00:14Hey, today we're going to take a look at the Verizon H9e four and a half tonne fully electric truck.
00:23This truck has a dry body box on the back that you might use for courier work or similar
00:28and it's got a proper size battery, a decent charge rate and a fantastic cabin.
00:35So let's take a look around it.
00:50In the back here, you've got your typical kind of square body box.
00:56You've got an aluminium floor, you've got a side door which is quite nice for a truck of this size
01:01and you've clearly got your rear door area as well there.
01:06So you've got about 21 cubic metres of space in the back here and the ability to put pretty much
01:13whatever you want.
01:14So I'm a bit of an electric truck nut and when I get around them, I like to poke and
01:18prod and find out what we can find out.
01:20And so one of my first things to do on a truck like this is try and pop the cabin
01:25and have a look up under the back under here
01:27and see what's going on with the power control systems and on all the rest of it.
01:31And one of the things I found really exciting and interesting and a bit odd is in this truck,
01:36there is no cabin tilt system that I can find.
01:40I might be one there, but I can see the cabin is bolted down onto some rubber bushes,
01:44which is pretty standard, just in under here and that there is no handle to undo it.
01:51So how do you deal with things like servicing and so on?
01:53So behind this panel over here, we've got our washer bottle fill up.
01:58You can see that over there.
01:59You've really got not much else to deal with on a truck like this.
02:03And we'll take a look at what we can see up underneath the truck down in the back here and
02:08see what we can find.
02:09So we'll do our best to have a look inside what's going on.
02:13Obviously, coolant bottle, that's not something we are going to need to touch.
02:15You can see the battery system on the other side there.
02:20And what you'll find is this is a 24-volt system, quite common for little trucks like this,
02:25that they're actually a 24-volt system.
02:28We've also got a dip in here and see if we can see what we can do.
02:31We're going to go into the bowels, right?
02:32Okay, so there's a couple of things that we can see.
02:34So we've got a power distribution module here,
02:36and we can see a lot of high voltage coming in and coming out.
02:40We've got, you see the triple-coloured wires over there.
02:44So that's obviously for the three-phase that's going to run the motor.
02:48So this is the inverter for the motor as well.
02:50We've got some of these larger connectors on here that's coming in from the battery.
02:54So that's going to battery in.
02:56You can see this blanked-off plug at the top here with four outputs.
02:59That is going to be your output for things like a fridge or other electrics,
03:06typically DC output of something like 15 kilowatts.
03:11That's pretty useful.
03:12These are the ones down the front here.
03:14They're going to be running things like the air compressor for the brakes,
03:17the air conditioning pump, and probably something or other else as well that's high voltage output.
03:23So you can see these boxes underneath most of the trucks of this type,
03:28and even cars as well, a power distribution module.
03:31They all have a similar kind of setup where power comes in,
03:34goes out to the motor, goes out to other things,
03:38and pretty much deals with all of the goings-on inside the truck.
03:44We saw before that there's that air brake system in the truck,
03:48and there's a little bit of extra maintenance there,
03:50including things like the water drainage stuff,
03:53so you'll need to become aware of how to deal with that.
03:55It's not hard.
03:56It's just different.
03:57You can see up under there, the battery pack,
04:01quite good clearance and also very central,
04:04so you don't have those problems with the concerns of things like
04:08the side impact area for a side T-bone accident.
04:21One of the things that's nice about these Frizen trucks are their cabins.
04:26Look, you know, sometimes you think about a truck
04:28and its cabin is really not that important,
04:31but they make a really lovely job of this,
04:33and what you might see here on the key is something a little bit familiar.
04:37So this is clearly Geely's commercial brand, Frizen,
04:42and they bring a lot of the tech that goes into some of the things
04:45like the EX5 and the Star and so on into this truck.
04:50You've got quite a nice centre console area,
04:53quite a big back dashboard, lots of features,
04:57and a really nice place to be.
05:00When we boot this truck up,
05:01we can see the dashboard lights up.
05:04It's quite a nice sort of digital dashboard.
05:06It's quite lit up.
05:07And then we've also got our infotainment system,
05:12which is quite, you know, just usable.
05:15Your basic things in there.
05:17On this particular vehicle, it's not yet got Apple CarPlay,
05:20but it does have your Android, Google, Auto style set up,
05:25and you are able to use that.
05:27We've also got, you know, your basic radios and things like that as well.
05:32So nice place to be, reasonable cabin, decent storage around the traps.
05:40There's that extra seat in there as well.
05:46So we've done a bit of a walk around.
05:47Let's go and give it a bit of a charge.
05:50These things sometimes become a bit fun when you go and have a public charge.
05:53So we're going to go and have a go at a BP Pulse Centre.
