00:00Jane I've decided you must give up your governess in slavery at once.
00:07indeed sir begging your pardon. I shall not. you will not? no sir we should go on
00:13as before. as before. as thus.
00:19Jane you look blooming and smiling and pretty. is this my pale little elf? it is
00:26Jane Eyre sir. soon to be Jane Rochester. in four weeks not a day more.
00:29the announcement made me giddy. a feeling stronger than joy stunned me. it was I
00:37think almost fear. you blush now you're pale Jane. why? because you gave me a new
00:44name. Jane Rochester. yes Mrs. Rochester. young Mrs. Rochester. and you must be
00:50attired in satins and lace. this morning I wrote to my banker in London to send me
00:54certain jewels he has in his keeping. in a few days I shall pour them into your
00:59lap. for every attention every privilege shall be yours as I would accord a peer's
01:04daughter if about to marry her. oh sir never mind jewels. jewels for Jane Eyre
01:09sounds unnatural and strange. I would rather not have them. I will myself with
01:14the diamond chain around your neck. oh sir please don't address me as if I were your
01:19captive beauty for I am not. I'm your plain Quakerish governess. you're a beauty in my
01:25eyes and I shall make the world acknowledge it. but then you will not know me sir. I
01:29shall not be your Jane Eyre any longer. oh no you should be Jane Rochester. oh an
01:33ape rather in a harlequin's jacket. a jay in borrowed plumes. and after we are
01:39married in the church below yonder I shall waft you away to regions nearer the
01:47sun to France to Italy. all the ground I've wandered over shall be retrodden by
01:51you. my Jane my bride. ten years since I flew through Europe half mad with hate
02:00rage and disgust as my companions. now I shall revisit it healed and cleansed with
02:06a very angel as my comforter. I'm not an angel and I will not be one till I die. I
02:11will be myself. so do not send for jewels or satins. I will not wear them. you
02:17refuse? absolutely. ah that will be your married look I suppose sir. oh after six
02:24months. I have observed in books written by men that period assigned as the
02:30furthest to which any husband's ardour extends. distasteful and like you again. oh
02:35is that how you will appear should I ask a favour? as your wife? who talks a
02:41favours. I've offered you favours. but not of my choosing sir. may I ask for now? what you
02:49changeling? there. you are less than civil now and I like rudeness a great deal
02:54better than flattery. this is what I have to ask. why did you take such pains to
03:00make me believe you wish to marry Miss Ingram? is that all? thank God it is no
03:05worse. it may make you indignant Jane. and I've seen what a fire spirit you can be. you
03:12positively glowed in the cool moonlight last night when you mutinated against
03:16fate and claimed your rank as my equal. of course I did. but to the point Miss
03:22Ingram. I feigned courtship of her because I wished to render you as in love
03:29with me as I was with you. I knew jealousy would be my best ally. oh excellent. now
03:36you are small. not one whit bigger than the end of my little finger. was it not a
03:42burning shame and disgrace? did you think nothing of Miss Ingram's feelings?
03:45because she has none save pride and that needs humbling. but won't she feel
03:49forsaken and deserted? on the contrary. she deserted me did she not? on hearing I
03:55might not be as wealthy as she had supposed. you have a curious designing
03:59mind Mr. Rochester. matched to yours you said so. but your principles are in some
04:04points eccentric sir. they've not been trained as yours have Jane. they may have
04:09grown a little awry for lack of attention.
04:15have you anything else to ask? it is my delight to be entreated and to yield.
04:19yes sir. so prompt. please communicate your intentions to Mrs. Fairfax. well she
04:27saw me with you last night in the hall and she was shocked sir. did she think
04:32you'd given the world for love and thought it well lost? I believe she thought I'd
04:36forgotten my station sir. and yours. station? your station is in my heart Jane and on
04:44the necks of those that insult you now or hereafter. I shall enlighten her.
