00:00He can finish with either hand, great footwork, he can score on the block, he can face you
00:05up and knock down a jump shot.
00:07To me, he's the most skilled big man in the game right now.
00:10And Steve, you talk about his skill level, his passing and vision for a big guy.
00:14Really unique and special, whether on the high post or low post, he does an excellent
00:18job finding his teammates for hoops.
00:21You know, part of being a championship team is having the talent first and foremost, but
00:25then managing the minutes of that talent.
00:27The Heat, I thought, did a nice job monitoring the minutes of the big three throughout the
00:32season and playoffs last year.
00:34And here's James outside.
00:36The shot's good on the assist by Wade.
00:39LeBron's got the first basket of the game for Miami.
00:43And the Lakers with possession here.
00:45It's a three-point game.
00:48Here's Nash.
00:50The shot is off.
00:52Some solid defense from Chalmers.
00:54As you said, Clark, the big three in their prime, but really, they've got them to just
00:59get their work in during the season.
01:01Not exhaust themselves before they make it to the playoffs.
01:04I thought, Kevin, along those lines, I thought by the end of last season, Miami was exhausted.
01:09And once you try to win a third title in a row, the emotional fatigue and exhaustion really
01:16becomes a factor.
01:17So this is going to be interesting to watch all year.
01:19Here's LeBron.
01:21Chris Kamen making his last shot.
01:23Here's Bosh.
01:23And he turns it down.
01:25An indication there above the scoreboard.
01:28Looks like it does.
01:29Very passive defense.
01:31But the finish was anything but pass.
01:33No.
01:33He hammered that down, Clark.
01:36Superb above-the-rim action.
01:42Nash against Chalmers.
01:43Nash gets a screen from Bryant.
01:45And it feeds to Gasol.
01:49On the wing, Bryant.
01:53Shot clock at six.
01:58It's stolen by Wade.
02:00In transition.
02:01Here comes Miami.
02:02Oh!
02:03Hammer turn, Bryant.
02:05Hammer turn.
02:06Terrible transition defense there.
02:09I think it would have been pointless, Steve.
02:10There was no way anybody was beating him to the basket there.
02:13And the replay, of course, presented by Keough.
02:16What a play.
02:17A little over a minute 30 into this first quarter.
02:23Here's Kobe.
02:25And he tries off the glass, but it's no good.
02:30Chains with it.
02:31Granted now by Nash.
02:35Ryan against Wade.
02:37Bosh kicks to Wade.
02:40Back to Bosh.
02:44And it's Miami with another.
02:46Five or five to start the game.
02:47And it might be the second quarter before they miss.
02:50The way they're knocking these shots down.
02:52Boy, everything's pure.
02:54Coming off a title last year.
02:56You always wonder if the team will maybe relax a little bit.
02:59They usually won't admit to it, but Chris Bosh readily said at times that his team had
03:04a difficult time lighting that fire again.
03:07A moment to check in with Doris Burke.
03:09Doris?
03:09Hey, Kevin.
03:10Well, Mike D'Antoni had a few minutes for me.
03:12There haven't been many players that have the physical prowess of LeBron James.
03:17And he knows that this is going to pose a lot of problems for his team.
03:21He told me the most amazing thing to him about LeBron was that he has the ability to be a
03:25force in virtually any position on the floor.
03:28From point guard to center.
03:30He can and does do it all, guys.
03:33Thank you, Doris.
03:35Let me go back to what Bosh said.
03:36I think that is true for every team, Clark, that comes off a championship, but they usually
03:42don't admit it like Bosh did.
03:43Well, you know what?
03:44Once you've won it all, there is a bit of a relief and a little malaise that may settle
03:48over you, but I've always respected Bosh's candor.
03:51He's a guy who doesn't bite his tongue, and he articulates what he feels, and I think it's
03:57impressive that they fought back to the finals once more, because that shows they eventually
04:01did recapture that fire.
04:10Free throw good, James.
04:13You know, there are a number of things that went wrong for the Lakers, and a lot of it
04:17led to them being a poor team on the road.
04:19They just didn't look like they were on the same page whenever they played away from Staples.
04:35And both free throws good for LeBron.
04:38Back to the Lakers and their play on the road.
04:40It wasn't for their lack of scoring.
04:42They would put up just about as many on the road as they would at home.
04:46Steve, it's just that they wouldn't get the stops.
04:48The defense wasn't what they needed for road wins.
04:51Well, if you're going to win on the road, Kevin, you have to get stops, and the Lakers
04:55didn't do that.
04:56And, you know, you think about this year, without Dwight Howard now, that defense is
05:00only going to get worse.
05:01So, I would look for the road to be a major issue this year for the Lakers.
05:05And the officials in the backcourt violation.
05:08Not very careful there.
05:09The Lakers making a switch here.
05:22This quarter of action, just under three and a half minutes played.
05:25Dishes it to Bryant.
05:29Good D by Wayne.
05:30If they could end every possession with that shot, they'd be happy.
05:34Nine times out of ten, that's an easy layup for them.
05:40Here's Chalmers.
05:42Bryant with the rebound.
05:44Lakers trail by six.
05:46Hill sets the screen for Kobe.
05:48Top three's off the pick and hammers it home.
05:51That's basketball 101, guys.
05:53I mean, elementary.
05:54Use the screen to free yourself and then take it straight to the rack.
05:57Yeah, very nice set play for them.
05:59Well, that's using your head and using your body.
