01:25what is going on robin roger's saying hello to the cows
01:30queen trades more come despite the rain our top-notch team are bringing the sunshine so focus
01:39please we have an important job to do there's gotta be money in that i'm sure the lid comes off
01:44it
01:44yes they're meeting johnny aka dj pep and his partner donna in his one-bed flat
01:53well i'm obviously the quiet one i call this young lady lamor not donna because
01:57lamor has a bit more va-va-va room about it yeah yeah i just let him go i'm with
02:03it he just waffles on
02:04doesn't he johnny and donna met five years ago we just started talking one day and that was it i'm
02:13like a bit of an earthquake where lamor is the grounded one johnny is also a shopping aficionado
02:19who just can't stop adding to his collections so i'll phone up the more send pictures of the item
02:25the more will say don't buy it you don't need it yeah when i was growing up i'd start off
02:31with toy
02:31shop i still love toy shops i want the six million dollar man in his box because i used to
02:38have one
02:38of those i just the thrill of something i look at it out of it i've got to get it
02:42i've got to buy it
02:43but johnny's extravagant shopping habits have become a problem since downsizing from a four-bed house
02:49to a one-bed flat oh everything had to go into storage and when he sells he'll just buy more
02:55and
02:56more it seems that johnny's deep love for his parents is connected to his shopping for childhood
03:03nostalgia it's like as you get older christmas becomes full of ghosts sadly you can't bring people
03:11back who aren't here anymore but you can bring back those memories that those those wonderful humans
03:17in stored in you just magical moments but with his flat now brimming over into not one but two
03:26storage units costing over a thousand pounds a year johnny knows that it's time to slim down
03:33i'd like to move it on to the next owner so they can fall in love with it like i
03:38did once
03:40well i know the perfect pair to help
03:44and the windscreen wipers off ready to rumble i am
03:50nice cheerful door hello you two how are you follow me come on come and get your steps in
04:00izzy robin welcome to the beach apartment this is donna hiya nice to meet you hiya nice to meet you
04:07you are welcome to roam around the apartment go anywhere you want to go really true so when i go
04:13like this is your time to run around the apartment and have a little look so izzy and robin i'm
04:20gonna
04:20start out there ready are you ready steady in positions come on
04:27blimey that's woken us all up with just one day robin and izzy have their work cut out
04:33izzy's mission is to unearth the auction showstoppers even more candles lots of candles
04:40while robin's in search of salvageable gems oh lovely big angle poise look at that
04:47that's a great lamp preliminary flat assessment done izzy and robin are heading to check out the two
04:54crammed storage units three miles away right so while izzy delves into storage unit one robin's setting up our
05:02little blue van and as there's no parking at the flat he's using the spacious yard at the storage
05:07unit ready for action that's quite nice hello what have we got here we've got a very tired milk churn
05:21so this one's in brass and it's numbered three oh gosh it's got bags of character doesn't it
05:28definitely been through the wars this one very dented rusty i can even see a hole at the signs
05:34but we know that even holes are appealing izzy especially to buyers chasing the vintage farmhouse
05:40look you know what this is in quite poor condition but someone is still going to want this now yes
05:47of
05:47course you're not going to be able to store anything in it unless you wanted to use it as a
05:51planter in the
05:52garden and you could have some lovely flowers growing out of this and trailing out of it you'd be
05:56looking at around 30 to 40 pounds at auction a fabulous first find one item down two containers to
06:04go robin's turn for a good old delve well that is rammed to the rafters what we got here it's
06:16quite a
06:16nice grandfather clock actually does look like it's missing a mechanism have another rummage robin
06:25oh i wonder if this could be yeah i think it is bingo quite dirty at the bottom ah
06:35that's not dirt those little holes are woodworm and by the dust that's coming out of those holes
06:42i would say that's still live a grandfather clock in pieces and with woodworm is this a project even
06:50worth robin's effort izzy hey grandfather clock it's got a really nice face with it
07:00got some woodworm oh no some little mates oh that is bad isn't it is it live yes oh it
07:07is isn't it well
07:08we definitely cannot sell it with live woodworm an auction house will not take it i can treat the wood
07:14them that's all i can do really okay treating it means that i can get even if it's low value
07:19get a
07:20couple of bids for it at least then it's not going to landfill okay because that's where it's currently
