Gameplay di Xenoblade Chronicles 2 mostrato alla Gamescom 2017.

00:00It's good to have you guys with us but it's also pretty good to have you guys with me so
00:05welcome to Chris from Nintendo of Europe as well as Filippo from Nintendo of Europe. Hello everyone. Hey guys are
00:12you excited? Yes very very very excited. Okay should we tell them what we are going to see right now?
00:18Yes. It's Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and I'm super super excited because I played Xenoblade Chronicles and I'm I can't wait
00:27anymore and I know that we are going to
00:29show something really really new. Yes exactly. So we are going to take you all into a completely new area
00:39called Uriah. Filippo can you just explain us how we got here? Yes so basically just before this bit of
00:47storyline we were swallowed by a gigantic titan. In the world of Xenoblade Chronicles 2 every living creature lives on
00:56top of these beasts that float on a sea of clouds.
00:59and normally you are on the back of the beasts outdoors. In this case we are inside this titan which
01:07looks very very unique I think. But I think we can dive into the gameplay straight away. Maybe introduce the
01:15characters and of course also the blades.
01:18Yes. So here we have Rex. This guy here who is our main protagonist of the story and his blade
01:26Pyra. Then we have on the left side of the screen we have Nia and her blade Dromark. And on
01:34the right hand side of the screen we have Tora the Nopon and his special blade puppy. And maybe that's
01:40directly something that we need to like explain a bit more.
01:43Because I guess there are a lot of Xenoblade Chronicles fans out there. But for everyone who doesn't know about
01:50the franchise yet. So tell us what is the connection between the driver and the blade.
01:55So we don't want to get too much into it. No I know. Because it's a very important part in
01:59the storyline. Of course. We don't want to spoil too much. But what we can say now is that each
02:04blade is sort of the personification of a weapon that the driver is using. So the Rex and Nia are
02:14drivers for example. And Pyra or Dromark are blades. Yeah.
02:19So these are as I said these physical representation of the weapon that the drivers are using. They are not
02:26human beings. They are different kind of creatures and the relationship between these two different species of beings plays a
02:31central role in the storyline. And that's what I wanted to hear. Thank you for that. Okay. So we are
02:36as I said here in Uriah you can see that we are inside. This is a closed space. You can
02:41see up there there are some openings. And when the sun will rise we will see light filtering through from
02:48those.
02:49Yeah. Yeah. And you can already hear from the music that it's a very different feel to what we showed
02:55during E3. Yes. Which was an open outside area. Really a big space that you could see around. And here
03:03it is very much an enclosed space. The music reflects it. The mood is a bit darker but it's very
03:10melancholous. Yeah. And this area just is so vastly different but also very very beautiful. Yes.
03:18Yes. So over the course of this hour of gameplay we are going to focus specifically on gameplay because the
03:25battle system has changed a lot compared to previous Xenoblade Chronicles games. It's much more streamlined. Everything is at the
03:31touch of a single button. Everything is either on the right or the left Joy-Con just one button away.
03:36But we have really a lot to go through. So I'll get right away into the battle.
03:40For this first battle I would ask the viewers to focus on the lower right corner of the UI. And
03:46here we see all of my abilities. One of which is already charged. The other two are not active.
03:52I will approach the enemy and I will start attacking automatically. And you will see that the arts will start
03:58charging every time I swing my sword.
04:00Go for it.
04:04Yeah. So at first sight there may not be so much change compared to how previous Xenoblade games worked. In
04:14the sense that you have an auto attack pattern.
04:16You can walk around to position yourself better for an enemy. And you can attack with the different arts of
04:23a character like what Filippo just described is shown in the bottom right corner.
04:29Exactly. So each time I auto attack you will see the white damage. And I attack in cycles of three.
04:36So Rex will swing his sword three times and doing an increased damage with each swing.
04:41If I press one of the buttons on the Joy-Con. So you see those three arts that I have
04:46on the lower right. Anchor shot, sword bash.
04:49Yeah. And double spinning edge.
04:50Exactly. They are simply the X, Y, and B button on my right Joy-Con. So I press and I
04:56execute my art. And you see that then on the right corner where the A button would be there is
05:03this Roman numeral one.
05:04And that's because auto attacks charge normal arts. And the normal arts that I'm using charge these special elemental arts.
05:12Which I'm actually going to show you now that this Piranhax aggro does.
05:17So actually it's been reset. So I'll just charge it up again and show it to you again.
05:22Yeah. So basically you're using the normal arts to charge up the elemental art like what it is now. And
05:27that's the heat that we're seeing.
05:29Exactly. So now I'm going to press the A button. And if you actually look at Rex and Pyra, look
05:34at where the sword goes when I'm pressing the A button now.
05:38So Pyra uses the sword. I press the B button in time. And I apply an elemental effect to this
05:44Piranhax. Actually his weakness is fire. We can see that we receive from Piranhax.
05:48Yeah.
05:49There is a fire icon on the right. That means that this enemy is weak to fire.
05:53Also, you will notice that when I'm moving, I am not attacking. This is unlike previous Xenoblade Chronicles games in
06:03which you would auto attack even when you were moving.
06:05This is because positioning plays a very big role in Xenoblade Chronicles 2.
06:12What I find interesting about this is that positioning has always played an important role in Xenoblade games because you
06:20have attacks like the sword bash that are stronger from the back or double spinning edge which is extra damage
06:26from the side.
06:27But in Xenoblade Chronicles 2, by having this system where when you move, you don't auto attack. And when you
06:35stand still, you do increasing damage during auto attacks.
06:39You constantly have to balance between being active or repositioning yourself to do more damage in the future.
06:45Yes. Also, the healing system has changed in the sense that Xenoblade Chronicles games were not always, I mean, the
06:54healing part was, they didn't want people to focus on the action.
06:57So the healing was always very particular, not the classic healing spell that you have in another RPG game.
07:02So in this game, you literally pull potions out of the enemy.
07:06So if I press the X button for the anchor shot, now, you will see potions literally flying out of
07:13the enemy.