06:03But he'd have gotten six or seven shots to fall in the first quarter.
06:06They're off and running.
06:10LeBron dishes to Wade.
06:12Pass to Anderson.
06:15Back to Wade.
06:19An amazing finish with a hand right in his face.
06:23Wade's got his first two points of the night.
06:25And he's very savvy in traffic.
06:27When he gets inside, he has kind of an uncanny way of shielding himself from contact
06:32and finding a way to finish at the rim.
06:34And you know what else, Steve?
06:35Watching him run the pick and roll is like watching poetry in motion.
06:38I mean, this guy has that basic play down pat.
06:41He's unstoppable when he runs it.
06:43He's having quite the quarter here, guys.
06:45I mean, shooting the ball extremely well.
06:50Here's the pass to Battier.
06:52Back to Wade.
06:55Passes it to Anderson.
06:57And the shot is good.
06:59You know, Heat head coach Eric Spolster worked his way up from the very bottom in that organization.
07:04I mean, he got his start as a video coordinator and through years of hard work and dedication
07:10has really become an outstanding coach.
07:13So timeout called here.
07:15The first for Los Angeles.
07:17And back to Coach Eric Spolster as a guy who got his start as a video coordinator.
07:21Picking the game apart.
07:23Steve, he's very comfortable with the new advanced stat movement and Linux in the NBA.
07:27Yeah, and I've had a chance to speak with him quite a bit.
07:29He says that the way they use advanced stats is just as a conversation piece in the coaching
07:36room.
07:36Their analytics department will bring them various information and it will force them
07:41to ask questions, which is very helpful for a coaching staff to do.
07:46Savage.
07:47That's the way to get some momentum on your side.
07:50Absolutely.
07:51Those dunks can really have a deflating effect on the defense.
07:55Especially coming from a guy out of the backcourt.
07:59And a chance for just a second to check out the scoring breakdown for Miami.
08:04You know, guys, we've really seen them do a lot of damage in the paint so far.
08:08Yeah, their passing has been terrific too.
08:10Clark, we're seeing a lot of assists, really moving.
08:13A lot of flow offensively.
08:15I like what I see.
08:16I'll tell you what, that's just a major unforced error right there, guys.
08:20My goodness.
08:24Lakers trail by four.
08:30There's 49 seconds left to play in the first quarter.
08:35Blake passes to Johnson.
08:39Goes up to the stripe.
08:41Miami grabs the miss.
08:45Goal off the pick from Batty.
08:47And play stops.
08:48Whistle on what looks to be an illegal screen.
08:50They're losing their concentration here, guys.
08:53Some sloppy play going on right now.
08:55Yep.
08:55Two turnovers in a row for them.
08:57That's a recipe for disaster.
09:0432 seconds left in the first quarter.
09:10Here's Farmar.
09:11He's guarded by Cole.
09:13Here's Blake.
09:14And Allen with the block.
09:16And that'll be the Lakers as it goes out of bounds.
09:18Lakers retain possession.
09:26Here's Gasol.
09:30On the wing, Johnson.
09:32Covered by LeBron.
09:34Shot clock at six.
09:36Here's Farmar.
09:38And again, no good by the Lakers.
09:41Great look.
09:42Disappointing result.
09:43You know, most times he knocks that one down.
09:47Here's Blake.
09:48Buried from 15 feet out.
09:50Blake's got his first bucket in this one.
09:53Everybody on the floor is hot.
09:55Incredible stuff here in the early stages.
09:57Tell you what, both teams playing downhill.
10:00Who's going to blink first?
10:01Plenty of offense in this closely contested first quarter of play.
10:05Heat lead by two.
10:07Back after this from the American Airlines Arena.
10:11Let's go.
10:16Neither team able to build much of a lead up to this point as we start the second quarter.
10:20And when you consider how the Heat are doing, Stephen Funk, what are your thoughts?
10:24And I like what they've done offensively.
10:26Really attacking the rim.
10:28Getting a lot of points in the paint.
10:29And guys, they've been the aggressor early.
10:31I mean, attacking the hoop and getting into the paint.
10:34That can make the game really easy for you.
10:37Only three teams in the entire Eastern Conference had a better than 500 record against the West.
10:42And no surprise, the Heat were one of those three.
10:45And they were dominant against Western Conference opponents all year long.
10:49Taking a look at Los Angeles.
10:51We've got Johnson.
10:52Steve Blake is out there with Farmar.
10:54Then there's Chris Keenan.
10:55And it's Hill in at the four slot.
10:57Let's go to our sideline reporter, Doris Burton.
11:00Doris, what do you have?
11:01Guys, the Los Angeles Lakers, a team that's used to attracting marquee free agents from other teams,
11:07not losing their own in free agency.
11:10But this offseason, Dwight Howard decided to move on,
11:14turning down a larger guaranteed contract with the L.A. Lakers.
11:17A tough blow for the league's banner franchise.
11:20Who've taken out a number of huge billboards around town, asking Dwight to stay.
11:26Sources said he wasn't overjoyed with the system the Lakers employed under head coach Mike D'Antoni.
11:31And also, perhaps, didn't enjoy playing alongside the always hyper-intense Kobe Bryant.
11:38Guys, we'll just have to see how big of a setback that becomes for this team's championship aspirations.
11:44Well, we'll see if the Lakers can find a way.
11:47Thank you, Doris.
