00:00J.R., I could play this for the rest of the day, so I will.
00:05Now PlayStation Underground.
00:07We're canceling all other folks coming in today to just play this.
00:17Hello my friends and welcome back to PlayStation Underground.
00:19On today's show we are playing Swords of Ditto,
00:21which is coming to PS4 on April 24th.
00:24I am joined by J.R. from Devolver.
00:25J.R., welcome to the program.
00:27Thanks for having me.
00:27It's good to have you here.
00:29This game is adorable.
00:31It is, isn't it?
00:32We are about to play a little bit.
00:34Is this towards the beginning?
00:35This is.
00:36This is the very beginning.
00:37You're waking up on an island.
00:39It's pretty traditional of your RPGs, right?
00:42But this one's a little different because it's a bite-sized or compact action RPG.
00:46It's all procedurally generated, and you could do it with a friend,
00:50either alone or with a friend,
00:52and it's very balanced in terms of you could drop in, drop out.
00:56and let's just kind of get into it and show you what it's all about.
00:59Please.
01:00This is coming from Studio OneBitBeyond, is that correct?
01:03Yeah, that's correct.
01:04OneBitBeyond, it's about five guys out in the U.K.
01:07Yeah.
01:08Look at me.
01:09I am so cute.
01:10Let's follow that sword up to the left.
01:12All right.
01:12Fine, I guess.
01:15Oh, can I sprint?
01:16Not yet.
01:16So what we're doing right now is just kind of an intro to the town.
01:21We're on the island of Ditto.
01:23Fitting.
01:24Yeah.
01:24So we're basically, everything that you see in this town,
01:27every game, every playthrough, basically, will be procedurally generated.
01:30So it's a new town.
01:31Every time the shops will switch around, the positions,
01:35you know, right now we've got to head over to that statue,
01:37and that's like the last hero of the world, of the overworld, basically.
01:41And we are going to go take the sword out of the stone, essentially,
01:45and become the heroes of the story.
01:48That sounds familiar, removing a sword from a stone.
01:51I think I've heard this tale before.
01:54It's very, very familiar, but the journey is a lot different.
01:58I feel like you're faster than me.
02:00I just kind of know what I'm doing here, right?
02:03Dang.
02:05Oh, man.
02:06I did not know what I was signing up for with this recording today.
02:10It's all good.
02:11Ah, the true heroes.
02:12So now you're going to be able to roll around and attack.
02:17Yay.
02:18It's so cute.
02:19Everything is so cute about this game.
02:21I believe when Justin and I,
02:23I think it was when we interviewed someone from One Bit Beyond before.
02:27It was Jonathan Biddle.
02:29Bids.
02:29We call him Bids.
02:30Bids.
02:31He's the design director.
02:33When we spoke to Bids before,
02:34I believe one of the things that was important to the team
02:37was kind of creating a very, like, family-friendly RPG,
02:39something that you could play with your kids or your siblings.
02:43Yeah.
02:43He's got kids of his own,
02:44and they just wanted to have that kind of nostalgic factor
02:49of games we've all played growing up,
02:51but also make it accessible to everyone.
02:53So you could sit there with your son, your daughter,
02:58your sibling, whatever.
02:59But at the same time,
03:00make it challenging for us adults, I guess.
03:03Your little cousin Frank.
03:04Exactly.
03:05Can't forget about Frank.
03:06No, nobody's going to forget about Frank.
03:08Oh, man.
03:08I love Frankie.
03:09Little Frankie.
03:10All right.
03:11So this is kind of our first encounter,
03:14if you will, in terms of battling the enemy.
03:18And again, every time you play this,
03:19you're going to encounter different enemies,
03:22and it's kind of on a hundred-year cycle.
03:24So once you die, there's some permadeath, right?
03:27But a new hero appears every hundred years,
03:31and then you go and get the sword again,
03:32and then you kind of start the story over, the cycle.
03:36The combat already feels really nice.
03:39It's really good, right?
03:40I love action RPGs because you get all the great qualities
03:43that come with level building, storytelling, subsystems,
03:47but then you also, the action part,
03:49get the fun of a tactile button press.
03:52You can actually move around on the screen in real time,
03:55and I think that's...
03:56It's hard for me sometimes to go back
03:58to the more traditional turn-based RPGs.
04:00because it was a different era back then.
04:02Yeah, yeah, exactly.
04:03Requires a more patient mind than I have now.
04:06Yep.
04:07It's a little bit more streamlined.
04:08Let's see here.
04:09Let's go in here and check out the evil witch Wormo here.
04:13And this kind of sets the whole tone,
04:15or I guess the story of what we're going to be encountering,
04:18or fighting for, actually.
04:20Let's see.
04:21I see a dog bone.
04:25There's actually a lot of bones.
04:27Actually, I shouldn't have...
04:28Oh, sorry.
04:28That's fine.
04:29Yeah, let's do it.
04:30Let's do it.
04:30Classic error.
04:31Classic.
04:33So some of these enemy types, again,
04:35they're going to be very different every time you play,
04:37you know, unless you kind of jumped out of your playthrough
04:41and you didn't die.
04:42Oh, I have an arrow.
04:43Yeah, so if you hit triangle,
04:46all your, like, special weapons are mapped to your D-pad.
04:49So if you hit left or right,
04:51you have different options and different attacks
04:53with different weapons.
04:54Oh my gosh, yes, it's a yo-yo with spikes.
04:59Not safe for children.
05:00It's very quirky.
05:03This is the cutest.
05:07Huh.
05:08Huh.
05:09Huh.
05:13JR, I could play this for the rest of the day.
05:17So I will.
05:18Now PlayStation Underground.
05:19We're canceling all other folks coming in today
05:21to just play this.
05:27Yeah, this is really, really nice.
05:29I like that there's some, well, I'm a terrible shot,
05:32but it's nice that there's some light shooter elements here.
05:36The projectile weaponry.
05:38Yeah, if you hold the triangle button down,
05:42you can aim.
05:43Oh my gosh, what was that?
05:46Giant foot.
05:47Yeah, so there's a lot of quirky weapons.
05:49The developers are quirky folks,
05:51so they like to just, you know, make it fun.
05:53It's not your traditional weapons.
05:57So JR, I'm, like, miserable to say
06:00that we are almost out of time during our recording.
06:03But this is, I did it again.
06:05It's fine.
06:07One more time.
06:08Yeah, we got this.
06:09This has been a very short but very sweet
06:12and sensual look at Swords of Ditto,
06:14which is coming to PS4 on April 24th.
06:17If you are a fan of RPGs or you want to game a little bit
06:21with a little one in your life,
06:23little sibling, little kid,
06:26this is, I think, a great start.
06:28And also, if you don't mind me saying,
06:31good for falling off cliffs like I just did.
06:34Exactly.
06:34And again.
06:35And, you know, just to add to that note,
06:37so we are coming out April 24th with this
06:39and the pre-order is live
06:41and you get 20% off if you're a PS Plus member.
06:44There you go.
06:45Pre-order is available now on PlayStation Store.
06:47JR from Devolver, thank you so much
06:48for joining us on the program.
06:50Thanks, Ryan.
06:50This has been a look at Swords of Ditto
06:51and we'll see you next time, folks.
07:01PlayStation.
