00:05In recreating Ancient Egypt, Assassin's Creed Origins
00:08doesn't just give players a city or three to explore
00:10with some countryside in between.
00:12It's building an entire seamless country
00:14you can travel freely across.
00:16This is the biggest world ever created
00:18for an Assassin's Creed game
00:19and it's packed with dynamic things
00:21to discover and pursue.
00:23You know, when we started by saying
00:25let's do Ancient Egypt,
00:26it was going to be a country.
00:27Ancient Egypt meant many things for us.
00:29It meant, yes, cities,
00:31but also all the wilderness areas
00:33and we wanted to show the diversity of this wilderness
00:35and something that people, as they play the game
00:37and get into hours and hours of it,
00:39they're constantly seeing new stuff
00:41from the world, from the environment.
00:43The team began with a world
00:44around the size of Assassin's Creed 4 Black Flags
00:46with one important difference.
00:48It's all land.
00:50Well, it's mostly land.
00:52No matter where you are,
00:54there's a density to the landscape
00:55that creates a feeling
00:56that there's always some area you haven't explored,
00:58something you haven't uncovered.
01:01In terms of the granularity of the details,
01:04the experiences that you can have,
01:06the things you can run into,
01:07the NPCs, the animals, the fauna,
01:10it's much, much more dense.
01:12So this is definitely, in terms of content,
01:15the biggest world we've ever built.
01:16We wanted the exploration of the world
01:18to really be jaw-dropping.
01:20We wanted people to be lost in this world
01:22for hours and hours,
01:23so the game is quite huge.
01:24The world is massive.
01:25Egypt, even in the game setting of 49 BCE,
01:28was never an undifferentiated landscape
01:30of deserts, pyramids, and snazzy headgear.
01:32It was huge and cosmopolitan,
01:34a hub of trade, agriculture, and craftsmanship.
01:37From Alexandria to Memphis,
01:39Egypt was a place of geographical contrast
01:41and cultural diversity,
01:42and recreating the entire country
01:44as a single open world
01:45is one of Assassin's Creed Origins'
01:47greatest achievements.
01:49So if you go into Alexandria,
01:52it's a very Greek city,
01:53a very big and broad streets,
01:55and then you go into Memphis,
01:56it's very crowded,
01:57and all of this is based
01:59on the historical research that we do.
02:00So we learned, for instance,
02:02that Memphis is very close to the Nile,
02:04and that the course of the Nile
02:05changed with centuries,
02:07and that it affected how the city was built.
02:09And so in return,
02:10that affects the way that we create that city,
02:12and that is what players will experience,
02:15a city filled with water,
02:16with caves surrounded by the Nile,
02:20with boats around.
02:21So a very, very nice and rich city.
02:24So historical research is very important for us.
02:26Next to capturing the scale and detail of Egypt,
02:29the game's biggest task
02:30is to fill its vast spaces
02:31with interesting things to see and do.
02:34The Egypt of Assassin's Creed Origins
02:35is a dynamic place,
02:37one where you'll always be able to find wildlife to hunt,
02:39a secret to uncover,
02:40a bandit gang to raid,
02:42or a quest to pursue.
02:43In fact, you'll need to discover
02:45the game's quests on your own,
02:46and there are multiple ways to do it.
02:48A vital contact might direct you
02:49to someone who wants you to check
02:50on a friend in danger, for example,
02:52or you might just stumble onto that friend
02:54while exploring
02:54and get pulled into a new adventure.
02:57You can even leave a quest at any time,
02:58pursue other tasks,
02:59and then pick up again
03:00from where you left off.
03:03There's tombs and temples to explore,
03:05there's puzzles in the world,
03:06you know, left by the ancient people.
03:09There's a lot of really cool activities
03:11to do in the world.
03:12There's a huge density there.
03:15Assassin's Creed Origins
03:17is set during the reign of Cleopatra,
03:18an extremely tumultuous
03:20and pivotal era for Egypt,
03:21and one that fits in well
03:23with the series' preference
03:24for periods of conflict, upheaval,
03:26and massive societal change.