11:49Mark, adding on to what you were saying about the Heat versus the West,
11:52they ended up 25-5, which is incredible, Steve, given how many tough teams that are in the Western Conference.
12:00That's amazing, Kevin.
12:01They had a better record against the West than they did against the East in terms of their winning percentage.
12:07So I think that speaks to just how motivated Miami was when they went out on the road to the
12:12West in particular
12:13to really show everybody how good they were.
12:17Kamen gave up his old caveman look, guys, but he's still an intimidating presence in the post.
12:22Good size and strength and doesn't really get pushed around.
12:25Also, excellent timing when it comes to shot blocking.
12:28Now, here's Wade.
12:30He dishes at the box and out of bounds as the Lakers gain possession.
12:36Nick Young's checked in for Johnson.
12:50And we're starting the second quarter, about a minute gone.
12:53And Chris came in skilled offensively.
12:57Ambidextrous finishing inside and a good mid-range shooter.
13:01Yeah, I think he's really good offensively.
13:03He's got a lot of skill.
13:04He's tough to handle.
13:05The question mark with him is defensively.
13:08You know, his weak side rotations can be late.
13:10He's never really been, you know, a center that you've got to solidify your defense around.
13:15Great-looking bounce pass to set up that play.
13:18The Lakers shooting an offensive execution has been beyond great there.
13:2263% from the floor in this game.
13:25Nash kicks to Kamen.
13:29Nash against Chalmers.
13:31That's to Kobe.
13:33Kamen, a screen on Wade.
13:34And there's the whistle.
13:35Illegal screen.
13:36Well, good idea setting that screen, but the execution wasn't there.
13:41No, it sure wasn't.
13:42I mean, you want it to be hard, but it also has to be legal.
13:46And here are the Heat.
13:48Their biggest lead of the game was nine.
13:52The dish to Chalmers.
13:54Inside to Bosch.
13:56And so he draws the foul on the shot.
13:58A trip to the line to shoot two.
14:01You know, Miami went to that smaller lineup last season, and a big change in that was
14:06having Chris Bosch move over to the five spot.
14:08Not his natural position, but I thought he held his own both offensively and defensively
14:14playing in the middle.
14:23Free throw good.
14:26And for Bosch, playing the center, Steve, he's giving up some weight out there.
14:29But he's a very smart defender.
14:31He avoids fouls.
14:32And, you know, the way the league is these days, Kevin, most teams play smaller.
14:36And Bosch can normally find a center that he can guard without too much trouble.
14:41But there are a few matchups around the league that are a problem.
14:44Well, they got the speed and the pressure of that Miami defense.
14:48You think they're able to compensate for any lack of size inside by using those other things.
14:52Yeah, that's normally the case against, I would say, the vast majority of the league.
14:59Now, here's Nash.
15:00He hasn't scored yet, but I'm sure will change.
15:03Good.
15:04What a nice feed by Kobe that time.
15:07And Miami has possession.
15:09Big trail by one.
15:10And Miami calls their first time out of the game.
15:13You know, it seems to me Nick Young is the perfect guy to have coming off the bench because
15:17he's a volume shooter and scorer who can get hot in a hurry.
15:21But I think his best role is to play him kind of in a Jamal Crawford type role.
15:44Here's Allen.
15:46He feeds it to Charles.
15:51That is good.
15:53Chalmers has got his second bucket of the game to go.
15:56Going back to Nick Young, Clark mostly has scored.
15:59He sure is, Kevin, an athletic 6'7 wing.
16:01I don't think there's any reason he can't be a plus rebounder and defender, but it's clear
16:06that his focus primarily has been on the offensive end.
16:09Well, Clark, we've seen the lead change hands quite a bit in this one.
16:12Yeah, we sure have.
16:13I mean, it's been a bit of a windshield wiper game.
16:15I mean, back and forth, the lead has gone five times, so no one in clear control yet.
16:20But I think both teams feel like they can win.
16:23They both have confidence.
16:24So we'll see which team can kind of ride the momentum and take control of this game.
16:29Wade drives in, and he gets it to go.
16:33And the heat lead by one.
16:35Another lead change.
16:36How many of these are we going to have?
16:37I don't know, Steve, but the momentum of this game has certainly swung like a pigeon.
16:45Young against Allen.
16:48Here's Bryant.
16:49Rejected by Wade.
16:51But they get it there.
16:52Six to shoot.
16:54And Young kicks it over to Nash.
16:58Another shot.
17:00And the shot is long.
17:02That's not a sight you see very often.
17:04I mean, he has a great feel for that jump shot, especially when he's open.
17:08And let's now go to the sideline.
17:09We'll catch up here with Doris Burke.
17:11Doris?
17:12Hi, guys.
17:13Well, LeBron James' game is so well-rounded,
17:15you might forget that he led the league in scoring back in 2008.
17:19He said, I've done that before.
17:21I'm capable of doing it.
17:22But that's not my job here.
17:24My job is to do a lot of everything.
17:26Rebounding, passing, and defending.
17:28This guy's, his versatility, and completeness as a basketball player
17:32is what makes him so incredible to watch.
17:34He can do it all, Doris.
17:36Pass, shoot.
17:37Special talent.
17:38Los Angeles making a switch here.
18:00Poked loose.
18:01Oh, and a fast break for the Heat.
18:03Played with the ball.
18:04And here's a nice one-handed slam.
18:07Textbook example there of how to use defense to create offense.
