00:01Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has pledged faster emergency response times as part of a major overhaul of policing, including the introduction of a national standard for answering 999 calls.
00:13She has also promised to move more officers out of back offices and out onto the streets.
00:18Under reforms, Mahmood will commit to cutting red tape and a necessary admin that she says stops officers spending more time on the beat.
00:26Police forces will be required to respond to emergencies within 15 minutes in urban areas and within 20 minutes in rural ones.
00:35Whilst most forces already aim to meet those targets, the Home Office says there is currently no way to hold them accountable if they fall short.
