00:04Welcome to another developer update. My name is Jeff. I'm one of the developers on the Overwatch team.
00:10This update is going to be very cool because it is a topic a lot of you have been asking
00:15about for months.
00:16And we're really excited to address what's going on.
00:20So coming to the PTR very soon are going to be the much awaited Symmetra changes.
00:26So I wanted to spend a little bit of time and kind of go through the changes and why we
00:31made them.
00:32So obviously the problem we were seeing with Symmetra before, and we've talked about this a little bit before,
00:38was that she was a very effective character, but she was viewed as overly situational.
00:44And what I mean by that is players enjoyed playing her, but usually they would play her in a situation
00:49where maybe they were on defense on the first point.
00:52For example, in King's Row, they'd play her on the first point.
00:56She seems super useful when you get the teleporter up, keep it protected, and get your team back to the
01:02fight really quickly.
01:03But what we found is, if a team failed on that first point, a lot of players would either switch
01:09off of Symmetra
01:10or stay on Symmetra and not be as effective, because in essence her entire ultimate ability was not useful on
01:17later points.
01:18Even though sometimes players would put up that teleporter on the final point of like a Temple of Anubis or
01:24even a King's Row,
01:25it really wasn't helping as much as it helped earlier in the match.
01:29So that is one of the things that we wanted to address, and we also wanted to address some quality
01:34of life issues.
01:36A lot of times we got feedback about the initial setup with Symmetra and how that felt as a Symmetra
01:42player,
01:42that sort of panicked rush that you would make to put shields on everybody and then run to the front
01:48line
01:48and get your turrets going to try to build ultimate as fast as you could, but then you were waiting
01:53on cooldowns a lot,
01:54and it was kind of frustrating. And there was a weird time efficiency element to it that wasn't ultimately fun,
02:01but just more stress inducing and put a lot of pressure on you.
02:05So to get into some of the changes we're making with Symmetra, let's start with her ultimate,
02:10because that's probably the most exciting.
02:12So Symmetra is going to be the first character in Overwatch to actually have a choice of ultimates.
02:19She will have two ultimates available to her at all times in the match.
02:24So what will happen is she'll start with no ultimate in terms of her ult meter will be at zero,
02:31just like other heroes doing damage and over time the ult meter will increase.
02:36When your ult is available to you, your ultimate will light up and at first you will see the teleporter
02:42there.
02:43So just like Symmetra played previous to this, you can put the teleporter down,
02:48it works just the same as it did before, you have six charges, your teammates can come through.
02:52But what is very exciting is you can also toggle by pressing your ultimate ability again to a shield generator.
03:03So the shield generator is a built object just like the teleporter,
03:07but it puts a very substantial shield, more than her old shields, on all of her teammates in a very
03:16big radius
03:17and it ignores line of sight. So that means Symmetra can actually hide the shield generator somewhere.
03:23It's applying shields to everybody and the other team really needs to go find that
03:28before they can take out that shield generator or take out those shields.
03:32So she now has two buildable objects for her ultimate, a choice of a teleporter or a choice of a
03:39shield generator.
03:40The other thing we did was look at her teleporter and we gave it more health and we made some
03:47of the health shield health instead,
03:50which means that it regenerates. So a problem before was as a Symmetra you defend either your teleporter
03:57or in the new scenario you'll also defend your shield generator and it would take some damage
04:02and there was no recourse, you couldn't undo that at all. So even though we always intended Symmetra to sort
04:09of build the nest
04:10and protect what she had built, it wasn't realistic because sometimes it would just get taken out
04:15even if you had successfully taken out the person who was attacking it. So it has more health now
04:20and more of that health is in shield so it will regenerate over time, meaning the enemy team has to
04:25make a more concerted effort
04:27to go after your ultimate that you've built. So you might be asking, you know, with the shield generation
04:32generator what happened to the shields? So we felt that the shields were never a really highly interactive,
04:39fun sort of element to playing Symmetra. At times it felt more like a chore or almost like a plate
04:46spinning,
04:47but not in a great way. So instead we've replaced it with a completely new ability. It's called Photon Barrier
04:55and what this is is very similar to maybe Reinhardt's shield or Winston's projected barrier that he creates.
05:04It's a barrier that Symmetra has, but what's cool about hers is that it's actually projected on a track of
05:13movement.
05:14So it's sort of elliptical in shape and she sends it out and it just moves along a trajectory.
05:21So it's really effective, like if you're sort of hanging behind your team and they don't have somebody like a
05:27Reinhardt,
05:28maybe they have a Roadhog and a Zarya as their tanks up front, you can send this projected barrier out
05:34in front of you
05:34and it sort of signals your whole team to come with it and follow with it, but it's got way
05:40more uses than that.
05:41Symmetra can use it for her own devices as well, protecting her nests or using it to be very aggressive.
05:47So we think the Photon Barrier will be a really fun active addition to Symmetra's toolkit that puts more skill
05:55in playing the hero
05:57and then also just a lot more creativity in how you play her. So we think you'll enjoy that.
06:02The other thing we've done is we've made some minor tweaks to her turrets themselves, the little sentry turrets that
06:09she placed out.
