Iñaki Godoy reveals his "first" everything!
Transcript
00:00The first day on set for season two,
00:02it was actually a little bit chaotic
00:04because the very first thing that we shot
00:07was the scene of the Go and Mary going up reverse mountain.
00:12And they actually had to like put the Go and Mary
00:16into this like strange position
00:19so that it looked like it was going up the mountain
00:21and people were like falling
00:23and it was slippery and there was water.
00:25What's up, Team Vogue?
00:26This is Inaki Godoy and these are some of my firsts.
00:32The first piece of advice that Oda gave me.
00:36This advice wasn't specifically from Mr. Oda,
00:39but it was from someone very close to him.
00:41We were talking about Luffy's character
00:43and he mentioned Luffy was never meant to be relatable.
00:47And that is something that has stuck with me ever since.
00:51If you read the manga, there's not,
00:54as far as I'm concerned, I could be wrong,
00:56but as far as I know,
00:57there's no thought bubbles for Luffy's character.
01:00So you never really know what he's thinking.
01:03That is because he's not a character meant to be understood.
01:07No one can really aspire to be just like Luffy
01:10because he is just so optimistic.
01:15Nothing's going to stand in our way!
01:18Yeah!
01:20As an actor, that was very important to me
01:23because it made me go into scenes thinking
01:26he's not supposed to be like a normal human being.
01:30He's something else.
01:31And I think he has this very magnetic energy
01:34that is not supposed to be understood.
01:36It's not supposed to be comprehended.
01:39It's something that is supposed to just like amaze you and inspire you.
01:44So that was a very good piece of advice that I had.
01:47The first time that I really felt like Luffy,
01:48I think in season one,
01:50I was still figuring out a lot of things of what worked,
01:53what didn't work.
01:54But definitely on season two, something clicked.
01:57I feel very confident about my knowledge
02:00and interpretation of the character now.
02:02The scene where I put chopsticks inside my nose
02:06and I'm dancing with Chopper,
02:08that was a moment where I really felt like I nailed the character.
02:12Yeah, this is who he is.
02:14I took the manga, I read it,
02:18I picked my favorite frames,
02:21my favorite lines regarding Luffy
02:24that really, really stick with me.
02:26I then made this like PDF
02:29with like a big wish list of like,
02:32I really want to do this.
02:33I think this is important.
02:35I would love to consider this frame for this moment, right?
02:39As an actor, there's only so much you can do
02:42because filmmaking is teamwork.
02:44But what I did this time was,
02:47I really tried to protect my character
02:51and what I thought was the most meaningful for him.
02:56That was my way of giving a little extra effort this season.
03:01Just like really, really, really, really understanding the source material
03:05and actually like, you know, talk about it with the show runners
03:09and actually like, you know, make sure that the things that matter to me
03:12made it into the show.
03:13For example, like that one chopstick scene that I love,
03:17I saw that in the manga and I thought it was the funniest thing ever, right?
03:20And I had a conversation with my show runners,
03:22like I really, really want to have this moment
03:24because I think it shows Luffy's character,
03:27how he can be like, you know, so relaxed and so welcoming.
03:30And we added in the show, right?
03:32Or like when Luffy's doing that climb in Drum Island, right?
03:35Like it was very important to me that he didn't have like his coat on
03:38because he cares more about Nami than him, right?
03:41So it's like those little details.
03:43That's a crazy scene, but it's a very Luffy scene.
03:46I'm glad I did it.
03:47My face on international TV.
03:51Chopsticks inside my nose.
03:52That's me.
03:53I'm the guy.
03:54My first impression of the cast.
03:58They're fine.
03:59Nah, just kidding.
04:00Just kidding.
04:00No, they're great people.
04:01I love them so much.
04:02I was in South Africa.
04:03I met with them in the apartment building
04:06where we were staying for a long time in the lobby.
04:08I met with them before on Zoom other times,
04:10but the first time in person was in the, in the apartments.
