00:07I'm very excited to be here with an awesome developer update
00:11because we are introducing the 24th hero to Overwatch today.
00:16So we're here to talk about Arisa.
00:20Arisa is a brand new character.
00:23A lot of you probably haven't heard of her before,
00:26but she has a really cool backstory.
00:28So we want to talk a little bit about that
00:30and introduce you to how Arisa came to be.
00:33So I'm going to back way up to the Omnic Crisis,
00:37which, as many of you know,
00:38was this terrible world war that happened
00:41where robots sort of took over the world,
00:45humans fought back,
00:46Overwatch was a big part of that.
00:48We eventually struck peace with the Omnics,
00:50but during that Omnic Crisis
00:52there were many different Omnic units used in the battles.
00:56So, as you know,
00:59Bastion, as an example,
01:00was one of those units that was used in the battle.
01:03Well, there was another unit called the OR-14,
01:07which was specifically a unit designed to fight against the humans
01:10and be part of the Omnic Crisis.
01:13Well, fast forward many years later after the Omnic Crisis,
01:18peace has been struck.
01:20We're in the city of Numbani
01:22where humans and Omnics get along great.
01:25It's actually one of the most technologically advanced
01:27and peaceful cities on the planet.
01:30But they start to run into some strife from a local villain
01:34who you might have heard of before.
01:36His name is Doomfist.
01:38And in order to start to guard against Doomfist's attack
01:43and protect the city against any other dangers that might come about,
01:48the citizens of Numbani developed a more advanced version
01:53of the old OR-14 unit,
01:56which they not surprisingly called the OR-15.
01:59So, it was one version higher.
02:01Well, the OR-15s initially were okay and suited for battle,
02:07but they eventually lost horrifically against Doomfist,
02:11specifically in a battle that took place in the Numbani airport.
02:15And most of the citizens of Numbani just gave up on the OR-15,
02:20said, you know, they failed miserably.
02:22They're laying in pieces scattered throughout the airport terminal.
02:26This is no good.
02:27You know, we give up on these things.
02:29Well, there was a young girl who didn't give up hope.
02:33Her name was Efi.
02:34She was an extremely smart girl, excellent at science,
02:38robotics, mathematics, programming.
02:41She still had hope.
02:42She still believed in what these OR-15 units were supposed to do for her city.
02:48So, she sort of, as a scrappy young girl,
02:52took the pieces back to her workshop,
02:55worked on this unit,
02:57and created the evolution to what the OR-14 and 15s were,
03:02and named it ERISA.
03:04And she made a single, heroic unit
03:06that wasn't supposed to be part of a huge battalion,
03:09but was supposed to be a specific individual hero,
03:13and named it Orisa.
03:15So, Orisa, in terms of the timeline of Overwatch,
03:19is a brand new hero just on the scene.
03:22So, we have yet to see what Orisa is really going to do.
03:25So, that's part of what's very exciting.
03:27Most of our heroes have a big historical background.
03:30We've seen them succeed and fail in their past histories,
03:35where Orisa is new on the scene,
03:38and it is Efi who has created her,
03:41who is really encouraging her to become a new hero of the future.
03:45Now, let's talk about, mechanically,
03:48what Orisa does and what she brings to the game,
03:51and why we designed Orisa the way we did.
03:54So, let's talk about her abilities first.
03:58First of all, she's a tank.
04:00So, she will be in the tank role.
04:03Her primary weapon is called the Fusion Driver.
04:07Think of it as a projectile-based machine gun.
04:10She moves a little bit more slowly when she's shooting it,
04:14but it has a good range to it.
04:15Probably more range than almost any of our tanks have on their weapons.
04:20Maybe Zarya's alternate fire goes, you know, equally far.
04:24But, she's got a good range on it,
04:26good rate of fire,
04:28really high sustain weapon with a large clip size.
04:31So, that's the Fusion Driver.
04:33The alternate fire ability on the Fusion Driver is of extreme utility.
04:39So, it sends out basically a pulse.
04:43Think of Zarya's Graviton charge, which is Zarya's ultimate.
04:47But, it sends out a single pulse out from her.
04:51And then, you can click your alternate fire again,
04:56and it will bring any affected targets within its radius
05:00for a very short period of time.
05:02So, it's like a little mini Graviton surge that she can do more often.
05:07And, mostly she's using it for positioning or repositioning her targets.
05:12It also, you know, briefly puts them in place.
05:15So, if you have a teammate who's a Widowmaker, or a Hanzo,
05:20or even Orisa with her great range on her gun,
05:23can shoot towards that.
05:24And, it really helps you line up some critical shots that can happen.
05:28You can also pull people around corners with it.
05:30So, that's a really fun ability that she has.
05:33She also has a tank ability called Fortify.
05:38And, what Fortify does is it not only makes Orisa a little bit tougher,
05:45but it prevents Orisa from sustaining any sort of crowd control ability
05:51that might be used against her.
05:53So, like the most obvious examples are maybe Farrah's Concussive Blast,
05:57which normally knocks people around, you know, moves them out of position.
06:02If Orisa has Fortify on, and she's going over that bridge in the Gardens of Lijiang Tower,
06:08you can't knock her off at that point.
06:10She's in place.
06:12Plus, she doesn't take as much damage as well.
06:15So, Fortify is a very useful, very straightforward tank ability.