18:11Yes, beautiful transition play after the steal all the way to the basket.
18:14Wasted no time going from defense to offense.
18:17Yeah, it feels like we're starting to pick up the intensity
18:19as the game itself starts to get a little more tight and close.
18:24And he gets the bucket.
18:25That's now eight points for Kobe Bryant.
18:28Guys, he shot a very good percentage today, and they've needed it.
18:34Chalmers dishes to James.
18:39Back to Chalmers.
18:40But Trey.
18:42Bryant with the rebound.
18:43Lakers trail by three.
18:45Lakers still pursuing another title,
18:47but it would be a real shock if that were to come this year.
18:51A lot of age and injury on this team.
18:53They lose Dwight Howard.
18:55This is a club that just doesn't have enough athleticism and speed
18:59to contend for a title.
19:01Here's Chalmers.
19:02After Pau Gasol's bucket,
19:04it's LeBron with the drive.
19:07And another basket for Miami.
19:08His presence is very comforting for this team.
19:11It's kind of a fallback option for them any time they need it.
19:16Back to the Lakers' part.
19:17You think they're too old?
19:18Is this a team that needs to rebuild?
19:20Not yet, Kevin.
19:21The saying is, Young doesn't win in the NBA.
19:23I think for them, health and chemistry are the most important factors.
19:27Also, I think this is a franchise that has shown it can make a home run deal
19:32like acquiring Pau Gasol in 2007.
19:34Got two titles out of that move.
19:36I think they'll look to add some youth through their bench
19:38and restructure the personnel a bit.
19:41And they'll position themselves for another run, perhaps.
19:45The Lakers trail.
19:50Nash outside.
19:52Defense!
19:53Defense!
19:55Defense!
19:5527 seconds left to play in the first half.
19:59Defense!
20:01Here's Gasol.
20:02And a foul called on the shot.
20:04Got him on the way up that time, so he'll shoot two right here.
20:14First trip to the line for him here.
20:17Pau Gasol.
20:18Fitting two shots.
20:36He misses the free throw.
20:38Wesley Johnson's checked in for Los Angeles.
20:45He misses the free throw.
20:56That one drops.
20:57He ties it up.
21:03For Miami, they've gone 7-9 in their field goal attempts here in the second quarter.
21:08Pretty good offense.
21:10The drive by James to the left side wing.
21:15The drive by James to the left side wing.
21:17Cole, the pass to Wade.
21:22With one on the clock, he got it up in time, but it wouldn't fall for him.
21:26And so it's tied as we head to halftime.
21:29And a chance now to send you over to Doris Berg, standing by on the sideline.
21:33Doris.
21:34Kevin, I've got Coach Eric Spolster here with me.
21:37And Coach, what are the things you're seeing so far in this game that you'd like to change going forward?
21:41It starts with getting some stops.
21:43We've got to play off some misses.
21:44And we can't let them force us into one or zero pass possessions.
21:49We've got to move the ball one and a half forward, help each other with that.
21:52But we'd like to get some more in the open.
21:55Eric, thank you so much.
21:56Kevin, back to you.
21:57All right, Doris, thank you.
21:59And, folks, stay right where you are for the halftime show.
22:01Then we'll be back for the start of the second half in the third quarter.
22:05And now, brought to you by Sprint.
22:09And everything is in place and ready to go on the halftime show for this Wednesday night.
22:15The Heat are giving it everything they've got.
22:17They haven't settled on tough shots.
22:19They're taking it strong inside.
22:21They're getting quality shots and a lot of quantity of those quality shots.
22:26A great performance by LeBron in the first half.
22:28The bucket looks about five feet wide for him.
22:31He hasn't missed one shot.
22:33Can you believe it?
22:38Not to be outdone, the Lakers also giving it their all.
22:41Wiping the glass defensively.
22:44Look, no streaks.
22:45They're preventing any second-chance opportunities.
22:48A good start for Kobe.
22:50He's got ten points, and he's been making some nice contributions on the glass, too.
22:54That'll be all for us here at the studios as we head back to the start of the third quarter
22:58with Kevin, Steve, Clark, and Doris.
23:01Thanks so much for joining me.
23:02The Sprint Halftime Report, presented by Sprint.
23:06A soaring view over the waters of Miami as we welcome you back to action.
23:12What can you say?
23:13LeBron James, what an impressive effort today.
23:17And what was most impressive was that his decision-making and shot-taking was very disciplined
23:22and efficient.
23:23Really an excellent half.
23:24Yeah, that's exactly right.
23:26Whether it's been from mid-range or in tight, he's taking only what the defense has given
23:30him, and he's not trying to do too much.
23:32I love the flow and rhythm he's playing with here.
23:35Haslam and Bosh up front.
23:37Chalmers and D. Wade are the guards.
23:39And it's LeBron in at the three slot.
23:41So that's where Eric Spolster starts the second half with.
23:44Young's shot is off.
23:47The Heat shooting a mind-boggling 79% off the floor.
23:52A lot of people thought the East would be a cakewalk for Miami last year, but Indiana
23:57made sure that wasn't going to be the case.
23:59What a series with the Pacers using their size and strength to pound Miami down low.
24:05And eventually the Heat were able to pull it out, but boy, was that a tough series.
24:10Now here's Nash.
24:12He's had some playing time, but no scoring yet from him.
24:16Kamen kicks to Young.
24:20Here's Kobe.
24:22And so he draws the foul on the shot.
