00:00On the 11th of August, 1980, 37-year-old nurse Carol Bundy called the LAPD,
00:08claiming her boyfriend was the infamous Sunset Strip killer.
00:13Hello. Some time back, you were having a series of murders involving prostitutes from Hollywood?
00:18Uh-huh.
00:19Okay. Would you like to have your man today?
00:21I've only been involved with perhaps eight or nine of them.
00:25To even say co-conspirator is understating it.
00:28She actually got the victim in the car and handed him the gun.
00:32Her boyfriend was 32-year-old Doug Clark, a boiler engineer from Pennsylvania.
00:39Clark's dark fantasies had culminated in a sexually motivated killing spree
00:45targeting sex workers on the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles.
00:50The things that they did were unheard of, quite frankly.
00:55And Doug and Carol gave a whole new meaning to the term sexual deviant.
01:01Between May and July 1980, Doug Clark brutally murdered six women, mutilating one of his victims
01:09and decapitating another.
01:12It wouldn't be long before Bundy, spurred on by Clark, committed murder herself.
01:19Doesn't that make you feel bad, though, that you killed somebody?
01:22Would you really like to know the honest truth?
01:24Well, sure.
01:24Okay, the honest truth is it's fun to kill people, and if I was allowed to run loose, I'd probably
01:29do it again.
01:30The depraved actions of this deadly duo sent a wave of terror through the city of Los Angeles
01:36during the summer of 1980, making Doug Clark and Carol Bundy
01:42two of the world's most evil killers.
02:05On the 13th of November 1980, 32-year-old Doug Clark went on trial
02:12at the Superior Court of Los Angeles, charged with first-degree murder.
02:18His accomplice and jilted lover, Carol Bundy, was also accused of murder.
02:25Veteran homicide detective Frank Garcia was assigned to the task force
02:30dealing with the investigation.
02:33He interviewed Carol Bundy at length.
02:36She was the key to Clark.
02:39We knew it.
02:41She knew it.
02:42Clark knew it.
02:44And he would do his damnness to get her to turn and back up his story.
02:51Psychologist John Stolberg assessed 38-year-old Bundy while she was awaiting trial.
02:57My impression was she was a frumpy, 40-ish, bespectacled female
03:03and she didn't look like she was capable of murder.
03:07But by the time the case got to court, it was clear to Prosecutor Ronald Cohen
03:12just how dangerous these killers were.
03:15It was one of the most gruesome cases in terms of the crimes that were committed,
03:21in terms of the personalities of the killers.
03:24I've had a lot of heavy cases.
03:26This ranks right up there with the top.
03:31The killer's story begins on August the 26th, 1942.
03:37Carol Bundy spent much of her early years in California.
03:41Her mother was a tap dancer and her father worked in cinemas across the state.
03:47Young Carol started out as a fairly cute kid.
03:50Then she began to develop a severe astigmatism.
03:54So she ended up with very thick glasses.
03:58And she had a kind of a lumpy, dumpy body.
04:01So as she's growing up, she doesn't look so attractive anymore.
04:06In 1957, when Carol was 14, her mother suffered a fatal heart attack.
04:13After the death of her mother, Bundy began to be sexually abused by her father.
04:19So she has this very ingrained idea about what she should be as a woman.
04:25She should be subservient to a man.
04:30At the age of 17, Bundy married a man almost 40 years her senior.
04:36The marriage didn't last.
04:38And during the 1960s, Bundy married a further two times and had two sons.
04:44But all of these relationships proved unstable and never lasted long.
04:50Some of these marriages were abusive.
04:52She was abused by the people that should have been caring for her.
04:56So she's constantly learning.
04:59She's constantly having that idea reinforced that women are there to serve men.
05:03By 1979, she was on her own again and a regular at the Little Nashville Bar in North Hollywood.
05:13It was here at Christmas she met 31-year-old Doug Clark.
05:19It was Christmas season.
05:21She didn't have anybody.
05:22And she was at the Little Nashville drinking.
05:26And that is when Doug Clark entered the bar, saw her.
05:31And she was an easy mark for a guy like him.
05:36Douglas Daniel Clark was born in Pennsylvania in 1948.
05:41He had a transient childhood.
05:44He had a privileged upbringing.
05:47His father was an officer in the Navy and then became an engineer, traveled around the world.
05:52As a result, Clark was sent to prestigious schools.
05:58I think the military connection is an interesting one because he's learned from an early age that aggression and violence
06:05is something that is valuable for his masculinity.
06:10To be honest, he's seen by his fellow pupils as arrogant, not prepared to work hard.
06:15And he also begins to have a bit of a reputation as a sort of sex addict.
06:22So he would invite girls back to his dorm room and he would audio record himself having sex with them.
06:28He wanted to humiliate these girls.
