00:02Biting the dust, another territory project in deep trouble.
00:07It's a mess and the information coming to us is really exposing some of the bad practices
00:11that have been in place out there obviously for some time.
00:14The Roper Bar iron ore mine, operated by Nathan River Resources,
00:19standing down more than 40 workers without pay since Good Friday.
00:24Some owed wages and superannuation, while contractors are hundreds of thousands of dollars out of pocket.
00:32This shouldn't happen to small businesses like ourselves and a lot of other people.
00:37Unions claiming a lack of regulation from the NT government.
00:41Nathan River Resources have applied for approvals for other iron ore mines in the area
00:46and before they go ahead they need a good look at this company.
00:50I should have shut it down to be honest with you.
00:53There's a lot of people that will probably be affected financially and mentally out of this I'd reckon.
00:59I think Nathan River Resources need to come out and explain to not only their contractors
01:04but to their employees what the situation is at Nathan River Resources.
01:10The government advised product from the mine now stuck at the nearby port.
01:15My understanding is that there's 90,000 tonnes of ore sitting at the port which hasn't been moved at this
01:22point.
01:22Environmental worries also raised by workers.
01:26The information we're getting about the pollution out there that's coming through now with this being exposed
01:31is an absolute concern and should be a concern for the government and the traditional owners of that area.
01:36Nathan River Resources has not responded to the ABC's questions but blamed the fuel crisis when standing down workers earlier
01:44this month.
01:45Unions and contractors say that's been used as an excuse and the company's problems go back a long way.
