00:48You know, you want to take people on a journey and to engage people and make people have an intense,
00:54very, very great ride.
00:58So that's the first rule.
00:59But I think the whole intention of the film was there was a bigger idea about trying to, you know,
01:08there's an idea that, you know, people forget very quickly that we all are living on this planet together.
01:14It doesn't matter if you're from Venice or you're from New York or you're from Syria or you're from Beijing.
01:22You do one thing here, it affects everyone.
01:26The effects may take a while, but we're actually seeing the limits of those effects.
01:33And we're all, you know, starting to suffer from them.
01:37You know, in the United States we have this hurricane going on, which is the worst rainstorm in the history
01:42of the United States.
01:43And that's not supposed to happen, yet over 10, 12 years we've had three of these huge hurricanes.
01:50And so no one's sort of connecting that.
01:53It's all connected.
01:55And so I was wondering if you could take the idea of this planet and reduce it to a house
02:00and try to tell, which is very relatable.
02:02Because someone comes over your house and they throw a piece of trash on your floor, you get pissed off.
02:07If someone puts out a cigarette in your carpet, you get upset.
02:11So it was a way of trying to take big ideas and sort of reduce it to smaller ideas.
02:17We, the audience, are like Jennifer Lawrence's character.
02:20Do you really want to take our heart out or not?
02:24Me as the person?
02:25Yes, as the poet, as the artist.
02:27I'm not the poet for the artist.
02:29The poet for the artist is a character in it.
02:31And he's not the poet artist, too.
02:34He's also something else.
02:36But I think the poet is very much, you know, one of the characters that is constantly insatiable, that just
02:45constantly needs to take and to take.
02:48And it's like all of us.
02:50We're constantly consuming a new pair of shoes, a new pair of pants.
02:54There's just so many different things we're trying to bring into this world.
02:58And not thinking about what the impact on each other is.
03:05In Black Swan, in The Wrestler, and now in this movie, you really love to stay on your actor's bodies.
03:14You really almost destroy their bodies.
03:17Why are you so obsessed by that?
03:21Well, I mean, you know, that's the movie.
03:23For me, movie is about the actors.
03:25It's always been about performance.
03:27It's always been about the emotion.
03:28It's always been about the character.
03:30So I'm always very, very deeply focused in on them.
03:34Because I think that's why people come to see the movies.
03:38They come to see these actors and great performances.
03:42You almost directed Batman, Watchmen, and Wolverine.
03:45Watching Mother, I was thinking, my God, a cinecomic directed by Aronofsky would be crazy.
03:51Do you sometimes think about doing it or not?
03:55Yeah, I mean, I like those big movies.
03:56I think I would be a very different filmmaker making those movies because it wouldn't be about me.
04:01It's about the title.
04:03I've been lucky enough to be able to have the ability to make films that I wanted to make over
04:07my career.
04:09So it continues.
04:11It's really impossible to be an artist, a creative person, and having an healthy relationship or not.
04:18Oh, I think it's possible to have a healthy relationship.
04:21I think this is just an extreme exaggeration to sort of tell the story.
04:26Okay.
04:26Great.
04:27Thank you.
04:28Thank you very much.
04:31Thank you.
04:33Non è mai abbastanza.
04:35No!
04:40Non è mai abbastanza.
