00:30Just under 11,000 fans are at the Providence Civic Center while an estimated 400,000 fans
00:36bought the show on PPV. Our main event, a WrestleMania rematch as Stone Cold Steve Austin defends
00:41his WWF title against The Rock. There's a second WrestleMania rematch on the card as
00:46Mankind and The Big Show Paul White continue their rivalry, and we'll also see the aftermath
00:50of the D-Generation X fallout as former stablemates X-Pac and Triple H go one on one. Jim Ross,
00:56who's back on WWF PPV for the first time since Capital Carnage 98, informs us that the main
01:02event for the WWF Championship will now be a no holds barred match by decree of special referee
01:07Shane McMahon. Shane O'Max also ruled that if Austin lays a hand on him, the rattlesnake
01:12will lose his WWF title. So once again, the corporation sticks the deck against Stone Cold.
01:18Let's see if the inaugural Backlash PPV can right the wrongs of a lackluster WrestleMania from the
01:24previous month.
01:30We kick things off with a six-man tag team match pitting the Ministry of Darkness against the
01:35Brood. Despite helping the leader of the Ministry commit murder just last month, the Brood are no
01:40longer affiliated with the Undertaker's faction. This was due to Christian's treatment after he
01:44revealed the location of Stephanie McMahon a few weeks ago on Raw. The Ministry is represented by the
01:50trio of the Acolytes and Midian, and our spooky six-man slugfest kicks off with Midian and Christian
01:55having a staring contest as they lie on the mat before the former hog farmer takes the early
02:00advantage. Christian gets his head bounced off the turnbuckle before getting choked but he's able to
02:05use his quickness to drop Midian with a spinning wheel kick before applying an arm bar. Gangrel gets
02:10tagged in and he keeps the pressure on with a wrist lock but Midian's able to tag out following a
02:14thumb
02:14to the eye and a headbutt. Big Bradshaw gets kicked while going for a backdrop but because he's such
02:20a double hard bastard he no-sells it before delivering a big boot which floors Gangrel.
02:25Bradshaw goes to work in the corner with some stiff shots but he gets stopped in his tracks by our
02:29vampiric friend and his second rope back elbow. This doesn't keep Bradshaw down for long as he scores
02:34with a fall away slam but he does fall victim to edging Gangrel's double teaming following a blind tag.
02:39Karm is very quick these days as Edge suffers the same fate almost immediately as the acolytes go
02:45to work. Edge attempts a crucifix which is quite apt when you think about it and he connects with it
02:50following some assistance from Christian but it only gets a two count. Edge then hits a spinning wheel
02:55kick but he gets stopped in his tracks via a spinebuster from Farouk. The ministry continue to
03:00punish Edge both in and outside the ring, distracting both the referee and the other members of the brood to
03:06keep the advantage. Despite him being on the apron at the time, a loud Midian sucks chant breaks out which
03:12is harsh but not untrue. All the while the ministry continue to isolate Edge, culminating in a pay-per-view
03:18chinlock from Farouk, good man. Miraculously, Edge is able to fight out of wrestling's most devastating
03:23hold with a jawbreaker but Midian's able to prevent him from tagging in one of his brood team-mates.
03:28After taking even more punishment, Edge finally gets in some offence as he catches Midian with a boot to the
03:33face which is followed by a spear from the second rope. Finally, he's able to make the tag and
03:38Christian goes to work on Midian with right hands before scoring with a reverse DDT for a near fall.
03:43Things begin to break down as all six men make their way into the ring but the brood get the
03:48better of
03:48the exchange as both Edge and Christian hit assisted splashes in the corner before Christian connects
03:53with a tornado DDT for another two count. Christian and Bradshaw continue to fight in the ring as the
03:58other four men brawl on the outside, Christian stays inside the ropes to lay in a few mounted punches in
04:03the corner but that gets snuffed out by a ring shaking powerbomb from Big Bradshaw. Gangrel's just
04:09able to break up the resulting cover. The brood then try to steal it as Edge scores with a missile
04:14dropkick which leads to Christian getting another near fall. Christian then finds himself on the outside
04:20and our match comes to an end when Viscera makes an appearance to squash Christian against the ring
04:24apron before throwing him back inside for a clothesline from hell. Not a terrible match, especially
04:29when it picked up towards the end but the action slowed down a little too much throughout the middle
04:34portion of the match. Still, the ministry come out on top which can't make Mr McMahon all that happy.
