00:00:12I
00:00:42yes darling I'm running your bath for you. you're too thoughtful. there won't be a
00:00:48moment. you don't have to go home. no everybody's entitled to a little privacy
00:00:54once in a while. especially an old married couple like us.
00:01:11you're beautiful. you're not supposed to say that to a man beautiful. handsome and
00:01:17like a Greek god like an Adonis. I like to keep fit it's important.
00:01:22besides today's the day. what day dear? we've been married five weeks exactly.
00:01:29I know. still it's hardly the time for an anniversary. it's the time I planned.
00:01:35what do you mean dear? I told you about when I was in the merchant navy. working the ships.
00:01:41yes darling. I know you don't like talking about it. that terrible accident you had in
00:01:46Canada. I was pushed. I know I was pushed. jealousy. if it had been into the water I'd
00:01:54have had a chance. I understand water. it was the dock. the hard stony dock. oh I've got
00:02:01bad memories. and a silver plate in my skull. I saw the world. the riches of the
00:02:07world. and it did teach me one thing. there was a big chinaman. a sea cook. his body all
00:02:16going to flab. but he did teach me one thing. pressure points. no force. no bruise to betray
00:02:23you afterwards. at the right place a gentle pressure and you go out like a light.
00:03:02do you really think I could fall for someone like you? all flab and indulgences.
00:03:44do you think I could fall for someone like you? all right? all right.
00:04:05This is kind of morbid isn't it Mr Mason? It's hard to believe she drowned in there.
00:04:10Such a tiny space to drown in. Some kind of seizure? No. What? Well you heard the coroner.
00:04:18Oh yes yes I heard it but I didn't believe him. I think you murdered her.
00:04:27Yes I think you murdered Mrs Jameson. I'm sure you being a lawyer I don't need to remind you.
00:04:34The law of slander? Oh yes the police warned me about that. You told them that?
00:04:41What did they say? They said they had no evidence to suggest it was not an unfortunate accident.
00:04:50Well then. But I still think you murdered her. I don't think I care what you think Mr Mason. A
00:04:55lonely
00:04:55woman past the marrying age and then you? Oh yes you did it. It was an accident. There's nothing you
00:05:03can
00:05:04do but read the will. Yes. Not that you have to. She left everything to me didn't she?
00:05:13What are you staring at? You. I'm going to remember your face Mr Jameson. I'm never going to forget your
00:05:21face.
00:05:31I really would like to store these away Mr Mason. I need the space. Hmm? These I told you about
00:05:37them
00:05:37oh a month ago. Connie I have no idea what you're talking about. Just a few old papers we found
00:05:42when
00:05:42we sold off Mrs Jameson's effect. Nothing valuable but you said to hold on to them in case her husband
00:05:48did come back and claim them. Jameson. I don't think he will be coming back. Do you? After all she's
00:05:55been
00:05:55dead a year at least hasn't she? Longer than that. 14 months. As you say there's nothing valuable.
00:06:02No he won't be coming back. Yes all right Connie you can put him in the archives. Thank you Mr
00:06:09Mason. No I'll keep this.
00:06:24Thank you. Have them send up a bottle of champagne would you? Yes. Thanks Mr Tully. And iced water for
00:06:30me. Yes sir.
00:06:31Mrs Tully. Iced water? Oh Tony I should have thought on our honeymoon just one glass of champagne.
00:06:37I have to keep fit. Stay in trim. For you darling. Besides I like water. It's cleansing. Now what do
00:06:50you want to do?
00:06:51A show? Shopping? See the town? I think the first thing to do is to have a bath and get
00:06:55changed. Right.
00:06:57And then I really must write to my family. Family? Well what little family I have. I told you darling.
00:07:03Oh yes. But that can wait a while can't it? Yes. I suppose it can.
00:07:24Good night Mr Mason. Don't work too late. No I won't Connie. Good night.
00:07:41Good night.
00:07:43Good night.
00:07:47Good night.
00:08:27Good morning, darling.
00:08:38I suppose I shall get used to it eventually.
00:08:41What's that?
00:08:42All this powerhouse stuff so early in the morning.
00:08:44I like to keep in trim.
00:08:47Anyway, you may not have to get used to it.
00:08:49What do you mean?
