00:00Hey y'all, welcome back to the third day of Nintendo Treehouse Live here at E3 in Los Angeles.
00:07I have with me my man Corey and two researchers from the mysterious Squid Research Labs.
00:14They're going to talk about some of their new findings as they pertain to the single-player campaign in Splatoon
00:202.
00:21And with that, boys, please, take it away.
00:28So I'm going to pick up the controller and start playing right away.
00:44So this is the new hub, Inkopolis Square.
00:50And today we're going to be looking at the single-player offering we have here.
00:55And we're going to enter that through this manhole cover right here in the corner of the square.
01:11So people who remember the first Splatoon game may remember that Captain Cuttlefish was your guide throughout the single-player
01:17mode.
01:18And this time we have Marie here who's going to offer some assistance.
01:26I'm just going to get right into things here.
01:38So the single-player mode, you know, as you know, is a game all about taking out different stages here
01:48in the Octarian homeworld.
02:01And this is a great mode for learning the basics, all about controlling your inkling and learning those types of
02:08skills that you can take into modes like Salmon Run that we showed you earlier.
02:20And they're all about the different ways your weapons will shoot ink and learn basics like, oh, I really shouldn't
02:25walk through the enemy ink.
02:29Oh, and here's an Octarian enemy.
02:38And the single-player of Splatoon 2 as well, you'll be facing off, like I mentioned, against the Octarian army.
02:53These particular weapons I'm using are, you know, special to the single-player mode, but I'm using the hero Splattershot
03:00right now.
03:06And I'm going to be breaking crates as I go along to try and pick up some power rakes as
03:11a bonus.
03:13Spot an enemy and you're a little bit scared, hang out behind a wall, gather your breath, and jump out
03:18and attack.
03:24This teaches you that you can use the sort of features around you as necessary to do battles.
03:30So hiding behind obstacles, something you'll use in multiplayer as well.
03:36And as long as you're in your ink there, the enemies can't see you.
03:40So you can either hide behind something or you can hide in the ink itself.
03:55Well, in this time around, if you take enough damage, you're not going to, you know, get splattered right away,
04:00but your armor will disappear and you still get to keep proceeding.
04:05And if you wait long enough, that'll get restored on its own for you.
04:08And if you're in your ink, you'll be able to get your armor back by spending time submerged in your
04:12own ink.
04:12And it's also possible to get that armor back by spending time submerged in your own ink.
04:16So let's take a look at this stage.

04:25I think that's enough research we've done on our first stage.
04:28And now we'd like to show you one thing we've learned recently, which is that different weapons are available for
04:34you to use in all these different stages.

05:02Now we've discovered as I've arrived in this new area here that each time you go through a stage
05:09for the first time you need to use a weapon that's assigned to you, but after that you'll get various
05:14requests from Sheldon
05:16and you'll become able to use a variety of different weapons like you see here on those stages.
05:21When you clear that stage, you can get the hero's weapon from the base,
05:27not just, you can get it, but you can get it.
05:29You can get it, and you can get it, and you can get it, and you can get it.
05:36And so Sheldon is doing some research of his own
05:38and trying to develop these hero versions of the various weapon categories.
05:42And so after clearing a stage for the first time,
05:45he'll give you, or I should rather say loan you, one of his precious newly developed weapons.
05:53There's no way Sheldon's given those up for free yet.

06:06He loves him too much.
06:14As you may know, the roller is very well suited to getting lots of ink out quickly.
06:23So you can do those short flings, or just roll it along whatever turf you're proceeding on.
06:31It's a relatively short range weapon, but super effective.
06:37So this is something we've discovered recently in our research.
06:41Rollonium, a new object that the Octarians appear to have placed in their world.
06:51Unfortunately, they weren't expecting we'd be able to use it to beat that.
06:59And it also seems that the roller has had a new action added to it, in which you can do
07:09a jump attack, and then it will allow you to do a vertical strike that allows you to fling ink
07:15in a much more long range straight line pass.
07:24But if you get your ink just right, you can even take out two enemies at once.
07:37Always remember, it's important to recover your ink from time to time.
07:44So this is a gusher that we saw in the previous game.
07:50Yes, he will get a little bit closer to the damage, so I'll use the axe and kill it.
07:57These particular enemies are dangerous if you let them get up close as they'll blow up on you, but if
08:01you use that long range vertical strike with the roller I mentioned, you can take them out from afar.
08:19I love the way the ink looks now in this single player campaign. It has kind of these little reflective
08:24bits. I don't know if they're weird calcium deposits or what happens, you know, what the ink is made of.
08:30I don't know if it's what the ink is made of, but I don't know if it's what it's made
08:35of, but it's pretty cool.
08:38Yes, I'm just researching it.
08:40We're still doing research on what those little glittery bits are exactly. We'll get back to you on that.