04:45The Rock shone arriving backstage with Stone Cold Smoking Skull built. He clearly doesn't care much for
04:51the champion's property as he drags Austin's prized possession along the floor of the Providence Civic
04:56Centre. Speaking of damaged title belts, the Hardcore Championship set to be defended next as Hardcore
05:01Holly defends against Al Snow. These two have been intertwined for quite some time now, metaphorically
05:07speaking of course, and they're gonna hook it up once again on pay-per-view with old sparky plugs title
05:12at stake. Dr Def Steve Williams was supposed to be involved in this match as he had been involved in
05:17the
05:17rivalry between Snow and Holly over these past few weeks, but he was taken off TV in mid-April to
05:22rehab an injury. Say what you want about Al Snow, but he's proven to be one of the most overacts
05:28in
05:28the company for quite some time now, as evidenced by the ovation he gets as he and head make their
05:33way
05:34down to the ring. Al's desperate to win the Hardcore title, so Bastard Bob gets Al's face acquainted with
05:39the gold as he smacks him with it in the head. Al's actual head, nevermind. Despite an early flurry of
05:46offense, Bob gets sent over the top rope to the floor and Al goes on the attack. This doesn't last
05:51too long though as Al gets sent flying into the ring steps. Bobbo then goes under the ring and he
05:56pulls out a… jug of water? I mean, there's like tables and kendo sticks under there, but whatever.
06:01He bops Al in the noggin with that big ol' jug, so he made the right choice it seems. I
06:06guess that's why
06:07he's Hardcore Champion and I'm not. Al's been busted wide open, presumably from the belt shot at the
06:12beginning of the match, as the two fight over the barricade and into the crowd. Al's able to get
06:17the advantage out amongst the people of Providence as the two brawl back over the security rail to
06:22ringside. Al then delivers a slam on the floor before scoring with a moonsault off the barricade
06:27which gets him a 2. Snow goes under the ring to look for a weapon and he pulls out a
06:31hockey stick,
06:31that's a bit more like it. Bob gets whacked a few times before Al once again shows off his stick
06:36twirling abilities before proceeding to smack holly repeatedly with the remains of said hockey stick.
06:42Al goes under the ring again and he pulls out a table, remember what happened last time you did
06:46this on PPV good sir. Bob joins Al on the outside and he's met with a bacon tray to the
06:51head before
06:52the two fight up the entranceway where the hardcore champion hits a suplex on the concrete floor.
06:57The two continue their brawl all the way to the backstage area as is tradition at this point
07:02for these hardcore matches and Bob grabs a kitchen sink. Now, I know it's just to get the hitting
07:07each other with everything including the kitchen sink line but I have so many questions. Why is
07:13there just a random sink backstage? Who does it belong to? Is it a top mount sink or an under
07:18mount sink?
07:19I really need to know. Anyway, I don't get a chance to find out the answers to any of these
07:23hard pressing
07:24questions as Al spreads Bob with a hose and the sink smashes on the ground. The two then take turns
07:29throwing each other into some poor bastard's car before Al finds a broom which he breaks over the
07:33back of the champion. The fight then goes up a staircase next to some dumpsters and Al finds
07:38himself getting thrown into said dumpsters before Bob joins him. Not really doing the stereotype garbage
07:44wrestling thing any favours here but that is proper disgusting lads, get out of there and get a wash.
07:50The two then make their way inside a production truck before Bob gets thrown from the truck onto the
07:55roof of a car below and Al then drops an elbow but he only gets a 2. In fairness, that
08:00bump that Bob
08:01took looked like it hurt a lot. After stopping off at a few more parts of the backstage area,
08:06the two finally make their way down to ringside where Al grabs a couple of frying pans and he
08:10cracks Holly over the head. Al then places bombastic Bob on the table from earlier and he climbs to the
08:15top rope but Bob puts a stop to that nonsense and Al gets crotched. Remember that old wrestling adage
08:21that he who sets it up must go through it? Well, that's the case as Bob delivers a massive superplex
08:27to Al through the table. After the two men catch their breath on the mat for a minute, Al's able
08:32to crawl over the head and smack Bob right in the head with head. Just stay with me here before
08:37making
08:37the cover and picking up the win. We have a new hardcore champion here tonight at Backlash and yeah,
08:43a fun and silly encounter with some unique spots that hadn't been seen in these matches up until this
08:48point. The spots helped this one stand out against a lot of the hardcore matches the WWF were producing
08:54around this time, although it maybe was a little too long at over 15 minutes.
09:04The Undertaker's gathered his ministry backstage. He says that tonight's victory has gone some way to
09:10make up some members' recent failings and now they can look to the future and the arrival of the
09:16Hauer Power. For now though, the destruction and the tragedy shall begin tonight at Backlash.
09:27Next up is our second title match of the evening as Godfather defends the Intercontinental title
09:32against Goldust. Was this the tragedy that The Undertaker was talking about? The IC title's been
09:37hot potatoed quite a bit recently, changing three times in the last month with the Godfather picking
09:42up the gold on the April 12th edition of Raw. He defeated Goldust for the build, who himself only
09:48had a two week reign, and now the bizarre one has his rematch to attempt to reclaim the championship.