00:08:51May not be around that long.
00:08:52Sorry, darling, I just don't know what you're talking about.
00:08:55Come on, darling, your bath's running.
00:08:57What's the rush?
00:08:58Of course, I forgot.
00:09:01The honeymoon's over, isn't it?
00:09:02It's back to domesticity today.
00:09:05These past two weeks have flown by.
00:09:08Haven't they, darling?
00:09:08Like you said, the honeymoon's over.
00:09:19Oh, my God.
00:09:23Oh, my God.
00:09:31Oh, my God.
00:09:41Oh, my God.
00:09:42Oh, my God.
00:10:13Connie, will you get me the Stukeley Hotel, Devonshire?
00:10:16I want to speak to the manager.
00:10:18You shouldn't be working through your lunch.
00:10:19No, it's not working. Strictly personal.
00:10:21Stukeley Hotel?
00:10:22Mm-hmm. Try directories.
00:10:38I wanted some information about the Tully's.
00:10:42Yes, yes, the poor woman who, yes.
00:10:44But it's Mr. Tully that I'm interested in.
00:10:46Could you describe him to me?
00:10:50Well, you see, he might be an old friend of mine,
00:10:53in which case I'd want to offer my sympathy.
00:10:55You understand?
00:10:57Yes.
00:10:59Medium height? Yes.
00:11:01Athletic?
00:11:03The sort of man who might work at keeping himself fit?
00:11:08Yes.
00:11:09I see, and his appearance?
00:11:13Dark.
00:11:18Like any sober businessman.
00:11:20Oh, I see.
00:11:22No, no, it doesn't sound like my friend.
00:11:25But thank you so much for all your help.
00:11:27Yes, thank you.
00:11:28Goodbye.
00:11:28Goodbye.
00:11:43Do you like some more coffee?
00:11:46Coffee?
00:11:47You dye your hair, don't you?
00:11:49Dye my hair?
00:11:50Of course not.
00:11:52Well, I do just touch in the highlights.
00:11:54That's all.
00:11:54So simple.
00:12:37You're way off beam.
00:12:38You're getting far too imaginative, Oliver.
00:12:40There is no connection between Mrs. Jameson and Mrs. Tully.
00:12:43Except both were newly married,
00:12:44and both ended up dead in a bath.
00:12:47Yes, that's an unhappy coincidence.
00:12:49Too much of a coincidence for me.
00:12:56Oliver, I did do as you asked.
00:12:59I got in touch with the Devonshire police.
00:13:02They are satisfied that Mrs. Tully died accidentally in her bath.
00:13:07And so is the coroner.
00:13:09All right?
00:13:11Mrs. Tully is now buried.
00:13:12And so is Mrs. Jameson.
00:13:14Yeah, well, of course, I didn't leave it there.
00:13:16I did ask about Mr. Tully as well.
00:13:18I've got a full description.
00:13:20He didn't resemble Jameson at all.
00:13:22Except both were athletic men.
00:13:24All right.
00:13:25Well, anyway, as far as I can ascertain,
00:13:27Jameson left the country.
00:13:28As far as you can ascertain.
00:13:34Oliver, drop it.
00:13:36Yes, I think you'd like that, wouldn't you, Quilly?
00:13:38Because if there is a connection,
00:13:40it means you'd have to admit you were wrong about Mrs. Jameson.
00:13:42You'd have to reopen the case.
00:13:44Yes, that would be inconvenience.
00:13:46I don't deny it.
00:13:46But it's not going to happen.
00:13:47I've been on the force a long time.
00:13:49Haven't made a mistake yet.
00:13:51Yet.
00:13:53You're beginning to sound like an echo.
00:13:57Thank you for the sherry.
00:13:59I must be off.
00:14:02Do me one favor.
00:14:03I would like to know more about this man.
00:14:05Tully, you know what sort of a chap he was,
00:14:06how he met his wife.
00:14:07Who'd know?
00:14:08I don't know.
00:14:10Her family, maybe.
00:14:11Her next of kin.
00:14:12Can you put me in touch with them?
00:14:13Strictly off the record.
00:14:16All right.
00:14:17I'll see what I can do.
00:14:18Thanks.
00:14:20Bye, Connie.
00:14:21Bye.
