Mining and Energy Union members meeting about Tahmoor mine job losses, Friday March 13, 2026 at Tahmoor Sporting Complex. Video by Anna Warr
Transcript
00:07We've got our lawyers and ourselves who are right up to speed with the VEC process and the likes, so
00:15there's some questions that might be able to answer because they're EA specific about what the payments and the rest
00:21are. We'll run through that with you, okay?
00:24I've worked at the mine for 22 years. I was underground but I was currently working in the store. I
00:31got the email Wednesday night while I was at work that I'd been made redundant and it was a struggle
00:38to go to work the next day, that's for sure.
00:41I'm all over the place. Mixed so many emotions. My son phoned me this morning and asked if it was
00:50right and if I needed any money.
00:54That was hard for them to say that. I felt useless. I'm sure I'm a basket case but anyway, I
01:05have many moments. I just don't know what I'm going to do. That's the trouble.
01:11I've worked there, like I said, 22 years. I was a French polisher for 13 years and then worked to
01:16the mine and worked my way out as such and I enjoyed it there.
01:21But then, like I said, have it all snatched away from you. I just don't know what I'm going to
01:28do.
01:29So, the last 48 hours had to make some pretty tough decisions about my employment based on limited information.
01:38Today we had a union meeting just discussing what the outcomes are and what they could be depending if I
01:48decide just to leave or take the force redundancy or stay on for the six weeks with no pay.
01:56Just trying to understand the pros and cons of both and try and make an educated decision on what I
02:04need to do.
02:05I've been at the mine for 16 years and it's just a really disappointing situation.
02:10So, at the moment, I'm feeling more towards just taking the redundancy and trying to find alternate work in the
02:20interim with the hopes that Tarmall will start back up because it's the best place to have ever worked at.
02:26The guys that work there are absolutely fantastic and I really want to go back and work with my workmates
02:33that I have for over 15 years.
02:36My name's Gary Neville. I was a mechanical fitter at Tarmall Colliery. Worked there for 20 years.
02:43And I received notice Wednesday night, quarter past nine, that my employment had been terminated.
02:52And we were given not quite 48 hours to make the decision on whether to take unpaid leave, whether to
03:00accept the redundancy as it is.
03:04Very little time to seek advice from the union and our own families on what was going to be okay
03:11for us.
03:14It's devastating.
03:15thank you
03:15.
