00:00This contract for Alec Pierce is mind-blowing.
00:03Guys had 1,000-yard season, Carl.
00:06One.
00:06One!
00:07He's going to get the highest-paid, most guaranteed money of any wide receiver.
00:11A four-year, $114 million deal just dropped.
00:1328.5 per.
00:16And the only reason this matters is because we got a guy on our team
00:19that is going to be getting a new deal sooner than later.
00:23And is better than him.
00:24He's better.
00:24He's better.
00:26I'll ride with Drake any day of the week.
00:28And, yeah, so, look, I said to Day-Day, because Day-Day was like,
00:32what are you willing to do there?
00:34Look, it's not my money.
00:35Sorry, Arthur Blink.
00:37But at the end of the day, you've got to manage this in a way where I want to be
00:41fair,
00:42but I also don't want to overpay.
00:43And what I mean by that is, as much as I love Drake, he's not the best receiver in the
00:47league.
00:47He's also only had 1,000 yards using his own because he missed some time.
00:50The injury.
00:51The injuries, et cetera.
00:52So, I don't want to give him $35 million, which the Justin Jeffersons of the world are getting, okay?
01:00But I also want to be fair.
01:01And when you look at this deal and you go 28.5 per, like, I think if you asked right
01:08now,
01:08Drake, would he take this deal, Mike, my guess would be yeah, but they're going to be asking for more.
01:12They are going to be asking for 30 per easily.
01:15That's why, I mean, maybe I was kind of used to how Thomas Dimitrov used to operate with it,
01:19but I always felt like going into last season that Drake should have gotten his contract extension.
01:23Get ahead of it?
01:24Yeah.
01:24Because, you know, we had talked, I think it was, I mentioned to you, was it Garrett Wilson?
01:27Yeah, Garrett, or Jets.
01:29Jets wide receiver.
01:29Yes.
01:30Got his deal, and I thought that was a good time to kind of maybe go in that same neighborhood
01:33for Drake.
01:34But you're right.
01:35I mean, now the one thing is, looking at the Drake's numbers, I think that Drake is a consummate professional.
01:40Nine touchdowns two years ago, seven last year with the injury time missed.
01:43Only 68 receptions, 100, 1,200 yards in 2024.
01:47But either way, I still, you know, eye test-wise, I would put him up there, certainly more athletic, more
01:53everything,
01:54than Alec Pierce, who just got the highest paid contract of all time for a wide receiver.
01:58So he won't get paid.
01:59Yeah, well, all time, when you say all time, he's not making more per year than...
02:03No, but the guaranteed portion.
02:04Gotcha.
02:05More guaranteed money than any other wide receivers got.
02:07Yeah, because I was going to say, the per annual, the annual value and the annual average is what guys
02:12look at.
02:12The guarantee is one thing.
02:14Obviously, the life of the contract, a lot of times, guys, you don't get there because, you know, the guaranteed
02:21money.
02:21Is he going to be there four years?
02:22We'll see.
02:2384 million in guarantees, 60 million guaranteed at signing.
02:2760 mil.
02:27Yeah.
02:28Dude, it's where the NFL is.
02:30It is.
02:31Hey, I want to remind you guys also, as we're talking about all the things that are going on with
02:37our radio station,
02:38we are the home of men's and women's college basketball,
02:41and you're going to be able to listen all month long to exclusive play-by-play coverage for the tournament.
02:46It's brought to you locally by Chattanooga Whiskey, named America's Craft Producer of the Year,
02:51by Whiskey Magazine, and by Trajan Wealth, your local trusted fiduciary advisors, guys.
02:56That's college hoops, college championships, all that you want right here through April 6th on Sports Radio 92.9 The
03:02Game.
03:03Mike, it brings us to, we've got to talk a little bit about it before we get to some guy
03:06talk,
03:06and that is what Georgia Tech did, and that is fire Damon Stoudemire.
03:09We had a great conversation with Wes Durham.
03:11If you missed it, Wes, who was the voice of Georgia Tech for many years,
03:14was talking about the allocation of the money and how this is going to be divvied up
03:18and where do they want to go with how they're going to treat basketball.
03:21But more importantly, Mike, how you spend the money that you have on the players that you need to bring
03:27in to be successful.
03:28Right, and I just wonder, I mean, where are you going to find your next, I mean, I don't mean
03:32this as a Weisenheimer,
03:33there's always somebody looking for a job in the ACC, it's still an elite coaching job in a major city.
03:38But I mean, you've gone too many mid-majors, like Josh Pasture had coached at big programs,
03:43but still, I mean, Brian Gregory, you know, we just talked about Stoudemire had been to the smaller school,
03:47you and I thought it was a sexy hire, the question was always going to be,
03:50is Stoudemire's brand, is that going to make a connection with the younger generation
03:55and will he be able to get the transfer portal in there?
03:57I don't know, does it matter if you play in the NBA or not, if you can't get the boosters
04:00to cut those checks?
04:01No, and look, I think this is a tale for schools or ADs that think,
04:08hey, I'll just go get an NBA guy because it makes sense, we're more NBA now than we are anything.
