00:01Welcome to Chateau DIY Win The Dream,
00:04the ultimate renovation showdown.
00:06Whose idea was this?
00:08Come on, mine.
00:09Take it over me.
00:11Over four thrilling weeks, creativity meets competition.
00:14That looks wicked, doesn't it?
00:15Perfect fit. Oh, my gosh.
00:18As determined duos battle it out to prove.
00:21I'm having an absolute nightmare.
00:23They've got the vision, skill and grit
00:25to win the ultimate prize.
00:26I haven't got a clue.
00:27I can cry. I can literally cry.
00:30The keys to this breathtaking French property.
00:34Set on the outskirts of a Normandy nature park,
00:37the property boasts six bedrooms, four bathrooms,
00:42two salons, five additional rooms to renovate,
00:45perfectly pruned gardens, stunning outbuildings,
00:49its very own orchard and even a historic bread oven.
00:53It's a lot to play for and if we lose, I'll be fuming.
00:56Three heats and a grand finale where only the best will rise.
01:01Oh!
01:02All the pairs have to do is show they have the renovation know-how
01:06to impress me and various guest judges from Chateau DIY.
01:10I think this is really creative.
01:12What a transformation.
01:14In weekly challenges designed to push their creativity and skills to the limit.
01:19The clock is ticking.
01:20Win the week and they secure their spot in the grand finale.
01:24The dream is real, the stakes are high.
01:26This is Chateau DIY Win The Dream.
01:39Welcome to heat three of Chateau DIY Win The Dream.
01:43This week we see four pairs of contestants competing for a chance
01:47to win this wonderful property in North West France.
01:51Over the next week, our pairs will compete in a series of renovation challenges.
01:55At the end of the week, only one pair will remain, advancing to the grand finale.
02:00Let's go meet this week's teams.
02:10We've got rose bushes.
02:12As soon as we walked in, my mind was running wild
02:15and just thinking about all the different events that we can do.
02:18You were saying about the potential of Hoxton Weddings the second you saw it, didn't you?
02:22I'm excited.
02:24It would be a dream come true, really.
02:26I've got the tingles, it's given me the tingles.
02:28Yeah, definitely.
02:29We are in this to win it.
02:31Yeah.
02:31Game's on.
02:33Let's all stay here, yeah?
02:36It's very different from London, but it's such a breath of fresh air.
02:39It kind of feels like you're on a love story.
02:42It's very romantic here.
02:44That looks amazing.
02:46To win something like this would be the dream.
02:49The kids are just, yeah, they're a bit annoyed they're not getting a holiday this year,
02:53because we're here.
02:54Yeah.
02:54So, yeah, they would love it.
03:05Hello, and welcome to Win The Dream,
03:07where you'll be competing to win this beautiful French property.
03:12But it's not going to be easy.
03:14To claim the keys, you've got to prove to me and various guest judges from Chateau DIY
03:19that you've got the skill and ability to renovate and maintain a period property.
03:26Are you ready for your first challenge?
03:28Yes!
03:30For this challenge, I'd like you to renovate the ground floor spaces into impressive dining rooms.
03:36Wow.
03:38But you'll be working in two teams of four.
03:41We've randomly selected your partnerships.
03:44So, Stuart and Penny, you'll be working with Priet and Rene.
03:53Andrea and Hayley, you'll be working with Chris and Paloma.
03:56Yay!
03:58You will all be given stripped back spaces to work with.
04:02I'd like you to create a space for evening dining.
04:06Somewhere for guests to enjoy a hearty meal after a day exploring the French countryside.
04:13Your dining room must include a custom-built console table.
04:18And each team will have a thousand euros.
04:22Overall, you'll be judged on concept and creativity, functionality, technical ability and the overall look and finish.
04:31I want you to work as a cohesive team and share the workload throughout.
04:36Whilst you'll be working in your teams to complete the renovation, you'll be judged in your individual pairs.
04:42And remember, one pair will be leaving us at the end of this challenge.
04:47Your briefs and tools are in your room.
04:50Your time starts now.
04:58Ooh, okay.
05:02Challenge set.
05:03It's time for the teams to check out their adjoining ground floor rooms.
05:10I think we've got a task on our hands.
05:12Yeah.
05:14Yeah, it's like a shower.
05:15Interesting, yeah.
05:17Wow.
05:18Oh, wow.
05:19What have we got?
05:20Look at the room.
05:21That's beautiful, actually.
05:22That's lovely.
05:26Oh, I love the stonework.
05:29The lime pair, BAFTA-winning sound designer Stuart and school office manager Penny are no strangers to renovating old buildings,
05:37living in a 300-year-old cottage that throws up a number of DIY challenges of its own.
05:43Wow.
05:43So, you see the entrance walking in, you've got your console table here.
05:46Yeah.
05:47It's something nice and spectacular on that.
05:50Your table and then a nice, your nice wall there.
05:54Winning the chateau would be a dream come true for them and their wider family.
05:59My mum and dad can't holiday because my mum's ill and has been for a long time and I just
06:05think for a place for her to come and for my dad, because he's our carer, to be looked after,
06:10would just, for them, it would be everything.
06:16So, I was just thinking about the stairs, obviously, do you want to make that a statement or do we
06:18want to just keep it plain and simple?
06:21Working alongside them will be the hot pink pair, childhood friends Renee and Priet.
06:27I couldn't think of a better person to do this with.
06:29I feel like we both bring out different sides to each other, so it's really nice.
