00:00Hello, everyone. Welcome back to Treehouse Live, here at E3 2017.
00:04I'm Matthew, joined here again by Rich from Treehouse,
00:07and we have two special guests today,
00:09Mr. Takahashi from Monolith Soft
00:11and Mr. Yokota from Nintendo in Japan.
00:15Today, Raymond's going to be interpreting for us,
00:18and we're here to play Xenoblade Chronicles 2.
00:22Sorry about that. Set us up here, Rich. What are we looking at?
00:25Cool. So if you've watched the trailer,
00:27you already got a bit of a taste of what the world
00:29and the story looks like.
00:30So we're going to kind of go a little bit deeper into the combat system
00:33and talk about what makes Xenoblade Chronicles 2 special.
00:36Right now, we're looking at...
00:37I am going to do a little bit of story stuff, I have to admit.
00:40And I'm going to have Mr. Takahashi do some explanations
00:44of the world as we're playing.
00:45But before we do this, I want to get into a bit of the combat
00:48so that you can get a sense of what's happening.
00:51Just, you know, as I'm playing and as we're talking.
00:54Right now, we're looking at the two sort of protagonists.
00:57We're looking at Rex on the right and Pyra on the left.
01:00It might look like I've got two people in my party right now,
01:03but when I get into combat in just a moment, you will see...
01:05Let's take a look at them real quick.
01:08There's Rex. There's Pyra. Hi, guys.
01:11So once we get into combat, you'll see it's really only Rex
01:14who's doing the fighting.
01:16Rex is what's called the driver.
01:18And then Pyra is his blade.
01:20The blade imbues a character with a weapon,
01:24with an ability to fight functionally.
01:27So you can see that he pulls out the Aegis blade,
01:31and there I'm going to try to get a better camera angle on them.
01:34You can see Pyra is sort of powering him or charging him up.
01:38What this allows me to do is on the right-hand side,
01:40you'll see the new Arts palette.
01:42People who've played the Xenoblade Chronicles series
01:44will remember the Arts palette from previous games.
01:47It's been streamlined significantly now,
01:49so it's just using the four buttons
01:51on the right-hand side of the Joy-Con controller.
01:55As with the previous Xenoblade Chronicles games,
01:58attacks are automatic.
01:59And with every attack, you'll see I'm building up my Arts.
02:02You can see around the little diamond,
02:05I'm kind of building up my attack power.
02:07I now have all of them fully charged,
02:09and I can trigger an attack.
02:11I'm going to launch my anchor shot to pull some HP out.
02:14Because honestly, this first battle that I'm doing right here,
02:17is a little bit on the tough side with just one person here.
02:20So I need to pull as much HP as I can.
02:23You'll notice my double spinning edge has a side attack bonus.
02:27I'm going to try to get around and demonstrate.
02:29There, you see that little halo?
02:31Indicates that I was able to get around and pull off the side attack.
02:34It's going to be hard to get a back attack on him.
02:36Oh, he didn't turn around. No, that didn't pull off.
02:39But every time I'm doing these attacks, as I'm doing my Arts,
02:42or as I'm doing my basic attacks, I'm sorry.
02:44I'm charging my Arts.
02:46And then as I'm doing my Arts,
02:47I'm charging up my Blade's ability to attack using her power.
02:52That's the right hand icon on my Arts palette right there.
02:55You just saw it went to level one,
02:57and I've got this Flame ability.
02:59Pull back and you can see Pyra is charging me up,
03:02and I just blasted him, and now he's on fire.
03:06He'll be dead in just a moment,
03:08so we'll do some more combat stuff after that.
03:11Now, right now I'm just showing you what the absolute basics are about,
03:16so that I can start layering some additional complexity on.
03:19You know, it's a very deep RPG,
03:21and I want you guys to be able to understand what I'm talking about here.
03:25As I'm going into this next battle, though,
03:28I wanted to ask Takashi-san a question.
03:31The first time I heard the name of this game, Xenoblade Chronicles 2,
03:34my first question was why is this Xenoblade Chronicles 2
03:38and not a follow-up to Xenoblade Chronicles X
03:40or some other suffix?
03:44I heard the title of Xenoblade 2,
03:48but I thought, why is it the title of Xenoblade 2?
03:52Is it not the title of Xenoblade X?
04:05I thought it was not the title of Xenoblade 2,
04:08but the title of Xenoblade 2 is not the title of Xenoblade.
04:13So, you know, when we were developing Xenoblade Chronicles X,
04:21È veramente game-driven
04:23through exploration
04:24in an open world.
04:26And with Xenoblade Chronicles
04:28it was really story-driven,
04:29and this time we wanted to create a story-driven
04:32narrative in the game,
04:33and so we opted to go with Xenoblade Chronicles 2.