07:14And Nia, who is right now more healing oriented, will automatically go and run to touch one of the potions
07:21if my characters are low on health.
07:23But I can do the same. I can just run and pick up the potion and heal my characters, but
07:27I will not attack in that moment.
07:30So this is a pattern that we start to see with many of the systems of Xenoblade Chronicles 2.
07:35There is always a cost. There is always a price to pay for everything you do.
07:40Yeah, but at the same time, what I think the game does very well is that it makes this trade
07:46-off very visual.
07:48When you walk, you see that your character is not attacking.
07:51When you attack, you see that your character is not walking.
07:54And in all the systems that we will show later, we see that same kind of trade-off and we
07:58see the same kind of visual explanation.
08:01Yes. That's very right.
08:03All right. So I'm just going to...
08:05Well, sorry. I need to collect loot. It's loot. I have to take it.
08:09Of course.
08:12So I think now we've explained a bit of the lower right part of the UI, as I was saying.
08:18Yeah.
08:19So the auto-attacks charge normal arts, normal arts charge elemental arts, which can be leveled up to level 4
08:25if I just don't press the button and just wait to keep charging them.
08:27Yeah. And you will see that it goes from Roman numeral 1 to up until 4.
08:32Yes.
08:32So it, again, is very easy to see at which level you are.
08:35Exactly.
08:36And now we focus on the lower left corner of the UI, where you see that I don't just have
08:41Pyra as blade for Rex.
08:43I also have Kaibyaku and Kizaragi.
08:46And you can see there are three blades, three different weapons, as you can see from the icon, sword, spear,
08:51and great axe, and three different elements, fire, wind, and ice.
08:55So you will see that as soon as I start attacking, the non-active blades will start charging up, and
09:01they just charge up over time.
09:02See the pink bar on the icon? I just need to wait long enough, and they will become active.
09:12And until that, Pyra, of course, is active.
09:15Yes.
09:15So you're still very much using one of your blades.
09:18Yes, exactly. And I am still, of course, performing my combos. By the way, if I press an art button
09:24just after an auto-attack, you will see this blue circle on the screen, right?
09:29So now, for example, this means that I comboed the art with the auto-attack, so the elemental bar will
09:36charge up faster.
09:37But anyway, back to the lower right. Now the other...
09:40The lower left.
09:41The lower left, sorry.
09:42The other, the other arts are active. The other, sorry, the other blades are active.
09:46So I just press, for example, right, on the left, right, on the left Joy-Con.
09:49Just show it on the Joy-Con, because what we can see is that both the bottom left and the
09:55bottom right corresponds to the buttons on the Joy-Con.
09:58That's why Filippo is also clearly playing with two separate Joy-Con.
10:03Exactly. So now I've changed to Kaibyaku, which is the element of wind with a spear.
10:10And you can see that as soon as I change, I will change now again to Kizaragi.
10:13If you look at the arts, they are all immediately active, and I can immediately execute my arts.
10:21Making combos with auto-attacks and arts changes based on the weapon you have, because they swing at a very
10:26different rhythm.
10:27So the Great Axe is very slow, so it will make very big damage, very big swings, but I have
10:34to change completely my timing.
10:36Let's go over this again.
10:38Yeah, shall we do one more just to recap it?
10:41Yeah.
10:42Oh.
10:42Because for everyone who played Xenoblade Chronicles before, this is so elegant, like you like to say.
10:49Well, yeah, what I would say is people familiar with Xenoblade games will remember that arts are something which was
10:58in those games.
10:59And it was always sort of a bar that you had to scroll through.
11:03So you were using your time in battle often to scroll between the arts that had already charged and that
11:09you could actively use, and then wait for others to charge again.
11:12So a lot of your attention was spent on managing the bar.
11:17Now, what you can see is that because the arts of a blade are corresponding to dedicated buttons, and then
11:25the blades are also corresponding to dedicated buttons,
11:27it means that you actually have three normal arts and an elemental art per blade, times three blades, means that
11:34you have nine arts plus three elemental arts just at the tip of your thumbs.
11:39Yeah.
11:40So it actually, on one hand, simplifies the system because you don't have to scroll through it anymore, but at
11:47the same time, it also gives you the time to really pay attention to what is happening in the battle
11:51instead of making sure that you select the right art, because those arts are already at your fingertips.
11:58And in that sense, it both simplifies it or streamlines it, but it also deepens the strategy because you have
12:05more time to think and to pay attention to the battles.
12:09That's true, and on top of that, yeah, it really feels like a dance, and I'm really always watching the
12:15characters fighting this time instead of watching for bars to load,
12:19because I can clearly see them lighting up, I don't need to focus my attention on them.
12:23I'm always, always focusing on the battle.
12:26I never have to look away from the action, basically.
12:28Okay. So, um, something else that I wanted to show you, uh, let's do just one last fight over here.
12:39Um...
12:42You might have seen already, while I was fighting before, there were, um, there was not only the, my face
12:50down there when the elemental icon was attacked with heat,
12:52but sometimes also the portraits of, uh, Nia and the portraits of Tora would appear on the left and the
12:58right, uh, side of the screen.
13:00This is because I not only can, um, command my character, Rex, to use an elemental art,
13:06but I can also command, uh, for example, uh, Tora to use stone, or, uh, Nia to use aqua,
13:12because, uh, their blades are, uh, water and stone, uh, elementals.
13:17So now I actually call for, uh, Tora, again, with one button, ZL, to use his art, and you see
13:23then Poppy takes the weapon,
13:24this giant drill shield, and pushes back the enemy.
13:27All right.
13:27That's hope.
13:28Oh, that was a good big number, actually.
13:30Yeah.
13:30Yes.
13:31I like big numbers in RPG games.
13:33Everybody likes big numbers in RPG games.
13:35Yeah, so what you can see now is all the way on the top, above Crabble, you can see stone.
13:40This is the element that was activated, um, by the elemental art.
13:45And you actually now did the follow-up.
13:47Yeah, I told Nia to use her elemental art, so she had already charged to level two,
13:53and, uh, after stone came Volcano, basically.
