After four years in the making, stage one of the M12 motorway is officially open. From fire engines to cars, western Sydney drivers took to the road for the first time early this morning. The new motorway links Western Sydney International Airport, which is set to open later this year.

00:07to officially drive on the new M12 motorway.
00:10Got to share a very special moment with having our historic fire engines, which dated from the 1940s up until

00:18drive along the M12 for the very first time.
00:24Opening the M12, it is a momentous event for Western Sydney,
00:28for Western Sydney International Airport as they prepare for flights this year and it will be the opening of the
00:35front door to the airport.
00:36The new road was far from busy on day one, taking commuters from Cecil Hills to an airport that's not
00:42yet in operation.
00:45The bike path that runs parallel to the new motorway at times garnered more excitement.
00:51It's great. It's so new. I feel like I'm in a new country.
00:57We're looking forward to the interchange connection, so all the way to the airport, so it's pretty good.

01:05The M12 is the first in a series of transport links to the airport.
01:09Five new bus routes will also be introduced in July, connecting areas like Oren Park, Campbelltown and Liverpool.
01:16It may be quiet on the M12 today, but it is expected to get much busier once the new airport

01:22With the Metro line to the International Terminal still under construction, this toll-free road will act as the main
01:28way in and out.
01:29The first passenger flights from Western Sydney International Airport are set to take off in October.