04:14I remember one of the first thoughts I had when I met with them was,
04:17wow, I think, I think these people are going to become
04:21some of my closest friends.
04:22And they did.
04:23I was not wrong, but I definitely had that vibe from the beginning.
04:27What do we do outside of being on set?
04:29Well, sometimes we would like watch movies.
04:33Sometimes we will play board games.
04:35I used to play Catan with Makenyu a lot.
04:38Of course, I always won.
04:39Taz loves to do outdoor activities.
04:42He loves to hike.
04:43I never hiked with him because I'm, I guess, a bit more lazy.
04:49We also have this relationship at this point where like,
04:54you know, sometimes we don't do anything.
04:56Sometimes it's just like, you want to just come hang out and just like chill.
05:01So it's a really nice family dynamic.
05:04No pressure.
05:05We just do whatever we feel like doing on that day.
05:08My first day on set for season two, it was actually a little bit chaotic because the very first thing
05:14that we shot
05:14was the scene of the going Mary going up reverse mountain.
05:19And they actually had to like put the going Mary into this like strange position so that it looked like
05:27it was going up the mountain and people were like falling and it was slippery and there was water.
05:32I was on top of the going Mary's head.
05:35It was a little bit scary, but it was a great way to let us know what type of season
05:41we were about to embark on.
05:43One of the first props I remember holding on set, that is a very interesting question.
05:48I mean, it's gotta be, it's gotta be Luffy's hat, right?
05:51Of course, Luffy's hat.
05:52I had it on my head.
05:53I put it on my head.
05:55That felt really cool.
05:56I don't think I felt like Luffy at that time because I was still like super nervous about like,
06:01Oh my God, like we're going to do like one piece.
06:04Like I'm hope I'm doing this right.
06:06But it felt nice to have that hat and see it on me and feel like everything was coming together
06:11at last.
06:12Favorite prop.
06:13I mean, it has to be like those nail phones, right?
06:16They're crazy.
06:17Have you seen them?
06:18Of course you've seen them.
06:19Like they're like disgusting, but they're cute and they're like weird and they speak and they're like slimy.
06:27I don't know.
06:28I've never seen anything like it before.
06:30I would like to have one of them as a pet.
06:32They're fantastic.
06:33I like those.
06:33I think Luffy's fruit is really convenient because stretching, you know, it's a great power for daily life.
06:40There's like a cup of coffee there.
06:41You can just like take it.
06:42But if I couldn't pick Luffy's fruit, I've had to go with Robins because like,
06:47imagine having all of these different hands.
06:49You could do so much with them.
06:52Like you can like be typing on a computer.
06:53You can be like playing ping pong there.
06:55You could be like fixing your hair.
06:58So I think probably Robins Miss All Sundays fruit.
07:04Yeah.
07:04I like that.
07:04First time I saw the Go and Mary, I was like, whoa, that's a huge ship.
07:08I want to ride it.
07:10I want to go on it.
07:11And that's what we did.
07:12We went inside the Go and Mary.
07:14I'm not sure if we were allowed to do that for safety reasons, but we went inside.
07:20It was really fun and I felt like a little kid and it was very magical.
07:24I remember this one stunt.
07:27There's this moment where me and Nami were like stealing this safe and we ended up like flying
07:33in the sky and they actually like hung us on some wires, like me and Emily.
07:39Like we didn't really know each other that well at that point.
07:43And we're just like meters above.
07:45Right.
07:46And we're just like looking down.
07:48I'm just looking at her and it's like, well, this is our life now.
07:50And yeah, that was a, that was a crazy stunt.
07:52It was like, it was like bungee jumping.
07:54I actually learned how to do like a few moves for season two.
07:58I learned how to do a backflip.
07:59I learned how to do an aerial.
08:01The funniest thing about all of this is that, um,
08:04I actually didn't end up doing a backflip in the show at all.
08:07It turns out it, it's actually pretty hard to do a backflip in a show.