09:53Goldust makes his way to the ring accompanied by the blue mini who cuts his version of Sable's
09:58signature promo before treating us all to the grind, my word. The Godfather brings his ladies
10:03of the night down to the ring with him, much to the delight of fans in attendance. He tells the
10:08audience that it's once again time for everybody to come aboard the ho train and he reminds us all
10:12that maintaining a franchise of ladies to carry out after-arts activities is not quite as simple
10:18as we all may perceive. He tells Goldust that there'll be no holes for him as they apparently,
10:23and I quote, don't like scrubs, much to the annoyance of our golden friend. Goldust,
10:29clearly attempting to prove that he is in fact not a scrub, attacks the IC champion from behind but it
10:35backfires as the godfather delivers a backdrop and a couple of clotheslines before Goldust seeks the
10:40sanctuary of the ring ropes. However, when the challenger tries to deliver a backdrop of his own,
10:45he ends up getting his face driven into the canvas before getting thrown over the top rope and out
10:50to the floor. Meany tends to his, uh, mummy, who then decides that he's had enough and he wants to
10:56leave. That is until Meany reminds him that this match is for the intercontinental title. Goldust gets
11:01back in the ring but he's met with a scoop slam and a leg drop. Meany is able to grab
11:06the godfather's
11:06foot however and the challenger sends the champion over the top rope to the floor with a clothesline
11:11to the back. This allows that no good blue Meany to lay in a few cheap shots. Back in the
11:16ring,
11:16Goldust scores with a leap in clothesline for a two count before he decides to choke the godfather
11:20on the middle rope. Meany must have gotten his hands on Shawn Michaels' fanny pack earlier in the
11:25day as he hands Goldust a bag of powder before distracting the referee. Healed buffoonery ensues though
11:30as Godfather sends the powder flying into Goldust's eyes. In his blinded state, Goldust attacks Meany
11:36while thinking he's going after Godfather, culminating in the blue one getting his dream
11:41shattered. It's a blind kick to the dick ladies and gents. Godfather hits Goldust with a sidekick
11:46before going for a pin, the Meany inadvertently hits Goldust right in his golden globes while
11:51attempting to break up the pinfall and the godfather sends Meany into Goldust before delivering a
11:55whole train to both his adversaries. The IC champion hits a pin drop for the pin and the
12:00win, therefore retaining his intercontinental gold. A very short encounter for the IC title,
12:06but it was thoroughly entertaining for the crowd inside the civic center.
12:14Michael Cole grabs a word with the new hardcore champion who tells, uh,
12:18Todd that his victory tonight was a long time coming. However, Head seems to think differently
12:23is when Al covered Holly. Technically, Head was the one on top of Sparky Plug. Therefore,
12:29in Head's mind, Head is in fact the hardcore champion. Before this domestic dispute can rage on
12:35further, we go back to the ring for our next matchup. The New Age Outlaws take on Owen Hart and
12:40Jeff Jarrett,
12:40with the winners earning themselves a shot at the tag team titles. Debra looks… yeah,
12:46she's extra revealing tonight, let's put it that way. In all seriousness though, it must have been
12:51difficult for her to be told that she was going to have to go out in front of a live
12:54audience with
12:55thousands watching around the world on TV in little more than her underwear, so fair play to her,
13:01I know I couldn't do it but I don't get that many offers. Even Road Dogg's aware of this fact
13:06as he
13:06encourages Debra to show her puppies, but Jarrett and Owen intervene, much to the annoyance of the
13:11crowd, and the outlaws get jumped to start the match off. The bout eventually settles down to
13:15a one on one situation as Billy and Owen square off as the legal men. Owen takes the early advantage
13:20by bouncing Billy's head off the top turnbuckle, but Mr. Ass turns the tables with a dropkick and a
13:26military press slam. Road Dogg tags in and we see a dancey… kick? Yeah, let's go with that. Owen takes
13:32Road Dogg down with a neckbreaker before tagging in his partner and Jarrett hits a neckbreaker of his
13:37own. J-E-double-F then scores with a leapfrog body guillotine before strutting away in celebration.