06:32And, like, she brings out sort of like the calm side of me.
06:36Yeah.
06:36So, it's really nice.
06:36We're like you, yeah, but we know how to, like, work together.
06:39Yeah.
06:40So, that could be a really lovely feature if we do it right.
06:42Mm-hmm.
06:44Hotel manager Priet and Renee, who works at a college, hope to eventually create a wellness retreat at the Chateau
06:50with their own unique twist.
06:55Doing this from scratch, we get to add our own personalities into it, so I'm kind of really excited to
06:59kind of show my personality through my designs as well.
07:04The tangerines and purples are sussing out their space.
07:07I guess because there's no big windows and it's an evening thing, we might want to go a little bit
07:12more, like, dark and moody, cosy feeling.
07:17In Tangerine, a graphic designer, Chris, and Vette Paloma.
07:21They're currently in the midst of renovating a property in South Wales.
07:25We're quite good at working together, but I'm not sure how a different person in the mix is going to
07:29help.
07:29If they throw a tacky idea in my eyes, they're just going to go...
07:34I think we need an inviting floor.
07:36Yes.
07:37I don't know how we're going to achieve that, but...
07:39What about stencils? Like, maybe doing a tile effect?
07:44Teamed up with Chris and Paloma are friends of seven years, Andrea and Hayley.
07:50It's exciting, really, the thought of this being ours and being able to spend time here with our family, our
07:55children, make this our home, invite our friends to stay with us,
07:59which is what we've always said from the beginning, is that we'd want it to be part of our community.
08:05We could, for the ceiling maybe, for like a light fixture, get one of the, like, ladders that are nod
08:11to the apple side of the cooking, and like have that as our main...
08:16Above the table. Above the table.
08:18And then we can hang...
08:19We could dress that.
08:20Yeah.
08:20That with plants and then a lighting fixture that comes a bit lower, possibly.
08:24Shall we get started?
08:25Yeah.
08:28Let's see what we've got.
08:30Right, let's have a look and see what we have.
08:33Oh, we've got a glue gun here.
08:35Oh, glue gun's my favorite.
08:35Yes.
08:36So we're starting on a console table.
08:37I think we should look at where we want it to be placed in the room.
08:41I think you guys mentioned this wall and I'm pretty happy with this wall as well.
08:47I think definitely we can use this area to more of like the sort of the dining area, but this
08:51wall definitely for the console table.
08:53Now we've seen the space, got a bit of a feel for it, let's see what we've got to work
08:57with and I'm sure it'll all come together.
08:59Shall we head to the workshop?
08:59OK, let's go guys.
09:01Let's go.
09:06As well as the toolkits in their rooms, the teams have access to bigger equipment in the workshop, one of
09:12the many outbuildings on the chateau's acre of land.
09:16The workshop is also a treasure trove for useful building materials.
09:20Right.
09:20Right, console table idea.
09:22This looks like a really nice piece of wood.
09:24The shape of that's lovely.
09:26Yeah.
09:26Is it heavy?
09:26Right, if I take this side, you take that side.
09:30You got it?
09:30Here we go.
09:31Here we go.
09:31Put it over on our table.
09:32Right, we need to put it over onto our table.
09:34Woo hoo hoo!
09:36Because those are two very different colours and like textures of wood, do you know what I mean?
09:40That can all be really cleaned up.
09:42You want to get the sander and stuff on that and then you can stain it if you wanted to.
09:45Yeah.
09:45Should we take it in to pull it against the wall and then we'll have a look?
09:48We just wanted this at first, didn't we?
09:50Let's flip it on, that's it.
09:51You got it.
09:51You too, all right?
09:53OK.
09:53Have you seen?
09:55They've gone for the wood.
09:56They've gone for the wood.
09:56They want it.
09:58Fingers crossed they don't take all of it.
10:00It gives us good time to rummage for elsewhere.
10:02With only €1,000 per team for this challenge, the tangerines and purples waste no time sourcing
10:09supplies from the chateau grounds.
10:12They're looking for anything right now, yeah, anything which might be useful in the garden,
10:16which we can put into the dining room.
10:18There's some iron stuff in it.
10:20Oh, let's just grab that, just grab everything.
10:24Competition.
10:25Some planks of wood here.
10:28I'm just hoarding.
10:34Having been quicker to get their hands on the wood, the lime and hot pink team now need
10:39to work out what they're going to do with it.
10:42It is quite big.
10:44You've got to think about how you're going to fix legs onto that.
10:48We like the rustic charm of things, don't we?
10:50So, yeah, that's a good place to start.
10:52Yeah.
10:52We just need to figure out how to make it stand up.
10:54How to make it stand up?
10:56Well, we could just stand here like this, hold it up.
10:58Yeah, yeah.
11:02Over at the workshop, the tangerine and purple team are deciding on the look of their room.
11:07How do you feel about like a maroon or crimson colours, the base colour for the walls and ceiling?
11:13Well, yeah, I love those sorts of colours.
11:16It might really make that rich dining room feeling.
11:19It's a little bit of a darker, more cave-like colour.
11:22Then we can bring in a lot of like candlelight and quite chunky woods.
11:27Cool team.
11:27Let's go!
11:32And en masse, they're off to the local paint store.
11:37So if we've got £1,000, 200 budget on paint, is that going to cover it?
11:43I hope so.
11:44Are we going to go with that red?
11:45It looks quite red.
11:46I was thinking more...
11:48Flummy.