07:24destined for thanks izzy no worries do you need a hand carrying or you got this one no i'll put
07:29it on
07:29my shoulder okay while robin gets going johnny has big ideas for any money raised as you get older you
07:38seem
07:38to want to rekindle you i'd like to go at morcombe promenade with a chopper now a chopper it's a
07:46bike
07:46i used to have as a little boy and you'd have a big back wheel and you'd have a little
07:50wheel in front
07:52and i can only remember briefly having it i'd like to get one of those i'd like to get tassels
07:57on it
07:58put my leather jacket on it collar up and then ride down the promenade with the music born to be
08:04wild
08:06that would tick my boat i won't be there that day he does that
08:11these vintage classics are highly collectible and do hold their sale value of up to 1 000 pounds
08:18but johnny has another plan too now i'd obviously want to spend something on on lamar because you know
08:25i do realize i give you lots of headaches she's a big fan of benson boone maybe a vip package
08:31to see
08:32benson boone if we also want to include the 300 pounds for a pair of tickets we need to get
08:39our
08:39skates on to meet the 1 300 pounds total now how's robin getting on with that poorly old clock
08:48this clock has definitely seen better days well the bottom half has anyway the top half's quite nice
08:55quite a nice little detail tiny bit of stain on some of those marks glass is in good condition
09:01the streamlined symmetry places this grandfather clock firmly in the art deco period
09:08i imagine with a little bit of clock oil that that base will work again just got to get the
09:14the weights and the pendulum right the biggest problem though is down this end where
09:21this entire panel of the base or the plinth is littered with woodworm woodworm likes softwood this bottom
09:29panel looks like a softwood panel which has been over veneered with an oak veneer the woodworm's eaten
09:38through the veneer and really attacked the softwood below it the rest of the clock's fine because it's
09:43solid oak best get the woodworm treatment on quick sharp robin now an auction house
09:51quite rightly wouldn't take wooden furniture with woodworm in it because the worms are actually the
09:59larvae of beetles bugs they've got wings they can fly so when the larvae come out and they hatch they
10:05could transfer from this piece to another piece it wouldn't take long for the woodware to get in and
10:09completely infest it so we've got to get rid of it active infestations of woodworm require immediate
10:17action the most effective time to apply is between spring and late summer when adult beetles are emerging
10:25once the liquid's gone into every single little hole every little tunnel then i know that the wood's been
10:32treated what i'm going to do now is leave this stuff to do its job and then when i come
10:40back
10:40i can start work on the rest of it there's masses still to look through in the storage containers
10:46let's pop you down there plenty to keep you busy
10:54it's a lectern oh dear nice bit of oak i know i say it time and time again but it's
11:03dark brown
11:03furniture and it's really hard to sell and it's a crying shame because what you've got here is a solid
11:09piece of wood and it's functional and it's stood the test of time you could have it in your home
11:16you
11:16could use it as a reading stand but it is stuck in a container so i just think let's sell
11:21it let's
11:22find a new home for it agreed especially as the container's costing johnny money when this could
11:29raise up to 50 pounds at auction anything else izzy nothing in this box particularly that's a shame oh you
11:41look interesting more promising a brass horn so that must mean we've got a record player somewhere
11:49right let's have a look at you then i think i'm creating more mess as i go here
11:56some people would say that you get the best sound from a record so there are purists who want to
12:04buy
12:04all the old records and also what i love about it is if you think of something that's been recorded
12:09in
12:09the i don't know 1930s 1940s and you just hear it and you hear the crackle and there's such a
12:16difference
12:17in sound do you know what i'm going to see if robin can turn his fair hand to this just
12:22give it a spruce
12:23up and give it a new lease of life really because wouldn't it be fabulous to get this working and
12:28then
12:28someone can have it playing in their home again and another item out of storage would be music to
12:34johnny's ears hello hello i have a record player for you a gramophone yes thank you i have no idea
12:44if it's even working there's all the bits i believe inside that we're rattling about yeah you're probably
12:49going to say you absolutely can't that's better i can hear you now you're going to say that you
12:54probably can't but can you get some of the dings and dents out of the hall i can give it
12:58a try it's
12:59quite thin quite thin and tinny but i'll give it a try yeah see what i can do lovely thank
13:04you very