00:14:43Good morning, Freddy.
00:14:44Morning, Mr. Walker.
00:14:46My, you start early, sir.
00:14:48Have to keep fit, Freddy.
00:14:49Stay in trim, eh?
00:14:50The usual.
00:14:50Make it tall and cool.
00:14:56I tell you, someone who looks like you, Mr. Walker,
00:14:58know right in a place like this.
00:14:59It demoralizes the others.
00:15:02Hello.
00:15:03Here's another one that's going to lower the morale around here.
00:15:09Good morning.
00:15:10Could I have a dry sherry, please?
00:15:11One dry sherry, Miss.
00:15:15Oh, don't worry, Miss.
00:15:16It's not you.
00:15:17You're not seeing things.
00:15:17It's on account of being oldie-worldie outside
00:15:19and modern inside.
00:15:20Everybody does a double take when they come in here.
00:15:22It was the fire.
00:15:23It gutted the whole interior
00:15:24but left the main fabric standing.
00:15:26So they refurbished.
00:15:28Isn't that right, Freddy?
00:15:29That's right, Mr. Walker.
00:15:39Not a regular.
00:15:41Day trip where I suppose you've popped in for a sauna or a massage.
00:15:44I'll have to work fast, then.
00:15:46You fancy a chance there, Miss Walker?
00:15:48I fancy her.
00:15:50My chances.
00:15:51We'll have to see.
00:15:54And this one's strictly for pleasure.
00:16:05You don't mind my sitting here, do you?
00:16:08Not at all.
00:16:11It erodes the body, you know.
00:16:14Hard liquor.
00:16:15Breaks down the tissues, dulls the brain,
00:16:17eventually destroys the liver and kidneys.
00:16:20This glass of sherry's got a lot to live up to.
00:16:23I'm sorry.
00:16:23I was employing shock tactics to get through to you
00:16:26so I could talk to you.
00:16:27Do you need to talk to me?
00:16:29Need might be a bit strong, but I'd like to.
00:16:32You don't look like the sort of man who has to be lonely.
00:16:35Oh, but I am.
00:16:36I really am.
00:16:37On account of I'm so shy.
00:16:41I'm Mark.
00:16:42Mark Walker.
00:16:43I'm a talk to strange, pretty girl of habit.
00:16:46Stella Mackenzie.
00:16:47Mackenzie?
00:16:48That's a good old Gaelic name.
00:16:50Explains an awful lot.
00:16:52Everything.
00:16:52Explains?
00:16:53Well, the way you look.
00:16:54Cool, superb.
00:16:56Only girls with the Gaelic in them have your kind of beauty.
00:16:59Speed you move, Mr. Walker.
00:17:01You should change your name to Sprinter.
00:17:03It's all talk, I promise.
00:17:04You can relax and feel completely safe with me.
00:17:06I'm not sure any girl should relax with you, Mr. Walker.
00:17:09Oh, no, let's drop the Mr.
00:17:11Mark.
00:17:12And you're Stella, right?
00:17:16You know, this is going to sound the corniest question ever,
00:17:19but do you come here often?
00:17:20No.
00:17:21It's the first time, in fact.
00:17:23I've just rented a cottage nearby.
00:17:25I thought I'd pampered myself today.
00:17:27Sawn and massaged.
00:17:28You live nearby?
00:17:29Yes, about a mile or two.
00:17:30That's great.
00:17:31And I see no rings on your finger.
00:17:33That's greater still.
00:17:35Well, I'm staying here.
00:17:36A vacation.
00:17:38A well-earned rest after, well, a lot of work.
00:17:41And you were right the first time.
00:17:43I do need to talk to someone.
00:17:45You see, once in a while, I get a reaction.
00:17:48A reaction?
00:17:49Not what you're thinking.
00:17:51I was in the Merchant Navy.
00:17:53That was not a good scene for me.
00:17:55I had an accident.
00:17:57A bad accident.
00:17:59And you may not believe this.
00:18:03I get withdrawn.
00:18:06Introverted inside myself.
00:18:09Doctors say it isn't healthy.
00:18:12Even this keep fit kick of mine, it's part of the syndrome.
00:18:16You're so surprised you came out of the accident alive.
00:18:20You're working to preserve life.