13:42The fans are way more interested in Debra as they chant, show your puppies, bring back the
13:48attitude era, right guys? In the meantime, Roadie connects with his dancey punch and dancey knee,
13:53some miscommunication allows the outlaws to connect with a pair of dropkicks but a distraction from
13:58Double J on the outside allows Owen to drop Mr. Dogg with an enziguri. Roadie then takes a double
14:03clothesline and I have a sneaking suspicion we're about to fall into the regular outlaws tag team
14:08match formula. Another dropkick sends Road Dogg through the ropes to the outside but Billy's there
14:13to prevent his partner taking any further damage from Owen. Back inside the ring, Roadie gets choked
14:18out on the middle ropes before Jeff looks for a second leapfrog body guillotine but it backfires and
14:23Jarrett injures his BEA double Ls. Luckily for him though, Owen's there to drop Roadie with a
14:28clothesline from the apron before tagging in. Road Dogg's able to cover Owen but Jeff has the referee
14:33distracted, this allows Owen to regain control with a jumping leg lariat. Jarrett comes back in and he
14:38hits a power slam for a two count but a mid-ring collision causes both men to drop to the
14:43canvas,
14:43all while the fans continue with their request for puppies. Owen gets the tag and prevents Road
14:48Dogg from doing likewise before locking in a sleeper. Roadie's arm drops once, twice but not thrice as
14:54he fights his way out before applying one of his own. Owen quickly escapes and both men take each
14:59other out with a double clothesline. Both men tag out and Billy guns a house on fire as he takes
15:04out
15:04both his opponents before hitting a beautiful power slam on Jarrett for a near fall. The outlaws then lay
15:09into their opponents with mounted punches before Billy wipes out both himself and Jarrett with a
15:14clothesline over the top, Debra distracts Roadie which allows Owen to take advantage, Road Dogg counters
15:19and he connects with his pump-handled slam but Double J's there to break up the follow-up in
15:24attempt. Owen locks in the sharpshooter as Jeff tries to apply the figure 4 but Billy kicks Jeff
15:29out of the ring and he breaks Owen's submission hold with a Famouser and this is enough for the
15:33New Age Outlaws to pick up the win and the number 1 contendership for the tag team titles. As is
15:38the
15:38case with the outlaws, you know how their matches are gonna go and this one was no different,
15:42although having two tremendous talents in Owen and Jeff did help break up their usually monotonous
15:47structure and this made the match a lot more entertaining than many of the outlaws previous
15:51PPV outings. Michael Cole has a word with Shane McMahon and Cole reiterates the stipulations that are
16:02in place for tonight's WWF title match. Michael Cole then asks Shane how can he be an impartial official
16:08and if Austin pins rock tonight, can Shane guarantee that he'll count the fall? Shane says he isn't his
16:13father and that he doesn't make guarantees, he's Shane McMahon and he's running the show. He does
16:19say that he has something better than a guarantee though, he has his word and he gives his word in
16:24the name of his grandfather Vincent James McMahon that he will count the fall should that instance occur.
16:30On the subject of Vince, Shane says that he has no father and that Vince should stay out of his
16:35way tonight.
16:35Kevin Kelly's with Vince who says that while it's surreal that he isn't in charge tonight,
16:41he's taking care of his family and that's more important. Stephanie interjects and she says that
16:46Shane knows how much Vince's dad meant to him and Shane knows exactly what he was saying when he
16:51mentioned Vince Senior's name and Vince finishes things off when he says he knows Shane made a mistake
16:57on Raw and that tonight he hopes that Shane doesn't make an even bigger one.
17:01Up next we have the boiler room brawl between the Big Show and Mankind, we see the Big Show making
17:06his way to the boiler room and searching for his opponent but Mick's able to get the upper hand
17:10while the giant's back was turned. Foley breaks a broom over Big Show's back before slamming a door
17:14on the big man but show grabs Foley by the throat and he throws him repeatedly into a storage locker.
17:20Mankind then gets thrown over a table onto the concrete floor before show picks up that table and
17:24he hits Mick right on the head with it. A thumb to the eye gives Mick some momentary respite before
17:29he gets
17:29thrown into a refrigerator, show then looks for a big right hand but Foley moves and the big man
17:34punches that fridge. Mick then breaks multiple pieces of sheetrock over Big Show's head before
17:39looking to do the same with a trash can but show gets his foot up and kicks the weapon right
17:43back
17:44in Foley's face. Show then uses that trash can to wallop Mick across the back a few times, he then
17:49places Mick inside a shopping trolley and sends him flying into a wooden board and if that wasn't bad
17:54enough Mick then gets slammed on that same board and it looks like there was no give there whatsoever.
18:00Mankind gets thrown into another board but this time it falls on top of him and I don't think this
18:04one was planned as can be heard from Foley's reaction. Just as the Big Show's thinking of walking out the
18:10door to win the match, he turns around and he's greeted by Mankind smashing a pane of glass over
18:14the Big Show's head. Mick then gets a rickety old ladder and he looks to grab hold of a crane
18:19hook,
18:19but Show grabs Foley around the neck and he chokeslams him off the ladder through two tables
18:25with panes of glass lying on top of them. As good as this spot looked, Jesus Mick would you ever
18:31just
18:31calm down. Mankind miraculously makes his way back to his feet only to get a mop broken over his back
18:37before falling into yet more glass. Both men are now bleeding as the fight continues on and Mick then
18:42gets slammed onto a metal trolley. Show then wheels the trolley into yet more metal and once again Mick goes
18:49flying. Foley, in an act of desperation, breaks a pipe that sends steam into the big man's eyes
18:54and Mick then takes advantage with a low blow using that pipe. Show got hit in the pipe with a
19:00pipe.
