worry annette our team is here to lend a hand right oh jj this is as far as we're
03:46going
03:46we'll go ahead and we'll find out what's happened
03:59hello how are you coming thank you very much
04:05how are we looking forward to it quite excited this was a shop this is a bakery shop this room
04:11this was a what they called the front shop back in the day there's one thing you should know about
04:16jj and that is he loves the bakery yeah that's true and there's something you know about izzy she
04:21loves being nosy and oh yes you'll have this is a nice big house to be nosy in and my
04:26mother was a
04:27hoarder so she's got stuff flying all over the place i'll give you a shout if i need any help
04:31certainly i'll be here see you guys later thank you okay you start here i'll start the bakery don't
04:36get too distracted you better stay focused guys there's a lot of ground to cover in just one day
04:45with four bedrooms two reception rooms and an office full of generations of things to sort through
04:54is he's hunting indoors for hidden treasures to take to auction and look at that fabulous stained glass
05:00window while jj's on the prowl outside for projects that could use a bit of tlc
05:16what's going to be in a box i would suggest that that is a nine carat gold case it's not
05:23marked on
05:24the outside so if it is marked at all it's going to be on the inside of the back cover
05:29so we've got
05:29that watch this is i love these old boxes so this is a ladies wrist watch and this one is
05:37stamped 375
05:38so that tells me it's nine carat gold and what's in this one last but not least now this one
05:45this
05:46strap is what we call an integral strap because it is physically attached to the watch the good news is
05:54is that it is also stamped 375 and k9 for nine carat so i've got two nine carat gold ladies
06:01watches and
06:02then one that i'm confident the case itself is nine carat gold what a fabulous trio a vintage box to
06:10timor an unboxed herco and a boxed marvin all top quality nine carat gold pieces and definitely
06:19wants to watch on auction day not bad for draw not bad it's a superb start what do we have
06:27here
06:31a motorbike oh yamaha it's not a motorbike it's a trike hold on jj you're meant to be scouting for
06:40restoration projects not getting sidetracked by the toys this is a yamaha twin 1100cc trike motorcycle
06:49it belongs to bruce but hasn't been roadworthy since 2017 hello what have you got here well i thought
06:59it was a motorbike but it's actually a trike oh that's kind of cool it's so cool isn't it it
07:04weighs
07:04a ton i would love to try and get it out what we need to do is just get a
07:08little bit of momentum behind
07:09it oh give it some welly look at that right how cool is that i mean look at these saddle
07:18bags and
07:18everything i don't think i've seen you this excited in a long time all right first things first i'll
07:23try turn it over if you hear the sound of a revving motorbike running out come running out in the
07:28meantime
07:29i'll make a few phone calls to some motorbike friends right see you later you have motorbike
07:33friends i know everyone jj very cool after izzy's done a bit of research this trike could make a nice
07:41amounted auction but you'll need to get it running first i'll make this work
07:47the van will have to stay parked outside but there's plenty of room to set up shop
07:58right first things first let's just turn the key and see if it's got any life in it unsurprisingly
08:05no lights have come on so that would suggest that the battery's out so i'm gonna have to start there
08:14let's find the battery i'm presuming there you go there it is
08:21see how easy it is to get to
08:25right i'm gonna need some tools a long walk to the van
08:31long walk and a long job if you can't get the trike running it will have a major impact on
08:36the
08:37price izzy can hope for at the auction and bruce and annette really do need every penny they can get
08:45we're planning on selling the house and but there is stuff that's needing done to it but all the time
08:51that mum was here that past 10 years wasn't as if you could do work roundabout mum it was her
08:56house so
08:57there's really been nothing for all the house has been kind of feeling for quite a wee while
09:03upstairs had a radiator leak so this part of the ceiling have come down and the problems are more
09:09than just cosmetic we never knew about it because the house was more or less shut down apart from this
09:15room you know where my mum was in and so it was about three or four months after the actual
09:19leak
09:20happened that went in there for something the roof then they can't even think about putting the house on
09:25the market until the repairs are finished but with costs climbing into the hundreds possibly thousands
09:31of pounds the pressure is really on
09:37so let's hope jj can get that trike running
09:42just reading it not even five that should be sitting at 12 so
09:48hopefully i can just charge it rather than replace it
09:55there it is
09:59let's get some charge in it
10:05wow there is a lot of g-plan in here i'm drawn to these two because these two
10:11are g-plan but they are koford larsen
10:18ib koford larsen was a danish architect and designer a pioneer of danish mid-century modern
10:25and an underrated yet compelling figure of the era famed for the distinctive square handles on his g-plan
10:31pieces now what i have spotted is this handle is broken here and that's a real shame because that's
10:38going to really affect the value possibly a good one to sell as a restoration project
