00:00Hello ladies and gentlemen and welcome back to another episode of Item Highlegs, I mean Highlights.
00:06This show is all about going in depth on what each item in Paladins does, how it affects your games,
00:12when you should buy them and more importantly, when you shouldn't.
00:15Today it's time to talk about one of the more traditional and impactful items in the game, Haven.
00:21Now Haven is an item that gives you percentage damage mitigation, meaning that a percentage of the damage an enemy
00:26does to you will be mitigated or stopped by Haven.
00:29Allowing you to take less damage overall. Pretty straightforward, right?
00:33Well, here's where things get a bit trickier. As with every item in Paladins, when you take something away, you
00:39give something up.
00:40Paladins is a game about choices and though buying Haven will mitigate a percentage of damage done to you, it
00:45will only mitigate direct damage and not AoE.
00:49Let's delve deeper. Damage in Paladins is categorized into two types, direct and AoE.
00:55Direct damage is a type of damage that can only be done to a single enemy at one time.
01:00Think of Cassie's arrows or Victor's assault rifle bullets. Those won't be hitting two or three people at once. They'll
01:06only hit a singular target.
01:08AoE damage, the second type, is a category that applies to damage that can be dealt to multiple enemies at
01:14the same time.
01:15For example, Eevee's ice staff or Jogos' rocket launcher weapons. If a group of enemies clumps up together, the ground
01:21explosions from those weapons could easily hit all three of them at once.
01:25This type of damage would not be mitigated by Haven and would require the item Blast Shields.
01:30Where this can get tricky is understanding that many abilities or Ultimates on Champions, whose normal weapons are mitigated by
01:37Haven, actually are considered AoE damage and are not countered by Haven at all.
01:41A good example is Victor, whose assault rifle is mitigated by Haven, but his grenade skill and barrage ultimate are
01:48considered an AoE type damage and only mitigated by the item Blast Shields.
01:52So, pick your poison.
01:53Alright, so maybe you don't know which ability is mitigated by what, but here's an easy way to tell in
01:59-game.
02:00Ask yourself this question. Can this skill, or weapon, when shot once, damage more than one person at the same
02:06time?
02:07If so, then it's an AoE damage type and mitigated by Blast Shields. If not, then it's mitigated by Haven.
02:13So, when to pick up Haven?
02:15A safe bet is always to attempt to mitigate the champion's main and consistent source of damage, meaning Haven would
02:21be a better pickup against the Victor than Blast Shields.
02:23Since you'll most typically be damaged by his assault rifle over the course of a match.
02:27Once you are aware of this fact, however, you could easily make a call as to whether you find his
02:32ultimate or grenades to be more of an issue.
02:34If there's an Eevee and a Drogos on the enemy team as well, that may shift your favor towards Blast
02:39Shields to counter more of their overall team damage.
02:43Here's a list of who I recommend, for the most part, buying Haven against and who not to buy it
02:48against.
02:52Remember, when buying items, you should take into account their entire team composition, as well as your specific matchup.
02:58If I'm Knessa and I see a Sky and Androxus on the enemy team, I'm going to immediately look towards
03:03Haven, since they're directly looking to attack me.
03:06If I have no natural predators in my match, I'll base my decision on their roster as a whole.
03:10If you can mitigate 4-5 members on the enemy team's damage with 1 item, that's usually a good sign
03:16that it's valuable.