06:31So he shared these recordings with his friends.
06:33So he really got off on demeaning women.
06:36He really thought he had a right to do this.
06:40By the age of 20, Clark had left school and joined the Air Force.
06:45But after only two short years in the military, he was discharged and moved to Los Angeles.
06:52Here he settled down to a seemingly normal life.
06:56There's a concept compartmentalizing, being able to pass as normal when, in fact, you harbor very deviant, dark fantasies.
07:06He learned pretty early to hide that stuff until he found somebody who wouldn't judge him.
07:14By 1979, Clark was on the lookout for a partner who would indulge his sexual fantasies.
07:21On the 28th of December, he met 37-year-old licensed vocational nurse and mother of two, Carol Bundy.
07:31Bundy took Clark home pretty quickly.
07:34He apparently spent a lot of time pleasing her sexually.
07:39He pretended to like her boys.
07:41He himself acted like a little boy and won her heart.
07:45Literally after their first date, he's moving some of his stuff into her apartments.
07:51He really is making himself at home there.
07:54But she won't be looking at this thinking, whoa, this is going too quickly.
07:58She'll be looking at this thinking, this is great.
08:01The relationship was intense, but it wasn't long before Clark's behavior began to change.
08:08He began to have issues with the kids being there.
08:12And at this point, Bundy was all in.
08:15And she had to keep him, so she gave up her sons.
08:20She really wants to please him.
08:22She wants to be this standout woman for him.
08:25And I think there's also a sense in which Clark is exciting.
08:28He's the kind of character she's never met before.
08:31He's the extreme end of the spectrum.
08:35During the investigation, veteran homicide detective Frank Garcia
08:40built a disturbing picture of the pair's chaotic relationship.
08:45It didn't take long before he told her, this is really getting boring.
08:50So they started bringing in third parties.
08:53She would get prostitutes for him and have a threesome.
08:57But most of the time, she would get cut out of the action.
09:00It wasn't long before Clark's desires took a more sinister turn.
09:05They met an 11-year-old girl that lived across the breezeway of the apartment buildings.
09:10And Carol lured that 11-year-old over to the apartment.
09:13And it wasn't long before they were taking nude pictures, showers together.
09:19Doug was touching her and kissing her.
09:21It begins with presents and with gifts and making her feel included and wanted.
09:27Gradually, she begins to get involved with activities
09:30that probably did make her feel uncomfortable at first.
09:33But because she felt that sense of obligation to this couple,
09:37she would have gone along with it.
09:39She was a child who was exploited by them.
09:41He later drugged her and tried to rape her.
09:44So by the time that it reaches that level of violence, that level of abuse,
09:49this individual has been completely brainwashed by this couple,
09:54completely unable to reach out for help.
09:58Over the next six months, the depraved actions of Clark would continue to spiral out of control.
10:06After Clark moves in with Carol Bundy, he increasingly tries to sexualize her.
10:11He wants to introduce her to torture.
10:12He wants to introduce her to all manner of other things.
10:15But there's another extra potent thing in the mix.
10:19And that is that Clark says he wants to have sex with a dead body or bodies.
10:25Whether that offends Bundy, I'm not sure.
10:28But there's no doubt that necrophilia is now on his menu.
10:32What Bundy doesn't know, Clark is also trolling around looking for women that he wants to victimize.
10:40On the 27th of April, 1980, whilst driving the streets of Los Angeles,
10:4732-year-old Clark picked up a sex worker.
10:51When she was giving him oral sex, he began to choke her.
10:57With the intent of killing her, it was much more difficult for him than I think he anticipated.
11:02So he pulled out a knife and started to stab her and then slash her over and over and over.
11:09He was going to try to kill her and she pushed away, fought him and stuff.
11:14She was fighting for her life.
11:15She got out of the car somehow and she got away.
11:19Obsessed with his necrophiliac fantasies and determined that his next victim would not escape,
11:26Clark convinced Bundy to purchase two guns.
11:29Bundy went into a shop and got a set of .25 caliber Raven automatic handguns.
11:37Now Clark had a way to ensure whatever woman he picked up, if he wanted to kill her, he could.
11:45Trying to prove that she was a worthy partner,
11:49Besotted Bundy referred to the guns as the toys and started convincing Clark to take her into his confidence.
11:59So they have conversations about sexual fantasies and all of that kind of thing and the conversation turns to murder.
12:07Now you'd think that this would send her running in the other direction,
12:10but this is somebody who wants to please her man.
12:14She wants to be liked, she wants to be loved, she wants to be included.
12:17However, controlling Clark operated alone, and within four weeks of purchasing the guns,
12:25he was on the hunt for his next victim.
12:35In 1980, the bustling city of Los Angeles in California was facing an epidemic of murder.
