00:01That's Doomfist's gauntlet!
00:03From the very moment we announced Overwatch, Doomfist was part of the story.
00:08Oh man, they said he could level a skyscraper.
00:12It immediately raised questions in everybody's mind.
00:15Who is this Doomfist guy?
00:27Doomfist is the rare example where he is a character that came simply from a name.
00:31Chris Metzen one day came up and was like,
00:33okay, we need a bunch of villain names and here's one, Doomfist,
00:37and we all were super excited about it.
00:39The name was just used in that first movie without really completely understanding who the hero even was.
00:45So we had created the initial sketch of Doomfist.
00:48It was kind of rough, just the front three-quarter view, and we were like,
00:52yeah, that's cool, you know what, one day we're gonna make Doomfist, that's awesome.
00:56He ultimately turned into probably one of our most evocative heroes.
01:00It is good to be back.
01:04With a guy like Doomfist, like when you see the concept and the name,
01:07you have certain expectations for what he's gonna do.
01:10We wanna make sure most of the time he's punching people,
01:12and when he punches people, you feel it.
01:14So Doomfist at his core is really a love letter to the fighting game genre.
01:19Just like everybody else of my generation, I grew up on arcades,
01:23and that was really one of the most important things about this character,
01:26is like hearkening back to that old fighting game side view, brawler feel.
01:31So every single time we took a look at Doomfist, we said,
01:33what should Doomfist look like when doing this ability?
01:36How does it feel impactful? How does it feel powerful?
01:39How does it feel calculated? How does it feel confident?
01:41He has such a powerful design.
01:43We thought that that was a way that we could get more into his character
01:46and really show what he's all about.
01:48We really wanted to give him colors that made him feel very powerful,
01:51like red, gold, and really adorn him with that regal presence.
01:55Another challenge was just making sure that the gauntlet
01:59would look as badass as possible from every angle.
02:01We wanted this pneumatic impact-driven fist
02:04that really felt like it had physical power
02:06rather than some kind of like magical energy.
02:08Once I could see their ideas there, I could push my animation further
02:13so everything feels strong and visceral.
02:15He also has a lot of cybernetics throughout his body.
02:18And his whole arm has been augmented with cybernetics
02:21to kind of receive the gauntlet.
02:23It was also a really nice element for us
02:25to make him look even more menacing than what we had planned.
02:28Everything that the sound guys did, the VFX artists and the animators,
02:33they really sell that impact.
02:35And the first time you hold down that right click
02:37and you just square somebody in the face and they bounce off the wall,
02:41you're like, oh man, this is my character.
02:43I am not your savior.
02:45With Doomfist, we really wanted to capture
02:48a lot of different aspects of his personality.
02:50Doomfist, in his own mind, is not a villain.
02:53Doomfist cares about perpetuating strength and honor.
02:58Other people, of course, around him,
03:01see him as an absolute terror and a villain.
03:04Humanity is forged in battle.
03:06To evolve, we must be tested.
03:09He's obviously this powerful guy and he just radiates strength
03:12and he will take care of business himself
03:14and he will do it fast and there will not be a mistake.
03:16Every move he does is a calculated move.
03:19And that kind of goes into his gameplay.
03:22All of his abilities work together in a variety of different ways
03:25and people can build combos based on the situation for gameplay.
03:30There's a lot with Doomfist that was hard to get right.
03:33It's hard in a first-person shooter game
03:35to have a character do a lot of melee abilities
03:39and have that feel really good.
03:41Anybody that plays Doomfist will understand that,
03:43hey, my job is to punch people, right?
03:45But more skilled players will be able to look at him
03:47on a much more strategic level.
03:49Does he drop in to try and destroy a healer?
03:51Does he engage with a super punch to knock Reinhardt out of the way?
03:55Does he use his ultimate ability
03:56to reposition himself on the battlefield?
03:59That kind of flexibility enables so many options for him.
04:01The people who really like to get aggressive
04:03and in people's faces and get in there
04:05are really going to love this character.
04:06If there is one thing about Doomfist
04:08is that when you play him, you feel powerful.
04:09It's a little evil, but it's fun to hear the frustration
04:13of the other players as you're pummeling them,
04:16and maybe that sort of fits with who Doomfist is.
04:20We never expected that just a fist in a cinematic
04:23would get the outcry for a hero that Doomfist got.
04:27We think he's awesome, we think he's powerful,
04:29and we just hope he's the Doomfist
04:32that you guys were looking forward to.
04:34Now that Doomfist is here, he has a plan,
04:37and he's going to execute it,
04:39and the heroes of Overwatch better be ready.