00:18:23To hold on to it.
00:18:26You understand that?
00:18:29That's not so complicated.
00:18:32Stella, when I came over here to talk with you,
00:18:35I had in mind the full treatment.
00:18:37I was going to make a pass.
00:18:39But now I'd like to know you.
00:18:41I mean, really.
00:18:43Will you have dinner with me tonight?
00:18:47I'm not sure if the last self-revelation bit
00:18:50isn't just a part of your technique, Mr. Walker.
00:18:52I swear to you.
00:18:53Yes.
00:18:55I think I would like to have dinner with you tonight.
00:18:58Great.
00:18:59Where shall I pick you up?
00:19:00Why don't we meet here?
00:19:01I'll be in the area anyway.
00:19:02Whatever you say.
00:19:04About 8.30 then.
00:19:05I'll be waiting.
00:19:12Mark.
00:19:16Good night.
00:19:22Strictly.
00:19:23For pleasure.
00:19:37Good night, Mr. Walker.
00:20:07Well, don't worry, sir.
00:20:08It's not you.
00:20:09You're not saying things.
00:20:10It's on account of being oldie-worldie outside
00:20:11and modern inside.
00:20:12Everybody does a double take since they walk in.
00:20:15It was a fire.
00:20:15Gutted the place completely.
00:20:17Can I help you?
00:20:19I hope you're not going to be neurotic about it.
00:20:22I'm all of five minutes late.
00:20:24Come on, let's go.
00:20:25I thought we were down in here.
00:20:26No, no, it's too crowded.
00:20:28We can do better.
00:20:37It's a marvellous dinner.
00:20:39Come in.
00:20:43I talked so much tonight
00:20:44and I forgot to mention the most vital part of my life.
00:20:48I'm a stage designer.
00:20:50Not important, but I wouldn't do anything else.
00:20:53Would you like a nightcap?
00:20:55I think that I can rustle up some orange juice
00:20:58or at least some iced water.
00:21:00A Scotch will do fine.
00:21:01Isn't that going to erode your body?
00:21:04I drink once in a while.
00:21:06Just once in a while.
00:21:11The music doesn't erode the mind, does it?
00:21:19Another vital thing that I forgot to mention.
00:21:22I'm not in the habit of inviting men back.
00:21:25Not after the very first date.
00:21:27But you trust me?
00:21:28No.
00:21:28I'm worried about you.
00:21:31I thought that I was supposed to de-introvert you.
00:21:40But you've hardly said a word all evening.
00:21:43What happened to the man that I met earlier today?
00:21:45Did he run out of conversation
00:21:47or is he worried about something?
00:21:48Worried?
00:21:49Of course not.
00:21:50Thoughtful though.
00:21:50And far away.
00:21:53I got the impression that you were thinking about something else.
00:21:57Someone else.
00:21:59What gave you that idea?
00:22:00You did.
00:22:01You're right, Stella.
00:22:02I was far away.
00:22:03Problems, business.
00:22:04Is that the once in a while?
00:22:06You drink when you're under stress?
00:22:09Maybe.
00:22:12Unstress me.
00:22:13You really shouldn't drink, Mr. Walker.
00:22:16It goes straight to your head.
00:22:17And to your hands.
00:22:19Stella.
00:22:19I think it's good night time.
00:22:25I'll see you tomorrow.
00:22:27I'll be here.
00:22:52Good night, Mr. Walker.
00:22:53Good night.
00:23:07Good night.
00:23:36Good night.
00:23:43Good night.

00:51:39Mrs Ludlow.
00:51:40For pity's sake Freddie you've got to help me.
00:51:42I think he's going to kill me.
00:51:49That's about done it.
00:51:51Thank you darling.
00:51:54I love looking at gardens but I'm no good at creating them.
00:51:56Orange juice however that's another thing.
00:51:58I was glad to do it for you.
00:51:59Especially glad.
00:52:01Planting rose bushes has a permanent feel to it.
00:52:03Means you're gonna stay.
00:52:04Yes.
00:52:05Means you'll still be here when I get back.
00:52:09Yes.
00:52:10If I can still afford it.
00:52:12Eh?
00:52:13It's just gone twelve.
00:52:14See?
00:52:15I see but...