08:49And like last time, if you pick up that additional armor, you'll be ready to take on the threat even
08:54more.
09:01You can also get the angle just right when hitting these Rollonium and send them flying up into the air
09:08like that.
09:09Use them to take out those enemies that are hanging out up in the air.

10:23These are objects you see floating. If you shoot them with a shot from your charger, they'll pull you right
10:29to where they are.
10:37So these large, uh, missile-like Australian creatures, I suppose we should call them, have a weak point in the
10:44tentacle that is protruding from the boat.

14:51so I'd like to sort of try mixing up the weapons one more time to show you what I was
14:55talking about
15:02so we're going to head back to that first stage we checked out
15:04this time take it on with a slosher weapon
15:08and every stage is completable with every type of weapon
15:11you just have to get creative sometimes
15:25yeah
15:31like you said it's totally fine to kind of take on whatever stage with whatever weapon you prefer once you've
15:36cleared it that first time
15:37and you know there may be players who even want to clear all stages with all weapons as a type
15:41of challenge
15:55so you know the slosher is another weapon great for just getting huge amounts of ink out
15:59but it doesn't have a lot of rapid fire
16:01but it really does a lot of damage
16:05yeah shooter may have taken a couple of hits to actually get the guy
16:08but that's a one shot if you can actually hit him
16:20the slosher gives you the ability to attack with ink by dropping it from above due to the arc of
16:25its shot
16:34so that enemy you know has a shield but we were able to get ink over the shield and rain
16:38it down on him from above
16:43and this type of action I'm doing here is just really in the slosher's wheelhouse
16:53so even when you have things like crates that are stacked up together you can take them out all at
16:57once
17:05you know you may find at times when you're playing these stages with new weapons that your hands get kind
17:12of sweaty
17:12and you start to shake the curve but it's ok
17:14you can see it was much easier to get rid of all those crates when you're using a slosher
17:27and so that adds a sort of another area sort of layer of enjoyment that we've found
17:36you know taking out these different stages with different weapons allows you to play through them in different ways
17:40and that discovering that is fun
17:42let's look at the power-up of the weapons
17:45well next we'd like to show you some of the research we've done on how to power up the weapons
17:49available to you
17:51the weapons are a little weak, but you can use the Ikra and Iriconium to power up the weapons
17:59so your weapons start out you know not very powered up they're a bit on the weaker side
18:03but in using the power eggs and the Sardinium that we showed you earlier you can power them up
18:08you can see all the weapons we have there written below we're on level 1
18:28so we can see we need two Sardinium and 800 power eggs to power up our uh let's see that's
18:34the hero shooter
18:36thank you
18:39so you've been doing your weapon research
18:45so you can just kind of test out on these uh dummies over here the rapid fire ability
18:50how much damage the weapons do
18:52then we're gonna upgrade to level 2
19:00you can see that rapid fire and uh damage is upped
19:06and the hero shooter can be powered up to level 3
19:13and the hero shooter can be powered up to level 3
19:22and so you can also power up things like your ink tank
19:26now you also will start out with these flat bombs but you'll also you know unlock things like the curling
19:30bombs and this auto bomb here
19:32you can unlock those using the same sort of upgrade ability

20:07and you'll find the uh stages easier to clear that way
20:15so we'd like to check out uh another new weapon

20:50now the splatling also uses a sort of charge feature

21:36And you know, learning how the different stage features work like that is an important way of completing them with
21:42confidence.
21:52Now the splatling is strong enough to take out the shielded enemy from the front. You can get rid of
21:57his shield, but it does take a lot of aim.
22:02Yeah, the splatling really packs a punch, so where other weapons may not have that firepower necessary, the splatling gets
22:08the job done.
22:16Oh, it's fun to shoot.
22:18Yes, the splatling is strong, so it's fun to shoot.
22:23Oh, that's a TACO sniper.
22:25Alright, let's see, there's an Octo sniper up ahead.
22:36These guys can really deal a lot of damage from a long ways off, so we need to use walls,
22:41our own ink, make sure we can get close to them.
22:51The splatling is a weapon, I think, that has maybe a bit more of a learning curve than some of
22:57the other weapons, but hero mode, being able to use it in hero mode, pardon me, single player mode, is
23:02a great way to learn the tricks that'll be necessary to use it effectively in multiplayer.
23:10Yeah, that's one beautiful thing about the single player campaign, is it acts almost as a tutorial, it's obviously super
23:16fun, there's like an awesome story, but if you play through that single player mode, you're gonna be, you know,
23:21a better multiplayer player for it too.
23:23Yeah, that's quite happy.
23:25Yeah, hero mode's deep.
23:26Especially the history story and fun.
23:30Yes, you've got to tackle that in the form of the player.

27:15I think for our last feature here we would like to show off one of the boss fights.
27:43The stages are split up into five different areas, and each one of those has a boss waiting for you