12:43At this time, home to over 3 million people, with an average of 19 homicides a week,
12:50detectives were stretched thin across the city.
12:54On the 12th of June, the bodies of two young girls were discovered dumped by the freeway.
13:00Both victims had been partially stripped and shot in the head.
13:05They were identified as stepsisters, 15-year-old Gina Murano and 16-year-old Cynthia Chandler.
13:13They'd run away from home, essentially.
13:16They'd been kind of pushing the boundaries as teenagers.
13:20Their parents were having a bit of a nightmare, keeping them under control.
13:2532-year-old Doug Clark had convinced the sisters to get into his car whilst out trawling alone.
13:33He picked them up and he took them to some parking lot someplace,
13:37and he talked the blonde into performing oral sex on him.
13:41He told the brunette Gina to look away, and it was at that point that he shot Gina first,
13:49because she was looking away, and then he shot Cynthia.
13:52He sees all women as sex workers.
13:55These were just two teenage girls, and both of them ended up dying.
14:05Doug Clark had succeeded in fulfilling his depraved fantasy before taking the girls' bodies and dumping them on the freeway.
14:15Carol Bundy discovered what Clark had done.
14:19This is the point at which Bundy basically says, I want to be part of this with you, not just
14:27a fantasy life.
14:28If you're doing this, I want the full intimacy.
14:32I want us to be one mind, one soul, one body.
14:37Bundy is very much feeding off the kind of things that he's telling her.
14:41She really wants to please him, so she completely buys into this murder narrative.
14:48Detectives quickly identified the two girls who'd been reported missing by their worried parents.
14:55However, finding their killer was going to prove difficult in the teeming City of Angels.
15:02In 1980, in June, when the Clark Bundy case went down, we were at a pace to either tie or
15:09break a homicide record in the city of Los Angeles.
15:13That year, we had over 1,000 homicides.
15:16Law enforcement had the best of the best, but they were stretched to the limits.
15:22Serial killing teams, they have to be chameleons.
15:24They have to blend into the background.
15:26So nobody looking from the outside in would think that these two were capable of this.
15:32Desperate to prove that she was a worthy partner, 38-year-old Bundy put together a kill kit for the
15:40couple to use.
15:41Kill kit, it's just sort of a bag, certain items in it, the gun.
15:47She and Clark had matching guns, and a boning knife.
15:51She told 32-year-old Clark to use the knife to mutilate the bodies.
15:58As their relationship progresses, she wants to be this standout woman for him.
16:03She wants to go further than other women have gone with him.
16:06And she's almost trying to kind of shock him and say, look at me, aren't I dangerous and exciting?
16:14On the 20th of June, 1980, Clark took Bundy out with him on what was supposed to be her first
16:22kill.
16:23The MO was to go hunting for prostitutes, people that did not have family.
16:29Get a prostitute to enter the car on the guise of sex, kill, and utilize the bodies.
16:37If a serial killer wants a woman to get in his car, who gets in the car in the L
16:42.A. area?
16:43It's prostitutes.
16:46They pick up a sex worker on Highland Avenue, and the plan is that Bundy will shoot this woman.
16:53But if she doesn't want to go through with it, there'll be some kind of code phrase that she uses.
16:58But I think Bundy got so excited at this situation that it didn't go to plan whatsoever.
17:05Bundy didn't shoot this woman.
17:08Clark did.
17:09And there was a real kind of fumbled handover of the gun that was used to kill this woman.
17:15The victim, known only as Kathy, was stripped of clothes and belongings,
17:21anything which could help identify her, and dump beside a dirt track.
17:26Having failed to prove she was a worthy accomplice, Bundy was once again cut out of the action.
17:34Shortly after 3 a.m. on the 23rd of June, 1980, almost two weeks after the bodies of stepsisters
17:42Gina and Cynthia were discovered, detectives were called to another gruesome crime scene.
17:48The decapitated nude body of Exie Wilson showed up in the parking lot.
17:56Exie Wilson was a sex worker working the Ventura Boulevard in Los Angeles.
18:02Whilst out cruising alone, Clark picked her up.
18:06Clark takes Exie Wilson, gives her a lift in his car.
18:10He shoots her in the head.
18:13He takes her to a parking lot and cuts off her head, which he puts in the trunk of the
18:21car.
18:22And he dumps her headless torso in the parking lot.
18:27Doug Clark took the severed head home with him.
18:31So Clark tells Bundy that he has this head, and it's in the freezer.
18:37Now, he won't show it to Bundy immediately, because I think he gets that Bundy's quite excited about this.
18:43She's like a little child, essentially.
18:45He delays the length of time, you know, before she sees him.
18:49She spent a lot of time putting on makeup, lipstick, and making up the head.
18:53And I think Exie might have been more pretty than some of the other ones.
