The market for refurbished IT hardware is growing. Consumers and companies are buying used devices that have been restored, cleaned and tested. It's cheaper for them, and it helps their sustainibility efforts and carbon footprint.
Transcript
00:00At CHG Meridian's massive Frankfurt facility, one million IT devices are being refurbished every year.
00:09Most of them previously rented or leased by large companies and now two to five years old.
00:16They're inspected and cleaned. On average, 94% are in good condition and can be reused.
00:27The demand for used IT equipment is growing as more IT is needed worldwide and there are certain sectors where
00:34used IT is appropriate and the latest technology isn't required.
00:40Data, of course, is a sensitive issue. It's erased as the very first step.
00:46Employees then document any external damage after which the internal hardware is tested. No need to even open the devices.
00:54There's a testing program for this, which means all features are checked by software.
01:00We receive error messages and based on those we know what to do.
01:06In a recent survey, Digital Association Bitkom found that 16% of companies are now using so-called refurbished IT.
01:15The growth potential is considered significant.
01:19Only 5% of companies fundamentally reject refurbished IT, which means there's definitely more potential and we see that it
01:27offers two major benefits, economically due to lower cost and ecologically due to the smaller footprint.
01:38Like here at Umweltruck in Berlin. The printing company is fully committed to sustainable production. It uses environmentally friendly inks
01:47and papers and refurbished IT equipment in the offices.
01:53It's primarily about sustainability. We want to operate as sustainably as possible and that means considering how we can do
02:00that in all areas.
02:04Initially, they worried the devices would break down quickly or couldn't be updated. These concerns turned out to be unfounded.
02:12The refurbished hardware even came with the usual warranties.
02:15In the end, we're happy because we not only operate sustainably, but also because it's cost-effective. These refurbished items
02:24are also less expensive than purchasing new ones.
02:31Companies can save up to 50% on acquisition costs, says the refurbisher. For Umweltruck, the switch pays off in
02:39another way too. Their customers are also pleased.
02:42Yes.
02:42I could love to learn about the refurbisher.
02:43...that they were well...
02:45... inhalinged as well.
02:47... of the laborious ones said.
