Last month’s severe floods in Pahang exposed serious safety risks at the Gibbon Conservation Society Malaysia’s sanctuary after intense rainstorms raised river levels, disrupted operations and destroyed the only access bridge, temporarily stranding the gibbons.

Plans are now underway to relocate the affected gibbons to higher ground deeper in the jungle.

00:00My concern to be honest that night let's say the water reach until here or here then what if the
00:19water will bring Kayuba log and then it will wash away all the enclosure also so that's why we stand
00:27by with the evacuation plan that night it's scary for us here that live in the jungle and also near
00:33the river two rivers connected here. For Gibbon Conservation Society Malaysia founder Mariani
00:46Ramli last month's devastating floods in Pahang served as a final wake-up call she knows that if
00:52the society did not do something to resolve the flood woes their wildlife conservation work might
00:57face cessation she said the intense rainstorms caused water levels to rise to a dangerous level
01:03disrupting their daily operations and endangering both the Gibbons and caregivers the flood waters
01:10also destroyed the only access bridge to the rehabilitation zone located in the jungle leaving
01:15the Gibbons stranded this is the temporary bridge that we able to build the original layer actually
01:23you can see you can see only the frame left this is the frame for now this is the fastest thing that
01:30we can use to cross this river last time the water level reach here and it's it brought away all the
01:39bridge material and left with this metal structure eight Gibbons housed near the front of the zone were
01:47affected by the floods while another 10 deeper in the jungle on higher ground remained safe
01:53Mariani said the Rangers now rely on a temporary bamboo structure to access the rehabilitation area she
02:01added that they need to relocate the Gibbons to a higher ground and develop infrastructure that can
02:07withstand future floods we're going to relocate the these eight Gibbons to a higher elevation site deeper in
02:14the jungle and in order to do that we must build five large rehabilitation enclosure linked by medium
02:20size connecting enclosure at a higher elevation site relocating our Gibbons from their current flood
02:27vulnerable location to safety along with the floating bridge the enclosure design is going to be modular
02:34like we have now what we have now which means we can adapt it for socialization separate individuals
02:40during quarantine and expand as more rescues arrive the current damaged enclosures will be evaluated with
02:47usable structures upgraded and those beyond repair to be replaced without adequate safe enclosures Mariani
02:54said they have no choice but to turn away taking in more rescued Gibbons the big flood has gone down but
03:00the rain hasn't stopped completely and water levels are still sitting at medium height which means the
03:06forest floor stays soggy and the rivers keep running high with timely support Mariani hope to provide the
03:13Gibbons in her care with a safe and stable environment as they prepare to return to the wild