10:43as jj has his hands full right now if you like to be positive it's a great designer and it's
10:49a great
10:49range the wardrobe can go in with an estimate of 50 to 100 pounds while the chest of drawers will
10:55hopefully fetch 40 to 80 pounds despite the damaged handle
11:02battery recharged it's the moment of truth for jj slightly short on power i'm pretty short on time
11:16hmm we need that engine roaring if it's going to sell jj
11:21jj looks busy out there hello jj hello you look busy beavering away yeah it's getting there
11:32but it's not properly firing so there's signs of life oh well that's positive yeah it is but i will
11:39not be happy until it's properly ticking over i won't distract you anymore i'll leave you to it see you
11:46later jj and izzy can't afford to take their foot off the gas but with the restoration side of the
11:53team stalling we'll need to find as many auction ready pieces as possible ah now i haven't been through
12:01this one right let's hope these drawers are hiding as many treasures as the last one
12:10oh getting excited oh jewelry boxes izzy balmer in a sweetie shop okay this one's a victorian brooch
12:21now what i'm looking for is to see if it's marked it isn't but it it looks like gold to
12:27me and i have
12:28to say in the victorian period they very often didn't mark their gold and then we've got a very faded
12:33photograph here in the back now a lot of people would call this morning jewelry because of this
12:39glazed compartment now i'm going to value this based on it being nine karat gold you would be looking
12:44at 100 to 150 pounds on this brooch another fabulous find you're on a roll izzy gosh what's
12:52next it's like a lucky dip the drawer of dreams also turns up a nine karat gold turn of the
12:5820th
12:59century brooch oh isn't that sweet an early 20th century diamond ring a pretty victorian acrostic
13:07ring with one missing gem and finally last but not least as well as a nine karat gold edwardian seed
13:15pearl and garnet ring do you know what it just really goes to show there is treasure everywhere in this
13:20house best keep looking then easy who knows what you'll turn up next
13:27this house is crammed with things bruce and annette's mum tucked away as her health sadly declined
13:35when my dad passed i began to notice a change in my mom you know as she began to
13:41like keep piles and piles of local newspapers i think i found that more overwhelming initially coming in
13:48just going through everything because my mom the way she was with her alzheimer's would hide things
13:55all the time she would wrap things up didn't sit right with me while mom was alive to start clearing
14:01things so nothing was done till after she passed it's not easy for any family to deal with clearing
14:08their relatives belongings but at least today izzy and jj are on hand to help
14:15i was saying that mom was a bit of a collector of things and didn't like to fling anything away
14:21i
14:21thought you might be interested in this i found this in the bottom of a wardroom grandma's wedding
14:25fell which was my mother's mum june 1929 wow oh my goodness me this is beautiful look how
14:38the dc yeah look at that lace work this is a picture of my grandma and grandpa and she's actually
14:46wearing that veil i know so lovely what a fabulous photo well i want to make as much money as
14:56i can
14:56for you and bruce to do the repairs that are needed to the house but also to do justice for
15:01your mom and
15:01dad's items so i will leave you taking a trip down memory lane and i'm going to go and keep
15:06searching
15:07okay thank you very much bye with an item like this the sentimental value far outweighs any money
15:15it might make so it's staying with the family unlike the trike which jj is still trying to resurrect
15:25this thing was showing signs of life to start but there just wasn't enough power
15:33so i've got a fresh battery with any luck it will start if this doesn't work nothing will
15:44it's make or break time if it doesn't start it will seriously dent the auction estimate
15:58never in doubt
16:02okay need to get it cleaned up now check for any more fixes but ah that's satisfying you've got the
16:12trike
16:12purring like a kitten but there's still more to do to get it auction ready
16:20time for a wash nice warm water got some proper cleaner some warm water
16:32some bubbles
16:37could have a charity car wash make a fortune and donate all the proceeds to the repair fund
16:43oh that is satisfying
16:47you'll have that trike looking good as new in no time jj ready for someone else to hit the road
16:56while jj motors on with the trike there's still plenty of house to rummage through
17:02not empty
17:07it's heavy that's heavy that's heavy i was not expecting that to be that heavy
17:13lots of coins lots of coins right now these are mostly british coins what i'm after essentially are
17:25silver coins pre-1920 and then any that are between 1920 and 1946 and that's because pre-1920
17:34the silver coins were 100 silver between 1920 and 1946 they were 50 silver
17:42hmm there's no sign of silver so far izzy will have to carefully sort through the remaining coins to
17:48see if she can find any hopefully if there's a decent stash of silver among them they could help
17:54rake in the cash at auction
17:58that's the finishing touch well actually this is here we go
18:09couple of splutters and now humming happily
18:19tell me that's not ready for auction you've worked wonders jj and the trike could haul in a whopping