11:50Very red, isn't it?
11:51That looks really pink.
11:52That's pink.
11:54And it's not just wall paint they're after.
11:57What do you think about that for the floor?
11:59A telecarset, yeah.
12:00Yeah.
12:00So they're €4199, so they're €42.
12:04That's €126 on the floor paint.
12:06Yeah, OK.
12:06Mm-hm.
12:08And then the other step was 30.
12:10And we thought three, didn't we?
12:12We'll go just over €200.
12:13We're going to be over, yeah, but it's...
12:15Do you think we'll get away with one tin for the white,
12:17or do you think that's pushing it?
12:19I think that's pushing it.
12:21One's over again.
12:24Now for the moment of truth.
12:26With only €1,000 in the entire pot,
12:29the team has allocated €200 for paint.
12:32How much do you think it's going to cost?
12:35€200.
12:35That's like a fifth of our budget.
12:38Can you see it?
12:393, 4, 4, 87, plus eight of those.
12:46Is that a bit over?
12:48Is that a bit much for our budget?
12:50Well, we needed the paint.
12:51We needed, yeah.
12:52There's nothing we can do about it.
12:53Stop panicking.
12:54Yeah.
12:55I'm a little bit worried that we've just spent 34% of our budget
12:58and it's just the shell of the room that we've got.
13:01Yeah, we don't have that much to go
13:03and we haven't got any furniture, so that's a little bit scary.
13:06Yay!
13:09Hayley and Paloma are planning to head to the Brocante
13:12in search of furniture.
13:15And Chris and Andrea have returned to the chateau
13:17to start painting.
13:20Oh, wow.
13:21Oh, my God.
13:22It better dry darker or it's going to be like...
13:27Could be a bloodbath in here.
13:37We're back in Normandy,
13:39where two teams are busy tackling their first challenge.
13:44Transforming two ground floor storage spaces into sumptuous dining rooms fit for a chateau.
13:50With the goal of winning this amazing French property.
13:55Both teams are cracking on.
13:57Tangerine Chris and Purple Andrea have started their colour drenching.
14:01Oh, my God.
14:02We've gone for it.
14:03I think once it's dry, we'll be able to get the full effects of it.
14:08While lime and hot pink duo Stuart and Priet are in the workshop.
14:12Right.
14:13Goggles on.
14:14Mask on.
14:16Away we go.
14:18One item the teams need to include in their finished dining rooms is a console table.
14:23To create theirs, Priet and Stuart are upcycling wood sourced from the chateau grounds.
14:29It looks better.
14:30Yeah, it looks really good.
14:31Yeah.
14:35How's your hands? Are you alright?
14:37Yeah.
14:37Sometimes I get quite fatiguing.
14:39You can just feel it.
14:45Meanwhile, Penny and Rene have gone shopping.
14:48Too much choice.
14:49Yeah, I know.
14:51The team have decided on a lime wash wall.
14:54But lime wash is expensive.
14:57Fortunately, Penny is resourceful.
14:59You can't have a lime wash wall by using just normal emulsion paint.
15:04You have to start by painting little clouds on the wall and being quite rough with it.
15:11It doesn't have to be with a roller or to be neat.
15:14You just have to have a brush and you sort of, you do little clouds.
15:18So you do like little fluffy clouds over the wall with one colour and then you'd get your second colour
15:22and you would then work on the areas that haven't been touched.
15:25Yeah.
15:26And then you'd work the colours in together.
15:28Yeah.
15:28And then maybe have a little darker one just to add little bits in at the end.
15:33Bonjour.
15:34Bonjour.
15:35Merci.
15:37Having spent over a third of their budget on paint, Paloma and Hayley have bargains on their minds at the
15:45Bracante.
15:46I really want that one but it's sold.
15:48And I bet you it's the other day you just got it.
15:52That's really cool.
15:54Quarante.
15:55Quarante.
15:55Quarante.
15:56Quarante.
15:56Quarante.
15:56Forty.
15:58Ah!
15:59That's exactly what we were looking for.
16:01Women!
16:03Right.
16:03So now let's look for the console, see if there's anything that was in it.
16:08Ooh.
16:11It's just over 105.
16:14We think that this might work for the console.
16:16It's a little bit narrower than we thought we wanted but I think we can make it work.
16:21That's bold.
16:23Messy.
16:24With their budget already under pressure thanks to the paint, they've done well to bags and
16:29bargains.
16:30But they still have a lot more to get for their room.
16:34Those are quite nice for a side plate and they're in the right colour.
16:38Oh, those are so pretty.
16:39How many of those are there?
16:41One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
16:45Yeah, let's get those.
16:46Okay.
16:46Definitely.
16:48Ta-da!
16:50In only 15 minutes, they've bought 50 pieces for just 36 euros.
16:57Au revoir.
16:58Merci.
16:59A bientôt.
17:01Back at the chateau, Andrea and Chris have made an impressive start on the paint job.
17:06We're already through one tub of the three red paints.
17:09Yeah.
17:13Hey.
17:14Wow.
17:15That's red.
17:16What's the thinking behind painting everything that hasn't moved?
17:19Looking for a dining room that feels rich and welcoming when you walk into it.
17:23And we felt this would be a nice deep colour that'll work well in an evening setting with some ambient
17:29lighting.
17:30It's quite a modern technique, isn't it?
17:31Painting the ceiling the same colour as the walls.
17:34Yeah.
17:34It does add a modern touch to everything.
