Former NFL GM Vinny Cerrato breaks down the process of how NFL teams handle physicals for players they want to acquire and why the Ravens don't deserve blame for their handling of the Maxx Crosby situation.
Transcript
00:00The dissolution, what is it, dissolvement of the Ravens-Max Crosby trade,
00:06which broke about 8 o'clock last night, 8.30.
00:09It was during the Terpski.
00:11Right after.
00:12I was on the treadmill.
00:14Matter of fact, when Hatchwack got your text, I was like,
00:16I heard about Ricard, et cetera, et cetera.
00:19But either way, trade's done.
00:21And the Ravens wanted to make it work.
00:24The old cheap trick song, I want you to want me.
00:30And I guess the Raiders still wanted those two first-round draft picks.
00:34And it was crazy.
00:36And Trey Hendrickson, we'll get to that,
00:38because that maybe absolves the Ravens of whatever blame they were about to get,
00:43which was going to be a lot.
00:45But in the course of five days, the Ravens went from getting Max Crosby,
00:51taking a bold swing, two first-round draft picks,
00:55and I was on board, you were on board, Nolan was on board.
00:58We were all on board with him.
01:00Turned out to be the SS Minnow, Gilligan's Island ship.
01:05They were on a deserted island for months and months and months.
01:08They lost all these free agents.
01:11And Ricard, Patrick Ricard, leaves to go to the Giants right before the Trey Hendrick,
01:18or excuse me, the Max Crosby news broke.
01:22So we have all of these things that are happening, but, hey, we still have Crosby.
01:27Yeah.
01:27It's all good.
01:29And then that came out.
01:31And then it was like, well, what the hell?
01:33Failed his physical.
01:36Agent saying things that he's convalescing well.
01:39Ella, Ella Trach, the surgeon, by way of Adam Schefter, he was on crutches last week
01:49and had the meniscus surgery two months ago.
01:55Now, I'm assuming that the Ravens knew all of this.
02:01So my question is, and we'll get to the good news, that what did you expect in the physical
02:11if you knew that he was literally on crutches a week ago?
02:15Well, here's kind of how it would be done.
02:21Because the Ravens, they did their due diligence.
02:26I'm guessing they had to get permission from the Raiders to talk to the doctor and everything.
02:33So they talked to the doctor, got the MRI, got the x-rays, got all that stuff, had it sent
02:39so they could look at it.
02:40All right?
02:41But it's nothing, you know, so you get a chance to look at the pictures, but you hadn't put
02:46your hands on the player yet, saw the player, done all that.
02:49And give your own MRIs, because those MRIs are from who knows when, you know, and you're
02:57doing updated ones right now.
02:59And what happens is, and Eric or none of the coaches, nobody's involved, but Crosby and
03:07the Ravens doctors, and they send them over to MRI, and then the Ravens doctors are looking
03:13at the MRI.
03:14Then they write a report, and they come up to Eric's office, and maybe Bashadi was there
03:20too.
03:20And then they give them their evaluation.
03:22They put a number on it.
03:23And we would all, I'm not sure what the Ravens numbers are, but ours were one to five, and
03:28five was a fail.
03:31And three minus was basically, you know, a pass.
03:34And we had a similar situation, Bob, with Malcolm Kelly, wide receiver out of Oklahoma, who our
03:40trainers gave a four because of knee.
03:43Same type of thing.
03:45You know, meniscus deal.
03:47And we went and worked him out.
03:49Our trainer, Bubba Tyre, we went to Oklahoma.
03:51He talked to the trainers, talked to Malcolm, did everything.
03:56And what came out of that was, okay, you can draft him, but he's going to be in the training
04:02room a lot, not going to be able to practice all the time, you know, and he may miss some
04:07time, you know?
04:08So do you still want to draft him?
04:10You know, so I'm guessing that Ravens doctors come back and they would have on this type
04:16of deal, Bob, they would have five as flunked a physical.
04:20So they would have a five for a grade slash.
04:24And the slash is when he's healthy, he would be a, and I'm guessing it'd be a, it was a
04:29four,
04:30you know?