13:04much goodbye you're welcome come on robin there's no time to lose now the first thing that i'm tackling
13:11are these dents and creases in the brass work it's obviously been dropped or squished because it's lost
13:19its shape a little bit and as a result has lost much of its value it may even have happened
13:25in storage
13:26i think it's quite a nice collectible item and if it looked okay people might want to buy it and
13:33that's the thing isn't it that's what we're trying to do get things to auction get them sold
13:38that we are robin and you need to get the amplifying horn as smooth as possible to maximize the
13:44gramophone's value with izzy finding only bargain pieces in storage she's popped back to the flat to
13:52hunt down some pricier treasures we'll need them if johnny's going to get his hands on the bike and
13:58those tickets ah do you know what these are fab open it up and what you have here is essentially
14:07a
14:07drinks cabinet so here you would have all your glasses lined up and then in the center here in
14:15this instance we've got two bottles of fizz but it is reproduction there's no great age to this and
14:21it's very much of its time but it's a bit of fun and also it is in some ways a
14:27more compact
14:29piece of furniture than a big drinks cabinet just checking that it's in good condition which i think
14:36it might be looks good to me the globe drinks cabinet could serve up a tidy summit auction
14:42with an estimate of 60 to 80 pounds and now that robin has smoothed the dented gramophone horn he can
14:49turn his restoration skills to getting the intricate playing mechanism working again i think it's quite
14:56a nice collectible item it's clockwork so you wind it up and then hopefully turn it on and it'll play
15:04at
15:04constant speed doesn't sound the best sounds a bit bumpy to me can you hear that
15:13that's not conducive for good record playing it certainly isn't so what's the plan to make it saleable
15:22what i can initially deduce is that the speed adjustment is really worn out so the next thing
15:30i'm going to do is just go through and clean all of these cogs because it could just be that
15:35there's
15:35a a little bit of muck or grime on some of these cogs and that may well be what is
15:42causing the jumping
15:44let's get in there give it a clean you need to be very careful here robin the tiny gears are
15:50delicate
15:51original and functional one wrong move and the sound and value could be ruined gently does it
15:58you can see there's already a lot of muck and dust coming off starting to feel a lot smoother it's
16:04that bumpiness that we want to get rid of though i think that is coming from the muckle bit of
16:09grime on
16:09some of the cogs if robin can't get the gramophone to play the sale price will decrease time for the
16:17moment
16:17of truth sounds pretty good what about if we now add the amplifier
16:38so is great excellent result robin you've increased its value and it could now go for as much as 50
16:49pounds while robin hunts for his next fixer-upper back at the flat izzy and donna are hoping to spot
16:55more auction goodies so donna big question does the lamp work it does yes well yeah so he's got a
17:04stage light that's been converted into a lamp yeah so in the early 20th century britain were one of the
17:09main manufacturers of stage lights although this one is later than that but nowadays people do like
17:15to have them in their homes exactly like johnny has where it's been converted into a lamp that you can
17:19just have as a table lamp this is a strand theater spotlight born from a london firm in 1914 it
17:28helped
17:28to revolutionize stage lighting shaping the look of modern theater which still resonates today
17:35where do you think the joy for him comes is it from owning the items or finding them finding them
17:42i think yeah and owning them he enjoys them for a bit and then he wants to move on well
17:46that's quite
17:47nice because i think of my job as being a custodian of an item when it passes through my hands
17:51so i
17:52suppose johnny's the same he's just a temporary custodian and then you know sells it on and buys something
17:58new yeah so 250 pounds is that what he paid for that yes that's what he paid for that one
18:04he'll have
18:04bought that from an antique shop won't he unfortunately he also paid above the current
18:09auction value as izzy estimates it may attract bids of between 70 to 100 pounds but johnny wants to
18:16create space so let's push on and izzy's diving into the bedroom the evil dead a classic 1980s horror film
18:27there is a growing market for videotapes for the science fiction genres and the horror genres
18:33and particularly those that come in what we call the clamshell case gosh doesn't that take you back
18:38seeing a video but actually nowadays at auction they do sell labels to look out for palace video
18:45that's one of them which we've got here so this is ticking lots of boxes for me i'm going to
18:50be
18:50really conservative because it is just one video on its own and say 10 to 20 pounds however would not
