Do the Patriots not need a true #1 WR?
Transcript
00:00It is possible, I guess, that he doesn't think you need one in order to be a successful NFL team.
00:07I'm sorry.
00:08Like, saying that if you just get talented players, the important things just take care of themselves?
00:12Like, no.
00:13That's not...
00:15Well, would you buy that there are only...
00:18The only half the teams truly have one?
00:21I could buy that.
00:23I could actually buy, like...
00:25So that means there's, like, 17 of them.
00:28Yeah, there's probably not many.
00:30Most teams are probably dealing with a bunch of 1Bs, 1Cs type of players.
00:34Urgency top five right now?
00:35Top of your head?
00:36All right.
00:37You're going to have A.J. Brown on there, I'm sure.
00:41I probably wouldn't have A.J. Brown top five.
00:43I'd have...
00:44Puka Nakua.
00:45Justin Jefferson, Puka Nakua, Jamar Chase.
00:48Jackson Smith and Jigba?
00:49Yep.
00:50Yeah, I'd probably go Jackson Smith and Jigba.
00:53That's a good one, Curtis.
00:55And then who would be that next guy?
00:59Would you have Jamar Chase?
01:01Yeah, I said Jamar Chase.
01:02Would you have my guy, Zay Flowers?
01:05Nah, I probably wouldn't have Zay Flowers up there.
01:08Amon Ross, A.J. Brown?
01:10Oh, C.D. Lamb, maybe?
01:11Oh, yeah, yeah.
01:11I was going to say C.D. Lamb, maybe.
01:13Yeah, C.D. Lamb.
01:13But it might even be less than that.
01:16Because think about that.
01:17We're talking about it.
01:18That's five.
01:18And if you want to go Amon Ross, St. Brown in there...
01:22Niko Collins is a legit number one.
01:24Wouldn't you say a true number one receiver is similar to a real ace in baseball?
01:29Not every team has one.
01:31Yeah.
01:31Like, there's about half the league.
01:32You've got about 15 of them that you can call an actual ace.
01:35Yeah, but the teams who do have them are never mad that they have them.
01:37Right.
01:38Right.
01:38Yeah, but, I mean, when you start to kind of look at that, it might even be less than half.
01:44Yeah.
01:44Because I know you say Niko Collins.
01:46I know he had the injury.
01:48He might have been on his way to that.
01:51I don't know.
01:51I mean, he had 15 games this year at 1,100 yards.
01:55Oh, Niko, I'm thinking of Tankdale, Niko Collins.
01:57But when I think of number one receiver, I think of somebody who's consistently did it
02:01for three, four years.
02:02Like, I think of Puka Nakua.
02:03I think of C.D. Lamb.
02:05I mean, to be fair, Niko has done it for two, which is as many as Niko Collins has done
02:08it for.
02:08Yeah, but I don't put those guys in the same...
02:10I wouldn't put Niko Collins up there.
02:12Yeah, I agree.
02:12I think Puka Nakua is better, but I think Niko Collins is, like, a legit number one receiver.
02:15But even if only half the teams have them, if you have a young quarterback,
02:18doesn't that have to play into it as well?
02:21It helps.
02:22Yeah, it definitely helps.
02:24So then, like, Elliott Wolfe saying that, I think, in my mind, is a cop-out.
02:29Like, I look at the Steelers, Wiggy.
02:31Like, DK Metcalf is a legit number one receiver.
02:34That offense is just not a good passing offense because Rodgers wasn't that good.
02:37Right.
02:37Rodgers wasn't that good, and I don't know how good Alex Smith was when it came to play call.
02:42And I think a lot of, you know, like, the number one receiver, we know, all right, these guys get
02:47talent.
02:47Like, you're right.
02:48DK Metcalf has talent.
02:50Then it becomes quarterback and your play caller.
02:54How does your quarterback do, and how does your play caller design place to get your number one receiver open?
03:00Right?
03:00Because if you don't have the best play caller, then, you know...
03:05How many true number one fullbacks would you say there are?
03:07We have them all.
03:08But on that, Greg, seriously, though, look at the six Patriots Super Bowls.
03:12Did any one of those teams have a number one wide receiver?
03:15Legit.
03:16No, but you had Brady.
03:18Okay.
03:18Yeah.
03:19God, you guys always want to talk Brady.
03:20So my thought was, you had Gronk in a couple of them, right?
03:23Yeah, you had the greatest tight end.
03:25Right.
03:25I'm not saying what the...
03:26I'm just saying specifically, we're talking about number one receivers.
03:30The Patriots won six Super Bowls without one.
03:33Yeah.
03:33But that's kind of like...
03:35Well, Wiggy, you love the...
03:37Everybody loves the flash of it.
03:39Yeah.
03:39Like, everybody loves the beauty of the deep ball.
03:44But this team doesn't even have a Julian Edelman, I think, is kind of...