08:11And hey, I'm not maybe in the future, but being honest with you,
08:15I put all of this time trying to learn a backflip because I wanted to do it like in a
08:20stunt scene,
08:21but I'm, I'm still not on that level guys.
08:23I'm sorry.
08:24I'm trying my best, but I learned how to do a flip and, uh,
08:27I didn't use it in the show, but I, I used it at parties.
08:30That's cool.
08:31I did an aerial in the show that I actually did.
08:34I hope they didn't cut it, but I actually, I did do an aerial in the show.
08:38That's a cool thing that I did.
08:39So when I'm fighting wobble, I, I had this move where I do an aerial,
08:44but I don't know guys, like in the editing room, they change stuff and whatever.
08:49So I hope it's there.
08:51I hope you can see it.
08:53I, I can do one, you know?
08:55The other animus I've seen besides One Piece are Death Note and Attackin' Titan.
09:00I'm not sure if there's like very inspiring people in those animus.
09:05I'm just gonna go for Psyduck from Pokemon.
09:07I think that Pokemon is quite inspiring.
09:10He represents me well.
09:11I really like Zuko from Avatar.
09:13I think he has a great character arc.
09:16Actually fun thing, but I started watching the animation after I went to the premiere
09:21for the live action Avatar.
09:23I really, really, really, really fell in love with it.
09:26I think it's a really cool story.
09:29I think it's one of the best shows I've seen in my life.
09:33And yeah, Zuko is one of my favorite characters from that show.
09:36First time watching the One Piece anime, I was doing my research for the live action.
09:40I quickly realized that Luffy was gonna be a character that I couldn't tone down
09:48because so much of his personality is being just this like crazy goofball.
09:56He just had this like magnetic energy, you know?
09:59And don't get me wrong, Luffy's a very complex character.
10:02He has a lot of layers to him, but at least I realized soon that the first impression
10:07that I had to give of Luffy was like, this guy is unlike anything I've seen before.
10:14You know, when I saw him fighting Elvita on the anime, I got those vibes of like,
10:19oh, like he is like your classic anime protagonist.
10:25Optimistic, fun.
10:26First time watching the live action, it was a very sweet moment.
10:29I think we all felt very proud.
10:30We were all a little bit nervous because we didn't know what was gonna happen.
10:34But, you know, regardless of, you know, what people thought,
10:38we already found like so many like good friends and experiences from this.
10:45So we all just felt very grateful and very excited to like enjoy it together.
10:49I'm thinking about it.
10:51I think, I think the first time I really felt the anime community's love,
10:55when they announced me as Luffy and I started seeing all of these different fan arcs of people,
11:01like drawing me in character, I could feel like, oh, like One Piece is something that
11:07it really means a lot to them.
11:10They took time to make a drawing.
11:12And not only that, they have enough faith in me to do something good because they drew me as Luffy.
11:18I think that was the first time where I felt that love and it inspired me a lot to do
11:24my best.
11:25So yeah, thank you.
11:26I actually, a lot of the fan arts, I had them as wallpapers on my phone for some time.
11:32So yeah, yeah, it was very inspiring.
11:35I used to train with McKenny for like two months to get in shape.
11:39I had like this one shirtless scene.
11:41And of course we know that I had to have like my cool shirtless scene, right?
11:45Like I got, I had to do it, right?
11:47So like I got, I got into training with him to have like a more like anime like body.
11:51And you know, it actually turned out pretty cool.
11:54Besides that, I did some like acrobatics training for my character.
11:58At the end, I didn't end up using as much as I thought I would,
12:01but I learned a few cool tricks and maybe in the future I can get better.
12:05But mainly the preparation that I did was just really, really understanding the source material
12:12and to adapt it and protect it.
12:15And in any adaptation, that's the key word source material.
12:18Yeah, for me at least.
12:20Thank you so much, Team Vogue, for having me.
12:22I'm Iñaki Godoy and these were my firsts.
12:24See ya, gracias por todo, adios!