17:36Do you think they're going to be happy when they get back?
17:38The impact of seeing when they left it was white and now it's pretty much red is going to be
17:43quite a transformation, right?
17:45Yeah.
17:45So in terms of the rest of the room, are you happy with all the designs? It's all nailed down?
17:50We've got definitely the foundations of the room. Fleshing it out is going to come from a lot from what
17:56they find at the brocon.
17:57Yeah.
17:58But we're definitely happy with the foundations of the room, we think.
18:00Walls and flooring, we've got a plan, so yeah.
18:04How much did you spend on the paint?
18:07We're over 30% of the budget gone just on paints, aren't we?
18:10Yeah.
18:11Yeah.
18:11What, €300?
18:13Yeah.
18:13On paint?
18:14Yeah.
18:15You're hoping that the others come back and they've made some absolute bargains out.
18:19Yeah.
18:19Sounds like you've got a plan.
18:21Yeah.
18:21Plan.
18:21And a lot more painting to do.
18:24A lot more painting to do.
18:25Rather you than me.
18:26Good luck.
18:27Cheers, Max.
18:28See you later.
18:30In the chateau workshop, Priet and Stuart are having a rummage, looking for inspiration for their console table legs.
18:38If you've got two legs then you can fix it to the wall.
18:41So what you can do is maybe put a strut at the back and then cantilever it over, like a
18:52shelf basically.
18:53It's a low shelf but it's a table.
18:55And we could cut that to curve in there because I quite like that.
18:58That's what I was thinking.
19:00I can't.
19:02And I quite like the texture on it as well.
19:08I like the texture, I do think we might have to paint it though.
19:11No, you're right, okay.
19:12So I think we might maybe have to paint it.
19:15Is there any other way we can think of legs, supports for this?
19:21Because I think we need to play with it a little bit.
19:23Yeah.
19:24To see.
19:25We could try out, I mean the only thing is obviously with flushing it against the wall we'd need to
19:29get brackets.
19:31Yeah.
19:31No way around.
19:32But it's not a table then.
19:33So, yeah, it needs to be, it needs to have legs.
19:35Yeah.
19:36Right.
19:39Meanwhile, Paloma and Hayley are back from the Bracante.
19:43Oh my God!
19:45Hi!
19:46Oh!
19:49Have you got loads of goodies?
19:50That's red, isn't it?
19:52Wow!
19:53We've got a bit of bad news.
19:54What?
19:55You need more paint.
19:56We need more paint.
19:57We're nearing off through the third one.
19:59Well, we've got some good news.
20:01Oh, yeah.
20:02Oh, that's what we need.
20:03Because we've got quite a lot for under 100 euros.
20:07Let's go look at the table.
20:09Let's go look at the table.
20:11You ready?
20:12Oh la la.
20:15Oh, thanks.
20:18The bottom's going to be quite heavier.
20:20Hang on, hang on, hang on.
20:21Right.
20:22OK.
20:22And down.
20:24Whoa!
20:28So...
20:29The thoughts were that we just use this top and put some legs on
20:34and attach it to the wall.
20:36OK.
20:36And it's kind of in keeping with the table.
20:42Ta-da!
20:44Ta-da!
20:44Oh, look at that!
20:45And it pulls out.
20:46And this pulls out.
20:47Hang on, you've got all these under 100 quid.
20:49Yeah.
20:50Yeah.
20:50Well done.
20:51Yeah.
20:54Meanwhile, still in the workshop are Priet and Stuart.
20:57Having sourced and sanded a piece of salvaged oak,
21:00they're working on ideas for the console table legs.
21:04You know, to make things appear simple, there's a lot of work involved in that.
21:08That is very true.
21:09So there's a lot of planning.
21:11Again, more planning.
21:15This looks exciting.
21:17Hey!
21:18How's it going?
21:19Hey!
21:19What are you making?
21:20Well, we're trying to make the legs for our table.
21:24Our console table is obviously what, you know, you're going to be judging us on.
21:29So we're just trying to figure that out at the moment.
21:32Okay.
21:32So what's the plan currently?
21:34So we've found these pieces of floorboards.
21:39So we've gone through many iterations of trying to figure out how to support this heavy piece of woods.
21:44So we've got this strut in the middle that's hopefully going to support these two A-frame legs.
21:51We'll cut those at the angle, screw them onto there and then create a brace in the middle.
21:56So kind of like a trestle table.
21:57Kind of like a trestle console table.
21:59Exactly.
21:59It wasn't what we was initially going to go for, but we do just want to kind of try different
22:05ideas.
22:06We spent the morning actually sanding a fair amount of this off.
22:11So this looked a lot different.
22:12Wow.
22:14So we've revealed the grain in the woods.
22:16Yeah.
22:16That is stunning.
22:17So that took some time.
22:18We're also going to use the piece that we cut off.
22:21Yes, that's the off cut.
22:22As a sort of backdrop.
22:23Nice.
22:24Right.
22:24I can pull this round here and use this as a black back plate.
22:30That's almost reminiscent of a piece of French furniture as well, isn't it?
22:33But it's all natural.
22:34So we haven't actually like taken off anything from the original piece of wood.
22:38Yeah.
22:38It's all from this piece.
22:40It's very ambitious.
22:41Are you at all concerned it's taking a very long time?
22:44We are.
22:44We'd like to get this completed today, but I think the end result might be worth it.
22:49So you've clearly got a lot to do.
22:50I'm going to leave you to it.