18:58He then takes the head into the shower with him, and allegedly sexually pleasures himself with the head.
19:05The same morning that Exie's headless body was discovered, investigators receive reports of yet another victim.
19:14That same morning, Karen Jones was discovered on the street near the Burbank Studios with a headshot.
19:21Now, Exie and Karen Jones were both prostitutes from Arkansas.
19:27They had come to Los Angeles together to work the Sunset Strip area.
19:32Clark was worried that Karen, who'd seen him with Exie, would identify him to the police.
19:39He goes back and entices Karen into the car, with the simple intention of killing her, too.
19:48Which he does, even though he's got Exie's head in the boot of the car.
19:53These are actions of the most extreme depravity.
19:57They defy any kind of moral ground.
20:01With the discovery of Karen Jones's body, detectives started to think these killings might be linked.
20:09They did the autopsy and Karen Jones, and at that point, it was kind of a feeling already.
20:15They took the slugs out of their head, and it was immediately sent to ballistics,
20:19and they got a match that the slugs and Karen Jones were the same as the two sisters, Gina and
20:26Cynthia.
20:27Now, we know we have a serial killer.
20:30All three victims had been shot with the same gun.
20:36One week later, on the 27th of June, 1980, Exie Wilson's head was discovered.
20:44Bundy went out and bought an ornate box.
20:47They wrapped the head in clothing, dumped it in the chest, put the chest into an alley.
20:53It was, I guess, four or five days later.
20:57The head was discovered by a motorist about one o'clock in the morning,
21:02and he hit this little wooden box that looked like a treasure chest.
21:07He got out, looked at it, and he saw that it was a human head.
21:11The head was positively identified as Exie Wilson.
21:17That head was taken immediately by the corner.
21:20The slugs were removed immediately to ballistics at the crime lab.
21:26That came back positively.
21:29So now you have a full-blown serial killing investigation.
21:35A depraved picture was starting to emerge surrounding these killings,
21:40and a new wave of terror flooded the streets of L.A.
21:44Local press coined the murderer the Sunset Strip Killer.
21:49In this particular case, we were thinking that it was just one killer
21:52responsible for all these killings.
21:55All the ballistics came back to the same gun.
21:58It was a .25-caliber Raven, semi-automatic.
22:01So in our mind, it was the same killer committing these crimes.
22:05With conclusive evidence they had a serial killer on the loose in L.A.,
22:10detectives started a task force dedicated to catching the Sunset Strip killer.
22:15Then, on the 30th of June, a snake hunter out in San Fernando
22:21found the body of another woman in a ravine just off the freeway.
22:26She'd been shot.
22:29She was decomposed, but they took one or two slugs out of her,
22:33and those slugs were a match to Marano, Chandler, Exie Wilson, Karen Jones,
22:41and Comer was the fifth one to have a match.
22:45The victim was identified as Marnette Comer.
22:49She was just 17 years old and was last seen on the 21st of May, 1980.
22:55It was Marnette's T-shirt that Exie Wilson's head was later found wrapped in.
23:01She was a vulnerable child, somebody who wasn't able to consent,
23:05and Clark can sniff out vulnerability.
23:08He is a predator.
23:10He knew that it would be really easy to get this young woman into his car
23:14and do with her whatever he wanted.
23:17Marnette had been Doug Clark's first victim.
23:20The discovery of her body over a month later came as a reminder
23:25to 37-year-old Bundy that she was not yet in on Clark's act.
23:30In a bid to take control, Carol Bundy would soon take matters into her own hands.
23:45During the summer of 1980, a serial killer dubbed the Sunset Strip Killer
23:52was on the loose in Los Angeles.
23:55With five victims conclusively linked to this callous individual,
23:59the police were desperate to catch the killer.
24:04On the 9th of August, another headless torso was discovered.
24:09This time, however, the victim was male.
24:14The murder of Jack Murray was one of the most brutal murders that I've encountered.
24:2045-year-old Jack Murray was a country and western singer
24:24who often performed at the Little Nashville in North Hollywood.
24:29He was also one of Carol Bundy's old flames.
24:33Jack Murray was known as the Australian Tom Jones.
24:37And although he was married, Jack Murray and Carol Bundy were having an affair.
24:45Carol and Jack met in early 1979, but the honeymoon period didn't last long.
24:52The following year, things turned sour.
24:56Jack got tired of her pestering him.
24:58And basically, it was the type of thing where Jack told Carol,
25:02don't bother me, I'll call you when I need you, type thing.
25:06Doug was over here.
25:07Carol would still go back to Jack, you know, off and on, off and on.
25:12On the 3rd of August, 1980, Bundy told Jack
25:16that she'd been helping her new boyfriend, Doug Clark,
25:20killed sex workers from the Sunset Strip.
25:23He didn't believe her.
