BMitch and JP discuss how new Commanders tight end Chig Okonkwo can thrive with Jayden Daniels in David Blough's offense.
Transcript
00:00Chig Okonkwo spoke with the Washington media yesterday.
00:03I think there's a lot of excitement for Chig.
00:06He had an interview with Grant and Danny yesterday that I listened to
00:08that I really enjoyed.
00:11But I thought this one made a lot of sense.
00:14Chig made a point to talk about talking to David Blau and David Rye,
00:19kind of about what his role would be.
00:21Rye obviously was the tight ends coach,
00:23has been elevated to pass game coordinator.
00:25David Blau is now your offensive coordinator, play caller.
00:28And I thought Chig's comments were really pretty interesting.
00:34Let's hear him.
00:35Seeing the places he's been, seeing the power to offense he's been in.
00:38He's already shown me that and shown me a lot of clips from other days.
00:42Places have been like Detroit, just watching all their clips
00:44and seeing the offense that they're trying to bring over here.
00:48I mean, the way I see myself fitting in, exactly the roles that he showed me,
00:53like everything, just watching guys with so much space
00:56and just able to just use my skill set, you know, to my advantage,
01:00like fully to my advantage and just use my speed, my quickness,
01:04like actually run, you know, actually run real routes on the field
01:06and be able to help the quarterback, you know, be in the right position,
01:10right place all that time, have good hands for him.
01:12And then the thing about me, it's the yak.
01:16Y'all know about the yak.
01:18Like I can get the ball anywhere on the field and make something happen.
01:21Off that yak.
01:23I like a tight end of things like that.
01:25Totally.
01:25He got to think about just catching it.
01:27Like you see sometimes they catch and they look to get tackled.
01:31He catch and look to make some room.
01:33Well, and I am not here to besmirch Zach Ertz.
01:38He was really good for Washington.
01:39No, no.
01:40Elite get off at the line of scrimmage.
01:42Really, really good job of being able to find soft spots.
01:45He's a power forward.
01:47He knew how to use his body.
01:48Totally.
01:49Yeah.
01:49But the version of Ertz that was here the last two seasons was no longer a yak guy.
01:53Yeah.
01:54He was just further along in his career.
01:57Okonkwo absolutely is a yak guy.
01:59And he was talking there about David Blau's offense.
02:04At least in the Grant and Danny interview,
02:07Okonkwo wasn't shy about throwing a little shade towards the Titans,
02:10about the various offenses and quarterbacks he was teamed up with.
02:13He seems quite excited to be teamed up with Jaden Daniels.
02:16I don't blame him.
02:17But he mentioned Ben Johnson.
02:19He mentioned David Blau kind of wanting to run a Ben Johnson-style offense.
02:22It's just a pro-style offense.
02:24We don't have to attribute it to Ben Johnson.
02:26These offenses have been run for some time.
02:28Obviously, Washington was running a very unique offense.
02:32There's one dude that runs the Kingsbury offense in his club.
02:35Yeah.
02:37So, just looking at the past two years of this past season with the Bears,
02:44Ben Johnson's obviously the head coach.
02:46They went 11-6.
02:47Got some good play from Caleb Williams.
02:50You know what's crazy?
02:52All the excitement around Caleb Williams.
02:54Do you know what his completion percentage was last year?
02:56Yeah, it was like 57%.
02:5858.
02:58Sub-60.
02:59Yeah.
03:00It's pretty astonishing.
03:01Yeah.
03:01Now, he's the guy that goes deep.
03:02You know, Jay, like, people, the way he plays,
03:06he's not going to have a hypocrite.
03:08Because he takes shots.
03:09Yeah.
03:09He's not just a check-it-down guy.
03:11Yeah.
03:11Which I understand and agree, what you're saying there.
03:14Do you know who the leading receiver was for the Bears last year?
03:17Luther Burden came on late.
03:19They had DJ Moore.
03:20It was Colston Loveland, a rookie tight end.
03:23He caught 58 passes for 713 yards and six touchdowns.