03:28The game takes place
03:29during her ascension to the throne.
03:32During this time period,
03:34her father, Ptolemy XII,
03:35had passed away,
03:37and so he left the country
03:39into the hands of Cleopatra
03:40and her brother, Ptolemy XIII,
03:43who's the boy king,
03:44and right away,
03:46there was conflict and strife
03:48and the civil war between the two,
03:50and Cleopatra gets exiled.
03:52And so we catch up to her
03:53in our context when she's exiled,
03:56and so she's on her way
03:57to reclaiming her throne.
03:59Pretty much everyone
03:59in Cleopatra's family
04:01has been assassinating each other,
04:03so that creates this unique set
04:07that's tremendous to create a story
04:09and to go around all of this plot.
04:12Ptolemy XIII appears to have
04:14the full support
04:15of the Masked Secret Society,
04:16calling itself the Order of the Ancients,
04:18and since history tells us
04:20the boy king's power grab
04:21was orchestrated mostly by his advisors,
04:23it's likely the masked men
04:25are behind the civil war itself.
04:27The Order of the Ancients
04:28are trying to control Ptolemy XIII.
04:30They believe that he's younger and weak
04:32and that they could manipulate him easily.
04:34However, they're a secret society,
04:37and they will always be in Bayek's path,
04:39and so you will have to
04:40make your way through that.
04:42In any case,
04:43Cleopatra would soon have
04:44a powerful ally of her own.
04:46And at this point,
04:47we have Caesar who shows up
04:49at some point chasing
04:50after another Roman, Pompey.
04:52Pompey came to Egypt
04:54in order to be protected,
04:55thinking that they had an alliance.
04:58But Ptolemy,
04:59knowing that Caesar was coming,
05:00he decides to assassinate Pompey
05:02as a gift to Caesar,
05:04which only infuriates Caesar,
05:08saying that he was,
05:09yes, he was my enemy,
05:10but he was also a Roman.
05:12You cannot kill a Roman like that.
05:14And so this pushes him
05:15to ally with Cleopatra.
05:17And so we get to meet
05:18these key central figures,
05:20so Caesar being, you know,
05:21this legendary tactician,
05:23and I think one of the most epic
05:25historical figures
05:26that we can possibly have
05:27in the Assassin's Creed series.
05:29We wanted our players
05:31to experience it
05:32sort of as if, you know,
05:33for Bayek,
05:34these are also,
05:35at some point,
05:37gods.
05:38You know, Cleopatra,
05:40Ptolemy,
05:40they're considered to be gods
05:41in this world.
05:42And as he meets them
05:44and he's almost,
05:45you know,
05:46in awe of who they are,
05:47as soon as he meets them
05:48and he realizes
05:49these are human beings
05:50with their own flaws
05:51and weaknesses
05:51and strengths,
05:53and he connects with some,
05:55doesn't connect with others.
05:56And this is,
05:57we want it to be a reflection
05:58of how, you know,
05:59hopefully our players
06:00can also envision
06:01these kind of people.
06:02Have them boiled to death
06:03inside a bronze bowl.
06:05Goddess, no.
06:06They were co-host.
06:07Vajak's quest
06:08isn't just about
06:08exploring ancient Egypt
06:09or defying the Ptolemies
06:11or even fighting
06:11the masked agents
06:12of the Order of the Ancients.
06:14It's about finding
06:15a new place
06:16in a world
06:16whose changing traditions
06:17have made him obsolete
06:18and it's a quest
06:19that will lead,
06:20eventually,
06:21to the founding
06:22of what we now know
06:22as the Assassin Brotherhood.
06:24From the start,
06:25we know that assassins
06:27are fictive characters,
06:28so it's all right.
06:29I mean,
06:30we acknowledge that
06:31this is not a documentary
06:32even if we're based off history,
06:34even if history is our playground
06:35and we like to play with it.
06:36So Vajak,
06:38within that environment,
06:39even though he's fictive
06:40and he interacts
06:41with real people,
06:42we try to make it believable.
06:43That really routings him
06:45into the realm of Egypt.