25:25She showed him the guns.
25:27He said, oh my God, you're not kidding.
25:29Carol goes home, tells Doug what she had done.
25:32That's when Doug tells her, you're going to have to take care of Jack.
25:37Nobody really wants to go to jail for murder.
25:39So she realized also, oh gee, I really screwed up.
25:43What am I doing telling somebody that I'm involved in some murders?
25:46So she was going to solve that problem too.
25:49In the early hours of the 4th of August,
25:52Bundy went back to the little Nashville
25:54and lured Jack Murray away with the promise of sex.
26:00I think there's a sense in which he has that expectation of women anyway.
26:05Even this woman who's just confessed this horrendous crime to him.
26:08But that was to be the downfall of Jack.
26:13Murray owned a van.
26:15Carol Bundy took Jack Murray into the van
26:17on the guise that he would orally copulate her.
26:20And as he did this act, she shot him on the side of the head.
26:24And then she had to get rid of the bullet and the evidence.
26:29So she cut his head off.
26:31Five days later, his body was discovered.
26:34I wasn't there at the crime scene,
26:36but some of the people that we talked to afterwards said,
26:40you couldn't see through the glass because the flies were so thick.
26:43And that's what the neighbors reported, the smell.
26:47Well, that was Jack Murray.
26:48So when Jack's body was found
26:52and police questioned people in the bar,
26:56they mentioned that he had been seen with Carol Bundy.
27:01She was brought in and Doug Clark came with her.
27:05And she answered the questions.
27:08Yeah, she had seen him.
27:09They were friends.
27:10She didn't give anything away.
27:12But Doug Clark sweated and sweated.
27:17The fact that he goes along with her,
27:19that is an act of control.
27:21And I think the police will be quite well aware of that.
27:24And they're looking at this guy who's come in with her,
27:27and he has no reason to be agitated or sweating.
27:30So that's what gets their radar pinging,
27:33that perhaps he could have something to do with this too.
27:37With insufficient evidence to charge either Clark or Bundy,
27:41the police let the couple go,
27:43despite their mounting concerns.
27:46Carol was a basket case.
27:49It was getting to her.
27:52She went to work.
27:53She was a licensed vocational nurse at the hospital.
27:57She was having problems with her supervisor
27:59because her mind wasn't in the work.
28:01She feels horrible.
28:03She doesn't know what to do.
28:04She started telling coworkers
28:07what she and Clark had been doing together.
28:11She just wouldn't stop talking.
28:14They were shocked, horrified, and they called the police.
28:20By the time the detectives arrived, Bundy had fled.
28:24But later that morning, she called the LAPD herself.
28:30Some time back, you were having a series of murders
28:32involving prostitutes from Hollywood?
28:34Uh-huh.
28:35Okay.
28:35Would you like to have your man today?
28:37Yeah.
28:38I can give you your man today?
28:40Desperate to be taken seriously,
28:43Bundy started giving details
28:44only somebody involved in the murders
28:47could possibly have known.
28:49He was...
28:50Well, you don't know it because the head isn't there,
28:52but the head was decapitated.
28:54I did that.
28:55He was stabbed several times in the back.
28:58Doesn't that make you feel bad, though,
28:59that you killed somebody?
29:01Would you really like to know the honest truth?
29:03Well, sure.
29:03Okay, the honest truth is it's fun to kill people,
29:06and if I was allowed to run loose,
29:07I'd probably do it again.
29:11It really would seem to be quite bizarre behavior
29:14for somebody to drop themselves right in it like this,
29:17but here's somebody who wants to be validated,
29:20they want to be liked, they want to be recognized,
29:22and she literally can't contain herself.
29:24I'll be...
29:26There's a restaurant called The Grist Mill,
29:28which is in Burbank.
29:29I'll be there at 2 o'clock.
29:32My name is Carol Bundy.
29:34The center of attention at last,
29:36and determined to remain in control,
29:39Bundy arranged to meet detectives at a local restaurant.
29:43But before she got off the phone,
29:46officers following up on the earlier report
29:48from her work colleagues were knocking at her door.
29:51While Bundy hurriedly began grabbing items of evidence
29:55to take down to the police station with her.
29:59She has several pair of women's panties
30:02that she hands over and says,
30:04these belong to the victims of the Sunset Strip killer.
30:09She also shows them the photo album
30:14of the sex acts with the 11-year-old neighbor
30:17and admits that she killed Jack Murray,
30:22but says most of the murders were done by Doug Clark.
30:30Detective Frank Garcia conducted the initial interview with her
30:35once she was in custody.
30:37It was a typical police interview
30:39where you sit down, introductions, everything's nice,
30:43you know, how are you?
30:44Can we get you coffee, you have water?
30:46You know, that type of thing.