00:52:16I'm a working girl and I'm not working.
00:52:18I've got an awful lot to do.
00:52:20You won't be working much longer.
00:52:22Not if I have anything to do with it.
00:52:28I'll be moving about quite a bit today.
00:52:30No point in calling me.
00:52:32Don't call me I'll call you.
00:52:33That's right.
00:52:35Goodbye.
00:52:36Bye.
00:52:36Bye.
00:52:49Always the same time and always the same drink and always...
00:52:53Ah.
00:52:53Here he is now.
00:52:55Mr. Walker.
00:52:56Yes.
00:52:57Mr. Mark Walker.
00:52:59That's right.
00:53:00Detective Superintendent Weston sir.
00:53:02Police.
00:53:03Is this your driver license sir?
00:53:07Yes it is.
00:53:08I didn't even know I'd lost it.
00:53:10Where did you find it?
00:53:11Do you mind coming with us sir?
00:53:13What is this?
00:53:14We'd appreciate your cooperation.
00:53:16We really would.
00:53:18After you sir.
00:53:24And you.
00:53:46Look surely I'm entitled to some explanation.
00:54:03I'd rather you didn't touch anything Mr. Walker.
00:54:05What is this?
00:54:07I was hoping you'd tell us sir.
00:54:09You see we found this.
00:54:15Lying there.
00:54:16Look what's happened here?
00:54:17Where's Angela?
00:54:18Mrs. Ludlow.
00:54:19We haven't found her yet sir.
00:54:20Will you stop playing games and tell me what this is about?
00:54:23You came here last night Mrs. Ludlow?
00:54:24Yes.
00:54:24What time did you leave?
00:54:25Sometime this morning.
00:54:2610.30 I don't know.
00:54:27This morning?
00:54:28It isn't what you think.
00:54:30I got a little drunk last night that's all.
00:54:32I slept there on that sofa.
00:54:35And left about 10.30?
00:54:37Yes.
00:54:39Yes.
00:54:44She phoned me.
00:54:45It must have been about 12 noon.
00:54:46Mrs. Ludlow?
00:54:47Yeah.
00:54:47Sure I was there?
00:54:48Of course.
00:54:48Recognize that voice anyway.
00:54:49Anyone would.
00:54:51She said you'd had too much to drink.
00:54:52It was unlike you.
00:54:53It'd gone to your head.
00:54:55She said she was afraid of you.
00:54:57You was getting violent.
00:54:58That's a lie.
00:54:58Well that's what she told me.
00:54:59She said you were insisting on seeing all her jewellery.
00:55:02This is crazy.
00:55:03Well that fitted.
00:55:04Because I remember last night she joked about showing you her jewellery.
00:55:06Well that was a mistake.
00:55:08She was worried.
00:55:09She didn't want to go home.
00:55:10It caused a plea in case it caused a scandal or something.
00:55:12She asked me if I'd come over and try and calm you down.
00:55:17What did you do?
00:55:18Well drove over right away of course and found a place like this.
00:55:21That's when I called you.
00:55:25Well sir.
00:55:26She's trying to frame me.
00:55:29But why?
00:55:32Why?
00:55:34What time did she call?
00:55:3612.
00:55:36No about 10 past.
00:55:42Then I'm in the clear.
00:55:44You see I can prove exactly where I was at that time.
00:55:47Nowhere near here.
00:55:49More than a mile away.
00:55:50Where?
00:55:51At 12 o'clock this morning.
00:55:53I was with Miss Stella Mackenzie.
00:55:56Don't believe me.
00:55:58Ask her.
00:56:00Stella?
00:56:07Stella?
00:56:14But she was here.
00:56:16Just an hour or so ago.
00:56:20She was here.
00:56:21Mr Walker.
00:56:23It doesn't look to me that anyone has been here in a long time.
00:56:26But this is where she works.
00:56:27She's a theatrical designer.
00:56:29There was an easel just there.
00:56:40She was here.
00:56:44She was here.
00:56:45At least this seems to be news recently.
00:56:50Earth under your fingernails.
00:56:53And on your shirt too.
00:56:56Gardening Mr Walker.
00:56:57She...
00:56:58We planted roses.
00:57:00Roses.
00:57:05Not a sign of life anywhere.