04:39That answers a lot of questions
04:40because we do have a very strong character
04:43focus in this game, and we'll be showcasing
04:44a few more of the characters who make up your party
04:46in a minute.
04:48I do want to point out, by the way,
04:49that where we are in development right now
04:51there's still a lot of polish that's going on,
04:53so the graphics look really great
04:55already. You can see off in the distance.
04:58We'll talk a bit about the world,
04:59but you can see how much
05:01I have to explore before this demo
05:03is over right now.
05:05But in the months that we have left in development
05:07we're going to see a lot of polish going on.
05:09So bear that in mind as we're playing.
05:12Right now I'm looking out
05:13across this field, and up here
05:15you see the head of the titan
05:17on whose back we're riding.
05:19Over here you can see the cloud sea.
05:22I want to point out that
05:23one thing that makes this game very different
05:25from other games is all of the land masses
05:27are really titans.
05:30You're walking on the backs of these gigantic monsters.
05:32This is the only place you live.
05:34You fly around on airships,
05:36or you ride on the backs of titans,
05:38but there's no land mass.
05:40Other than perhaps you might be able to see
05:42a hint of the world tree that was mentioned
05:44in the trailer there.
05:45But we'll be getting into that a little bit later on.
05:49Now, Matt, you had a question
05:50about this, an observation that you'd made
05:51when we were talking.
05:52Yeah, right, so of course you see the verticality there,
05:55and you just mentioned that these are titans
05:57that we're exploring right now.
05:59And in the original Xenoblade Chronicles game,
06:02we had two bodies of land,
06:04Bionis and Mechonis,
06:05and that kind of set up
06:07how you explored that game,
06:09and it really kind of drew out the story as well.
06:12I was wondering for Xenoblade Chronicles 2,
06:15how did you go about building this world,
06:17and how do the titans play into it?
06:29Xenoblade 1では鬼神と巨神というところでストーリーが繰り広げられたと思うんですが今回はどういった形でこの巨神獣というのはストーリーに関わってくるのでしょうか?
06:58そうですね。今回はかなり今までよりもかなりストーリーの根幹に関わってくる存在としてこのアルスという生物がいます。今ここにいる生物はキリンのような四つ足で歩いているやつなんですけれどもそれ以外にも人形であったりクジラみたいなやつであったりいろんな形のアルスが存在しています。それぞれがここは今大自然の景観が多いところなんですけれども雪原であったりとか
07:09海洋的なものである海みたいなものであったりとかそういった様々な景観を今回はいろんなアルスに散りばめてそれぞれ探索して遊んでもらえるような作りになっています。