30:4737-year-old Carol Bundy appeared happy to discuss her crimes.
30:53She went into minute detail on her killing Jack Murray,
30:56how she had trouble cutting his head off,
30:58and all the other things she did to his body,
31:00because she told us she wanted to make it look like
31:02some sex pervert had killed him.
31:05I don't have any regrets over having done Jack.
31:09As far as Jack himself is concerned,
31:14she really got off coming,
31:16because he was dead before I did anything else to him.
31:18I remember hearing the tape recording
31:21of the entire confession,
31:25and I was a veteran prosecutor.
31:27I had many, many cases of the homicidal nature,
31:32and my chin hit the desk
31:35when I was hearing her statements.
31:38But her astounding confessions
31:41would continue to shock investigators.
31:44The frumpy nurse from Burbank, Los Angeles,
31:48wouldn't hold back on the details,
31:50and she would turn the tables on Doug Clark.
32:02In the summer of 1980,
32:04a sadistic serial murderer dubbed the Sunset Strip Killer
32:09had terrorized the streets of Los Angeles.
32:12Bodies of women and girls
32:14had been found sexually assaulted and mutilated.
32:17The headless torso of a country and western singer
32:21by the name of Jack Murray
32:23had also been discovered.
32:25On the 11th of August,
32:27detectives were stunned
32:29when 37-year-old Carol Bundy
32:31confessed to Jack's murder.
32:33But her shocking confessions didn't stop there.
32:37She also declared her boyfriend,
32:39Doug Clark,
32:40was the Sunset Strip Killer.
32:42It doesn't matter if they're prostitutes or whatever.
32:47These are young girls.
32:49If you can get them in the car,
32:51his criteria, believe it or not,
32:53for whether or not they die
32:54is whether or not they get a decent blowjob.
32:57With Doug Clark accused
32:59of being Bundy's partner in crime,
33:01a warrant was quickly issued for his arrest.
33:05But unlike Bundy,
33:07he wasn't going to admit anything.
33:09So Clark suggests that Bundy
33:12has completely set him up for this.
33:14He makes her out to be the mastermind,
33:18which is pretty incredulous.
33:20And the police will be very skeptical of this
33:22from the outset
33:23because they will be able to see
33:24that Bundy is clearly very easily influenced.
33:28So they know that, yes, she's the puppet,
33:31but that Clark is the puppet master.
33:34With both killers in custody,
33:37the city of Los Angeles could breathe
33:39a momentary sigh of relief.
33:43But Bundy's confession alone
33:45wasn't going to be enough to convict Doug Clark.
33:49After the arrest,
33:50we had obtained a search warrant
33:51for the garage that he had rented,
33:53which was in Burbank.
33:54We went to the location of the garage,
33:56I would say roughly 10.30, 11 o'clock that night.
34:00And the garage was small.
34:02It was very dusty.
34:03We lit it up and you could see with the lights
34:06that there was like drag marks
34:07on the smooth concrete surface of the floor there.
34:11The drag marks made sense to Frank.
34:14They fitted with an explanation
34:16that Bundy had provided.
34:18He took them bodily out of the car,
34:21put them in a rental garage that he had
34:23that had a single bed in there.
34:25And he used them sexually.
34:28Excuse me, you're talking about after death?
34:30After death.
34:31He pissed out on sexual activities
34:35with dead and dying people
34:36and they could feel it.
34:38The drag marks led to the corner of the garage,
34:43which coincided with what Carol had told Brodo
34:46and myself, that Doug had told her
34:49about taking the girls to the garage
34:50and placing them in these sexual positions.
34:53And apparently at one time,
34:55there was a mattress in that corner,
34:57which would have been the outline
34:59that was on the floor.
35:00The forensics team confirmed
35:02the drag marks were blood.
35:05We noticed there was a boot print.
35:07We asked the technician
35:09if there was something he could do about that.
35:11He said, if I lift the print,
35:12it'll destroy the blood that's under there.
35:16I said, we need that print.
35:18Detective Frank Garcia was convinced
35:21this was a vital piece of evidence.
35:23He was also convinced
35:25that boiler engineer Clark
35:27had hidden the murder weapons,
35:29the matching guns, at his place of work.
35:32Frank paid a visit
35:33to the Juergens manufacturing plant
35:36where Clark was employed.
35:37I talked to the manager of the plant
35:40and I said,
35:41here's what the deal is with that boiler.
35:43And the boiler is a huge thing.
35:46It's like two and a half, three stories tall.
35:48And we found out later
35:50that the temperature in that thing
35:51reaches like 4,000 degrees.
35:53But searching Clark's workplace
35:56was going to prove easier said than done.
36:00The manager said,
36:01it'll take a minimum of three days
36:02for that thing to cool off to work.
36:04It can be inspected or searched.
