00:00What happens when emergency service workers find themselves in danger?
00:03These trainee firefighters are taught how to protect themselves from physical attacks.
00:16To document such dangerous situations, rescue workers are now required to wear body cameras.
00:22During the training, instructors Thomas Bierwagen and Marco Fren go out of their way to replicate potentially dangerous situations.
00:36Many emergency service trainees have already experienced difficult situations.
00:53Attacks on rescue workers are nothing new, but they appear to have become more widespread.
01:15However, records show that alcohol was involved with almost half of all violent incidents nationwide.
01:21What are the reasons for the attacks?
01:41The Berlin Fire Department is responding to more calls than ever, often because the homeless and victims of domestic violence
01:48have nowhere else to turn.
01:49For many, firefighters have become their last home.
01:52The German Interior Minister is calling for tougher penalties, but here people believe that the existing law is sufficient.
01:57It just needs to be applied more quickly.
02:07Though the figures in certain areas are high, some workers believe that tougher penalties are not the solution.