13:56Yeah, and this is what you can see in the top right corner of the screen,
13:59where there is sort of a path of elements shown from the moment that you activate your first elemental art.
14:06Uh, we'll go into more details later when we have a stronger enemy that we have a bit more time
14:11to explain it.
14:12But this was just a primer.
14:14Yes.
14:16So, uh, actually, let's go back down.
14:20Time for a bit of exploration?
14:21Yes.
14:21You need to show everything that is around.
14:23So, first of all, now it's, uh, five.
14:25It's already, uh, almost sundown, but you can see that those openings, uh, are letting much more light through.
14:31And, uh, so the look of Uriah will change over the course of the day.
14:36Something that, uh, that, uh, the development team, uh, told us as well is that their intention with, uh, I'll
14:41just run away.
14:42Uh, their intention with, uh, um, Uriah was also to make, uh, the, uh, this area a bit dungeon-like.
15:18Yeah.
15:20You really get a lot of this sort of misty feel that you're really inside this huge cave-like structure
15:27with things hanging from the ceiling with a lot of, um, sort of like autumn-like, um, foresty environments.
15:35And it's just, it's such a, uh, it's just a feeling of, you know, you get a bit, a bit
15:41silent.
15:42You just want to listen to the music.
15:44And it also gives you the feeling of being very, very small and complex to your surroundings.
15:49Yes.
15:49Yes.
15:50The sense of scale is always a big thing, knowing Xenoblade Chronicles games.
15:53Also, in the first one, you might remember, like, you're just walking on a plane, uh, attacking, like, uh, like,
15:58like a cow-like enemy.
16:00And then, all of a sudden, a gigantic thing comes in.
16:02Just look how the lighting is now changing.
16:04Because the sun is going down.
16:05Yeah, the sun is going down, so it's, uh, the light is changing from, like, it's going away from the
16:09openings.
16:10Uh, by the way, our objective at the end of this presentation is to get to that city that you
16:14see in the distance.
16:15This beautiful castle with this gigantic staircase that we'll see later on from, uh, a bit closer.
16:20Also, something that's quite cool at night, uh, those trees that were very autumnal, some of them become very pink,
16:27almost like sakura trees.
16:28You know, the Japanese cherry blossom trees.
16:30And, uh, it looks really magical, I think.
16:32Okay, so, uh, let's move on, and let me just move the camera again, and let's take a good shot
16:38of everybody here.
16:40So, we keep everybody in view.
16:43And, uh, the music as well is really nice.
16:45Oh, this guy, yeah.
16:47Yeah, so, basically, because we just want to show a bit of the exploration, you're skipping, uh, and trying to
16:53run away from enemies that try to attack you, right?
16:55Because we've already focused a lot on the battle system.
16:58Exactly.
16:58And we will do so more later.
17:00So, actually, my objective now...
17:03Is to get away from this enemy first.
17:05Well, he's, as the name says, on top of it, he's smart.
17:09Yeah, he's smart.
17:10All right.
17:10So, uh, we are here at the Farlane Central Pulse, and, uh, I really like this big tree.
17:15And, uh, these guys, for example...
17:16And also, there's massive pollen just lying around there.
17:19Yes, which shines brighter at night.
17:21Yeah.
17:21Um, this guy, for example, will not attack me, unless I attack him first.
17:25Uh, I mean, it looks a bit like...
17:28It looks like a herbivore, right?
17:30Kind of.
17:31I know.
17:31I mean, it doesn't look very hostile.
17:32It looks cute and nice.
17:34Uh, and there are other enemies that, as you saw, as soon as they see me, they will attack me.
17:38In previous Xenobl Chronicles games, uh, there was, uh, there were icons on top of the enemies that, uh, pointed
17:43out if the enemy was naturally hostile or how he would attack the party.
17:47Uh, here, uh, that's not there anymore, but that's a specific choice made by the development team.
17:52Because they really want people to focus on, uh, exploring and remembering and learning by doing, learning by being in
17:59the world, basically.
18:00Which enemy will attack you, which will not.
18:02Of course, these guys don't look very menacing.
18:04When you have, like, a big piranha with a, uh, with a full set of teeth, uh, uh, looking at
18:08you, you know that probably the guy will attack you.
18:11So, that's the...
18:12Then it's time for a detour.
18:13But I think now it's time to walk over there, because there is this, uh, question mark.
18:18Yeah, this is an optional quest.
18:19This is a side quest.
18:20And, uh, uh, in this case, this side quest will automatically trigger as I approach.
18:26Because these are probably the worst mercenaries in the world of Xenoblake Chronicles 2.
18:31Yeah, this is great.
18:31Uh, that, uh, uh, well, they are surrounded by Ignas, this, uh, kind of lizard people.
18:37Uh, and, uh, well, are you okay?
18:40Rex is a kind guy, you know, he just wants to help out.
18:43Um, so, Nia also, she's, Nia, she's very much more into the action and doing, instead of talking.
18:50So, we'll take care of it.
18:52I got the quest.
18:53We've got to start somewhere.
18:55Aptly named.
18:57And, uh, let's set it as active, sure.
19:00And immediately we will start the fight with these, uh, three Ignas that are attacking us.
19:06And what you can see here is that two of the Ignas are attacking Rex.
19:10And you can see that with the two orange indicators.
19:12Whereas one of them is attacking Tora.
19:14And we want, actually, Tora to draw more attention.
19:17Because he is, has much higher health and also much, he's the tank of our party, basically.
19:22And, uh, you see, I lost, I lost the aggression of this enemy.
19:24Everybody's on Tora now.
19:26Um, at the moment, sometimes Nia does too much damage, so she gets the aggression of the enemies.
19:31But at the moment, um, Tora is, uh, configured as a tank.
19:36He's more prone to this role tank, meaning getting all the hits and letting other people do the damage.
19:42So the healer can focus on, uh, on him.
19:45And, uh, what's interesting is that the roles of these characters, the fact that Nia is a bit more healing
19:52oriented,
19:53I'm more damage oriented, and Tora is more, uh, tanking oriented right now.
19:58Uh, they, they, yes, they, of course, depend on the, uh, aptitude of these characters.