24:25A trip to the line to shoot two.
24:27And just a touchback on the Eastern Conference Finals.
24:30Went to a game seven where Miami ran away with the game.
24:34But you know, Clark, if it weren't for the heroics of LeBron earlier in the series, it
24:38could have been the Pacers that took on San Antonio in the finals.
24:41You know, I was thinking a little bit about two former ABA teams meeting in the NBA Finals,
24:47but the Heat managed to steal game one.
24:49And I thought that proved to be the difference in the end.
24:52That was a game the Pacers had and didn't squeeze.
24:55But the way these two teams are constructed, they should be seeing a lot more of each other
25:00in the near future.
25:01And I think that's great for the league because whenever they meet up in the regular season
25:04or the playoffs, it's always been a battle the last couple of years.
25:08Nice rivalry developing between those two.
25:11Good one brewing there.
25:16And Kobe drops them both.
25:19Guys, for Kobe Bryant last season, you talk about adversity.
25:22I mean, the coaching change, the team struggle, and finally, once they started to get back
25:28on track right at the end of the season, he tears his Achilles tendon.
25:32Tough break.
25:34And for Kobe Bryant, the completely torn Achilles tendon.
25:38You wonder if his big minutes contributed.
25:41At age 34, he's second in the league, for instance, in minutes played.
25:44He averaged almost 46 minutes a game in the seven games leading up to the injury.
25:49And this is a guy that, when he is on the floor, high torque at all times.
25:54Well, there's no evidence that playing all those minutes led to the injury.
25:57We know that the Lakers were in a huge battle for a playoff spot, so it's easy to see why
26:02the coaching staff decided to ride him like that.
26:04But it does make you wonder, at his age, you know, was that just too much for him?
26:20All three throws good from Bosh.
26:23Well, for the Lakers last season, it seemed there was so much turmoil throughout the year.
26:29Injuries, coaching-wise, changes in the offense.
26:33They never were able to really gain any momentum.
26:36They made a decent run at the end of the season, but that didn't carry over into the postseason
26:40when they were swept by the Lakers in the first round.
26:43He can be a forgotten man in their offense sometimes, but, you know, the defense still needs
26:47to keep an eye on him.
26:50Wade dishes to Aslan.
26:54And there's the whistle, fouled hard on the shot.
26:57He'll go to the line.
26:59I think, going back to D'Antoni and the Lakers, that Howard and Gasol were made more than a
27:04little disgruntled with how Clark he made use or didn't make use of them offensively.
27:09You know, the Lakers brought in D'Antoni to try to emphasize Steve Nash and his role
27:13in the offense, but I think they neglected how that would affect the seven-footers.
27:17Didn't do a really good job of incorporating those guys, and when you've got Colby getting
27:21his shots, that's a tough dynamic to work through.
27:25Well, really the heart and soul of this Miami team in a lot of ways, Udonis Haslam, born
27:30and raised in Miami.
27:31He's played his entire decade-long career with the Heat and just a tough, hard-working
27:36guy and a locker room leader.
27:40No good on the second free throw.
27:42And back to Haslam.
27:44He helped lift the Florida Gators program back to Providence.
27:46Took them all the way to the NCAA championship game, playing at center of all positions.
27:50It was really heavy back then at Florida.
27:53He had to lose a lot of weight before he was ready to play in the NBA.
27:56Went to Europe to play first.
27:58He's been the heart and soul of the Heat organization ever since.
28:02Timeout called the Heat.
28:04Well, what a series it was in the finals a year ago.
28:07Such great basketball.
28:09Two teams that like to play up-tempo.
28:11And I'll tell you, the Spurs had Miami.
28:14They had the series in the back.
28:16They were one play away from wrapping it up in game six.
28:19But the miracle comeback from the Heat that led to the game seven victory and another title
28:25for the Miami Heat.
28:26Let's catch up with Doris from the sideline.
28:28Well, guys, I was able to listen in on what Eric Spolster was going over with his team
28:33in that last huddle.
28:34Their fast-break offense has been lacking, in his opinion.
28:37And he let his players know about it.
28:38Look for them to really start pushing the basketball.
28:41He added one more thing as well, which was that he wants them driving the lane
28:45and taking the ball strong to the hoop at every opportunity.
28:48Perhaps the rest of the second half will look different after those adjustments, Kevin.
28:52And thank you for that, Doris.
28:55The part that was interesting because the games themselves weren't particularly close
28:59through the first half of the series.
29:01But things started to get really tight when they left San Antonio after game five.
29:06How about that, Kevin?
29:07You talk about things tightening up.
29:09We had a game for the ages in game six.
29:1328.6 seconds to go.
29:16The Spurs plus five.
29:18Miami needed a miracle.
29:19And they found it in the form of timely three-point shooting
29:23and got some help from the San Antonio Spurs, missing some free throws.
29:28The game six was about as intense an NBA game as you'll ever see.
29:31Oh, it was off the charts.
29:33Absolutely fantastic.
29:52And he misses the second one as well, so he is 0 for 2 that time.
29:55How about the night LeBron is having?
29:57He has 11 points, and from long range, he's hit one three-pointer.
30:01Yeah, and you'd expect by the end of this game, I'm sure the numbers are going to look even better.
30:05Heyman's shot is good.
30:09Into the third we go.
30:10Two minutes in now.
30:12Guys are looking for a spark here.
30:14Yeah, I mean, a cold stretch offensively.
30:16They desperately need a basket.