22:52Thanks.
22:52All right, let's get on.
22:54Back to the drilling.
22:56Half the team have dedicated their time and energy on the one console table.
23:00I love the oak that they've scavenged.
23:02I'm just slightly concerned the legs are going to let them down.
23:14It's a new day in Normandy and our teams are going head to head in their first challenge.
23:20Turning a pair of adjacent garages into exquisite dining rooms with the ultimate goal of winning the keys to this
23:27chateau.
23:29Each team has a budget of 1,000 euros and they have only four days left.
23:34Yeah, we've got a plan of action for today.
23:36I think we've got a couple of things to pick up.
23:38We've run out of red paint, so we need to go get some more of that.
23:40We've learned that paint isn't as cheap as it is in the UK and we need to factor that into
23:45the budget now and going forward.
23:47We did get our painting started when I think we all felt a bit of relief actually seeing the room
23:53change and we just want to crack on with that today.
24:00With their painting well underway, the Hot Pink and Lime team are now planning to go furniture shopping.
24:05Do you think we should make a list of what we should go out to look for today?
24:10Just to keep, because you know us two, we're going to be like shopping.
24:14I can't wait to go out shopping.
24:15I mean, I love shopping.
24:17Shopping in France is a perfect combination, so I'm just excited to see what we can find.
24:21Yeah, I wish I was going, but it's fine.
24:31Rene and Penny have headed to one of the local Bricants.
24:35I actually am really excited to be honest.
24:40Oh look, they've got the dining tables and chairs.
24:42These antique markets are great places to pick up bargains and with only 1,000 euros to create their dining
24:49rooms.
24:50That one's 60.
24:52Bargains are exactly what the teams need to find.
24:55This one might be free.
24:57I think it's not got anything on there.
24:59I think we're definitely a good team.
25:01We are deep.
25:01This is my new shopping buddy.
25:03We are deep.
25:06A statement dining room needs a statement dining table.
25:09And these two have found just the thing.
25:13OK.
25:14OK.
25:14I think this is a good find.
25:15I can't like this as well.
25:17I'm happy with this.
25:17Yeah.
25:18Me too.
25:19And I think they're going to be happy when we go back.
25:20I do too.
25:25See, I just feel like, I think it breaks it up and I just, it still ties in because we've
25:30got oak there but I think we break it up.
25:31The chairs alone are 60 euros.
25:33So that would be 60.
25:34But you can also.
25:35Yeah.
25:37And then the table was 60 did you say?
25:4150.
25:4250.
25:42So you'd be 100, you'd be 110.
25:45Yeah, 110.
25:46And that isn't bad.
25:47I think they're going to be really excited and I think they're going to be really happy with what we've
25:51managed to pick up.
25:52This was like the perfect date for me.
25:54Going out shopping and just being in a homeware store, that was lovely.
25:57I'll go on a date with you any time.
26:02Back at base, the Tangerine and Purple team are making a plan for their console table.
26:08Beautiful.
26:10So we're going to take, if I'm right in thinking, we're going to take these off.
26:16We're going to move them onto the top.
26:18Yeah.
26:19And we're going to make this into a shelf using these.
26:21It'll be put onto four new legs.
26:23Those legs need to be a minimum of 75 centimetres.
26:26Yeah.
26:27High.
26:28And then?
26:29Or two new legs if they're really sturdy.
26:32And then we're going to, this, the bottom half will be hopefully maybe used over at that side.
26:39Yeah.
26:42Oh, hello.
26:43Just in time.
26:44Hello.
26:45Wow.
26:46Wow.
26:47Yeah.
26:48Look at that.
26:49I don't know what you need to do.
26:50I'm just looking at everything now, but...
26:52Right, are we ready?
26:53No.
26:53Ready?
26:54Watch, that's going to be heavy that side.
26:56Just to...
26:57Ah!
26:57And this is it.
26:59There is it.
26:59I love this.
27:00Comes all the way out.
27:02Are we ready?
27:03Wow.
27:04And...
27:05Boop!
27:05And I think on this end too.
27:07Et voila!
27:07Wow, that is fab.
27:08So, it will look really nice.
27:11Yeah.
27:12We can fit a lot of chairs around as well.
27:13Yeah.
27:13Mm-hmm.
27:13Be really good.
27:14Are you guys proud of us?
27:15Very proud of us.
27:16Very proud of us.
27:18So, it cost a whole...
27:2250 euros.
27:2450 euros.
27:25Wow!
27:2550 euros.
27:2650 euros.
27:2750 euros.
27:27Wow.
27:27That's amazing.
27:32So, I have to lift it off.
27:33Oh, hang on.
27:33This has come off here as well.
27:35Yeah.
27:35And then knock it like that.
27:38There we go.
27:38That's it.
27:38Right.
27:39So, lie this down.
27:43That's it.
27:44Right, brilliant.
27:44There we go.
27:46Okay.
27:47With both teams working hard in their rooms, it's time for me to spring a surprise.
27:52Teams, can I gather you outside, please?
27:54Oh, what's happening?
27:59You got in store.
28:02Don't look so worried.
28:06It's time for your first petite challenge.
28:09So, why don't you come join me at the workshop where you'll find out what you'll be doing.
28:13Ouch.
28:24Oh.
28:31Welcome to your first petite challenge.
28:37Each week, I'll set you a petite challenge designed to test your ingenuity, creativity
28:42and ability to work within a set timeframe.
28:45All key traits required to successfully run a property of this scale in France.