13:41Evolution's been very good to them.
13:44So now I've got, let's see, Tora's drawing aggro.
13:48Nia is a healer, and so she's doing her healing attacks.
13:52She's actually pulling HP for me.
13:53Oh, there's a break.
13:54I'm not going to charge up Fudor in time
13:56to take advantage of that break.
13:58Although if there's a topple, I may have a chance.
14:01I don't think we're going to get a topple off of that.
14:04Now, one thing I didn't get a chance to talk about before,
14:07that I, oh, oh, he's been launched.
14:08Someone else launched him.
14:09This is, oh, the launch was, it's passed.
14:14I was going to show off another of the abilities,
14:16but we'll get another opportunity in a second,
14:19because I wanted to talk about the blade abilities right now.
14:23that Nia's using one of her blade abilities, Poison,
14:26and you can, or actually it was Toxin,
14:29and now she's poisoned this Buffalo.
14:32Bulu, bu, bu, lufo, you do it.
14:35You do it.
14:36Thank you.
14:37Who I think is new to this,
14:38but many people may have seen that.
14:40There's a lot of classic enemies
14:41from the original game, too, like Bunnett's.
14:44Balufo.
14:45Balufo?
14:46I don't know.
14:47Balufo.
14:48I'm going to go with that for now.
14:51But we'll keep attacking
14:54these gentle creatures of the night
14:57and see what attacks we can trigger.
14:59One thing I'm kind of holding off on for now is
15:02I don't necessarily want to go into the main field,
15:05because there are going to be some things that will kill me,
15:08and I'll show you getting killed inevitably.
15:10It's just going to happen.
15:11Right.
15:13Another thing I want to talk about is
15:14my basic attacks will trigger automatically, of course,
15:17but unlike in previous games,
15:19if I'm moving, they're not going to trigger.
15:20So I have to stop and think about where I want to be
15:24in order to do my basic attacks.
15:27Something else about that is
15:28you don't want to move around all the time, either,
15:30because each automatic attack is a little bit different.
15:33You have three steps to that, right?
15:34One, two, three.
15:37So you can see that the basic attack is a combo.
15:39And as I'm building up my arts,
15:41I can also trigger...
15:43You see that little blue ring
15:45was me triggering an art off of my basic attack
15:48that helps me charge up a little bit faster
15:51and may do a little bit more damage.
15:52I got it again right there.
15:54So even though some of the battle may feel very automatic,
15:57there are a lot of real-time actions that you're taking
15:59in order to build up your arts
16:01and to build up your blade abilities as well.
16:03I have my flame ability ready right now,
16:06and I might as well finish him off with it.
16:08Oh, he's already down.
16:10I'm sorry, Pyro. That was wasted.
16:12Looks like you got somebody else.
16:13Oh, no, I got somebody else.
16:16Sorry, you're just collateral damage, pal.
16:18And now you're gone.
16:21I'm going to move into some more challenging enemies.
16:24The Oasis, where all of the gentle creatures
16:26come for a nice sip of water,
16:28is maybe not the nicest place I could be.
16:31So I'm going to run past a little bit more.
16:35There was something else you had...
16:37Yeah, sure. While you're running around here,
16:39let me ask Takashi-san.
16:42In a lot of your games,
16:44you prefix the titles with Xeno.
16:46I was wondering, just in general,
16:48what does the word Xeno mean to you?