20:02But more than anything, they depend on, uh, the blades that I have equipped, uh, to the character.
20:09So, um, because different blades bring different arts, like we saw before,
20:13I could have equipped, uh, blades that are more tanking oriented, for example,
20:18and I could make Rex become the tank instead.
20:20Or I could, uh, equip blades that are more healing oriented, and I could help Nia with healing, uh, for
20:27example.
20:27So, you really have the freedom to customize, uh, each character, uh, and each playstyle, really, to suit your needs.
20:34Of course, if you want.
20:36If you want, of course.
20:37Yeah.
20:41So, what you can see, again, is, uh, auto attacks are, uh, charging the normal arts,
20:47normal arts are charging the elemental arts, and, um, then, when we use the elements,
20:55we can switch between different blades to get, uh, good elemental combo going.
21:00And, uh, I was telling you before that, uh, there is this system of trade-offs, you know,
21:03you do something, uh, at a cost.
21:05Now, for example, I could start my, uh, I could start with a level four, uh, um, because I charge
21:12it up to the maximum level.
21:13So, it will do a lot of damage.
21:14I will do it now.
21:15Now, and I will get a nice scene, as well, with Tora, uh, sorry, with, uh, Rex and Pyra attacking
21:20together, and...
21:23And hopefully a big number, of course.
21:26Of course.
21:27Well, I just destroyed him, because he was almost dead, so, uh, uh, the guy is gone now.
21:32Um, so, um, so, now we just complete the quest.
21:37That's another problem sorted out.
21:39Um, there is, obviously, dialogue in the game.
21:41Some of the side quests, they are not voiced, but, uh, a lot of the, a lot of the game
21:44is voiced.
21:45Yeah.
21:46Um, basically, what happened, I'm just gonna skip, uh, through the text a bit quickly, uh, for the sake of
21:52time.
21:52But what happened is that, uh, they are bodyguards.
21:54They were hired by an employer to protect him.
21:55They lost their client, basically, and now we have to find their client.
22:00Uh, so, as I said, really very poor mercenaries here.
22:02Uh, there's also always an element of humor.
22:05Of course, there are very, there are serious themes, serious topics, but, uh, also an element of, uh, uh, an
22:11element of, uh, uh, humor always in Xenoblade games.
22:14So, let me just get rid of this guy, because, I mean, he's already here.
22:18And he disturbed me while I was talking.
22:20Yeah, he was thinking before, and he was like, man, I think I need to try.
22:23So, maybe you can explain something about the break and topple system.
22:26Yes.
22:27Because that's one of the things that we know from, uh, previous Xenoblade games, but, which, uh, comes back in
22:33a more expanded way.
22:35Yeah.
22:36So, uh, break, topple are statuses of the enemy, like you see now.
22:40Uh, basically, for break, you sort of damage their armor.
22:43So, you can, you have arts that put the enemy in break status for a very short time.
22:48And during that time, you will do a little bit more damage.
22:51From break, if an enemy is in break, I can press anchor shot and, uh, have a topple effect.
22:56So, the enemy will fall on the ground and will stop attacking and will get more damage.
23:00Uh, this was present also in previous Xenoblade Chronicles games.
23:03Now, there are two new layers.
23:05Uh, after topple, I could launch.
23:08And I will try to do it now, actually.
23:09You can switch, yeah.
23:11So, I have, uh, Kizaragi has power swipe, which launches.
23:14So, launch has this effect where the enemy is on the air and starts rolling.
23:18And there is a fourth layer, which is a smash.
23:21When the enemy is in the air and rolling, I can smash him down to the ground for increased damage.
23:25And one thing that I really loved about how you triggered this is that it actually shows what we have
23:31just been saying before.
23:32Because what you did was you used an art with, uh, Pyra to create, uh, the topple effect.
23:39And then you switched to a different blade and immediately used one of their arts to create a launch effect.
23:44So, it's at the tip of two buttons instead of having the whole bar that you have to cycle through.
23:50So, it shows how immediate this system is and how you use it for your convenience, but at the same
23:56time, you use it to go one layer deeper than before.
23:59Yes.
24:00Actually, uh, I'm just gonna keep running.
24:02But, uh, I often had the problem in Xenoblade Chronicles 1 where I, uh, I mean, it was in, uh,
24:08break status and I wanted to put it in topple status.
24:10But by the time I reached the art palette, by the, by the time I moved through the art palette
24:15and reached that, uh, that path, the break effect was already gone or the topple effect was already gone.
24:20So, uh, let me just go out of the combat here for a moment.
24:25Or not.
24:25Ah, this guy is, um, ranged.
24:27He has a bow and arrow, so that's...
24:29Yeah, a little bit further.
24:30He's very persistent.
24:31Yeah.
24:31He really doesn't like me.
24:33Wow.
24:34He still has you, Mark?
24:36Yes.
24:36Well, maybe you can walk a little bit beyond.
24:41I mean, I think we might be back there at some point.
24:44No, no, he's on the other side of the lake.
24:48He just walked away.
24:49Yeah.
24:50So...
24:50Okay.
24:51Finally.
24:51Well, at least it gives us, again, another beautiful view.
24:54Yes.
24:54Of Araya.
24:55Again, we start to see more this giant staircase and the city, the city is called Fonsamima, and, uh, that's
25:01where we want to go.
25:02But first, uh, I said before, um, the developer told us that, uh, uh, this, uh, area has a bit
25:08of a dungeon-like element.
25:10Yeah.
25:10So, I, uh, already triggered some of these events in order not to show story cuts in that would spoil
25:16people.
25:16Uh, so, uh, the very first time that I got to this lake, that gate in the distance was closed.
25:22And the level of this lake was much higher.
25:26Uh, this waterfall, uh, was not a waterfall.
25:28It was actually blocked by some, uh, logs.
25:31What I did was, uh, a skill check.
25:34So, um, my, my blades, uh, have certain, uh, skills that are, uh, innate abilities that they have.
25:41Uh, for example, Pyra has fire mastery.
25:43Because, obviously, she's a fire, she's a fire, uh, elemental in a way.