36:07Once that's done,
36:08it's going to take another three or four days
36:10to get it back online.
36:11We're looking at over a week.
36:13And I go,
36:14I suggest that you have somebody
36:16search that boiler room
36:18every nook and cranny
36:19because if his guns don't turn up,
36:23we're going to have to shut that boiler down.
36:26I don't think it was quite two days.
36:28We got a call
36:30and they said,
36:31hey, guess what?
36:32They found the guns.
36:33Things were looking up for Frank
36:35and the rest of the team.
36:37At around the same time
36:38as the guns were discovered,
36:40they made another important discovery.
36:43We're at Robbery Homicide
36:45in the squad room
36:47and they bring Doug Clark up.
36:49So we're sitting there talking and stuff
36:50and Doug,
36:52in this real cocky, arrogant way,
36:55puts his feet up on the desk
36:58and the stock of an eye go like this.
37:03It's the boot print
37:05on the boots he was wearing.
37:07We literally ran up to him,
37:09take your boots off.
37:11Forensics confirm Clark's boots
37:14matched the print lifted from the garage.
37:16With the evidence mounting up,
37:18both Clark and Bundy
37:20were charged with murder.
37:22Whilst awaiting trial,
37:2438-year-old Bundy
37:25underwent psychiatric assessments.
37:29John Stahlberg
37:30was the psychiatrist
37:31tasked with interviewing
37:33and building a rapport with her.
37:36I was court appointed
37:38and it was a confidential report
37:40only to be sent to her attorney.
37:43And the issues
37:44that he wanted addressed by me
37:46were whether she was competent
37:48to stand trial
37:49and the second one was
37:50whether she had
37:51a psychiatric defense
37:53such as insanity
37:54or diminished capacity
37:56which could have perhaps
37:57reduced the crime
37:58from first degree
37:59to second degree.
38:01The experienced clinician
38:02was shocked
38:03at Bundy's candid confessions.
38:07I remember her telling me
38:08she would pass him the gun.
38:09He'd reach back
38:10and she'd give him the revolver
38:12and then just when he was having
38:14an orgasm
38:15from the oral copulation,
38:17he would shoot
38:18the prostitute in the head.
38:19And I remember joking
38:20with Bundy that I said,
38:21he's got to be a good shot.
38:23I don't know the average man
38:24who would shoot that close
38:26to his crotch a gun, you know.
38:28But she laughed about that.
38:30John spent three hours
38:32assessing Carol Bundy.
38:34As far as any
38:35personality characteristics
38:37like psychopathic
38:38or dangerous
38:39or obviously antisocial
38:41in nature,
38:42no, she was quite passive
38:44and cooperative with me.
38:45She wasn't an obstructionistic
38:48or passive aggressive.
38:49She was actually probably
38:50pleased about the attention.
38:52Actually, now looking back.
38:54John concluded
38:56that Bundy was fit
38:57to stand trial
38:58and she did not have grounds
39:00for an insanity plea.
39:02She did not want
39:03to go to death row.
39:04I remember having
39:05that discussion with her.
39:09Bundy does a plea deal
39:11with the prosecutors
39:12in Los Angeles.
39:14In return for taking
39:15the death penalty
39:16off the table,
39:18she would plead guilty.
39:20But Bundy's damning confessions
39:22would still have a hand
39:24in Clark's fate.
39:26After two years
39:27of pre-trial hearings,
39:29his trial began
39:30on the 9th of October, 1982.
39:3434-year-old Clark
39:35was eager
39:36to represent himself
39:37and unexpectedly,
39:39the judge granted
39:40his request.
39:42When Clark acted
39:44as his own attorney,
39:45it shows me,
39:46number one,
39:47that he was very narcissistic,
39:49that I don't need
39:50an attorney,
39:51I can handle it.
39:52And this might be
39:53the main reason.
39:54He, of course,
39:55knew that Bundy
39:55was going to be
39:56the main witness
39:57and he thought
39:57that he would really
39:58give her a very,
40:00very bad time
40:00when she testified
40:01on the witness stand
40:02in front of the jury.
40:06The problem was
40:08he got angry.
40:09He yelled at the judge.
40:11He was vulgar.
40:13He slammed on tables.
40:15He was very dramatic
40:17to the point
40:18where they had
40:19to restrain him.
40:21You cannot represent
40:22yourself doing that.
40:25On the 28th of January, 1983,
40:30Doug Clark was found
40:31guilty of six murders.
40:33He was also convicted
40:35of sexual contact
40:36with human remains.
40:38He started yelling
40:40at the judge right away,
40:41just get to the sentence,
40:42get to the sentence.
40:43You know, I want to,
40:44I want to die.
40:46I want, I want it over with.
40:47The presiding judge,
40:50Mr. Ricardo Torres,
40:52sentenced Clark to death.