17:30really means like something different
17:31or something kind of
17:32not familiar
17:35and I think in life
17:37when we're living
17:38you know there's
17:38you meet different people
17:39and they have different personalities
17:41different backgrounds
17:42and it's the drama between
17:44the interaction between those people
17:47that create the drama of life
17:48and I thought that it would be great
17:50if I can drop that drama into video games
17:53and that's why I add Xeno
17:55to a lot of my games.
17:56All right. Awesome. Thank you very much.
17:59Now I went over and attacked this
18:02much more ferocious series of Ferris's
18:07and they're pack animals
18:09so they started calling in their buddies
18:11and so this battle is going on
18:12a lot longer now.
18:14Do a little area of effect attack
18:17see if I can
18:19is anyone going to be able to topple him though?
18:21That's the real question I have
18:22because I want to hang out here
18:23and see if I can pull a topple combo out of this.
18:26Oops. I did that a little bit early
18:28but it was still all right.
18:30Now I've triggered the chill effect.
18:34You can see the chill bars
18:37slowly trickling down.
18:39If I were to pull off another
18:40oh down he goes
18:41if I had time to pull off another
18:43blade art
18:44you would get a chance to see
18:45one of those blade combos.
18:47We will have an opportunity
18:48to demonstrate that
18:48as we get deeper
18:49into this level
18:51but for right now
18:53you look big.
18:55Oh yeah.
18:55And you're angry.
18:56Oh good.
18:57I don't feel so bad
18:58attacking aggressive animals.
18:59One thing I want to point out
19:01that's really interesting
19:02about this take
19:03on the Xenoblade
19:04the familiar elements
19:06of Xenoblade
19:08in the previous game
19:09for example
19:09you had the ability
19:10to identify
19:11how aggressive an enemy was
19:13and how they would spot you.
19:14You could see the little eye
19:15to indicate that they had
19:16a visual range
19:17or you would see
19:19whether they were
19:19detecting you by sound
19:22and as I mentioned
19:23more importantly
19:23you could tell
19:24if they were aggressive enough
19:25to attack you on sight.
19:27You don't have that
19:28in this game
19:29and it's because
19:31you're intended now
19:32to learn more
19:33about the enemies.
19:34Oh topple topple topple
19:35do a punch punch.
19:36Oh too slow.
19:38All right buddy.
19:40There we go.
19:42We'll see if we can do it.
19:44I didn't get a chance
19:44to switch over
19:45to Food or in Time
19:46to take advantage
19:46of that topple.
19:49But this time around
19:50you're meant to study
19:51the animals.
19:52You're meant to study
19:52their behaviors
19:53and learn
19:53through your experiences.
19:55You might die along the way.
19:56I certainly will.
19:57but I'll just use
20:00this ability.
20:02Just keep firing off abilities
20:04to charge up my specials.
20:06But you'll learn
20:07their behaviors
20:08and you'll learn
20:08how to fight them
20:09through experience
20:12and through repeated death
20:13over and over again.
20:16I'm going to trigger
20:17Tora's shard ability now.
20:20You can see it charging
20:21through his support
20:24and doing serious knockback.
20:27Shard is still in play.
20:28If I were to trigger
20:29with a complementary ability
20:31again I would be able
20:32to chain off of that.
20:34Now in order to demonstrate
20:35some of that
20:35I am going to start
20:36I'll grab some HP.
20:37I already healed up.
20:38But in order to demonstrate
20:40that I'm going to have to
20:40head in the direction
20:41of town
20:43so I can show you
20:44it's not just fighting.
20:46There's a fairly sizable town
20:48on the back
20:48of this titan.
20:52Now one thing
20:53that we talked about earlier
20:54is the way in which
20:56the setting shapes
20:57the lives of the people
20:59in this world.
21:01In this town
21:02I wanted to ask
21:03Takashi-san
21:04about the people
21:05Oh, that's big.
21:07That's a tough enemy.
21:08Let's just show you
21:10what that looks like
21:10because
21:13I didn't even get
21:14my sword out in time.
21:16That's another one hit.
21:17He is very territorial.
21:19I've got my party bar
21:21charged up a little bit
21:22so I can bring Tora back.
21:23Oh, just in time to die.
21:25Now as I mentioned before
21:26when you die
21:28did I mention this?
21:29Who knows.
21:30We'll review it on playback.
21:32When you die
21:33you are set back
21:34to your latest checkpoint.
21:35You don't really lose
21:36anything in the process
21:36so it's educational.
21:39I just had a very
21:39educational death
21:40right there.
21:42But I had a question
21:43for Takashi-san
21:44about the lives
21:45of the people
21:46who live on the backs
21:47of these Titans
21:47in all of these
21:49different environments
21:49that form up the
21:52world of Xenoblade Chronicles 2.
21:55I want to talk
21:55about the people
21:55in the world
21:56who live on the backs
22:02of these Titans
22:03in all of these
22:03the world
22:07of Xenoblade Chronicles 2.
22:10of Xenoblade Chronicles 2.
22:12in all of these
22:14in the world of Xenoblade Chronicles 2.
22:16of Xenoblade Chronicles 2.
22:21of Xenoblade Chronicles 3.
22:27of Xenoblade Chronicles 3.
22:47of Xenoblade Chronicles 3.
23:02So as you see here, this Titan's called Galmoth, and it's the giraffe-like Titan. And as you see, there's
23:09a lot of lush greenery and nature. So lumber is a very booming industry in this world. And so once
23:18you go into town, you'll see that there's a lot of lush greenery and nature.
23:21humanoid characters, people that live there and they make a living out of doing woodcraft.
23:28And, but if you go to say a different Titan, there are other ones that are more militaristic
23:33in nature. And each Titan has a different set of species that live there and have a different
23:39lifestyle that they live based off. And this world is created with a lot of diversity in
23:44terms of Titans and the species and the lifestyles that everybody has.
23:49is, you can see there's a bit of a lumber storage yard here.
23:57The massive toppled trees here. One other thing I want to point out, you've probably already noticed there's a day
24:04-night cycle in the game. We're just fighting our way through a really rough evening.
24:08So there is a day-night cycle, there are weather cycles. But because we're in this sea of clouds, basically,