25:47Uh, and, uh, I used this fire mastery to break, uh, that log that was over there.
25:52Uh, making the waterfall, creating that waterfall, making the level of the lake go down.
25:58And, therefore, allowing me to open, uh, that gate.
26:00Um, and as I said, like, really learning how to traverse in Uriah is really important as well.
26:06Well, and this, again, is one of those beautiful things, right?
26:08That, um, what, what it shows is, it's, it really retains the core of what makes previous Xenoblade games.
26:17You have a huge element of exploration and you have a very deep, uh, combat and customization system.
26:24Yes.
26:24And what we've shown now is, of course, on the one side, how this combat system is more streamlined but
26:30also deepened.
26:31And on the other side, we're now also showing how the exploration is still very much there and, and also,
26:38um, expanded on in a few subtle ways.
26:42Yes.
26:42Uh, I mean, also, you know, jumping and reaching a place that at the beginning seems impossible, uh, some elements
26:48of light platforming are all elements that we've seen in previous Xenoblade Chronicles games and definitely play, uh, a role,
26:56uh, here as well.
26:57Um, I will try now to find a pretty interesting fight.
27:05I hope, I have to find a place where I, I want to drop down.
27:10And...
27:11Yeah, you probably want to find a bit of water then.
27:13Yeah, let me see.
27:15This is kind of risky, but...
27:17I think it's going to be good.
27:18Yes.
27:19Okay.
27:20Well aimed.
27:21Good.
27:23Um, so, I want to fight a big, unique monster that has lots of HP and will allow us to
27:30go through, uh, other systems as well, uh, of the gameplay.
27:34Yeah.
27:35Because, really, it's layer upon layer upon layer of, uh, system.
27:38Oops.
27:38Yeah, and that's basically what we're, what we're doing now, right?
27:41We're trying to...
27:43Oh!
27:44Uh-oh.
27:45Ansels are not fun.
27:46Ansels are not fun.
27:47Should I fight?
27:48Yeah, maybe.
27:49Okay.
27:49Ooh!
27:49Let's fight.
27:50Ooh!
27:50I hope that Thora gets the aggro quickly.
27:53Because he's level 24 and Ansels are big and do a lot of damage.
27:59So, fortunately, Nia is ready for the healing.
28:06Yeah, maybe we want to get a potion over there in the distance.
28:09Uh, Nia will get it automatically if my characters are at our own health.
28:13I don't need to get it myself.
28:14Ah, she's so nice.
28:15Yes.
28:17Well, actually, she, she's quite a character.
28:20Uh-oh.
28:20She's a very nice character, I think, in, uh, uh, in Xenobre Chronicles 2, and she definitely
28:26has an attitude, I think.
28:28So, uh, we could talk a bit about, uh, elemental combos and how to do it together, right?
28:33Yeah.
28:33So, now, you see, both, um, all of my characters have an elemental, uh, art available.
28:38Uh, I am...
28:38Should we start with Stone?
28:39Yes.
28:39Let's start with Stone with, uh, uh, Tora.
28:42And now, uh, please focus on the top right corner of the screen.
28:48You see that, uh, this thing that appears up there, it's sort of like a path.
28:52I executed a level one stone art.
28:55Now, I will execute Volcano with, uh, Nia, which is a level two fire art.
29:00And I will go up this path.
29:02All right.
29:07Oh, he died.
29:09But we're going to see it with the next enemy.
29:11Yes, exactly.
29:12We're on our way to the enemy that will really allow us to go in-depth about that, because
29:16it's a very strong enemy.
29:17I think you have to probably go...
29:18Uh, no, no, no, uh, I cannot go up from there.
29:21Uh, I have to go...
29:23Well, then let's just explore a little bit more, right?
29:25Yes.
29:26Uh, oh, this is a brog, which is, uh, those gigantic posanous toads.
29:31Yeah, you have a bit of, uh, feud with them, right?
29:33Yeah, I don't particularly like them, because they apply a lot of very nasty effects on, uh,
29:38the characters.
29:39This, that looks like a beautiful flower, is actually a gigantic carnivorous plant that
29:43will pop out from the ground and try to eat us.
29:45So, let's move away from that, too.
29:47So, there's enough hazards around.
29:49Yes.
29:50And we're actually...
29:51We don't have to find the right place to jump from.
29:54Excellent.
29:55And we're actually...
29:56Oh, there's Raghi again.
29:57Yeah.
29:58So, let me try to go back up.
30:01Sorry for the repetition.
30:03Um...
30:04To be honest, I mean, we haven't seen this area before, so I don't think it's such a bad thing
30:08to see some more of it.
30:10Yes.
30:11And this, again, is also one of those things in Xenoblade, right?
30:15That, uh, in Xenoblade Chronicles 2, these areas, they are massive.
30:18So, that means that, um, finding your way through involves revisiting and re-exploring
30:24certain parts of the environment and really trying to, um, see the clever paths through
30:30so that you don't get attacked by enemies all the time, like what is happening now.
30:36It's okay.
30:37You can dive into the water.
30:38You can dive into the water right now, yeah.
30:41So, um, I did a mistake before in, uh, jumping in the water.
30:44I should have simply, uh, gone for another route, actually.
30:48But, uh, we'll get there.
30:49We'll get there.
30:52And another thing that we're going to see as well is that, of course, the enemies are
30:56going to use different abilities as well.
30:59And it's not just about, like, using your own abilities to damage them, but also to, like,
31:33avoid their abilities.
31:34people now.
31:36Um, but also, um, you always encounter these massive enemies.
31:42these very intimidating big enemies.
31:44And it gives you sort of a sense of humility in the place where you are.
31:47You have a certain role in the ecosystem and you are not the biggest, strongest, uh, character
31:54around.
31:55Exactly.
31:55So, by playing through the game, you sort of, you're, you become stronger and you become
32:00more, um, important with, within that environment and you start to become more confident in taking
32:06on stronger enemies.
32:09Here it is.
32:09Like, for instance, Filippo is now at the point where he's confident enough to take on the
32:14cunning saggy.