19:00Mankind throws Big Show onto a table, causing more pipes to fall on the giant. With the Big Show now
19:06buried under the metal, Mankind crawls his way towards the door and he makes his way through it,
19:10but not before leaving his bloody handprint on the wall, I love it. Mankind wins the match but he's
19:16immediately ambushed by Test and the boss man. They throw Mick back into the boiler room and look to
19:21do more damage, but the Big Show rises from beneath those pipes and he makes the save for his opponent,
19:26chasing after the big boss man. Mankind grabs Socko from his tights and he shoves him right
19:31down the gullet of Test before crawling away. And you know, despite this only going around 7 minutes,
19:36they crammed a lot into that time and I found this one to be a thoroughly entertaining brawl,
19:41putting both guys over as legitimately tough men who could take a lot of punishment.
19:45It was a strange booking decision putting these two against each other after
19:49Show turned babyface at Wrestlemania, but nonetheless, this was a good boiler room brawl.
19:59Michael Cole's backstage with Triple H in China. China berates X-Pac, calling him an ungrateful
20:05punk who seems to have forgotten who got him over in the first place. She says there's a pecking order
20:10here and it's about time someone put X-Pac in his place. Hunter meanwhile says that he
20:15made X-Pac and tonight, he's gonna break him. Both China and Triple H turned their back on DX
20:21with Hemsley doing so at Wrestlemania, leading to Hunter and the 9th Wonder of the World becoming
20:25part of the corporation. Triple H and X-Pac would square off on the March 29th episode of Raw but
20:31the
20:31match ended in disqualification, so let's see if we can get a decisive winner here tonight at Backlash.
20:36One half of the tag team champions is out first but X-Pac looks like he's doing this all alone
20:41without his partner. Not only is Hemsley coming out with backup in the form of China, but he's
20:46also accompanied by some generic heel rock music as his entrance theme. My time, this certainly
20:52is not. I think this one's called Corporate Player and it's a pretty terrible theme in comparison to
20:58Hunter's later entrance songs. Triple H gets Puck fired up with a slap to the face and here we go,
21:04the two men exchange right hands before Puck drops Hunter with an inverted enziguri, forcing Trips to
21:09bail to the outside. Puck meets Hunter outside the ring and he drives his former stablemate's head into
21:14the ring steps before throwing him back inside the ropes, but Trips catches X-Pac with a shot to the
21:19midsection and now the former leader of DX takes control. He launches Puck out over the top rope
21:24and both X-Pac and China exchange words, daring each other to take a shot. Triple H takes advantage
21:30by bouncing Puck's head off the announce table and then the ring steps before keeping the advantage
21:34back inside the ring. A spinning heel kick from X-Pac does garner him a near fall and he follows
21:39this
21:39up with a spinning back kick in the corner, leaving Triple H in prime position for a Bronco Buster.
21:44Puck looks to set up for the move but China grabs his foot, this distracts Waltman long enough for
21:49Hunter to regain his bearings and move out of the Bronco Buster attempt. Puck holds his neck as a
21:54result of hitting his head on the turnbuckles and Hunter takes full advantage with a closed line.
21:59The referee signals that X-Pac's hurt, but Helmsley doesn't care and he continues his attack by
22:03dropping repeated elbows on the injured neck. China even gets in on the action as she delivers a
22:08shot while X-Pac's draped over the middle rope. Hunter lays in more shots to the back of the neck
22:13before
22:13delivering a swinging neckbreaker for a two count. He then locks in a long front facelock,
22:18applying yet more pressure to the neck of X-Pac, after which he drops his knee across the injured
22:23body part. Hunter then locks in a dragon sleeper as JR berates Hunter for the tactics he's chosen to
22:29employ throughout this matchup, all while praising X-Pac's heart and resiliency. Puck uses those traits
22:35to fight out of the submission but Triple H quickly regains control with a facebreaker knee smash before
22:40once again throwing X-Pac out to the floor. Hunter distracts the referee which allows China to drop
22:46Puck over the barricade and Hunter continues to target the neck when he drapes Puck across the
22:50apron and drives his elbow into it. Back in the ring, X-Pac's able to catch Helmsley with an inside
22:55cradle but he gets shut down once again with another clothesline before Hunter goes back to the front
23:01face lock before transitioning into a sleeper. The crowd are starting to lose interest in this one,
23:06it must be said, but X-Pac fights out and he applies a sleeper of his own. Hunter gets out
23:11with a back
23:11suplex. Both men get to their feet and X-Pac fires up with two spinning heel kicks and a jumping
23:16clothesline,
23:17he then heads up to the second rope and connects with the tornado DDT which only gets a two. China
23:22then
23:22gets up on the apron but her attempt at interference backfires as Puck counters a pedigree and he scores with
23:28a
23:28low blow while the referee's back was turned. Puck then gets sent out to the floor again, this time
23:33he's able to send trips into the ring steps. He then looks for a baseball slide but Hunter pulls
23:38the referee in the way and Mike Kiyota gets taken out. Back inside the ropes, X-Pac scores with the
23:43axe factor but there's no referee to make the count, how convenient, and the lack of a match official
23:48allows China to hit X-Pac with a low blow and a reverse DDT. Suddenly, the lights go out in
23:53the arena and
23:54here comes the big red machine Kane who himself had been double crossed by China in the not too distant
24:00past. Triple H gets sent for a ride with a chokeslam from Kane, Kane then sets his sights on
24:05China who suffers the same fate and Kane's interference here has gotten the biggest reaction of the match
24:10so far. Kane then sets both Triple H and China in the corner before taking his leave, allowing X-Pac
24:16to
24:16hit a pair of Bronco Busters to his former DX teammates but unfortunately for Waltman, he turns right
24:22into a waiting Triple H who delivers a pedigree for the pin and the win. I took a couple of
24:27things from this one,
24:28first of all, it was far far too long. At nearly 20 minutes, this was the longest match on the
24:34card,
24:34however, we do see the genesis of what Triple H matches would come to be in the near future right
24:40here.