18:56surprise me if it sells for more of that a killer fight cult legend collides with vhs nostalgia there's
19:04potential for sparking a bidding frenzy now what else can we find in here
19:12there's a pile of toys on the desk here quite a nice corgi aston martin but the vehicle i'm really
19:20interested in is the batmobile to a toy collector there are really only two brands that's corgi and
19:29dinky and it looks like you've got both of those here and we have batman seated inside but we're
19:34missing his sidekick robin that's like me being sat there without my pal robin next to me and we
19:40haven't got the missiles either i mean it is in play warm condition but it's not bad i mean it's
19:47a good
19:48item revered for their obsessive detail corgi's palm-sized batmobile is sought after by both serious
19:56collectors and nostalgic buyers when it comes to toys there are a number of things you look for condition
20:04and having the original box so we've got a tick for that
20:08the batmobile will be included in a mixed lot of retro toys and could fetch as much as 150 pounds
20:15great work izzy has also uncovered a diecast model of a fireball xl5
20:23and there's a model of a starsky and hutch ford grand torino
20:28the old school toys will join the globe drinks cabinet the strand theater spotlight and the evil dead vhs
20:38more hunting also uncovers a stick stand nice stick stand 10 to 20 pounds and a candelabra
20:46large candelabra also going into the catalogue are the storage unit finds an oak lectern and a milk churn
20:56and not forgetting the restored gramophone and the grandfather clock under repair
21:03which at the storage unit is exactly what robin is turning his attention back to as the woodworm
21:09treatment has had time to work it's left a bit of residue so i'm going to just wipe it off
21:15the damp
21:16sponge because i want to give it a bit of finish before it goes to the auction house with a
21:20bit of
21:20wax just a little wax polish look really really nice but first robin needs to remove all trace of the
21:27treatment from the surface i need to dry it off pretty quick before it soaks in and lifts the
21:33veneer off the wood oh you've got a visitor robin hi hello how are you good how are you all
21:38right so
21:39this is quite a piece that i'm working on here in one of the two storage containers there was originally
21:45five there was yes he's got it down to two now so he's doing well is he a bit of
21:49an impulse buyer
21:50there's something that he wants he make sure he gets it man after me own art yeah well i better
21:54get
21:55this finished up nice to see you thank you bye there's no time for chit chat there's work to do
22:01that grandfather clock is still far from auction ready i love wax as a finish on wooden products
22:09it's because it makes it look really really good the case is looking great there robin but the clock
22:15mechanism and weights still need your attention you'd better get a wriggle on if the grandfather clock
22:21is going to be ready in time izzy is making her way through johnny's crowded one bed flat and is
22:28starting to wonder what fuels his purchases all right why is there a tuber in johnny's bedroom
22:38it's one of the more unusual items i've come across in people's bedrooms before johnny is he you've got a
22:43lot of unusual items in your bedroom including this tuber well i was going to use it you see upside
22:51down on a tuber stand put some flowers in it nice decorative that sounds nice it does doesn't it when
22:56i go into a shop i don't know what i want i look for the most quirky bizarre off the
23:02wall sort of thing
23:02and then buy it what are you thinking i mean we i can sell it i would go quite low
23:08because it is dented
23:09and it hasn't got its mouthpiece um 20 to 30 pounds at auction it might do more if two people
23:16see it
23:16for the potential it has i'd sort of like keep it would you i think so i think i'll keep
23:22it you'll
23:22keep it yeah i know i'm gonna blow a duff note on it one day okay so i'm keeping it
23:27here but thank you
23:28anyway you're very welcome well spotted getting johnny to part with items for his bike and ticket fund may
23:34be tougher than we thought so we need to redouble our efforts better keep searching izzy and while
23:41the wax dries on the clock robin's back at the flat looking for another project oh look at you gosh
23:49you
23:50don't see these that often
23:53a few dings to it but it's not too bad hello hello what have you got here i've got a
24:00diver's helmet for
24:01you robin be worth good money that diving helmets like this were introduced in the 1820s when the
24:08dean brothers adapted their patented smoke helmet it paved the way for modern diving suits and nowadays
24:15they're a big hit with props buyers and interior designers oh a bit filthy as well yeah so i'll take
24:22this over to the van and give a little once over right i'll go and sort it out see you
24:28later right
24:30let's get a move on weather's a bit miserable okay i brought this quirky umbrella
24:42now the storage unit beckons where robin's ready to make a splash with the divers helmet