32:15Which is a level 24 unique monster, so, of course, it does, it will do a lot of damage,
32:19but also he has enough HP, so you see him scratching on the ground.
32:23Yeah, he's going to use that more.
32:25Yes, definitely he's going to use that.
32:28Uh, we saw it, uh, earlier.
32:31All right, so let we, let's just go for this, for the full cycle now.
32:35We start, on the bottom right corner, using Arts to charge up Elemental Arts.
32:41Yes.
32:42And, uh, what I want to do is stop this enemy from using Blowdown.
32:46He has this ability where all of my characters fall on the ground, they stop attacking, they
32:50lose their, their turns, they lose their chains, and, uh, it's just then generally an overall
32:55very nasty, nasty thing.
32:56Yeah.
32:57So, my first objective is to stop him from using it.
33:00You see, uh, how he pushed away Nia, uh, completely.
33:04So, to do that, I need to charge up my Elemental Arts.
33:08I'm, my objective now is to charge up, uh, my Elemental Arts to level 3, which I hope...
33:17Yeah, so I guess you could already, uh, maybe switch to Kaidiyaku?
33:21I, it's just because Nia is faster in, uh, like, the swing of the sword is faster, so I'll,
33:26charge up as much as I can, uh, with her.
33:30So now I'm at level 3.
33:32Let's try to start this.
33:33So, level 1, Stone, with, uh, uh, with Tora.
33:39There you go.
33:40Now, level 2, Fire, Volcano, with Nia.
33:44Yeah, and you can see the gauge from Stone will change into a gauge from Volcano.
33:50Yeah.
33:50And that shows you how much time you have left to execute what is in the top right corner.
33:55So now I have level 3, Wind.
33:56I can go up the path and do a Seal Blowdown.
33:59So I will stop, after doing this, I will stop the enemy from using the Blowdown ability.
34:04Volcanic Storm.
34:08Excellent.
34:09And, bam!
34:10Big numbers.
34:11That was a huge number, I would say.
34:13That was a very, very satisfying roll-bang game number.
34:17Satisfying number, yes.
34:17So, you see that now, uh, on the top right corner, the, uh, text Seal Blowdown appears.
34:23Because the enemy will not be able to use Blowdown anymore, basically.
34:27Yeah.
34:27Uh, but, at the same time, a green orb is floating around cunning Sagi.
34:35And that means that, because the last art I used was Wind, that means that, uh, now,
34:40Wind does less damage to this enemy from this moment on.
34:45Yeah.
34:45So, again, this is a risk and reward system, right?
34:47A balancing act.
34:48The trade-off, that when you go for a huge number, for a lot of damage, and you use, for
34:56instance, a Wind Elemental art for that, it means that after that, um, going for the same
35:01path will give you a lower reward.
35:03So, um, basically what you want to do is you want to build in a variation into your attack
35:09pattern, like what Filippo is doing now.
35:10He's triggered an ice, uh, uh, art, and now probably you want to do another ice.
35:17I'm trying to do, yeah, exactly.
35:18I'm trying to do level two ice with, uh, uh, I just have to wait for Kizaragi to be active
35:22again.
35:23Exactly.
35:24Well, you have enough time.
35:25Yes.
35:26So, we can see in the top, uh, of the screen above Cunning Sagi's name that the ice bar
35:31is going down.
35:32And we see in the bottom left that Kizaragi is now ready to be switched in.
35:37And it's crazy.
35:38You see also how the names of all of these arts change, uh, based on the path that I'm
35:42doing.
35:42Yeah.
35:42So now I do a level three with, uh, let's just have one, take one second to show that
35:47in the, in the top right corner, you can now see that it goes from ice to either, um, darkness
35:54or stone.
35:54Darkness or stone.
35:55Exactly.
35:56So now.
35:56Permafor crash.
35:58I like the names.
36:02Great animation.
36:05Bam.
36:06That was definitely cool.
36:07You see the, the, the ice, like, I like how.
36:1019,000.
36:12And yeah, I did a lot of damage there.
36:14But now you see that I have two orbs floating on the enemy.
36:18Now the enemy is resistant to wind and these reasons, resistant to stone.
36:22So now we have the final layer for now of this demonstration of the gameplay.
36:27Now we look top left.
36:29Top left.
36:29There is this white bar of three segments.
36:31I can use each one of these segments to revise my characters when they fall, when they,
36:35when they die, if they lose all of their HP.
36:38But again, I can instead press plus to execute chain attacks.
36:43Yeah.
36:43And I completely use this bar.
36:45And chain attacks are again something from previous Xenoblade games.
36:48But it's now very different because it's exactly, again, expanded on.
36:52So now I can break, I can burst these two orbs that I have applied that the enemy has to
36:57reset his resistance.
36:59Yeah.
36:59Now I control all of my, all of my guys at the same time.
37:03So on the bottom right side, you see which elemental arch you could use.
37:07Yes.
37:08To break through these orbs.
37:10I think I will use ice now.
37:12Yeah.
37:13To, uh, ice is opposite to wind in the, in this game.
37:15So if I use the opposite element, you see wind is flashing.
37:19I need to, uh, uh, Kizaragi is performing a move and the wind, uh, element is almost burst.
37:27Now I can only use, I only have poppy on Natora, so I use poppy of course.
37:37And, uh, I use now fire.
37:43Yeah, it doesn't matter so much.
37:44Yeah, it doesn't matter so much at this point.
37:46Let me just use fire because I like, uh, the guy, the blade and its animation.
37:52Nice.
37:53So now you can see that both of them are wrecked but not burst.
37:57Yes, exactly.
37:58So, uh, they are still around.
38:00So actually we failed in our mission to get rid of these elemental orbs because we want,
38:04now it really limits us in doing a lot of damage.
38:07Yes.
38:08Because, uh, now the cunning saggy has extra resistance to both wind and, um, earth.
38:14So, um, what we want to do is build up this chain attack gauge again.
38:19Yes.
38:19Uh, Filippo, how do you build up the chain attack gauge?
38:21Uh, by attacking, by executing hearts, uh, and by attacking effectively, by, uh, performing combos.