03:47Like, Julian Edelman, he wasn't an elite number one receiver, but on this team, he was clear
03:52cut the number one actual wide receiver.
03:54When I look at the number one receiver...
03:57A lot of people think Romeo Dobbs is going to be that guy, Scheim.
04:01And there are more fans that I think that are happy with that signing than are disappointed
04:07in it.
04:08I think he's a good football player.
04:09I don't think he's going to be some stud.
04:12Like, this is a guy who's had his career high is, what, 750 yards a season?
04:16Last year.
04:1650-something catches?
04:18That's...
04:18In four years in the league?
04:20That's not a lot.
04:21He is a solid, good player.
04:24But when I think...
04:26When we talk number one receivers, and that's why I love when we have Ty Law in here, because
04:30a legit number one receiver is, where is this guy every time we step on the field from
04:37a defensive standpoint?
04:38We need to know where he is.
04:39We need to put our best player on him.
04:41Sometimes we might even have to double him.
04:43Yeah.
04:44Well, listen.
04:45We brought up CeeDee Lamb.
04:46Cowboys have him, and they're unable to be successful.
04:50They have a good quarterback.
04:51So it doesn't indicate automatically that you end up in a Super Bowl?
04:57But that would be like...
04:58And Greg, that's a great one to bring up, because good quarterback, really good receiver,
05:04but maybe the play caller is not the best in the business.
05:08But look at Mahomes.
05:09They won three, but only one with the number one receiver in Tyreek Hill.
05:12Right, but they also had a number one elite tight end.
05:16Like, Brady had Gronk.
05:18Right.
05:19I get it.
05:20I'm not arguing that they had Gronk and Kelsey.
05:23If you're going to tell me Drake May is going to be Brady or Mahomes, all right.
05:27But he's still going to need his Gronk or his Kelsey.
05:30And recently, you definitely have an argument, because Jackson Smith and Jigba, Seahawks,
05:34Super Bowl champions, the Eagles with all those receivers, and Devontae, whatever.
05:39I think the entire NFL is showing you that there's an argument between it, because the
05:42AFC is loaded with teams that don't have legit number one receivers, like the Bills,
05:46the Patriots, the Broncos, are all really good football teams without number ones.
05:51But then in the NFC, it's Jackson Smith and Jigba.
05:53It's Puka Nakua and Devontae Adams.
05:55It's A.J.
05:56Brown and Devontae Smith.
05:57Like, it is clearly a divide in the NFL between do you need them and do you not.
06:01And what do they say about those teams in the AFC, like especially the Bills now?
06:06Josh Allen can't do it all on his own.
06:08Yeah.
06:08He needs somebody.
06:09And they went out and got D.J. Moore.
06:11Right.
06:11But he did have an elite number one receiver, and he didn't win a Super Bowl.
06:14No, no.
06:14Well, that's true.
06:16Fair point.
06:16Who is he going against?
06:19Well, you keep changing the argument.
06:20He's going against Patrick Mahomes, right?
06:23Yeah, right.
06:24They were up with 13 seconds left.
06:25No, no.
06:25I understand that.
06:26And not to knock Josh Allen, but when you have Mahomes playing the way he was playing
06:33or Brady playing the way he was playing, it's very difficult to beat those guys, even if
06:37you have number one receivers.
06:38So, Elliott Wolfe saying that yesterday, is that negotiating?
06:43Like, is he negotiating when it comes to the Eagles, or is that him forecasting that you
06:50most likely are not going to have A.J. Brown on this football team?
06:53No, that's how you make yourself not look desperate.
06:55Okay.
06:56Right.
06:56All right.
06:57Because I would ask Elliott Wolfe, I would say to him, I mean, I think you feel like
07:03you're a Super Bowl contender and that kind of thing, but what would a guy like A.J.
07:07Brown do for your football team?
07:10Like a legit number one.
07:11Would you feel like he would put you over the hump?
07:14This is David in the car.
07:15David.
07:16All right.
07:19Wait, is that that David, or is that a different David?
07:21I don't know, but he's got us on hold.
07:23Uh-oh.
07:24Must have got another call.
07:24Those tones nowadays.
07:26Like, how do you even do that?
07:27I don't know how you do that.
07:29I think you can just-
07:30Some people, when you take another call, maybe it goes to that.
07:33Yeah.
07:33But I think on the new iPhones, like yours too, I think when you just hit the hold button-
07:38Automatically?
07:39I think it automatically just plays.
07:40Wow.
07:41But no, I got the four.
07:42Yeah, you got the first generation.
07:45Still works like it was brand new.
07:47It's like you're walking around with a rotary phone.
07:49And I keep getting offers to sell it on the black market.
07:52Yeah, those are going for a pricey-
07:54Yeah, they are.
07:57Yep.
07:58I think it has the best camera going, the iPhone 4.
08:013.
08:023.