04:31And it's like, okay, here's the thing is he's not going to be able to practice all the time.
04:37You know, he's going to have some time, miss practice.
04:40You maybe have him for two years and then who knows, you know?
04:44So then, you know, you get that meeting and they had just given the MRI and then you're
04:51saying to yourself, okay, Trey Hendrickson and they had been, you know, is still sitting
04:56out there and his numbers coming down because he hadn't gone yet.
05:00What would have been interesting, Bob, is if Hendrickson was gone, if he'd have went the
05:04first day, would he have, you know, so back to the, to the story.
05:09So then they're sitting around and saying, it's a lot to give up, you know, two first
05:16round picks and all this money when we can get Hendrickson at the same end, keep our draft
05:21picks, you know?
05:23So when you look at it that way, you know, so, you know, Aaron Rappaport, you know, said
05:28that, uh, you know, there's a lot of blame.
05:30There's no blame.
05:30They're just doing their due diligence and, you know, you couldn't finish what you had
05:35to do until the physical, you know, which they did yesterday.
05:39So I don't, do I blame the Ravens?
05:41No, they're, they're just doing what they're supposed to do.
05:45And then they've got to make a decision.
05:48The Ravens had to make a decision on, okay, we got to live with him, not practicing every
05:54day, or maybe for the first year he can practice.
05:56But then, you know, cause I heard Pete Carroll, Bob say that he only practiced on Fridays the
06:01last nine weeks.
06:02And then he went on IR after that.
06:06So what percentage of a guy are you really getting and how long are you getting them for?
06:11That's, that's what you got to look at.
06:13So to me, when, when I look at this whole picture now and the Ravens have Hendrickson and
06:20their two picks back, I think it's a win.
06:23Boy, it seems that way, doesn't it?
06:25Yeah.
06:25Because, uh, 12 hours ago, it seemed like a colossal, oh my God, what the hell are you
06:31doing?
06:31You're a harbender.
06:32I have to cost to get rid of.
06:34I mean, what are they, didn't they figure out what the situation was with him health wise?
06:39But the Ravens did try to renegotiate the deal where a first round draft pick apparently
06:44was still going to be involved when he'll be two number ones, but Raiders said no.
06:48So the Ravens pivot to Trey Hendrickson, four year deal, 112 million.
06:54This is according to Adam Schefter, 112, 60 mil, fully guaranteed $20 million signing
07:01bonus, assuming it passes his fiscal because he missed a lot of time too.
07:06Yeah.
07:06And Bob, what, you know, I think like what the tone of the phone calls and our tone would
07:14have been totally different if they had, if, if we came in and it was steam be coming up
07:18at that thing, right?
07:19Yes.
07:20If there was no Hendrickson, yeah, yeah.
07:22Then it'd be like, what lost nine free agents got no pass rusher now.
07:28You know what I mean?
07:28What the hell are you going to?
07:29And at 14, you're going to take a pass rusher, but he's not going to be Max Crosby.
07:32But Hendrickson coming in, plus your two first round draft picks.
07:37And let me stress again, we were all in on the Max Crosby trade.
07:42Yeah.
07:44But as we revisit it now, damaged goods, according to the Ravens, and apparently teams are calling
07:52about Max Crosby.
07:53Dallas will not be one of them because their team doctor was one of the advisors to the
07:58Ravens in regards to shooting down the deal because Dallas offered a one and a two.
08:03Yeah.
08:04And the Raiders turned it down.
08:06Now Dallas apparently will not re-engage in negotiations there, but teams are still interested
08:12in Max Crosby.
08:13But it's now a moot point from our perspective, unless he goes to like Cincinnati or Cleveland
08:18or Pittsburgh or something like that.
08:20But now Trey Hendrickson comes in, older player, was injury-plagued last year.
08:26Yep.
08:28His season was riddled with contract drama.
08:32It was just right out of the gate.
08:34Yeah.
08:35That year was doomed for him and for them.
08:39Now the Ravens get a guy who two years ago led to Lee in sacks.
08:4217 and a half, I believe.
08:44Had back-to-back years of at least 17.