18:26one thousand nine hundred to two thousand four hundred pounds
18:31now you just need to find something else
18:35which is exactly yes it is i would recognize that arm anywhere
18:41what izzy needs to do too i was not expecting that i was expecting a spindle back but this is
18:47an
18:47urcole sofa three seater sofa now it's urcole which is a big tick less of a tick is the color
18:54it's the dark
18:55brown which is a hard sell but i can still sell this i'm just wondering if there's any more
19:06oh i like the look of this it seems izzy's wish is jj's command
19:12it is an urcole i love this it looks like it's in solid condition get out in the sunshine
19:28is that for me like structurally it's all in place sometimes these uh spindles pop out
19:35and this wood can start to sort of lose its shape but it has not done that but you can
19:42tell it has
19:42been sat in many a time over the years look how the finish has worn off i've actually seen there's
19:47matching sofa inside a dark one as well well we could definitely sell the two together nice so make
19:53them match properly i'll leave it in your very capable hands why thank you okay the urcole pieces will join
20:03the three gold ladies wristwatches the selection of brooches and rings is he found in the landing
20:09sideboard the collection of coins and both the koford larson chest of drawers and wardrobe
20:17izzy's digging has also unearthed a serpentine lamp
20:22and with all hands on deck bruce and annette have added a carved indian octagonal table to the list
20:30and we can't forget the fully working tripe motorcycle a great start but no time to let up
20:36now well there's a part of me that would love and hate to sand this entire thing down and get
20:42that
20:43natural timber look out i know i do not have time for it so instead these dowel joints here have
20:51slipped
20:51through so i'm going to start by putting them back in place time is of the essence with this job
21:00even
21:01minor fixes can be trickier than first thought rubber mallet just so it won't do any damage to the wood
21:09itself you've come the whole way out just far enough to get some glue into it that's a spot wood
21:16glue
21:18the glue will not only strengthen the joints but also fill in any caps
21:27both above many urcole spindle chairs show their age through structural issues
21:32and this one is no exception jj's fixes will strengthen it for years to come
21:38i can do the other one
21:46all right i'm just going to give this a clean up now i'm happy with how this fix has worked
21:51whoever's
21:52going to buy this at auction is most likely going to strip it back because this light color is the
21:57far
21:57more preferable finish i'm going to get this cleaned and then it'll be ready for auction
22:02even the minor fixes you've carried out here have bumped up the value jj
22:06and along with the sofa this lot could make up to three figures
22:16you can't really miss that can you that really is a leak through the ceiling well i can see why
22:22they
22:22need some money to repair that best get rummaging then izzy there must be something in here
22:32oh what's this this looks like a stereoscope let's have a look
22:42so what we have here is it's a late victorian or edwardian stereoscope
22:48first dreamed up by physicist sir charles wheatston in 1832 stereoscopy was the victorians version of
22:56virtual reality they used special lenses and photos to bring images to life in 3d this one belonged to
23:04annette and bruce's grandparents but is sadly damaged what a lovely set to be able to sell the
23:10whole thing together ready to go i would say comfortably 30 to 50 pounds if jj gets it in good
23:17condition
23:18brace yourself jj your next project is incoming hello hello how are you doing i am good i think
23:26this is really very charming jj what is this it's a stereoscope a stereoscope so you view through here
23:35it's a viewfinder basically you stick your card in here but this is the bit that's broken so there's
23:43nothing to hold this in place and then we also need this to be able to slide up and down
23:47so you can bring
23:48it into focus i am going to fix this even if it's just so i can play with it no
23:52no you don't have
23:53time for playing jj absolutely not better get started just figured out the first thing i'm
23:59going to have to fix on it if you look at this section here it's kind of mal aligned running
24:04a
24:04bit of an angle so that means that when you try and twist it to get it in focus all
24:08jammed up not to
24:10mention it's also missing a handle here so i need to try and get it off and then put it
24:15back on
24:15straight hopefully i can just roll it right off the end there we go easy does it okay got that
24:24off
24:25i'm going to try and fashion some sort of handle a wee knob to go on the end here
24:32so i'll go have a wee dig around the van see what i can find well the van has never
24:37failed us yet
24:41okay found this might be sure what it is i think it's maybe an old piece of jewelry or something
24:47like
24:47that yeah it's got a little hole in it so how can i get this to go on
24:55might just go on with a touch of brute force maybe we tap with a hammer if in doubt give
24:59it a clout
25:04that's quite a firm hold just needs a wee touch of glue just to make sure that it's happy and
25:11stays
25:11there that fulfills the function we'll leave you to it back indoors izzy's hunting high
25:24finding a west german cuckoo clock and low no nothing under the piano but it's always worth
25:31looking because you never know and jj well he's turning his attention to that damaged picture