28:51Today, I want to test your ability to use these leftover materials and transform them
28:57into a table runner, napkins and placemats for your dining rooms.
29:02Ooh.
29:03Okay.
29:04Your table runner should be made from at least two different types of fabrics and I'd like you to create
29:09six napkins and placemats.
29:12You'll be competing in your pairs against your teammates to try and win this challenge.
29:18When the time is up, I'll select one table setting from each team, which will then form part of your
29:24final dining room presentations.
29:26I've provided everything you should need for this challenge and I'll be keeping an eye out for your attention to
29:31detail and finish.
29:32You have two hours.
29:35Your time starts now.
29:52We were last at the table.
29:55Disadvantaged, so far away.
29:57Yeah, it was like when the Teletubbies were in Woolworths
30:00on the day before Christmas, and there was a fight to get to it, wasn't it?
30:05I'm not sure what that means.
30:08How are your sewing skills, Penny?
30:09Um, they'll be better after today.
30:12You think?
30:13In the two hours that we have...
30:14It's not that much. It's not that long.
30:16Yeah. Do you know what I mean? Let's do it.
30:17Yeah? Yeah, let's do it. But I think it's going to look really nice.
30:20We're going to use this main bit as our focal point for the table runner,
30:24and we're going to have a slight edge so we can show off
30:27the little roses here as well to tie in with the napkins
30:31and the table mats, hopefully, if we've got enough fabric.
30:34So if we make this as the main runner, make some napkins out of that
30:38and then use the really pretty edging for this...
30:44Yeah, good work, isn't it?
30:45..and then everything matches then.
30:47I think this is the most beautiful fabric that we have here,
30:51so I really want to showcase it.
30:52So then, obviously, we have it like this.
30:55We do your idea of, like, it's sort of, like,
30:58the sort of draping sort of thing.
31:00Right, go, go, go.
31:01We need to start pinning this.
31:02It's like being back at school, doing a test.
31:04Just chill out, because you're getting distracted.
31:07If you get distracted, you won't get it done.
31:10Time tap challenges are my downfall, generally.
31:13I think it's our downfall, really, isn't it?
31:14Yeah.
31:15I've done the line and then I'm just cutting slightly inside it.
31:20Straight to work, showing their experience
31:22with what's required in this particular task
31:24are the purple pair, Andrea and Hayley.
31:29Do I look stressed?
31:31How's it going?
31:32Yeah, not bad.
31:33Yeah, good.
31:34Not bad.
31:34Excited by the challenge or nervous?
31:36Erm, excited.
31:38A bit nervous about the time.
31:39Tell me about the plan.
31:40So we found this fabric, which has got nice, ready-made panels,
31:43which are ideal for a table runner.
31:45Erm, so we're going to do...
31:47We're cutting out the two strips,
31:49we're going to put them back to back
31:50and we're going to pipe down the edge in this fabric.
31:54So you clearly know the jargon.
31:55Does that suggest that you've done a little sewing before?
31:58Yeah, I've done bits, yeah.
31:59I've seen people doing it.
32:01Yeah.
32:02But you knew the word piping.
32:04I've done sewing for...
32:05Er, since being a kid, really.
32:07Erm, my mum and my grandma taught me how to sew.
32:10It sounds like you've got the right skills between you,
32:12it's just the time you're concerned about.
32:13Yeah.
32:14I'll let you crack on them.
32:21I like that, you know.
32:24Oh, cute.
32:26Yeah.
32:27First thing Andrea and Hayley said to us
32:29when we met them was they're really good at textiles.
32:32Who said that? Oh, did they?
32:34Yeah, so...
32:36Pressure's on, then.
32:37Pressure is on.
32:40So we have some green in the room.
32:42Erm, we...
32:43This isn't to be our main focal point,
32:45but if we cover it over
32:48and it gives a lovely little green sheen
32:52through the foil.
32:53Through the grey.
32:54So it's there but not there.
32:55OK.
32:56And I think we're having the other greens in the room,
32:58then it'll bring that out a little bit too.
33:00But it's not green.
33:02And is this something you've done a lot of before?
33:04No.
33:05No.
33:06What about the placemats?
33:07What are they going to look like?
33:10Come back in five.
33:12Yeah.
33:15And over at the hot pink table,
33:17Priet and Rene are planning a bold addition
33:19to their dining room.
33:21I'm happy with both.
33:22I think both of them complement it.
33:23This would look more, like, simple.
33:26This would look a bit more adventurous.
33:29OK.
33:29Maybe a little bit more creative.
33:30We might get more points for that.
33:31I don't know.
33:32OK.
33:32But let's see.
33:33All right, let's go bring it in.
33:34Let's just see how it all looks on the table.
33:36Yeah, yeah, yeah.
33:36All right.
33:38Going up against the girls
33:39that we're working with,
33:40doing the room.
33:41It does feel a little bit strange
33:42because it's been teamwork
33:44since the day we arrived
33:45and now it's...
33:46Come on.
33:46It's oppositions.
33:49They're our enemy.
33:50I mean, it's competition.
33:51Right, OK.
33:52And you've got to take competition seriously.
33:55When you've got such a big prize,
33:57you do?
33:58Yeah.
34:04Four creative couples
34:05are putting their DIY
34:07and design skills to the test,
34:09competing to win a chateau
34:10in northwest France
34:11worth a quarter of a million pounds.