24:40As for X-Pac, yes he did look valiant in fighting against the odds but the fact that he couldn't
24:46get the win despite Kane's help
24:47didn't really do him any favors at all. A perfectly serviceable match, but cutting 5 minutes off it would've made
24:53it a lot better.
25:00Our semi-main event features Kane Shamrock vs The Undertaker. Kenny Boy's become Vince McMahon's most trusted
25:06disciple as of late as it was he who was able to locate Vince's daughter Stephanie a few weeks ago
25:11on
25:11Raw following her abduction by the ministry. Undertaker then made things personal with Shamrock specifically after he abducted
25:17Kane's sister Ryan and he tied her to his symbol and because Kane didn't get any help throughout all this,
25:23the world's most dangerous man
25:24decided to leave team corporate. Shamrock's made it his mission to break the leg of The Undertaker, so let's see
25:30if he can accomplish that goal
25:31here tonight at Backlash. He wastes no time taking the fight to the dead man right at the opening bell,
25:36but the phenom shows off his power by
25:38tossing Shamrock into the corner by the throat. Taker then drops Shamrock with a clothesline while Paul Bearer berates
25:44the referee's count and the dead man then goes old school on Kenny Boy. Undertaker takes to the air again
25:50as he performs his leaping lariat but Kane avoids a big boot in the corner. The former UFC fighter begins
25:55to focus on The Undertaker's leg with a series of kicks before tying his legs up in the ropes. Taker
26:00turns it
26:01around with a big boot and a back suplex but Kenny Boy rolls through from a sunset flip and he
26:05locks in an e-bar.
26:06Shamrock continues to focus on The Undertaker's leg with more kicks and more submissions and just like
26:11the previous match, we have a pretty quiet audience for this one. The phenom eventually breaks out and
26:16he scores with a few strikes of his own. Shamrock blocks a hip toss attempt and he goes right back
26:21to work on the leg. After making it to the ropes, Taker roads to the outside but Shamrock's right there
26:26after him. Kenny Boy places the dead man's leg on the ring steps and stomps on the ankle before throwing
26:31his opponent back in the ring where he continues to kick the leg. Kick the leg under your leg.
26:37Taker does cause some separation by going to Shamrock's eyes before taking Ken down with a
26:41dropped toehold and delivering a number of punches but once again Shamrock counters and he locks in an
26:46arm bar. Again, The Undertaker goes to the outside and as Ken looks to attack from the apron,
26:51Taker catches him and he drives him into the ring post before introducing Ken's face to the steel steps.
26:56The dead man then hits a backbreaker before stretching Ken out across his knee and then he decides to
27:02switch things up with a bow and arrow lock. He then drops a big leg brother but Shamrock's able
27:07to roll through and once again he locks in a leg submission, that is until the dead man counters
27:12into a half boston crab. I do like technical wrestling as much as the next person but I share the
27:17sentiments of the people of providence right here and yeah I want to see some action as this one's been
27:22a real slog so far. Ken does try to get the crowd back into it with the hurricane rana which
27:27he
27:27transitions into the ankle lock, this gets quickly broken up and Shamrock gets dropped with a forearm.
27:33Taker then picks up Shamrock for a tombstone but Kenny boy slides down the back and he locks in the
27:37ankle lock once again. The dead man's in trouble but here comes Bradshaw with a baseball bat to cause a
27:42distraction. Kenny takes the acolyte out but he walks right into the waiting hands of The Undertaker.