30:19Chalmers best to Bosh.
30:21Gasol with the steal.
30:22And now he's with a clear pass to the hoop.
30:25Finished off the break.
30:27And now a nine-point Laker lead.
30:29Boy, they've gone on this run, and ball movement has been a big key.
30:32Yeah, they have the defense on the run right now, because every pass seems to have a purpose.
30:37They're getting great movement, great spacing, and they're really lining them up defensively.
30:41Kobe with it.
30:42Wade picks him up.
30:43Young for three.
30:45And again, Los Angeles with a triple.
30:47All these open threes they're giving up have really been the driving force of this run.
30:51I agree, guys.
30:53And the points add up in a hurry when you start giving up easy looks from long range.
30:57Bosh with the bucket.
30:59I think he's been kind of passive today.
31:01And, you know, maybe that one will get him going.
31:03I think for them to be successful, he needs to be the one to do the bulk of the score.
31:07Gasol.
31:08There it is.
31:09It's Nash picking up the assists.
31:11And it's seven points for Pau Gasol.
31:14You know, there's no better sign of how efficiently a team is operating than their assist numbers.
31:19And theirs are fantastic.
31:21It's just beautiful basketball to watch, Mark.
31:23James misses.
31:25You know, for Pau Gasol, calling last year a rough year might be an understatement.
31:29He fought off an injury and tried to find a role on the team that was in transition.
31:34A year like that can really take a lot out of a guy.
31:37Man, what a move there to lose his man.
31:40I'll tell you what.
31:40Getting his defender on his heels and then taking care of the rest with ease.
31:45A little under two and a half minutes off the clock now here in the third.
31:51It's LeBron with the drive.
31:53No good.
31:54Good work defensively by Kobe.
31:56And here's Los Angeles.
31:58They're on a 19-5 run.
32:01And Steve for Pau Gasol.
32:02He dealt with needs and denitis from the first day of the season.
32:05Then a concussion.
32:07Torn plantar fascia.
32:09I mean, he just hit one setback.
32:11It seemed health-wise after another.
32:12It was just that kind of season, which symbolized the fate of his Lakers, too.
32:17They just never seemed to get it going until it was too late.
32:21But, you know, with Gasol, we're talking about a guy who's remained effective for a long time in his career.
32:27And when you have that kind of skill level, I think your game can translate as you get older.
32:32Here's Nash after the made shot from Solman.
32:35The inside shot is off from Pau Gasol.
32:41Kicks it to Wade.
32:42Kobe with the steal.
32:45Here's Kamen.
32:46Powered down.
32:47After the assist, let him into the lane.
32:49I'd say that shot was well within his range.
32:52You think so?
32:53I mean, I was pretty good from two feet and in myself.
32:56That's a gimme there.
32:57Now, here is Haslam.
33:01Now, the feed to Bosch.
33:04Unloads from nine.
33:05Shot's good.
33:07Bosch has got 11.
33:091-10 left in the third quarter.
33:12Nash with it.
33:13Now, guarded by Chalmers.
33:15Nash gets to Kobe.
33:20Left side, Bryant.
33:22And it's blocked by Wade.
33:27Feeds to LeBron.
33:29Back to Wade.
33:32He kicks to Bosch.
33:37There's 42 seconds left here in the third quarter.
33:40And that one's good.
33:42Bosch has got eight points in the quarter.
33:45Los Angeles leading by 12.
33:50And here's Nash.
33:58Dishes to Gasol.
34:01Down to five on the shot clock.
34:03And that'll be the Lakers as it goes out of bounds.
34:06Lakers retain possession.
34:08Big group substitution here for the Lakers.
34:10Hill, he's checked in for Kamen.
34:12Johnson comes in for Young.
34:14Steve Blake's checked in for Bryant.
34:17And it's Farmar in for Steve Nash.
34:19Four on the clock.
34:22D2 from Hill.
34:24Busts the J after the cagey pass fake.
34:27Hill's got his second basket of the night.
34:29They've stepped up their three-point shooting game in the second half.
34:32They're letting it fly out there with reckless abandonment.
34:35Now, they're feeling confident.
34:36And they're in a good flow offensively.
34:38So, why not just keep firing from out there?
34:41Took advantage of some shoddy defense there.
34:43They've got to at least get a finger on it.
34:46Here's Farmar.
34:49Second-gen shot.
34:50And, oh, he hits the buzzer, Peter.
34:53What a big bonus for them to end the quarter as he beats the buzzer.
34:57Talk about maximizing every last possession you've got.
35:00Right there, it was done.
35:02And as we end the third quarter, a double-digit deficit will make it tough to come back.
35:07Los Angeles on top.
35:08They lead by 14.
35:10And after a quick break, we're going to come right back with the start of the fourth quarter.
35:18And here at the end of the third quarter, it's a double-digit ball game.
35:21And it's time now to reveal our state farm assist to the game.
35:25Today, Steve, it's a big man winning the honor.
35:27And it was a no-brainer.
35:28This assist was really out of this world.
35:30He had a great understanding of the situation and where the ball had to go.
35:34She's a commitment to the soul.
35:52She's a commitment to the soul.
35:55The Heat trail by 14.
35:57All fueled up and ready to go.
35:59Let's reset the lineups courtesy of Gatorade for the fourth quarter.
36:02Gatorade taking a look at Los Angeles.
36:05Kyle Gasol is out there with Johnson.