38:27So basically by staying active.
38:29Yes.
38:31Well, in the meantime you have already activated heat, so you could go for another, uh,
38:37I'll try to burn out now.
38:42So, you used a fire art which means we go up in the path.
38:45Yes.
38:46And now I can only do a level three fire, which I hope Nia will charge up soon.
38:50Because I definitely will not have the time to do that.
38:53Um, oh, he's calling allies as well.
38:56Uh-oh.
38:56He's calling additional enemies to join the fight, which is, I would say, definitely not what I want.
39:01But also I, uh, because I changed the path now, he can blow down again.
39:05Yeah, because now the seal is on shackle driver instead of on blow down.
39:09Yes.
39:09So anyway, um, let me just, sorry, let me just go back to, uh, the chain attack.
39:13If I, uh, managed to burst the, those two, um, those two arts, I could have actually kept going with
39:19my chain attack.
39:20Sometimes you get a prompt and if you press the button at the right moment, you can keep chaining, basically.
39:27And you can keep going from character to character that you control.
39:30I didn't manage at that time.
39:32Oh, this was a very, very smooth fight.
39:35And it's, um, it's incredible that you've been able to show two elemental orbs appearing.
39:39Yes.
39:39Um, but let's, can you just give us a nice overview shot so that we can briefly recap what just
39:45happened.
39:45So we used auto attacks to charge arts.
39:48We used arts to charge elemental arts.
39:52We used the elemental arts of different blades to go up into an elemental path.
39:58And by having a level three elemental art going, we did the elemental orb on an enemy.
40:04And then we used a chain attack to break the orb so that we could basically start from zero again
40:10and start doing a lot of damage again.
40:12So you can really see how all these systems tie into each other, but because they're all made visual
40:18and they're all at the tip of a, uh, of a finger.
40:21Yeah.
40:22It means that it becomes very easy to understand how you trigger all of this.
40:26It really is a path.
40:27It's sort of, you're going up one step towards the ladder of awesomeness.
40:31Yeah.
40:32And it also feels like, well said.
40:34It also feels like even for my friends who will be joining me when I will play it, it will
40:41be easier for them to understand what I do.
40:43Exactly.
40:44I remember back in the days when I was playing Xenoblade Chronicles, they were like struggling to follow what I
40:50was doing actually.
40:51And this time it's much, much clearer.
40:53And also by the way, imagine, uh, doing all of this, uh, like on the bus, uh, with, uh, with
40:59the switch.
40:59That's also why, uh, the, um, you might seem that the UI is quite big because you also have to
41:05be able to play it, uh, comfortably in portable mode.
41:08Exactly. And I mean, yeah, just imagine having this massive, massive game in the, in your fingertips when you're sitting
41:15on the bus or in a train or in a plane.
41:17It's really, uh, it will give you so many beautiful moments and you also have all those moments that you
41:23can spend with it.
41:25Yeah.
41:25By the way, here we see something quite interesting.
41:28These are drivers themselves with their own blades.
41:31And, uh, that guy level 25 is a unique one that, uh, will kill me in about three hits.
41:36So I'm not gonna, uh, start this fight.
41:39But what I wanted to say is just that, see, we have three blades and three drivers and they can
41:43do everything that I can do.
41:45Yeah.
41:45So, uh, even though they're not gigantic monsters, they are really, really scary and really, really dangerous.
41:50Yeah. So basically in this world, you are not the only ones who are, have this connection between drivers and
41:57blades.
41:58No, it's just, it's a common, it's a common thing. It's not common.
42:01I mean, of course, drivers are rare people that have this ability.
42:04But, uh, you find not just you, you find many other people, entire armies of them.
42:10Again, by the way, this staircase, it's just so impressive, right?
42:12Yeah. So you see, I couldn't have gone up from the staircase because it actually dives deeper into the underground.
42:17And, uh, the, uh, the edges are too high if I cannot jump on that.
42:21But, uh, I just want to show you.
42:24Wow.
42:25Just let's, we are very, we are much closer now to the, to the city.
42:28Because from where did we come?
42:30Uh, we, yeah, from behind, behind, behind, behind there.
42:34And, uh, actually there's one guy that I can show you if you can see that gigantic sea snake, uh,
42:40next to the tree.
42:42Yeah. He's just chilling above his world.
42:44Yeah. And just like, uh, in other Xenobl Iconicals game, if I dive down there, all of the enemies will
42:48not be around my level 20, 21, 19, 25.
42:51No, they will be, what did you see?
42:5370?
42:53Yeah, exactly. Like from 35 to 70 something.
42:57Yeah. For now we stay here.
42:58But, um, this is also an element typical of Xenobl Iconicals games that, uh, it is a living environment.
43:04With its own fauna and, uh, flora, with its own ecosystem.
43:09Well, and because of that, it's also an environment that tells a lot of stories simply by being there.
43:13Yes.
43:13Because these enemies, like what you were saying, we had this, uh, special enemy, which, which is extra strong,
43:19and which was sort of like digging at the, at the tree.
43:23So immediately also one of the things you wonder is why is it digging with its claws at the tree?
43:28Well, we didn't show it, but there was actually also something to find there.
43:32Yes, there were actually, uh, there was a collection point with a skill check where I needed to have the
43:37proper blades equipped to be able to dig something from there.
43:40You're right.
43:42Um, so now, of course, um, for the viewers at home, uh, it looks pretty dark now, the image,
43:48because we are in an enclosed space, it's night, the light is not filtering from, uh, the openings in the,
43:54um, in the, um, on the Titan.
43:58Uh, but, uh, um, it's really to create this moody atmosphere.
44:03You see, like, this would be the big opening that filters, uh, that, uh, that, uh, has lots of light.
44:09Yeah, it would be completely bright during the day and it dims, dims off during the night.
44:13And what I personally like about it is that for me it also gives this feeling that not only are
44:19we inside a living environment,
44:21but also this Titan itself is traveling.
44:24Absolutely.
44:24Also, uh, yes, he's moving and, um, you know, the, the sea of clouds on which all of these creatures
44:30are floating has tides that change.
