00:01Peggy 18
00:04I've spent my life taking orders
00:07Now it's my turn to decide
00:13My name is David Cage
00:14I'm the writer and director of Detroit
00:17It's been just over an hour since a little girl was taken hostage
00:20on the top floor of a building here in downtown Detroit
00:23So Detroit is a neo-noir thriller
00:25set in the near future in the city of Detroit
00:27and in this world technology made possible the creation of androids
00:31that loop speak move exactly like human beings
00:34and they have replaced humans in most of their jobs
00:38Well the existence of androids creates a very ambiguous situation
00:42and relationship with humans
00:43because at the same time humans become very dependent on these androids
00:48because they do all types of jobs in society
00:50there are workers, there are nurses, there are teachers
00:53so we really need them to do these jobs
00:55but at the same time there is a very high level of unemployment
00:58but androids are absolutely not considered in this society
01:02there are just machines, there are just objects
01:04and they are treated as such
01:05and when the story starts
01:07some of these androids start to have strange behaviors
01:09they start to disappear without any reason
01:12or even start being aggressive towards humans
01:15it's as if they were overwhelmed with their own emotions
01:20don't come any closer or I'll jump
01:22in Detroit we play more than one character
01:25so we introduce the character of Kara at Paris Games Week
01:28who is a playable character
01:29and here at E3 we wanted to come with a playable scene
01:33just to show how the game plays
01:35and we introduce another character
01:37his name is Connor
01:38and Connor is a very advanced prototype of android
01:44he was designed to help human investigators
01:47working on cases involving deviant androids
01:50he can, you know, analyze a crime scene
01:52he can detect clues, he can recoup things
01:55he is equipped with ballistics
01:57you know, he can just detect a bullet
01:59and rebuild where it came from
02:02he is really cold, very smart, very clever
02:05and he is only driven by one thing
02:07it's accomplishing his mission at any price
02:10You lied to me, Connor
02:11all our characters are real people
02:14we do a casting session
02:16and we find the right actor for the role
02:19and then we scan his face in 3D
02:20scan his body, recreate his avatar
02:22get him on set in performance capture
02:25and record his performance
02:28we wanted to push the limits
02:31with Detroit and Avon Engine
02:33that would offer us some more features
02:36regarding cinematography in particular
02:38so we wanted to work on realistic lighting
02:41especially
02:41so we redeveloped entirely a new engine
02:44from scratch pretty much
02:45we also worked on physical cameras
02:48having virtual cameras
02:50that work pretty much the same way
02:52than real cameras
02:53we worked on skin shaders
02:54we worked on air shaders
02:56eyes shaders
02:57we worked on translucency
02:58which allows you to
03:00when you have a strong light behind your ear
03:02see that your ear becomes red
03:04we play with all these technologies
03:06and players don't need to care about all this
03:08because it's just interesting for geeks and developers
03:11but actually we really enjoy doing these things
03:14and we hope that players
03:15even if they are not interested in technology
03:17behind all this
03:18will like the result on screen
03:21well the script of Detroit
03:23it's thousands and thousands of pages
03:25and it's really a complex script in many ways
03:28from the very first scene
03:29very first second of the game
03:32you start to see things having consequences
03:34in the scene and maybe beyond the scene
03:36and of course as you move on in the story
03:39it becomes more and more complex
03:41we tell different individual stories
03:43from different androids
03:44and they start as separate stories
03:47but of course there will be a point
03:48where they will connect and interlace
03:49and tell you the big story
03:52and it makes things even more complex
03:54for me as a writer
03:55but hopefully more exciting also
03:57for the player in the end
03:58My name is Karl
04:01This is our story
04:14PS4 for the players