04:13Mike, you've got to get guys that can coach.
04:14But more importantly, coach guys for one year and make them better.
04:18Because that's really what this portal has done.
04:20Just like with college football, you're seeing turnover.
04:23And by the way, it's not 90 guys like with college football.
04:26You know, you're not losing 40 guys in some cases.
04:29You lose four guys in a college basketball program, that's turnover, right?
04:34So I think when you look at it, and these are just examples of guys that have made this jump
04:41and you go, he wasn't really on my radar because, again, most of us don't pay that hardcore attention
04:47to college basketball.
04:48But Dustin May at Michigan, Mike, was at FAU.
04:50Nobody was watching him when he was at FAU.
04:53He goes to Michigan after, after Juwan, who was legendary at Michigan, and it was a disaster.
05:01And look where Michigan is.
05:03They're going to contend for potentially a national championship.
05:05So you come in after it's down, and you're able to build it back up in a very short period
05:10of time.
05:11I think Wes mentioned Todd Golden at Florida.
05:13Like, these are the examples that Georgia Tech should be looking at instead of trying to go higher.
05:18Maybe the splash, which sounds good, but go give me a guy that can really blanking coach.
05:22Well, that's just it.
05:23I mean, the thing about Mike White, and I think, again, Mike White gave you the finish of the season
05:27we've been looking for for the last couple of years.
05:28Yes.
05:29And now hopefully, don't lose the first round in the SEC tournament.
05:32But keep on building on that because now they've locked in, they're secure in the tournament.
05:35But for Georgia Tech, I got here at the end of Bobby Kremen's run.
05:38Historic program, Paul Hewitt went to a Final Four.
05:41You've had one trip to March Madness in 15 years.
05:44It's not enough.
05:44That's insane.
05:45Not enough!
05:46In Atlanta.
05:47I mean, like I said, it's one thing if you're in some backwater.
05:49You're in Atlanta.
05:50So I said Bruce Pearl just because I felt like, you know, in case of emergency, break glass and go
05:54for the big splash.
05:55But you're right.
05:56Where is that guy?
05:58And I think, you know, I think another coach, will you come in here?
06:01You're more about he's interviewing you than you're interviewing him.
06:04About what are you giving me?
06:05To your point about what Wes said.
06:07Yes.
06:07Are you giving me the resources in the modern college basketball world to go do what I need to do?
06:11No doubt.
06:12I'll give you all that money going to football or do I get a piece of the action?
06:14I need a little bit.
06:16And by the way, every school in the SEC is doing this.
06:19Now, the crazy thing is the SEC has become a great basketball conference.
06:22But, Mike, you're divvying this money up.
06:25And, look, some of these basketball programs are getting more than what they have in the past because these ADs
06:29and these programs are realizing, hey, there's value in also having a great basketball program.
06:36Tommy Lloyd, you guys know who he is?
06:37He's in Arizona now.
06:39Two decades under Mark Few at Gonzaga.
06:43Nobody knew who he was.
06:44Spent two decades there, Mike.
06:46Goes to Arizona.
06:47Arizona may be the best team in the country.
06:49Those are the kind of guys that you need to be trying to go get.
06:52Because a guy just hit me up and says Bobby Hurley's about to get.
06:53But Bobby Hurley only did it this last year.
06:55Bobby's been struggling.
06:56He has.
06:56And Bobby, again, they're just fighting to get, you know, he'll have to make a run through the tournament and
07:01all that.
07:01Yep.
07:02I mean, I got to.
07:03When is the Big 12 tournament?
07:04Is it already happening?
07:04No, it's all the tournaments are this week.
07:06But he basically needs to win that out just to get an automatic bid.
07:10Yeah.
07:10All the tournaments are going down this week.
07:11Selection Sunday.
07:12And that's Arizona State.
07:13Yes.
07:13And then next week the tournament starts on Tuesday with the play-in and all that stuff.
07:17It's Dukes and Bales Sports Radio 92.9 The Game.
07:20Mike, what do we have coming up in Guy Talk?
07:22What don't we have, Carl?
07:23What don't we have?
07:24It's busy, man.
07:24I'll tell you that.
07:25We'll give you the latest.
07:26Again, the latest on the free agency, of course, coming up and more on that in the Falcon Report 5.
07:29But next.
07:30Have you seen?
07:31The internet nearly spun off its axis and blew up last night.
07:34Did you see what was going on in Vegas?
07:36What was going on in Vegas?
07:37Joe Burrow playing blackjack with Jessica Alba.
07:40Did I miss that?
07:41Yes, you did.
07:42That's why we haven't heard Guy Talk.
07:43Also coming up, I could have posted something, Carl.
07:47You'd have thought I posted something about politics the other day.
07:50You will not believe, Day Day, the response I got to trimming crepe myrtles.
07:55Some would say crepe murderer.
07:58You trimmed crepe myrtles?
08:00Crepe murder, according to some.
08:02You know, you heard of the PETA, people for the ethical treatment of animals?
08:05I guess there's PTF, people for the ethical treatment of ferns or something.
08:10Anyway, we'll come back.
08:10It's all coming up at Guy Talk.