24:15this sea also has a tide and the clouds will rise and fall.
24:19and ebb and flow with the passage of time. And that rising and falling will obscure or give you access
24:26to different areas within the world.
24:29So there are places that you'll be able to get to when the tides are low that you can't access
24:33when the tides are high.
24:35It's another way in which the world itself is informing the design of the game and the look and feel
24:39of this world.
24:41Another thing that I really liked about the very first game is when it went through those day and night
24:45cycles, it kind of had the same theme music, but it changed a little bit.
24:49depending on when it was. And that's back for this game and I'm really glad because I love the music
24:53in these games.
24:54So we're going to take a quick walk through this town, just so that you can get a sense of
24:59the scope of the world, the number of activities there are in each place.
25:03And also, I want to show you something over here. Again, this is very much a story of Rex and
25:10Pyra and his allies, very specifically.
25:13And at this point, we are...
25:16There we are. We're wanted men.
25:19We've got mug shots. I don't know where they got those mug shots.
25:23And we've got another driver right here who's studying them. He hasn't noticed us yet.
25:30No, not yet.
25:31But why give him a chance?
25:32We noticed him.
25:33Oh, it's you. Hey, wait, you're the guys from the pictures.
25:37And you'll notice he has his own blade there as well.
25:41And Tora's drawn his aggro, so he doesn't even notice me. Tora didn't even have his own mug shot up
25:46there yet, so he may not even understand what this battle's about.
25:50Don't turn around.
25:51There's no character that's fighting with him.
25:54There's a lot of characters that have come out, and they're so strong and unique drivers.
26:10And you'll find that there's a lot of unique and interesting characters in this world.
26:15And, for example, there's a really powerful driver in the blade that's locked up.
26:20And if you decide to challenge him, obviously, if you're able to defeat the character, then you get great items
26:25back.
26:26But, you know, a lot of the fun can come from discovering and getting to know these characters and battling
26:31with them as well.
26:32Now, one thing before I get too far into the city I wanted to show off.
26:35You don't have direct control over your other party members in a regular combat, but you can swap between them.
26:42So I just wanted to swap over to Nia, who's riding on the back of her blade.
26:46She's a very cat-themed character. You can see her ears.
26:52So you do have opportunities to swap between the different characters.
26:55And I'm going to get into a battle over here. I mentioned that she's a healer.
26:58I just want to show you what that looks like with her blade arts.
27:07Nia's got a special blade where she's actually able to ride him.
27:12And it looks great on the field as you're chasing, riding on blade back through the battlefield.
27:19So fight a few more rabbits, I think. Just to, you know, thin the population. They grow like rabbits.
27:26So you can see her arts are a little bit different. She's got a full heal art that's super useful.
27:33She also has an HP potion art. I'll kill some more rabbits. Why not?
27:39That potion art works really similar to Rex's art that we saw earlier.
27:43While the other healing art is more like a standard, what you would expect, like a healing.
27:46One other thing that she has, and I'll try to charge it up during this battle with this slightly tougher
27:51rabbit,
27:51is she can initiate the break status. So if I can trigger that break, maybe by building up my arts
28:01a little bit more.
28:02This rabbit might die before I get the break. But here, I'll trigger the ability.
28:06You'll at least see the break happen. And then you see once I've triggered break, another character might trigger topple.
28:12And then another trigger or character might trigger the launch status or other types of status.
28:17Right.
28:17So there's a lot of depth in choosing how you're going to attack and even choosing who your party lead
28:22is going to be.
28:23I do want to switch back to Rex, which means I'm going to be dependent on my allies to trigger
28:27those abilities for me.
28:29Let's swap blades on the battlefield back to Pyra.
28:34So I'm going to run back through that town, show you a little of the architecture, show you a little
28:37of the lives of the people.
28:40But then before I run out of time, I do want to take on the big bad at the end.
28:44So I can show off some of these more challenging moments.
28:48And I really, really want to demonstrate some of these combos I've been talking about.
28:52Because it would be a serious letdown if I tease it the whole way through and then don't actually show
28:57it.
28:58And there's a lot going on in this town. That's what I love about the towns in these games.
29:01It feels alive and there's a lot to do. There's a lot going on.
29:04Yeah, just the ambient chatter of people. You can stop and talk to some of the villagers.
29:11and build an understanding of the world that you're in.
29:15I'm going to run out here and just show off.
29:17I'm going to take a quick look at this warship over here.
29:20And so obviously, as we work more on the development, we'll obviously be fleshing out and expanding the town
29:26and all the activities you can do in these towns and cities.
29:29Oh, that's awesome. I'm looking forward to that.
29:30Here's another Titan here. I was actually worried that they constructed a warship into the body of this Titan.
29:38You're so worried.
29:39Well, it just seemed like he's got a lot of stuff on him.
29:42But Takahashi-san did reassure me that he is still alive and still functioning.
29:46Everybody feels better.
29:48I was legitimately worried about this. I'm sorry.
29:55Oh, that is an enormous windmill. Let's take a look at it.
29:58Where is that enormous? Oh, there it is. Way off in the distance.
30:02So we're going to run off. Before I get into this boss battle, though, there's a quick fight with some
30:07soldiers.
30:09Again, this is tied in very closely to the story line.
30:12The existence of this fort and the existence of these soldiers here.
30:16Takahashi-san, would you mind speaking about the soldiers that we're about to run across and their function here?