00:57:07The bed been slept in.
00:57:08I don't see how.
00:57:09There aren't even any beds.
00:57:11Room's empty.
00:57:14Get this down to the lab.
00:57:16I'm betting Mr Walker's fingerprints are all over it.
00:57:18I told you I used it.
00:57:20Oh yes.
00:57:21To plant roses.
00:57:23So the earth under your nails and on your clothing should match up.
00:57:26This is a frame.
00:57:27A dirty lousy frame.
00:57:29Turn your pockets out Walker.
00:57:33Your pockets.
00:57:45A frame.
00:57:47And I suppose these are a plant.
00:57:50Where is she Walker?
00:57:52Angela Ludlow.
00:57:54Where did you bury her?
00:58:09You found her.
00:58:11Stella Mackenzie.
00:58:12You located her.
00:58:13No we didn't find her Walker.
00:58:17Because she doesn't exist.
00:58:20But she has to.
00:58:22The house.
00:58:23She rented it.
00:58:24The estate agents must know.
00:58:26We checked with them.
00:58:27They never heard of Stella Mackenzie.
00:58:29But they must have.
00:58:31Somebody rented that house.
00:58:33It was rented to an Oliver Mason.
00:58:35A solicitor.
00:58:36But he never got to live in it.
00:58:39Because he committed suicide.
00:58:41He drowned himself.
00:59:04But the house.
00:59:10Well.
00:59:13The house.
00:59:13Now.
00:59:13The house.
00:59:13me. you don't. it has long been a fallacy that the presence of a corpus delicti is
00:59:24essential in a murder case and indeed it is a fallacy Mark Walker. you have heard
00:59:33the verdict of the jury and in my opinion a just and fair verdict of guilty.
00:59:40guilty of murdering Angela Mary Ludlow it is now my duty to pronounce sentence
00:59:48and to put you away where you can no longer damage or harm society. it is
00:59:57therefore the sentence of this court that you be confined in one of her
01:00:02magister's prisoners for a term of at least 30 years.
01:00:08now
01:00:11now

01:01:06it doesn't matter anymore. you're here you're back and you can tell them. i came to tell you Mark.
01:01:12i didn't want you to sit out the next 30 years without knowing.
01:01:18that would have been too kind.
01:01:20Stella? no. my name's not Stella. or Mackenzie. it's Sheila O'Rourke.
01:01:29you were right at least about the Gaelic.
01:01:32O'Rourke?
01:01:33that rings a bell doesn't it Mark Walker.
01:01:36or should i say Mr Jameson?
01:01:39or Mr Tully yes.
01:01:41yes Mr Tully.
01:01:44because Mrs Tully was Yvonne O'Rourke.
01:01:47my sister.
01:01:50it was poor Mr Mason who called me. you killed him didn't you? because he recognized you.
01:01:55we had got together a really private investigation.
01:01:59and we had so little to go on.
01:02:01a man who liked to keep fit.
01:02:04i did the rounds of the health farms and the gymnasiums for months before i spotted you.
01:02:09i was sure it was you but Mr Mason had to confirm it.
01:02:12i called him.
01:02:14he came down and before he could say yes or no.
01:02:18he was dead.
01:02:20that was confirmation enough.
01:02:22you?
01:02:24and Mason?
01:02:26an unlikely team.
01:02:28but a nice man. i liked him.
01:02:33and i loved my sister.
01:02:36and you killed her too didn't you?
01:02:40and now you're paying for it.
01:02:42oh not for the murder you did do.
01:02:45but for one you didn't.
01:02:48but that suits me.
01:02:50you're no better than i am.
01:02:52you killed two.
01:02:53Angela Ludlow.
01:02:54i'll tell them.
01:02:55i'll tell them you killed her.
01:02:57and whatever their motive they'll put you away too.
01:03:01you still don't understand do you?
01:03:05i told you my job was theatrical design.
01:03:08well before that i was on the other side of the footlights.
01:03:12i didn't kill Angela Ludlow.
01:03:16i created her.
01:03:18my old love.
01:03:21but who could prove it?
01:03:25bye love.
01:03:27don't do anything i wouldn't do will you?
01:03:29i was there.
01:03:42i will tell you my god.
01:03:44my god.
01:03:44my god.