06:10Previously, she could always have 6 out in the map, but previously you could only stock up to 3, place
06:18those and then you'd have to wait for the cooldown to regenerate.
06:21We've changed that maximum to 6, so when the match starts, for example, or when setup starts, Symmetra can run
06:28out and instantly place 6 of her turrets in a location that she wants.
06:33And then they're still on cooldown after that to come back, but at a slightly different rate, it's now increased,
06:41it's 10 seconds where it was 12 seconds before.
06:44What this means for Symmetra players is, one, the initial setup in the map is much more like you want
06:50it to be.
06:51You can kind of pick your area, set up exactly how you want at the start of a match.
06:56The other area that really is a game changer for this is it allows Symmetra to sort of move her
07:02location with the flow of combat much easier.
07:05You know, you might be defending a choke early in the match and then decide that you want to drop
07:10back and quickly put a bunch of turrets up on a capture point or maybe around the payload.
07:15And now you have a lot more tools at your disposal to make that type of move really quickly.
07:21So we think that should be a lot of fun.
07:24We made some minor tweaks to her weapon. For the most part, her weapon works exactly the same as it
07:29did before.
07:30Both the primary and secondary fire are exactly the same as they were.
07:35With a slight change to the primary fire, we've extended the distance of the beam at which it locks on.
07:41So Symmetra can actually make contact with targets slightly further out.
07:46It's not much more, you know, don't panic. She's not, you know, a long range beam sniper now or anything
07:52like that.
07:52She's still a very short range character with that primary fire.
07:57But just for quality of life, we gave it a little bit more distance so that should feel better as
08:02well.
08:03So all of these changes are coming very soon to the PTR.
08:08So we want your feedback. We want you to play with it.
08:11And we'd really love to hear both from the Symmetra players who play a lot of Symmetra.
08:16We want to hear, you know, how does this feel to you?
08:19But we're also really curious to hear from the non-Symmetra players.
08:23You know, maybe you didn't play her before because she wasn't fun.
08:26Or, you know, the skill cap wasn't where you wanted it to be.
08:30Or, you know, some other quality of life reason.
08:34You know, is Symmetra better for you now as well?
08:37So we'd love to hear all your thoughts on Symmetra.
08:41We'll be taking a very close look at the statistics, seeing, you know, what's her win rate like?
08:46Are people switching off of her on the second point?
08:49Is she effective on attack now?
08:52Is she effective in control maps like Nepal, Ilios, Lijiang?
08:57We're really looking at Symmetra overall and holistically.
09:01We want her to be a less situational character and a character that sees a lot more use.
09:07So we hope you have fun with her.
09:09We've had her in internal testing for quite some time now.
09:13And she feels very powerful to us.
09:15So we'll see how she feels to you guys.
09:17We always get a much better sense from you guys.
09:20We're a very small group who's testing internally.
09:22So we get a much better idea from you guys.
09:26So that's the big update.
09:28There's a couple other things I wanted to make you aware of.
09:31Oasis, the new map that we mentioned at BlizzCon,
09:34which is a control map again like, you know, Lijiang, Nepal, Ilios.
09:40Oasis is coming to the PTR very soon, very shortly after Symmetra.
09:46We'll get Oasis on there for testing.
09:48Our goal again is to put Oasis live to the service to everybody in early 2017.
09:56But we'd like to get as much testing, you know, at the end of 2016 as possible on the map.
10:01We think it's a lot of fun.
10:02One thing in particular that we're keeping an eye on is that jump pad.
10:07We want to see all the creative uses you guys can come up with it.
10:10And if that's a mechanic that's really fun and we refine it along with you guys,
10:15maybe that's something we do more of in future iterations of either Overwatch maps
10:20or future Overwatch heroes.
10:22So keep an eye out for Oasis.
10:24And then one final small feature that I'll mention to you guys,
10:27and I'm not sure which iteration of the PTR it will hit on,
10:31but keep an eye out for it.
10:33We've added a small social feature at the end of a match when the match ends
10:39and you're looking at some of the statistics and the end of round flow
10:43where you see the cards, the statistics, the play of the game.
10:47We've added a small button on the screen that just says stay with group or I want to party up
10:54now.
10:55And basically what we've added this for is those times where you've been really successful with the team,
11:01but you guys aren't friends, you're not on each other's friends list,
11:04but you're like, wow, we had a lot of great chemistry.
11:07It sure would be awesome if we could kind of keep this group together.
11:11And if you all click on that button or even some of you click on that button,
11:15it will automatically form a party for you guys and then you can keep playing together.
11:20So that's just one of the small social features.
11:23We're going to keep making ones like that to really encourage people to group up, hang out, play more,
11:28hopefully make friends, find those people with similar play styles to you that you enjoy playing with
11:34because we think it really enhances the experience.
11:37That's all we have for today.
11:39We're super excited to see what you guys do with the new Symmetra
11:43and eventually how you guys play the new map, Oasis.
11:47As always, we're looking forward to your feedback.
11:50You guys really are the ones steering the direction of this game.
11:53We hope you enjoy and have a great time with it. We'll see you later.
12:05We'll see you later.