36:06Then there's Farmar.
36:08And it's Steve Blake.
36:09And it's Hill in at the five spot.
36:11Good rebound there.
36:12But overall, they're getting outworked on the glass.
36:15Steve, I think that's what you'd expect, seeing what the score is.
36:19Here's Farmar.
36:22Hill dishes to Blake.
36:25And Ray Allen gets the whistle that time.
36:28That's his first foul.
36:29First-team foul.
36:30First-team foul.
36:42Miami on defense.
36:44The pass to Farmar.
36:46Takes a three.
36:47Good!
36:48And the assist goes to Blake.
36:50Farmar's got the first basket as we get going in the fourth for the Lakers.
36:54Heat shooting nearly 70% from the floor.
36:57They're putting on a clinic offensively.
37:00One, two, three.
37:01Good, sir.
37:01How we go?
37:03How we go?
37:05Let's go!
37:06Anderson outside.
37:08Pass to Battier.
37:09He dishes it to James.
37:11Just five to shoot.
37:16So he gets the whistle.
37:17Contact on the way up.
37:18And two shots coming up.
37:21Well, you know, you look at LeBron James, maybe more than any other player in NBA history,
37:25he's great in a way that transcends position.
37:28Size, skill, savvy, know-how.
37:31I mean, he's got it all.
37:48And he knocks down the first one.
37:50And we're going to talk about LeBron's ability to really play any position on the floor.
37:54When you look back, has, Steve, there ever been a player you could say that about?
37:59I'm not sure if you could say that about both ends of the floor.
38:02I mean, there's a lot of great defensive players who could guard everybody.
38:06You know, Scotty Pippen or Dennis Rodman.
38:08Offensively, Magic Johnson could play any position he wanted.
38:11But to be able to do so at both ends is what separates LeBron James.
38:17So he picks up just one from the line that time.
38:21Well, a coaching carousel for the Lakers last season.
38:24They made it only five games before firing Mike Brown.
38:28Then they decided to go in a new direction.
38:30And, boy, they went through three different head coaches before all was said and done.
38:34They never really were able to gain that consistency they were looking for.
38:39Johnson, good.
38:41Unselfish basketball on the interior.
38:43I love that.
38:44And you've got to think the coaching staff does, too.
38:47Timeout called the heat.
38:49And back to the Lakers' struggles last season.
38:51What do you think, Clark, were the main problems that, you know, held him back from being the kind of
38:55title contender that they thought they were and a lot of people imagined they were?
38:59Well, how much time do I have?
39:01Three or four shot clocks worth?
39:02I mean, I think there were a number of issues, as you might expect.
39:05Injuries played a significant role.
39:07But I think there was discord over how they should play.
39:10Really no true identity.
39:12They were a big team trying to be small.
39:15A team without a number of shooters trying to spread the floor.
39:19Older team trying to go up-tempo.
39:21Coaching change.
39:21Coaching change, right, yes.
39:23You had a lot of moving parts.
39:25And it made it very difficult for everybody, I think.
39:28And it showed in how the Lakers' season went.
39:30That's a good assessment.
39:31And the rebounding numbers don't actually tell the whole story.
39:33I mean, they're barely ahead in that category, but when they've needed them, they've gotten them, they've really battled hard.
39:39It's their work on the glass, Steve, that's prevented any kind of momentum swing.
39:43Let's go quickly over to Dorisburg for an update.
39:46Hey, Kevin, I was able to hear the advice Mike D'Antoni gave to his team during that break.
39:51He told the huddle they need to go hard to the hoop whenever possible to either draw fouls or get
39:56high percentage looks right at the tin.
39:59So coach waiting until the final stages to pull a few tricks out of his sleeve.
40:03Kevin, let's see if he's made a wise decision.
40:06And as always, Doris, thank you.
40:20That free throw, no good.
40:22Kobe having just a fantastic game.
40:24He has 15 points, and he's created a lot of chances for his teammates also.
40:28And some of these passes have been absolutely beautiful, Clark.
40:44And he sinks the second.
40:50Here's Chalmers.
40:56Passes it to Wade.
40:58He checked it by Young.
41:04Bosch against Kobe.
41:06Kamen inside.
41:07That's good.
41:08And it's Kobe with the assist.
41:11Kobe's got five assists tonight.
41:13And now we'll get a perspective here on the hustle game.
41:16How it's been going for Los Angeles.
41:18You know, blocked shots, guys, a clear indicator on the stat sheet of their excellent defense.
41:23I mean, leaving them no room to get off any shots.
41:26The other thing they're doing, guys, is forcing turnovers and then creating points offensively as a result.
41:35Nash, the pass to Bryant.
41:40Pass to Young.
41:42The dish to Gasol.
41:45Bryant with a screen for Gasol.
41:47It's Kobe Bryant on the way.
41:48And that's going to be out of bounds.
41:50Los Angeles will retain possession.
41:52He had no choice but to lunge for that pass to stop it from getting through.
41:56Well, that was a good job.
41:57It could have been a quick bucket if he doesn't knock it out of bounds there.
42:04Clock is at three.
42:06Let's it go.
42:08Wade with the defensive effort.
42:10The heat trail by 19.
42:15Wade right side.
42:17The drive by LeBron.
42:19That's good.
42:20It's kind of his strong suit.
42:21The ability to find his way through the defense and finish at the rim.
42:26And we're about three and a half minutes into the fourth quarter.
42:31Los Angeles calls timeout.
