00:00Is this video of Benjamin Netanyahu now being dubbed Coffeegate a deepfake?
00:17Now this video of the Israeli Prime Minister buying coffee went viral after claims started circulating online
00:25that Netanyahu had been killed or seriously injured by an Iranian strike on Israel.
00:31Now this speculation began around March the 13th after Netanyahu posted a press conference
00:38where some users claimed that footage was AI generated pointing to what they said was a sixth finger on his
00:45right hand.
00:47So the Prime Minister took to social media debunking these claims by posting this video.
00:52But soon after social media users and also AI tools such as Grok claimed that this video was also a
00:59deepfake.
01:01So the Independent examined this and the evidence states otherwise.
01:06First we geolocated this video to be taken at the Satafa Cafe in Jerusalem.
01:12We then reviewed the cafe's social media footage for that day.
01:16They had already posted Instagram stories showing Netanyahu arriving in the early afternoon on Sunday.
01:23Approximately two hours later Netanyahu posted this video to his social media account
01:28matching the timeline shown in the cafe's Instagram stories.
01:33So despite these viral claims there's absolutely no concrete evidence that Netanyahu is dead or injured.
01:39But this also highlights a broader issue as social media increasingly become shaped by deepfakes and AI generated synthetic media.
01:49Detection tools are not always reliable.
01:53Now that's why human verification methods such as timeline analysis and geolocating remains essential when debunking viral claims.