44:32They go higher and they go lower.
44:33So you could really actually, um, have different parts of, uh, an area that become explorable.
44:41And here we actually see, yeah.
44:43I was waiting for you to show it.
44:45It's so beautiful.
44:46So this big, uh, this big, uh, organic, uh, sort of vehicle is itself, uh, a Titan, a smaller one
44:52that, uh, um, this is, in a way the transportation system of the game is that people are, uh, using
44:58smaller Titans as taxis to go from one, uh, big, uh, big one to the other.
45:02I'm, I'm sensing a theme here because earlier today we were talking about Jaxies.
45:06And now we're talking about that, which were Jaguar taxis.
45:10And now we're talking about taxis because they are Titan taxis.
45:12Oh yeah.
45:13Yeah.
45:14Not enough.
45:15Not enough.
45:16Um, I'm not sure which one I will prefer, but I think for now this one is a bit more
45:22impressive.
45:23You want to color the wings.
45:24Maybe it's even easier to steer.
45:26So.
45:26Oh yeah.
45:27That's for sure.
45:30And here we see where we were.
45:33Uh, let me just go into Fonsami.
45:34Yeah, exactly.
45:35I think we have another spot there as well.
45:38Yes.
45:39Oh yeah.
45:39Yeah.
45:39Definitely.
45:42So, so where are we getting in now, Filippo?
45:44So Fonsami is this big, uh, medieval fantasy castle town.
45:50Uh, and, uh, you'll see that as soon as I enter there's tons of NPCs.
45:54These are all vendors like a fishmonger, a butcher, uh, uh, baker, uh, just here at the entrance.
46:00There's tons of people I can talk to and discover new things about the world and trigger quests.
46:05Uh, there's vendors of accessories for my characters.
46:09And, uh, if I, I think.
46:11Yeah.
46:11And this is a layer of the game that we're not really gonna touch today because we focus so much
46:15on the battle system.
46:16But look how big this city is.
46:18I mean, I have actually never even been here, uh, before.
46:21I just discovered this staircase.
46:22Maybe I shouldn't have.
46:23Maybe, I don't know.
46:24We'll see.
46:25It's a back alley.
46:26So let's avoid it for now.
46:27Yes, exactly.
46:28We want to stay safe.
46:29I mean, we've already overcome many challenges.
46:31I mean, we've already overcome very, very dangerous enemies.
46:36So let's, let's just go for the safe.
46:38And we want other players to explore it by themselves.
46:42See, then you have characters talking to each other.
46:43There's a, you see all of these posters on the walls.
46:46Yeah.
46:47And, uh, that's because this is a theater.
46:49Oh.
46:50Uh, and, uh, if I talk to the people around here, they will talk about, uh, oh, this one actress
46:55is in this and she's a stutter.
46:56Yeah.
46:57So this is something that Filippo never showed to me even.
47:00I want, I want to keep some surprises, not just for the viewers, but also for you.
47:03Like, I want to keep you on your toes and, uh, have you, uh, sweat on like, oh, is he
47:08gonna do something we're not allowed to?
47:11No, that was actually a beautiful thing.
47:12It's, uh, really cool.
47:13So here we are at the top of Fons Amima.
47:17Oh, yeah.
47:17With this big gigantic gate behind us.
47:20And, uh, it's just midnight now.
47:22So, oh, there's a, the version is, by the way, it's not finished, obviously, the game.
47:28Uh, it's still, uh, still being developed by our developers in, in Japan.
47:32By Monolith Studios.
47:34They're working hard to, to get it done in time.
47:36Yes.
47:36And it's, it's shaping up beautifully.
47:38Yes.
47:38I mean, I'm, I was so excited that we were able to show Uriah because it is such a different
47:44feel than what we've shown so far with Gormoth.
47:48And at the same time, it allowed, uh, so mainly Filippo, of course, to go into this, this detail of
47:54the layered combat system.
47:56Yes.
47:56And, uh, here we see, actually, if you look far, far, far, far, far into the distance, that's where we
48:02came from.
48:02This is the big staircase that we saw in the distance.
48:05Yeah.
48:05And here we are at the top of Fonsa Mima.
48:07And you see how also the, the, this, uh, castle town has been built considering the structure of the world.
48:14Like, it's been built, uh, on the Titan.
48:17On the Titan.
48:17And in a way, you know, you, living creatures on the Titan, uh, respect where they live and they try
48:25to work with, uh, let's say the geography and the landscape of the Titan.
48:29And I think, um, let's actually line, line up our cast.
48:33Yeah.
48:34For, for a final group picture.
48:35You mean?
48:36Yes.
48:36Yeah, exactly.
48:37Okay.
48:38I'm, I'm aligning.
48:39Yeah, yeah, yeah.
48:40There we are.
48:40They fit in my hand.
48:41And, uh, here we have our current, uh, parties, party members, uh, Rex and Pyra, Nia and Romark, Tora and
48:50Poppy, which will be, uh, surely my companions for hundreds of
48:56of hours when the game finally releases at the end of the year, uh, in winter.
49:01And I'm so excited, not just to play this on TV, but mainly also to be able to take it
49:06anywhere so that I can really sink in all those hours and explore Uriah, Gormoth and many more places.
49:14Yeah.
49:14Definitely.
49:14It really breaks my heart.
49:16I think I will miss these guys a lot, but it's not that long anymore.
49:20I think we just have to wait a little bit.
49:22Yes.
49:22And then we are finally able to get our hands on Xenoblade Chronicles 2.
49:27So thank you very much, guys, for showing us around.
49:29It was a pleasure.
49:30It's always a pleasure.
49:31Very much a pleasure.
49:32Especially in the new area, Uriah.
49:34Yes.
49:34So great.
49:35I can't wait for it.
49:36So thank you very much to you guys.
49:38Yeah.
49:39Obviously also thank you very much to everyone here at Gamescom attending our demonstration.
49:44and thank you very much to you guys at home tuning in through the live stream.
49:48We're going to be back later on that day and I hope you guys...
49:53I hope you enjoyed.
49:53We're going to be back Bu-fi.