42:33Well, he's got to get everybody on the same page.
42:35I mean, that's the reason for this timeout.
42:36And if that happens, I think they can improve and start playing better.
42:40You know, it's a coach's job to always try to be two or three steps ahead of the opponent
42:45and to look for that extra edge if you can.
42:47And I think he feels like he might have seen one.
43:02And the Lakers have possession.
43:05They've only given up five points here in the fourth quarter.
43:14The defense just couldn't recover in time.
43:16Yeah, but he pretty much went brain neutral on that one, Clark.
43:20Wouldn't you?
43:21Yes, sir.
43:21I like that phrase.
43:22Yeah, I don't use that phrase very often.
43:23But to me, that's what happened.
43:25He shifted the brain into neutral.
43:27Yes, he did.
43:28That was embarrassing.
43:31Here's Haslam after the basket by the Lakers.
43:39Lock it six.
43:40Back to Wade.
43:44Wade left side.
43:47Gasol with the rebound.
43:49Gasol's got five rebounds tonight.
43:54Nash against Haslam.
43:56Nash dishes to Gasol.
44:01He feeds it to Kobe.
44:03Back to Gasol.
44:05Bryant with it.
44:06He's picked up by LeBron.
44:08A drive by Bryant.
44:09And good on the basket.
44:11Book it.
44:12Kobe's got five points now this quarter.
44:14He's created some good opportunities for himself and made the most of them.
44:18Well, guys, this was never really a contest.
44:20Just total obliteration.
44:22And you can safely say, mission accomplished now for Los Angeles.
44:25Steve, you know, you don't see this kind of a blowout often.
44:29But tonight, this is a quality win across the board to deliver out this kind of punishment.
44:36Well, you know what?
44:37I thought they did a nice job of playing against the game.
44:40They kept the pressure on and clearly were dominant in every area.
44:44And what a huge standout performance it was for Bryant.
44:47Every time he shot it, it seemed like it was just going to drop in and nobody was surprised.
44:53And again, it's the Lakers.
44:55Well, if it wasn't already out of reach, it is now thanks to this spurt.
44:58Just keep on firing, man.
44:59No reason to slow down now.
45:04James up top, defended by Young.
45:09Aslam, the pass to LeBron.
45:13Out to Wade.
45:14Out to Wade.
45:15Out to Wade.
45:16Out to Wade.
45:19Knocked away.
45:21Young with the steal.
45:23Up the floor.
45:25Foul call that time on the way up.
45:27That'll give him two chances at the free throw line here.
45:32You know, it's interesting.
45:33Part of the reason Nash struggled getting used to playing with the Lakers
45:37is because he was always the guy making the offense go.
45:40The offense ran through him with his prior teams.
45:42You know, at one point in his career, Nash was known more for his shooting than anything else.
45:47An interesting turnabout in his career.
45:54First free throw is good.
45:56And for Steve Nash, one of the great playmakers and pick and roll operators in league history.
46:00And Steve, you think it makes sense for the Lakers to take him off the ball?
46:04Well, it just depends on what the rest of the roster looks like.
46:07But last season, because they really didn't want to run their offense through their bigs inside,
46:12it forced the ball into Kobe Bryant's hands more.
46:15And Nash became more of a spot-off shooter as a result.
46:22And Nash makes both of them.
46:24You know, people look at Steve Nash, guys,
46:27and I don't know if they automatically think tremendous athlete.
46:30But he is.
46:31He's a different type of tremendous athlete.
46:34He's not going to blind you or amaze you with his running and jumping ability.
46:39But it's his agility, his coordination, his balance,
46:43the fact that he's ambidextrous, not only with his hands, but with his feet.
46:48I mean, he's equally balanced going either way with the ball or on his pivots.
46:53And he attributes a lot of that to playing soccer and ice hockey as a youth.
47:01And so it's the Lakers taking care of business here.
47:04You know, Clark, every team has a bad night.
47:06And these guys might want to watch the tape of this game the next time they have a bad night
47:10to remind themselves how dominant they can be.
47:12Well, this is one of those dreamlike games for a coach.
47:17And now we'll send it down to Doris Bernacu standing by courtside.
47:23Kevin, I'm here with Steve Nash.
47:25Going into tonight's game, you are facing a huge challenge
47:28going up against one of the best teams in the NBA right now.
47:31How good does it feel to get this one?
47:34I think it's a great lesson for all of our young guys about building a team,
47:38trying to figure out combinations and sticking together and continuing to play
47:41and finding a way to make it work.
47:43Even though, you know, teams might have better rosters,
47:46you know, we found a way to be resilient and we play pretty good basketball.
47:50Steve, we appreciate the time.
47:52Kevin?
47:52Thank you, Doris, for that.
47:54And now for Clark Kellogg, Steve Kerr, and Doris Burke.
47:56This is Kevin Harland saying,
47:58see you next time as we present our Jordan player of the game, Kobe Bryant.
48:12We'll see you next time.
48:33And then you live in between is the real test.
48:35It starts in the mind, end with the soul.
48:38So I get cray on the net of every go.
48:40Sliding on my knees and I'm praying to the Lord.
48:43Begging, begging, please let this will be yours.
48:46Who knew I opened up this can of sales?
48:49It was always true, I rap better than a Santa's elves.
48:51I need it all.
48:52Don't try to give me half.
48:53This is for who said I never will and never have.
49:03He P
49:04He P