34:15And if the task
34:17of converting two former garages
34:18into delicious dining rooms
34:20wasn't enough,
34:22trying to go as straight as possible.
34:24They've now been given
34:25their first petite challenge,
34:27transforming some cast-off fabrics...
34:29It's like wrapping Christmas presents, isn't it?
34:31..into a table setting
34:33fit for their new rooms.
34:35Two hours, it seems like a long time.
34:38Yeah, but it's really not at all,
34:40especially when...
34:41We're probably taking two hours
34:42just to pin the thing.
34:43I can't believe it.
34:45Now my hands are shaking.
34:47Let me do the placemats now
34:49and just see how much we have.
34:50What shape are you doing them?
34:51Circle?
34:52I was going to do square.
34:53Do you think circle?
34:54And time is running out.
34:56You've used up half of your time, everybody.
34:58You've got 60 minutes left.
35:01Create cut squares.
35:02Just do squares.
35:03Ta-da!
35:04We've got a table runner,
35:05even if it's not hemmed.
35:08It's going out a little bit, I know.
35:10The thing is, that's the bit that...
35:12As long as this line's straight,
35:14this one doesn't have to match so much.
35:15It does, because that's your...
35:16That's the bit you're looking at.
35:18What are you working on?
35:19I'm working on the table runner.
35:21This curtain had a really pretty detail,
35:24so I'm going to try and see
35:25if I can hem that as an edge.
35:28And then we've got quite enough of this
35:31to be able to use for the placemats as well.
35:34So the placemats and the table class
35:35are going to be matched perfectly.
35:37It sounds like you're trying to achieve a lot
35:39in a very short time.
35:40This is my problem.
35:41But you are prioritising.
35:43So it's the main priorities.
35:44If you get them done, you do the extra bits.
35:47Yeah, that's the aim.
35:48Time blindness is my downfall,
35:51so we'll see how we get on.
35:52Time blindness.
35:54You need more time and less blindness.
35:58I found this bit of wood in the workshop
36:00and I'm going to use this as a template
36:03for our placemap.
36:07We're going to do them double thickness.
36:08There we go.
36:09There's a placemap.
36:13Now is not the time for mucking about, Stuart.
36:15Sorry, I'm not mucking about.
36:16It's just my thought process.
36:17I don't mean to be this silly.
36:19It's just how I am.
36:20Just come down.
36:21Honestly, it can get right annoying, even for me.
36:23Why did I say that?
36:25Why have you chosen these fabrics?
36:26So we want to add some pop of colour.
36:29Boldness.
36:29Yeah, we've got the reds.
36:31And also, when you think of dining,
36:33you do think of these luxury colours like reds,
36:35you've got the orange, you've got the yellows.
36:36We're trying to incorporate that.
36:38Greens.
36:38Yeah.
36:39Always bold with you two, isn't it?
36:41Never holding back.
36:42And what about sewing?
36:43Growing up, did you sew a lot?
36:45A little bit.
36:46I used to make little outfits and sew them online,
36:47but I'm not a professional.
36:48I have faith in her.
36:50I have so much faith in her.
36:51Right, you've got lots to do.
36:52I'll eat it.
36:54Bye.
36:55I'm starting making napkins.
36:58Blue napkins.
36:59They were placemats.
37:00They're now napkins.
37:01Don't stitch yourselves up, everybody.
37:03You've only got 20 minutes remaining.
37:06Ooh.
37:08Oh, my gosh, Priya.
37:10I'm feeling pressure.
37:11You need to get on with it.
37:12Yeah, OK.
37:12It's been three years since I've last sewn something,
37:16so let's try and see how it's going to go.
37:20Is it making all these threads here?
37:23It's gone again.
37:25Uh-oh.
37:25I think my bobbins tangled.
37:29Well, I could actually hand-stitch the bottom ends of the runner.
37:34I'm actually not sure we're going to manage to get anywhere near this finished.
37:37Move out the way and see if this works.
37:40We kind of use that word rustic.
37:42When things are not as neat.
37:45Priya, how much do you love me?
37:50Friends that stitch together stay together.
37:55Oh, I think I've stuffed up.
37:57I have stuffed up.
37:57I'm afraid, Penny, our time here is dangling by a thread.
38:00It's not a comedy show.
38:01This is serious.
38:03It's all fun and games until your bobbin runs out.
38:06You have five minutes to finish your creations.
38:09Oh, my goodness, Priya, we've got five minutes.
38:13One, two, three, four, five.
38:15Un, deux, trois, trois, quatre.
38:19Signed, Priya, do you mind cutting another strip like this for me, please?
38:21Yeah, sure.
38:22How's it going?
38:23Shh.
38:24Okay.
38:25Try and make everything just look neat.
38:28We'll be there.
38:29We're fine.
38:30We're fine.
38:30We're doing okay, she says.
38:34In.
38:35Out.
38:37Oh, wow.
38:39So sorry.
38:41I'm so sorry.
38:42I'm like, just cutting all those edges, okay?
38:44It's just nearly there.
38:46Do you want to do it like that?
38:47Carry on.
38:49Carry on, carry on, carry on.
38:55Time's up, needles down, time to present your crafts.
39:05We tried our best, didn't we?
39:06I'd give ourselves a seven and a half out of ten.
39:10I've got one done.
39:11It showed the idea that was there.
39:12Oh, that's a shame we didn't quite get finished.
39:14Oh, wow.
39:19He's not a sore.
39:20The concept and, like, even how it looks, it looks really, really good.