27:47Taker picks Ken up for a chokeslam but Ken counters into an arm bar and yeah in fairness this did
27:53look
27:53pretty great. He has to once again release the hole due to a distraction, this time it's from Paul
27:58Bear but Shamrock does connect with the belly of the belly before looking to put Undertaker away
28:02with his own tombstone piledriver. However, Taker reverses the momentum and he plants Kenny boy with
28:08his signature move to score the pinfall win. Taker defeats Shamrock at backlash and I'm not really all
28:14that surprised. Following the bout, The Undertaker sets Bradshaw on Ken who delivers a powerbomb before
28:19choking Shamrock out with his baseball bat. This one was rough to get through. I understand that
28:25because of Ken's background, the WWFL compelled to incorporate a little MMA into his ring style
28:31but Ken's shown time and time again that he's capable of so much more than locking in endless
28:35leg grapevines and arm bars. Despite these two having one of the more prominent storylines going into
28:41this show, they vastly underdelivered to the point where I'd be happy to never see them square off
28:46again. A truly dull match right here at Backlash. Main event time as Stone Cold Steve Austin defends
28:57his WWF Championship against The Rock in a no holds barred match, with Shane McMahon as the special guest
29:03referee. Austin regained the WWF title last month at WrestleMania but he wasn't happy with carrying around
29:09the official WWF Championship belt. Instead, Austin wanted his custom smoking skull belt, a belt which
29:15Vince McMahon had stolen from Austin last year at Breakdown in Your House. Vince was so distracted
29:20by The Undertaker and the ministry that he told Shane to just go and give the smoking skull belt back
29:25to
29:25Austin to save him any more headaches, but Shane decided to go against his father's wishes and instead
29:30he gave the belt to the former champion, The Rock. Rocky held the belt hostage, he lured Austin to the
29:36Rudy
29:36Poo Bridge saying that if Stone Cold wants the piece of trash, he can come get the piece of trash.
29:42The
29:42two fought on the bridge, culminating in Austin falling into the water below, Rocky then threw
29:47Austin's belt into the river in an act that mirrored what Austin had done to The Rock's intercontinental
29:51belt back in late 1997. The next week on Raw, Rocky held a funeral service for the Rattlesnake where he
29:57revealed that he still had Austin's custom title belt. In response, Austin turned up to the arena in a
30:03monster truck and he proceeded to crush The Rock's brand new car, so good. Austin would reclaim his
30:09stolen property only to have Shane McMahon hit him over the head with a shovel to take the belt right
30:13back, so Austin's walking into backlash wanting to reclaim his title as WWF champion while also
30:19reclaiming his custom made title belt. JR reiterates that this will be a no holds barred contest and
30:24that if Austin lays a hand on Shane, then he will be immediately stripped of the WWF championship,
30:30and before the match, we see Vince putting Stephanie into a limo while telling the cops to keep their
30:35eyes peeled for the Undertaker. Vince says he'll be right back after this match is concluded.
30:41Our special referee makes his way down to the ring first, followed by the challenger who gets
30:45an incredible ovation. It shows just how much of a star Rocky was that even something as divisive as
30:51the smoke and skull belt still looks good over the shoulder of the Great One. Shane tells a crew
30:56member to wait until Austin's in the ring before taking the belt to Shane's office, so Austin's
31:01belt will not be at ringside throughout the matchup. The crowd goes ballistic as the WWF champion makes
31:07his way down to the ring, they've seriously woken up for this main event match. Austin's carrying the
31:12official WWF title belt but he doesn't seem to care for it too much as he launches it at the
31:17rock
31:17while sprinting down to the ring. The two men start exchanging right hands and here we go,
31:21the WWF title main event match is underway. Austin lays in the Rocky in the corner and Shane stops
31:32the rattlesnake from doing more damage as he reprimands the champion, a distraction that allows
31:37the challenger to take control by dropping Austin with a big right hand. We see our lackey taking the
31:42smoking skull belt away just as Austin lands a Luthez press, he fires away with some piston-like right
31:47hands before he drops a big elbow before making a cover and surprise surprise, Shane McMahon refuses
31:53to count. Rocky turns the tide with a swinging neckbreaker before getting in a few shots in the
31:58corner that sends Austin up and over the top rope. Rock runs through Austin with a clothesline on the
32:03concrete floor before dragging him up towards the side of the entranceway where he throws Austin into
32:08the security railing. Rocky then nails the champion with a fire extinguisher before flinging the champion
32:13into the entranceway, this causes the set to come crashing down much to the delight of fans inside
32:18the arena. Rocky continues the punishment by raining down more right hands on a prone rattlesnake before
32:23looking to deliver a suplex on the floor, Austin turns it around and it's the challenger who crashes
32:28on the concrete. Turnabouts fair play it seems as this time it's Rocky who gets sent into the entrance
32:34set and it once again comes tumbling down. Austin then nails Rocky in the head with an anvil case before
32:39hitting a clothesline on top of the following set and it seems he caught the side of his own head
32:44on
32:44the edge of the fence. Austin then chokes Rock with a cable before sending him flying into the
32:49steep guard rail, the champion then climbs into the tech area and he delivers a clothesline before
32:54finding a larger anvil case and wheeling it right into the head of the challenger. Rock counters a double
32:59x handle with a shot to the midsection before repaying the favour by sending that anvil case into Austin,
33:05the two then continue to battle around the entranceway before they finally make their way back towards
33:10but not before Austin throws Rock into the ring steps. Back inside the ring, Austin stomps away at
33:15Rocky in the corner but once again Shane pulls Austin away and the rattlesnake's becoming a tad
33:20frustrated by the actions of our guest referee. He's able to sidestep an oncoming Rock who gets sent
33:26flying over the top rope to the floor and he follows this up with a clothesline from the apron. The
33:31Spanish announce table then gets torn apart as the two men make their way on top of it. Austin looks
33:35for
33:36a piledriver but Rocky counters with a low blow and the champ then gets sent crashing through the table
33:40with a rock bottom. Rocky then jumps on the Spanish announce table to remind Austin and the viewers at
33:46home what his opinion is of the Texas rattlesnake before decking Austin with a few more right hands.