24:48i'm going to give it a good old cleanup just to make that copper shine take all this
24:53verdigris off and the oxidization and give it clean so it's just lifted a little bit
24:59verdigris is the natural green blue tarnish that forms on copper after long exposure to air moisture
25:05and pollutants i don't want to make it look like it's brand new it's not what i'm trying to do
25:11trying to preserve it by taking off the worst of it with this much verdigris and very little time
25:19robin's going back to basics the cleaning up metal is a specific metal polish it cleans it and it polishes
25:27it great well no time like the present robin now before i use this polish always put gloves on it's
25:37not
25:37the best stuff to get on your skin so some disposable gloves always the first thing to go on
25:44while the diver's helmet looks sturdy and robust copper can be easily scratched so you need to be
25:50gentle here robin so got some really bad verdigris there what i want to try and do is just get
25:58that
25:59off this sensitive process of restoring the copper's luster will also slow down the return of the verdigris
26:07you can see already that the copper is starting to lose its tarnish and the green is starting to turn
26:12back into copper color now it does take that off really well but to do a really good job and
26:18to get
26:19it right back i expect it's going to take me quite some time robin's got a lot of work to
26:25do if he
26:26wants to drum up attention with plenty of bidders
26:34present to you laurel and hardy in the form of a salt and pepper just oh
26:41very apt for the legends of slapstick i should know better than that
26:48than to tip up and salt and pepper oh dear mr laurel himself came from ulverston which is right over
26:56there anyway you know they're modern they're novelty they're 10 pounds but i was gonna say
27:03if johnny doesn't use them i'm happy to sell them but oh oh no there's pepper in there as well
27:08okay
27:08they're both full the table is now seasoned it certainly is and a great fun find
27:17i just hope that robin is having better luck with that copper diving helmet
27:23all verdigris gone left a lot of the nice patina that is a really nice diving helmet now ready for
27:32auction what a transformation the divers helmet could now fetch as much as 150
27:38pounds even johnny is making progress letting go he's summoned izzy to the storage unit is it i've
27:46got something to show you close your eyes
27:50tra la oh that's a nice easel isn't it it's not bad where did you get it from johnny easy
27:58i got this
27:58from an antique shop right and how much was the easel how much do you think i think you paid
28:03too much i
28:03reckon you paid 100 quid here 150 spot on because i can tell this has really scarred you you've had
28:11it in here covered up well i can sell it but it is going to be at a more modest
28:16value i suggest as a
28:18guide that we say 30 to 50 pounds it's going to auction it's going to auction it's going to auction
28:24well done johnny we're making progress old artists easels are coveted for their sturdy build by collectors
28:32so this could prove popular and as the wax is now dry and ready to touch the grandfather clock awaits
28:41the
28:41final stage placing in carefully the clock mechanism and the weights the trick here is lining up these
28:49little hammers with the chimes because they'll all go at different times they need to be in exactly
28:55the right place otherwise they won't hit the chimes so i get right underneath now we should be able to
29:06pull the weights up ah and now what happens is as the clock ticks these weights pull down it's a
29:14mechanism
29:15that slows the weights down so they don't just drop to the floor and that mechanism will
29:18tick back and forth and you can hear the the tick tocking now i think this is probably the pendulum
29:25we try and get that on at the back so we've got to test the chimes push the hand up
29:31to one o'clock
29:32there should be a little click and there you go tick tock clock's working chimes are banging it's all waxed
29:45up the woodworms treated i'd say about as good as it's going to get and it's ready for auction
29:54brilliant work robin you've increased the clock's saleability and raised its value
29:58it could fetch as much as 50 pounds and with the day coming to an end izzy is on the
30:05hunt for some
30:06last-minute finds
30:11this is a lot lighter than i was expecting it's a ship's lantern oh oh everything's opening up
30:19so ship's lanterns they go back centuries but when you see the port and starboard lanterns
30:26you have a red light for port and a green light for starboard and it's used to signal direction
30:32the red and green light is a convention that began in the 19th century to allow ships to judge a
30:38vessel's
30:38direction and right of way at night they are popular people like to have them if they've got a home
30:45bar
30:45or if they've got an area that they sort of collect quirky things in and sort of have it all
30:51staged out