08:47Even last year in a limited time, he had like four or five.
08:50So Hendrickson comes in.
08:53Aditi Kinkamvala, who we've had on the show, used to be NFL Network, now CBS, she tweeted
08:59out last night that Lamar Jackson has, in fact, renegotiated his deal.
09:03Whatever that means.
09:06Renegotiated his deal.
09:07So it frees up some dough enough to pay Hendrickson.
09:12And now you get your first-round draft pick back, too.
09:15You still have multiple holes to fill.
09:18Let's not forget that.
09:19Yeah.
09:19But for the second time in five days with Hendrickson, you have filled a major need in a pass, right?
09:27And you have your 14th pick.
09:28Right.
09:29So you can fill a major hole there.
09:31So, yeah.
09:32And the thing with Lamar is, because I just saw from Adam Schefter or whoever, Josh Allen
09:39just restructured and they picked up 12 million cap space.
09:42That's all Lamar's doing.
09:43They're getting more than that.
09:45And bottom line is, they're adding years to the contract.
09:48They're giving him a huge...
09:49He's getting a pile of cash today.
09:51You know, 40, 50, whoever knows how many million.
09:54And the cap number comes down because you extend the signing bonus over the length of the deal.
10:00So you extend the length to lower the cap number.
10:03And that's what they did with Lamar.
10:05Noah McGraw.
10:05What's up, baby?
10:06Schefter with some more details.
10:08They've created roughly 40 million in cap space for this year.
10:12So he got a lot of cash.
10:14Yeah.
10:15Whatever it takes, man.
10:16I mean, this isn't...
10:17Hey, hey, hey, Armadi.
10:18Who cares?
10:19Well, all it is is, you know, like his salary was going to be huge.
10:24So all he did was took his salary and converted it to signing bonus and it extended.
10:30So he's still getting the same amount of money, but he's getting cash, right?
10:35Like, all right, you're going to get paid for 17 weeks, but it doesn't start till September.
10:41Or you can get that 60 million today.
10:44Yeah, his cap hit was going to be 74 and a half for this year, him alone.
10:49So that, as you just said, frees up significant financial strength for them if they choose to use it.
10:58And then really to take it back to the Raiders side of things, I know Rappaport and some others are
11:02saying,
11:03well, they can, you know, bring the Crosby contract as hefty as it is.
11:06They can bring that back in and be okay.
11:08But let's be honest here.
11:10They operated in the legal tampering period, Monday, all those heavy moves, especially Linderbaum,
11:15assuming that Crosby's money was going to be off the books.
11:18So can they technically make it work?
11:21Yeah.
11:22And even Crosby, I think, is a guy who could, you know, move some money around and make things okay
11:27in the short term.
11:28But that is not what they expected at all.
11:31You know, would they have still given all the money that they gave earlier this week
11:35if they didn't make that initial trade for Crosby?
11:38I'm not so sure.
11:40No, because they signed a pass rusher.
11:42You know?
11:43Yeah, that for sure wouldn't have happened.
11:44So, no, I think because their game, because they planned out all along that they were going to trade Crosby.
11:52So, you know, and then you get your plan together of who we're going to go get.
11:55And like you said, Nolan, if this, if they still had Crosby, they would have done things totally different.
12:01It's been 880, 1-0, 5-7, the fan, an abbreviated version.
12:04We're only here until 11 because Maryland taking on Iowa today in Chicago.
12:08Terps beat Oregon 70-60, led the entire time, almost tried to piss it away late in the second half.
12:16But they managed to maintain.
12:17Kobe Mayo was 4-4 with five ribbies, including a home run yesterday for the Orioles.
12:22And how about UMBC advancing as well as they'll get to the conference finals coming up this weekend against Vermont.
12:28And Bam Adebayo scored 83 points against the Wizards.
12:32That was crazy.
12:3383 points.
12:34Hey, look, Bam, 20-10 kind of guy.
12:3683 points, second most in NBA history next to Will Chamberlain.
12:41But Max Crosby's gone.
12:42Trey Hendrickson and your two first-round draft picks are in.
12:47I don't know.
12:48My head's spinning right now.