33:51Austin looks to grab a chair, Shane takes it away and he throws it at Rock, Austin stops the challenger
33:56from using the weapon, however he's not able to stop Rocky throwing him over the barricade and into the
34:01front row. Rock continues to lay the smackdown on Austin in the crowd including a clothesline and
34:07a low blow before Shane politely encourages Rocky to get the fight back in the ring. Austin gets
34:12thrown back the ringside and now he's on top of the English commentary table. Rock takes this
34:17opportunity to grab a camera before he joins Austin atop the table and we then get one of the most
34:22iconic
34:22moments of this whole Rock and Austin rivalry. Rocky points the camera at a downed rattlesnake while
34:28flipping him off and talking trash, he then pans to the crowd before he turns back to Austin.
34:33Stone cold's now standing right in front of the great one, double bird held aloft, and Austin delivers
34:38a stone cold stunner on the table, absolutely brilliant stuff. The two men eventually get back
34:43to their feet and find themselves back inside the ring. Austin looks for a stunner but Rock counters
34:48and he sends the champion crashing into Shane. JR screams that Austin taking out the referee was inadvertent
34:54all while Austin turns right into a rock bottom in the center of the ring. Shane places Rocky's arm
34:59over Austin, he makes the count but the champion's able to kick out it too. A frustrated Shane then
35:05grabs the WWF title belt and he looks to wipe Austin out, but his plan backfires as Austin moves out
35:10of
35:10the way and the Rock gets clobbered by mistake. This would turn out to be a very costly misstep for
35:16the
35:16corporation. Austin makes the cover, Shane counts, one, two, and then he flips the champion off before
35:23scurrying away out of the ring, bringing back memories from last year's Survivor Series. But unlike
35:28Survivor Series, Vince McMahon shows up with the smoking skull belt and he lays Shane out with it on
35:33the entranceway. Earl Hebner takes over referee duties and Rock gets a long two count from the new
35:38official. Rock then grabs the WWF title belt looking to deliver a kill shot, but Austin counters with a
35:44stunner in a tee he connects with gold right to the head of the great one. Stone Cold Steve Austin
35:49wins at backlash and he retains the WWF championship in the process. Austin celebrates in the ring and
35:56Vince even tosses the smoking skull belt back before taking his leave. The rattlesnake raises both belts
36:01above his head and the crowd goes absolutely wild. We then cut to the parking lot where the ministry
36:06approach Stephanie's limo. The cops tell the driver to step on it and get little miss McMahon out of here.
36:12Stephanie tells the driver to stop and wait for Vince, but…
36:18Where to, Stephanie?
36:21It's bloody wonderful stuff, I played this back at least 10 times. Back in the arena,
36:26Vince is completely unaware of what just happened as he watches Austin celebrate in the ring.
36:31Backlash fades to black and there you go, another pay per view of the Monday Night War completed.
36:42When people mention Backlash 1999 they usually say it's the show that Wrestlemania should have been,
36:47and while I do agree with that to a certain extent, I think this event only gets the praise it
36:52does
36:52because it's compared to what was a thoroughly underwhelming mania, you know? If we look at this
36:58pay per view on its own, it's nowhere near the WWF's best offering. Yes, the main event is fantastic
37:04and it tops the two men's Wrestlemania encounter, which was the only real standout on that card,
37:09but the rest of Backlash doesn't really have that much to make it standout. The hardcore title match
37:13was some silly fun and the Goldust vs Godfather match was ok, but the X-Pac vs Triple H match
37:19got
37:19bogged down with it's lengthy run time, the number one contendership tag match followed the usual New
37:25Age Outlaws formula and Undertaker vs Shamrock is one of the worst matches of the WWF pay per view
37:31calendar so far this year. Was it better than WCW's Spring Stampede? Honestly, I don't think it was.
37:38Apart from one match that you could skip, Spring Stampede arguably overdelivered and despite having a
37:43rough few months, it proved that WCW was still capable of putting on good events. Backlash has
37:48too many lulls for me to recommend the entire show, but if you're gonna check out just one match from
37:53this pay per view, it would have to be the main event. Join me on Thursday for reliving the war
37:58to
37:58see where The Undertaker took Stephanie, how Shane and The Rock are gonna respond to losing in the title
38:03rematch and how Vince is going to react to finding out his daughter was taken hostage right under his nose.
38:09Thank you all so much for watching another pay per view on this reliving the war journey and as always,
38:14take care.
38:17So
38:37we'll see you guys
38:58Gracias por ver el video.
