00:07La visione è come ovviamente da l'originale, che ho visto quando ero 8, in 81.
00:16Actually, I might have seen it quando ero 9, perché in France things came later, quando
00:20I was young.
00:20So, anyway, I saw it, and I was absolutely marveled by the world that Desmond Davis and
00:28Ray Harry has created, because I'd seen it, that was the first movie with creatures that
00:33I didn't see Star Wars before.
00:35A lot of people, Star Wars, where they are like, you know, of my generation, where they're
00:38the Joe Dropper, but this was my Joe Dropper.
00:41So when Warner Brothers and when Legendary Pictures came to me and said, would you like to direct
00:48this movie?
00:49I just thought about it, because I was like, it's my classic, you know, it's like some people
00:52who said, would you like to remake Apocalypse Now, would you like to remake The Godfather?
00:56They would say, absolutely no, you're crazy, you're insane.
00:58So I said this, I said, actually, you're insane, you're crazy.
01:03Then I thought about it, and Basil, I wanted the producer, I kept calling out, I said, you
01:09really are a bastard, because I'm like thinking about it, and I'm loving it, and that's the
01:15movie I've always dreamt of directing.
01:17I love Greek mythology, I love creatures, I love ensemble cast, I love big adventures.
01:22And I was like, man, it won't be offered to me again, it won't be offered to me again.
01:29So I said, yes, let's do it.
01:31But let's do it under one condition, that we can make it so the original movie still holds,
01:37we don't remake, like frame frame the exact original movie, and we can, you know, sort
01:42of like walk in and jump into our movie in a different way.
01:46And the only way I did this was by finding my Perseus, Sam Worthington, that no one knew.
01:53I'd seen one of his movies, Somersault, and he was great in it, but absolutely not the
01:58guy, not the part.
01:59He was doing this weird little movie with a guy called James Cameron that no one had
02:04seen for 12 years.
02:05But like, no, but literally, it was a weird thing, it was like Avatar, I mean, two years
02:11ago, they had been shooting for three, four years, this movie in 3D with blue creatures,
02:16he was like, will it be good, won't it be good, that's really dangerous.
02:20With this guy, unknown Australian guy, well, you know, I knew he was good, because the movie
02:26that sent him in, he was actually good, but will he, is he an action star, is he?
02:29So anyway, I said, well, he's in LA, let's bring him in.
02:33I met with him and I fell in love with him in a very, you know, sort of like manly
02:37way,
02:37he's just like, hey, but you know, predator handshake, but we're just like, you know,
02:40so let's, let's really like, let's do it together.
02:45Because we talked about it and we just love the, we love the same sort of movies, the same
02:51stories, we love the same music, we're like, we're like brothers, man, we're like different,
02:58from opposite sides of the planet.
03:01So we just decided to do the same, we decided to tell the same story, which was dear to our
03:06heart, story of, in a way, story of rebellion, you know, story of growing up, story of acceptance,
03:13story of, you know, the humble hero, not the anti-hero, like, you know, sort of like, and
03:18Sam, I know, doesn't like this sort of like, you know, yes, I've got this hero with him,
03:21but just the guy that says, I'll try, I'll try because I believe in it, but not rejecting
03:28and says, no, I don't want to do it, oh, no, like fake unbelief, humble.
03:45Again, actors, only actors.
03:47Well, I mean, I had great screenplays.
03:50Travis Beacham had written a great screenplay, then Lawrence Kasdan had written one draft,
03:54and then two amazing screenwriters, Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi, that also I met through
03:59my great producers, Basil Almanek, and in Harris, they introduced me to these guys, and I was
04:04like, who are these guys?
04:05They walk in, and they're young, and I really like them, and then suddenly they come up with
04:11great jokes, and great action pieces, and great and serious, and the writing was fantastic,
04:16but that was just on the page.
04:18Then I went to London and started casting the movie, met tremendously funny actors, very
04:24emotional actors, I said.
04:26And even though the parts were not written, actually, for The Journeyman, the parts were
04:29not written, I said, bring them in, I want these guys, please accept to be in my movie,
04:33we'll write something for you.
04:34And we did like an enormous workshop session, three weeks long, which is, you know, unseen
04:39for these kind of movies.
04:40We were really going in, and going into the screenplay, and rewriting each other's parts,
04:44making jokes, finding the right tone, and that's actually where we found the tone.