03:28Another tight end, Cole Komet, the veteran that had been in Chicago,
03:32had 30 catches for 347 yards with two touchdowns.
03:36Tight ends are involved in this offense.
03:38Oh, they're involved.
03:38Big time.
03:39Go back.
03:39And a tight end that can run, it's going to have opportunities.
03:44Go back to 2024.
03:46Ben Johnson, Colin, plays in Detroit.
03:49Amon Ra is a monster.
03:51Amon Ra was the leading receiver there.
03:53Do you know how many catches he had, 24, when Detroit went 15-2?
03:56Close to 100?
03:58115.
03:58Dang.
04:02115 catches and 80 of them were for first downs.
04:07But the second leading receiver in Detroit that season, 60 catches, 726 yards,
04:13seven touchdowns, Sam Laporta.
04:15Okay.
04:16I'll go back one more year just to give a little bit larger of a sample.
04:20The Lions went 12-5 that season.
04:22And that may have been Laporta's rookie year.
04:26I can't remember when he was drafted.
04:27But that year, again, Amon Ra, 119 catches.
04:31Good God.
04:311,500 yards.
04:33But Laporta had 86 catches for 889 yards in that offense.
04:38What do you think are reasonable expectations for a guy like Chig that has the size,
04:43the speed, the toughness?
04:46I think he could get about 70 receptions or more.
04:51And the fact that he can get yards after the catch,
04:55I think he'd be pushing 900 yards or more.
05:03If he does, that is a game changer.
05:08That's a new weapon right there.
05:10You know, like a tight end that can over the middle catch a little cross route about 8 yards
05:17and then can run another 10, 15 yards.
05:19He's a problem.
05:21And if he's running in man-to-man and you got a linebacker on him or,
05:25hell, even the safety.
05:27Chig can run away from him.
05:30So.
05:31I like that.
05:32I mean, if you look at last year in Washington,
05:41Ertz was their second leading receiver.
05:4350 catches for 504 yards with four touchdowns.
05:47Senate had 11 catches.
05:49John Bates had 11 catches.
05:51Debo was a leading receiver here last year.
05:55Chig, in his time in Tennessee, has been productive,
06:00but these were largely bad offenses.
06:03In four seasons, 56 catches, 52 catches, 54 catches.
06:08As a rookie, he didn't get as much playing time.
06:10Still 32 catches.
06:11Last year, he went 56 for 560 with two touchdowns.
06:17I mean, you're saying 900.
06:18I think you could easily say 700.
06:21You know what I mean?
06:21I think those numbers can be significantly larger.
06:24And I think that really gives this offense a new weapon.
06:33And I think for Jaden, it's a very different weapon than he's had.
06:38Ertz was really good.
06:39This is a different player at a different stage of his career.
06:42And I think adding a Conquo can make Jaden better in 2026.
06:50Yeah.
06:52Listen, we have seen how Jaden uses his tight ends.
07:01And if his tight end catches the ball like Zach was catching it
07:05and also can get extra yards,
07:07that tight end could be a major problem for somebody.
07:11You know what I mean?
07:13Because he goes to see, he was hitting the tight end a lot.
07:16So if he's going to be hitting the tight end and you have a guy with that ability,
07:21run after the catch, break a tackle, something of that nature,
07:23you could see some big plays from the tight end,
07:26which will open it up for the running game and also the receivers outside.
07:35Here's what we're going to do.
07:36I have a number of people taking me to task about wanting a cheeseburger on a Friday during Lent.
07:43It's a big, wide world out there.
07:45I think God's got plenty to worry about.
07:48Not necessarily my cheeseburger.
07:49You can't force your religion on everybody else.
07:51I mean, I'm not Catholic.
07:53So I eat meat on Fridays.
07:55So let's stop it.
07:59I am.
07:59The world is not just,
08:00but I'm just saying.
08:01I am, I just really want a cheeseburger.
08:03But when a person makes that comment,
08:04you're there to say everybody is like them.
08:07No, people have a right to do what they want to do.