25:37holder on the stereoscope i'm just going to try and come up with a replacement section here i've got a
25:43a wee patch of brass that i know i can cut to shape and bend the brass elements should hopefully
25:49hold
25:49the pictures at the front of the stereoscope in place i'm trying to chop this up with a set of
25:57tin snips
25:59so this is very thin and it's a soft metal hopefully this should go through it a bit too much
26:06of a fuss
26:09oh careful jj once the brass elements have been cut they will hopefully be folded to become the slots
26:15the pictures can be slipped into i think i need to pop this in a vice actually try and get
26:22a good bend
26:22on it don't have one in the shed i was looking around the garage earlier i think there's one in
26:27here
26:29good thinking joj resourceful as ever and with a bit of luck the vice will help speed up this tricky
26:36restoration perfect
26:46oh ice cream there's no time for that the day's nearly done but izzy's still hunting for more
26:54saleable fines what's on me trolley a pair of champagne buckets and i mean i love champagne
27:02so i'm always tempted by anything bubbly it's a bit of fun isn't it a bit of kitsch to have
27:07these and
27:08on those special occasions when you're popping open a bottle of bubbly you can get these out
27:13low value though 20 to 30 pounds for the two of them every pound helps but we could really do
27:20with
27:20a few more big ticket fines if we're going to patch up the hole in the ceiling jj's racing to
27:27finish the
27:27stereoscope restoration he's replacing a missing wooden handle and luckily the van has provided one
27:33that will match
27:39that wood glue is the thing that's really going to hold it in place
27:43super glue we'll just set it for the time being so that i don't need to stand here for the
27:49rest of
27:50the day holding it super glue is perfect for quick and small repairs like this that handle will need
27:56staining before auction but the glue needs to dry first right give that a minute to set
28:03and i'll come back put it all together and then have a play which gives izzy a little more time
28:11to
28:11squeeze in a last minute plumage
28:15there's nothing in there
28:22these look like jewelry boxes let's have a look empty oh here we go here we go
28:34this is all gold nine karat gold gate link bracelet i mean look at this lovely nine karat gold flat
28:42curb
28:43link chain and it's heavy these aren't hollow these are solid links a nine karat gold chain of that
28:49size could fetch a huge summit auction not an emerald but that could be a green chrysoprase
28:59but it's also in nine karat gold there's some nice bits here there's a couple of lots here but
29:05collectively for all of it then you're looking at a thousand to fifteen hundred pounds pretty decent
29:11the jewelry will be split into individual lots as well as the large gold chain there's the necklace
29:17with green stone set pendant a gate bracelet with heart-shaped lock a nine karat gold celtic
29:24cross and an unmarked barrel pierce chain that will need closer inspection as izzy suspects it could
29:31be gold while the rest of the gold pieces will go into a single lot oh someone has got to
29:39buy this
29:40in just one day the team have sifted through a lifetime of belongings treasures tucked away in
29:46dusty drawers and buried deep in boxes izzy uncovered some really eye-catching pieces
29:53there's just one final job making sure the stereoscope is in perfect working order
29:59oh that is spectacular great work and with that our day is done
30:06thank you for a wonderful day by the way you're looking forward to the auction
30:09looking forward to it yeah definitely right we need to get on the road don't want to check he's not
30:13put any pies in the van i can't make any promises see you on auction day thank you bye
30:26bye
30:27what day what a day over to you now izzy to get the best prices at auction
30:40five weeks later the team are cruising scotland's roads on the way to peebles
30:44a scenic borders town and royal borough spanning the river tweed i hope they brought something from
30:51the bakery you're always thinking of your stomach jj well i was actually thinking maybe you'll make
30:56them some dough oh how long have you been proving that one for that was genuinely brilliant it's good
31:02wasn't it i'm quite pleased with myself with that our hosts people's auction house are based in a
31:08former school but it's izzy who'll be hoping to earn top marks from behind the rostrum today
31:14here we go how's that i think that is pretty near perfect jj
31:20while we set up shop and potential bidders take a final look at the auction items
31:25we've heard word that unfortunately bruce won't be able to make it today so annette is being joined
31:32by her friend audrey oh oh hello how are we fine lovely to see you i've got a little surprise
31:39for
31:40you under here uh that's stereo scope that i found oh yes lurking in your place tell me what you
31:47think
31:47of this oh wow so you need to have a little go of it i never remember queen with this
31:53really uh-huh
31:55well grandma had it and it was always fascinating because as a kid at my age 3d was quite a
32:02big thing
32:03even with all of today's technology this thing still absolutely fascinated me i just think it's
32:08it's amazing and now that it's back in one piece so i know because it was it was all broken
32:12so you've done
32:13really well right i'll let you go in and get comfy and i'm going to get this stuff thank you
32:17thank you
