00:02Why bother telling a story of somebody who's not, someone who's unremarkable?
00:07Someone who didn't do anything inspiring, wasn't Michelangelo or Walt Whitman or Roosevelt on the one hand,
00:17Lincoln on the one hand, on the other hand, Rasputin or Mao or Stalin.
00:23And on top of that, someone who led a life that wasn't exemplary, that wasn't, that was kind of pretty
00:31noble in a way.
00:32Not because they wanted to harm anybody per se, but because they had no real model for leading a decent
00:39life
00:39because this is what they learned from the world around them.
00:45So that's something that I've always been attracted to and interesting to me.
00:49Maybe someone like Jordan or Jake LaMotta or Tommy, Joe Pesci's character in Goodfellas.
00:55And people say, well, that type of person, that sort.
01:00But I guess what that means is that they try to distance themselves from them.
01:04It's someone else, it's not me.
01:06But in actuality, I feel it's not someone else, it's us.
01:10It's you and me.
01:11And maybe if we had been born under different circumstances,
01:16maybe we would have wound up making the same, exactly the same mistakes and choices
01:21and doing exactly the same things.
01:25Because I really think it's, when they say it's all, it's people of that kind,
01:30it's really not a matter of equalizing everyone and saying we're all responsible.
01:35I think it's a matter of facing and recognizing, acknowledging that part of us,
01:45which is a part of our common humanity, and we have to deal with it.
01:53He thought that he could bypass morality or surpass morality with a combination of money and drugs.
02:00I don't know, maybe he still does, I really don't know.
02:03I mean, it's another way of answering the question.
02:05He was different from Madoff and Skilling in that they weren't crashing helicopters
02:09or throwing little people, or maybe they were, but if they did, they kept it pretty quiet.
02:15But in that sense, Jordan's experiences are more entertaining.
02:20And that brings you closer to him, because you look at these guys and think,
02:24wow, this seems to be a lot of fun.
02:27Well, it doesn't just look that way.
02:29They really did have a lot of fun.
02:32In fact, that's really all they could do is have fun and more fun and more on top of that
02:38until it wasn't so much fun anymore.
02:40But what they couldn't do was just be.
02:44They just couldn't face that.
02:46So the challenge is to show that honestly, without tipping the scales into judgment
02:51and taking outside of the world these characters in the particular ways that they lived their lives,
02:56which was to obliterate all obstacles, all troubles, all difficulties,
03:01by taking more drugs, more money.
03:04Sex was not even a factor.
03:06Sex was just part of that, in a sense.
03:07So it's really drugs and money and power.
03:09It's aboutwang in which you are the mother of the Columbus.
03:09To heal the path they could feel.
03:13So this is a big concern.