06:21Now, one of Orisa's most defining abilities is her protective barrier.
06:28The protective barrier is, you know, think along the lines of Reinhardt's barrier shield,
06:34or Winston's barrier bubble that he throws out.
06:38The protective barrier has quite a range to it.
06:41It's roughly the size and shape of about half of Winston's bubble.
06:46And, it goes out anywhere where she targets it.
06:49So, it could be in front of her.
06:52It could be slightly off to the side.
06:53She could use it in close on herself, or she could use it, you know,
06:57further in front of her to shield an ally.
07:01And, it creates a barrier that has the normal amount of damage it can take,
07:07like other barriers in the game.
07:08You can destroy it.
07:10Things that go through barriers like Symmetra's Alternate Fire will go through this.
07:14So, it's got a lot of utility to it, and a lot of use, and a lot of protectiveness.
07:21And, lastly, there's her ultimate ability, which is her supercharger.
07:25So, she wears this drum-like item on her back.
07:29When her ultimate's up, she can take it off her back, throw it down on the ground,
07:33and it's effectively damage boosting anybody who's in line of sight of the supercharger.
07:41Now, the thing about the supercharger is, is that the enemy team can kill the supercharger.
07:48So, you really need to make sure to protect your supercharger either with your protective barrier,
07:53or maybe you want to put the supercharger, you know, just off to the side,
07:58out of line of sight of your enemies, but in line of sight of your teammates.
08:02So, there's some gameplay there to figuring out where the supercharger is,
08:06because if the enemy team kills it right away, then your team loses all of that benefit.
08:11Now, with ERISA, I really want to talk about why are we adding another tank,
08:16because I know that topic will come up, and a lot of people are sort of wondering, you know,
08:20how do we pick what heroes come next? And there's a lot of reasons for that,
08:25but primarily with ERISA, we were looking at our tank lineup,
08:30and, you know, we have heroes like D.Va and Winston, who are much more disruptive in terms of tanking.
08:37They're much more defined by their mobility, they like to get in, they like to get out,
08:43they don't stay in one place for too long, they cause a lot of disruption and harassment.
08:48You've got somebody like Roadhog, who, he's all about punishing people who are out of position,
08:57and positioning himself to punish people who are out of position.
09:00So, you know, he plays a very different sort of role.
09:03But we were spending a lot of time looking at Reinhardt and saying,
09:06what really defines Reinhardt, and why is he so important and critical to Overwatch?
09:12And we started to describe Reinhardt, the term that we would use on the development team was,
09:17we'd call him an anchor tank. And what we mean by that is that Reinhardt almost anchors the entire team.
09:23The team, with a properly positioned Reinhardt, the team builds and positions around Reinhardt.
09:31because he doesn't have a lot of mobility abilities, and because he has that protective barrier in front of him,
09:39you sort of know where to position yourself and when the team is going to engage or disengage,
09:45based upon what Reinhardt is doing.
09:47So we like this idea of what we kept calling an anchor tank.
09:50And we felt like players needed more options in that sort of anchor tank role.
09:56We wanted another tank that teams could build around and position around.
10:02And even though we think that tanks like Winston and D.Va are really great in what they bring to
10:07the game,
10:07they're not necessarily bringing what Reinhardt was bringing.
10:10So we hope that in Orisa, there is now another option to a low mobility tank,
10:19but one that brings a high amount of protection in her protective barrier,
10:24where you kind of see her on the battlefield and go,
10:26okay, we're approaching from this angle, I will get behind Orisa, I'll follow Orisa,
10:32she'll put the barrier up, we'll follow her in and we'll engage in that regard.
10:37So we know that there are concerns about barriers in the game.
10:42We've actually, you know, we've been working on Bastion,
10:44retuning him to be more effective against barriers.
10:47We do have some very effective heroes against barriers right now.
10:51For example, Symmetra with her alternate fire goes directly through them.
10:56Obviously Reinhardt's fire strike goes through barriers as well.
11:00Junkrat's grenades do tremendous damage to barriers and will melt them very quickly.
11:04And if barriers become too much of a thing,
11:08we're looking at those in terms of balance and how to adjust accordingly.
11:12Most of all, we just wanted to bring a new and exciting hero to Overwatch.
11:17Not only does she fill a role that we felt was very needed,
11:20not just a tank, but one of these anchor tanks that you really build a team around.
11:25We also felt like Orisa was visually challenging.
11:29We often hear that, you know, when it comes to female characters,
11:34they tend to be more limited in their size and appearance,
11:39where the male characters get these really like big and challenging visual designs
11:44that are very exciting.
11:45And we've heard a lot of desire to have a very visually challenging female character.
11:51So that was fun for us to explore as well.
11:55So we really wanted to bring that to Overwatch.
11:57And most of all, we wanted to bring a really cool hero
12:01with a lot of backstory that really rounded out our current cast.
12:06That is not only these old school heroes who took part in the old Overwatch and Talon
12:11and omnic battles of the past, but really brought something new
12:16and gave us some new hope to look forward to what are the heroes of the future going to bring
12:21to Overwatch.
12:22So we're really looking forward to all the feedback we're going to get on Orisa.
12:27We're going to keep working on her until she's just right and just perfect.
12:31We hope you enjoy her, and thank you very much. We'll see you soon.
12:44Thank you.
