00:02Within months, widely used mouse and rat poisons are expected to be taken off retail shelves.
00:08New regulations are being introduced restricting the sale of anticoagulant rodenticides to people qualified to use them.
00:16The government will make a regulation that says these products can only be sold to people who are authorised by
00:22each state and territory.
00:24Those people then are the only people who will be able to use second generation anticoagulants.
00:29One of the main reasons for the change is to protect animals like these owls.
00:34Second generation anticoagulants are lethal for animals that eat rodents killed by poisons.
00:40So last night's announcement was fantastic.
00:43However, as happy as we are, the devil's going to be in the detail.
00:48They would prefer to see a total ban on anticoagulant poisons.
00:52So when something like an owl consumes those baited rats, they also eat that poison and it has the same
00:59impact on those.
01:00So it stops that clotting factor.
01:02It's just lethal.
01:04Farmers who need to control rodents are expected to be allowed to continue to use the poisons.
01:08There's a large number of farmers who already have to be certified to be able to access restricted chemical products.
01:18The new regulations will go to the Deputy Federal Minister for Agriculture for final approval.
01:23In the meantime, the regulator will work closely with state and territory authorities to decide how the new rules will
01:29be enforced.
01:30.