30:53So these soldiers here are actually imperial soldiers from a different Titan.

31:01And so the locals aren't really happy about that.
31:04And they're kind of in a position where they're kind of enemies of Rex and his party as well.
31:11And that's the kind of setup that we have going on here.
31:15We're making short work of them, though, with our party all together.

31:27Which is good, because with the time that we have left, that might be enough time to beat or be
31:32beaten by this upcoming enemy inside of the warship.

31:45And I also think one of the great features about this game is that even going into the airship is
31:50very seamless.
31:51There's no loading and transition.

31:56I mean, this cargo room that we're fighting in is tremendous.

32:22I'm going to talk through my strategy a little bit.
32:24I'm going to switch back to Pyra so that I can charge up my arts, pull some HP, and do
32:30some of the things that I'm more used to doing.
32:32This is sort of my standard starter strategy for building up my arts, building up my blades abilities especially.
32:42What I want to do here is get all of my characters' blades to have their abilities charge up to
32:49appropriate levels so that I can trigger the combos that I want.
32:52So I'm not going to use Flame or Toxin or Shard right now.
32:56I will attack once I get to level 3, I think.

33:08I want Rich to get this combo off, so I'll talk a little bit more about what we're trying to

33:25And the other one is the one that we previously touched on, the blade combo, which really makes these boss
33:30battles a lot of fun, and you have to think about your strategy a lot if you want to get
33:36them done either fast or even efficiently.

33:54And like you were saying, Matt, as you were saying, there's the blade combo and the arts combo.
34:00And arts combo usually is really physical and damaged, whereas blade combo has a little bit of a more attribute,
34:06elemental attribute to it that makes the gameplay a lot more, as you were saying, strategic and interesting.
34:11Yeah, you'll notice that Pyra is fire-themed, while Fudor here is water-themed, and Kirim, my newest...

34:53And to do that, I am gonna need to keep using my arts, even if they're not necessarily the most

35:11So, let's switch over to Pyra, who's ready, because I can pull off some more HP, get my arts going.
35:18I'm not gonna worry too much about trying to do the breaks and topples right now, because I really want
35:24to do race my way to the level three blade ability.
35:29And something that people can look forward to is the launch is not even the end of the combo.

35:35Yeah, it's just that's the end of what we have at our disposal right now.

36:31So, you can see the amount of strategy that you have to put into building up those combos.
36:35But when you do it, it's really satisfying.

36:38And having pulled off that combo, I might actually have a little bit more time than I'd expected on this.

36:44I can kind of chill out and relax and unwind.

36:53Pull some HP because we are actually starting to suffer just a little bit.