40:54I mean,
40:54if anybody deserves
40:56a death penalty,
40:57it's Doug Clark
40:58for what he did.
41:00Even after Bundy
41:02and Clark
41:02were safely locked up,
41:04the body count
41:05attributed
41:05to the deadly duo
41:07grew.
41:08In the spring of 1981,
41:10another body
41:11had been found
41:12in the Santa Clarita Valley.
41:14Bundy claimed
41:15this woman
41:16was the sex worker,
41:17Kathy,
41:18who she'd failed to kill
41:19on her first trip out
41:21with Clark.
41:22Oh, we had a hell of a time
41:24with, with, with Kathy.
41:25First of all,
41:26he was on the passenger's.
41:28Do you want the details
41:29of this or not?
41:29Absolutely.
41:30I'm not barring you,
41:31are you?
41:32Not at all.
41:32Okay.
41:33You have my,
41:34you've had attention,
41:35believe me.
41:35She got in the car
41:36and she said,
41:37you know,
41:38oh, first she said,
41:39my name's Kathy.
41:40And she says,
41:41pleased to meet you.
41:43Just like that.
41:44A little dumb little kid.
41:46Anyhow,
41:46she was kind of cute.
41:48Carol Bundy
41:49went into great detail
41:50about the encounter
41:52with Kathy.
41:53If I did not want
41:54to make the hit,
41:56I was giving him
41:57a particular statement.
41:59If I wanted to do the hit,
42:01I was to say,
42:02boy, am I having a blast.
42:05He had the ultimate decision
42:06whether or not
42:07to go ahead
42:08and do it one way
42:09or the other.
42:10We had a silent arguing
42:12back and forth
42:13between the two of us.
42:14Did he want me to do it?
42:15Did he want me to do it?
42:16He kept shaking his head,
42:17no.
42:17And she was getting uptight
42:18and finally he reached
42:19back his hand like that.
42:21So I took the gun
42:21and I strapped it in his hand.
42:23Clark shot Kathy,
42:24in the head.
42:26So I jumped out,
42:27ran up front
42:28and jumped into the seat
42:30and pushed her.
42:31Her head was in my lap.
42:33She bled up.
42:34It stuck cake
42:35all over my blouse.
42:36As the couple
42:37were driving around
42:38looking for a suitable spot
42:40to dispose of Kathy's body,
42:42Clark had more instructions
42:44for Bundy.
42:45All this time
42:47he's telling me,
42:48strip her, strip her down,
42:49take everything off.
42:50So I got all her jewelry off.
42:51Oh, you're doing this
42:52in front seat?
42:53Mm-hmm.
42:54Underneath the jacket.
42:55And if you don't think
42:56it isn't a bitch,
42:57get a dress off
42:58with a dead girl.
43:00She wasn't cooperating
43:01in the least bit.
43:03Anyway.
43:03On the 31st of May 1983,
43:08Carol Bundy
43:08was sentenced to life
43:10for Kathy's murder,
43:11despite claiming
43:12she hadn't pulled the trigger,
43:14and for the murder
43:16of Jack Murray.
43:17I think in Clark,
43:19she met somebody
43:20who was a master manipulator,
43:22who was able
43:22to make her feel
43:24loved and wanted
43:25and have that sense
43:26of belonging
43:27in those early stages
43:28of the relationship.
43:29And I think that was
43:30quite intoxicating for her
43:31because she was constantly
43:32trying to get back
43:33those feelings
43:34that she'd had
43:35in the early days.
43:36And if that meant killing,
43:37well, that meant killing.
43:39Bundy died in prison
43:41on the 9th of December,
43:432003, age 61.
43:47Carol Bundy
43:47was not very healthy.
43:49She was never going
43:50to survive prison
43:52in any event,
43:52and she did die in prison.
43:54So in a sense,
43:55she received the death penalty.
43:57If anyone deserved it,
43:59she deserved it.
44:01Doug Clark remains
44:02on death row
44:03in San Quentin State Prison.
44:06As a homicide detective,
44:08not a lot of things
44:09surprise you,
44:11astonish you,
44:12but these two guys,
44:14they were something else.
44:15Carol Bundy,
44:17was evil
44:18to the day she died.
44:20Douglas Clark
44:20is evil.
44:24Douglas Clark
44:25and Carol Bundy's
44:26chaotic partnership
44:28terrorized the streets
44:30of Los Angeles
44:30in the summer of 1980.
44:34Their depraved
44:35and deviant
44:36sexual fantasies
44:37knew no limits
44:39and saw them
44:40target vulnerable women,
44:42teenagers,
44:43and even a child.
44:45This makes them
44:47two of the world's
44:48most evil killers.
44:51Walk with us.
45:11Walk with us
45:13over thealled
45:14Or,