39:23Yeah.
39:23Well, we'll see what the judges say.
39:25We think it looks really, really good.
39:32Petite challenge complete.
39:34I've got to decide which table settings will feature in the finished dining rooms.
39:39Hayley and Andrea, I'm coming to you first.
39:42Okay.
39:42Right, so talk me through your design.
39:47So, we spotted this fabric in the basket and we decided that that would make the runner pop a bit
39:53and we've added some blue pipe in here and we've used the roses part of this fabric as our table
40:00mats.
40:01And then the blue from here, this is what we use for the napkins.
40:05Okay, so they all tie together to create one family look.
40:08Yes, yeah.
40:09You can see the lovely crisp seams and you can't see any of the stitches.
40:12That's lovely.
40:13We didn't get finished, but we tried really hard.
40:17And we finished the runner and the runner's really impressive.
40:19Okay.
40:20We think.
40:22I'll be the judge of that.
40:26Fantastic effort, given the time you had.
40:28Well done.
40:31Right.
40:32Chris and Paloma, what have we got here then?
40:33So, we've got some floral themes in our room, so we thought we would replicate that in our table set.
40:40We went for the blue and reds and whites, as it's the French colour, and then went for kind of
40:46mix and match napkins.
40:48So, you're just showing off.
40:49You've made seven napkins instead of six.
40:51It was quite a happy mistake, because we were just sewing and we sold one too many.
40:54But it does make a beautiful little centrepiece for a runner to lay something on, like, a flower pot or
41:00a hot plate.
41:01But I think it's a really good attempt.
41:03Well done.
41:03Thank you very much.
41:05Stuart and Penny, what have we got?
41:08I am quite happy with the end result, because I haven't worked a sewing machine since I was about eight
41:14years old.
41:14So, this was going back in time and thinking, heck, what do I do?
41:17We knew what fabrics we wanted, because it's going to complement the colour scheme in the chateau.
41:22Your original design had the voil on top of the green. What changed?
41:26Just the sewing part of it, trying to put things together, just didn't work out. It wasn't as neat.
41:31We would like to keep things a bit sort of rustic, a bit rough around the edges, then have the
41:35embroidery detail around each of the placemats.
41:37Unfortunately, we just didn't get a chance to finish them all.
41:40So, it sounds like some valuable lessons learned in time management.
41:43Definitely. Definitely.
41:44So, you'll be utilising on the main challenge in the dining room?
41:48We will.
41:49Promise?
41:50Well done.
41:55So, Renée and Priet, tell me about your design.
41:58We knew that we wanted drapings and we wanted to really stand out on the dining table.
42:02We feel like the colours we've chosen were really pop inside of the dining room.
42:06And your design's really interesting. You've created something three-dimensional rather than a flat runner.
42:11What's your theory behind that?
42:13I mean, we wanted to go for something maybe people haven't seen before.
42:16We saw a material that we really liked and then we just thought, how can we give it even more
42:19sort of, like, texture instead of it just being flat?
42:21Now, what about the placemats?
42:22We have, like, a lot of, like, curved things in the dining room. We're trying to implement that.
42:26So, I just thought it would be nice to just follow that through.
42:29And that flows through to the napkins, of course, which look pretty.
42:32I'm not sure how practical they are.
42:36You should try them.
42:40I think that's a fantastic effort. Well done.
42:45Only one place setting can be chosen for each dining room. So, which pairs will come out on top?
42:53Firstly, well done, everybody. You've done so well considering the time constraints and the heat.
43:00Even the hydrangeas are struggling. So, well done for that huge effort you've put in.
43:05The pair from this team, whose place setting will be going in their dining room, is...
43:13Andrea and Hayley.
43:21The pair from this team, whose place settings will be going in their dining room, are...
43:31Penny and Stuart.
43:34Well done.
43:38Right, you've got no time to stand around. Back to your rooms. Let's go.
43:43Both the winning teams show great attention to detail, clean seams, some great sewing, and a very good eye for
43:50design.
43:53It felt really great to win the Petit Challenge today. I think it's a little boost for us as a
43:59pair.
44:01This little win has definitely made us feel that we're going in the right direction.
44:06Having our teammates working separately to show us what they can achieve as well,
44:11so we've got confidence in our team.
44:13We're a little bit disappointed we didn't win, but it's the first challenge.
44:16There's a lot more to go, so we just have to be positive.
44:18Yeah.
44:19This competition is really challenging us at every level. I think we've...
44:25Time constraints has always been an issue for me.
44:27I think that shows we can do it in a couple of hours.
44:29Yeah, to be fair, maybe there's a lesson in that.
44:33It's raised the stakes, for sure. You know, everybody has to dig a little deeper, I think, to get through
44:37this.
44:37So, yeah, it's... the challenge is on now.
44:41Next time...
44:42One, two, three.
44:43My God, is there any trees left?
44:45The pressure is on.
44:46They've run out of the base paint.
44:48Oh, my God.
44:49This floor is not even finished, and you want to add more to it.
44:52As our two teams go head-to-head...
44:55Yay, rock and roll.
44:56It's good now, really.
44:57Yeah.
44:57...to create the best chateau dining room.
45:02And it's time to say au revoir to one of the four pairs.
45:06The pair leaving us today are...
45:11...is Shin 7 ?
45:19Got stuck.
45:20Yaẳit recognize your place and try and during the other ones we know about it.
45:39DX5
45:39Go on.
45:40Get stuck.
45:40you