05:58Let's go for a bit of a drive.
06:04Kick it off with all the beans and bongs.
06:10We've got our drive selector down the bottom here.
06:13Just kick it into the drive.
06:15Foot off the brake.
06:16Tip into the throttle.
06:17The automatic park brake comes straight off.
06:21And we're going to go and throw a bit of a U-turn in this industrial estate that we're in.
06:26It's got a pretty good, decent turning circle.
06:29It's not going to make it right around this area here, but it's pretty good.
06:32We come to the stop there.
06:33You can feel those air brakes do their thing.
06:38And so we then throw it into reverse with the dial in the centre console.
06:41It's giving kind of, I don't know, Hyundai vibes.
06:49And then off we go.
06:54As I said before, it's got a pretty zippy take-off.
06:59It's like any truck.
07:00It's a bit lumpy and bumpy.
07:02But, yeah, we're off and running.
07:05Quite a decent acceleration there.
07:07We don't obviously have a load in today, but it's not going to make that much of a difference when
07:11we're loaded.
07:21Just that last bit when you're coming to a stop that you've got to kind of get used to the
07:29amount of brake pressure that you need to provide when you're coming to the car that's in front of you.
07:34So you kind of have to increase the brake pressure in that final couple of kilometres an hour or those
07:39final metres as you're coming to the next, to the stop.
07:49It doesn't feel too big on the road, width-wise and so on.
07:53There's not a lot of play in the steering wheel for a truck of this nature.
07:56Sometimes you can move the wheel maybe 20 degrees and you'll get no movement on a lot of trucks of
08:02this size, particularly the diesels that are in the marketplace.
08:06But when you're driving this, it is actually reasonably responsive without too much delay.
08:13It's not like a barge or a cruise ship like you might expect.
08:19We've got a late light here, so we're coming to a stop pretty quickly and we'll be the first ones
08:24at the light.
08:26And so again, just coming to a stop at the end, you increase the pressure under your foot under that
08:32last couple of metres.
08:34And now that I've got the hold function on, I've taken my foot off the brakes.
08:38I don't have to sit there fighting the air brakes, which are actually a lot more pushback than a typical
08:43hydraulic system.
08:44I quite like the air conditioning system.
08:47Whilst it's a simple fan speed and temperature dial kind of arrangement without even the number of degrees that it's
08:56aiming for,
08:57it's more of a digital version of our old school slider bar that we might have had years ago.
09:08And an advanced speed that we can set up and down, aircon on and on.
09:12So we've come on down to BP at the Port of Brisbane.
09:17And we're going to do a little charge session here.
09:20So we've got the charge plugged in down here.
09:24And we've got ourselves our BP Pulse tritium unit.
09:29Look, you can see I'm using the wrong side of the system.
09:33And that's because the first crack, the other gun wouldn't work.
09:37So we've finally got the second gun working and it's turning out a decent charge rate.
09:42We've got somewhere in the order of 90 odd kilowatt charge at the moment.
09:46And this is a 100 kilowatt charger.
09:48Well, it's a 150 kilowatt charger.
09:50They've only decided to put 100 kilowatts of power into it.
09:53And so we're getting the majority of that right now.
09:56So you can't complain.
09:58We're going to throw a little bit in this so that we can go and do some of the testing
10:01that we're up to.
10:02And we'll see how the whole truck runs.
10:11You can see the battery in underneath.
10:18You can see the air brake system on the side there.
10:22And really interestingly, you can have a look at how the motor is mounted onto the axle.
10:28It really helps to improve efficiency.
10:35You can see this vehicle has a big box on the back of it.
10:38Right just for all of the activity it's up to.
10:41And you can see that motor, how it provides gearbox to the air freckly to the air.
10:48Removing the need for a tail shaft.
10:50And removing the need for all the other bits and pieces that go with that.
10:55Reduces the amount of powertrain waste that there is there.
10:57Again, you can see on this side how the battery is really central to the chassis.
11:03And it's going to really take care of any concerns that people have sometimes with side impact on batteries that
11:11are typically on this size of truck.
11:13This four and a half tonne size truck that come out of China.
11:16They typically have a battery that is slung on the sides.
11:21This one is slung in the middle.
11:23Here's an interesting safety feature of the H9E.
11:27So you open the door and it automatically starts putting on the hazard lights.
11:33I guess that makes sense particularly in town centres.
11:36Because you're going to start to jump out of the truck and it might be a bit wide and so
11:41on.
11:41So an interesting approach from Verizon.
11:45We've done just on 13 minutes of charging and all of that has been at just around 95 kilowatts.
11:52And we put 20 kilowatt hours in.
11:54So I'm pretty happy with that.
11:56That's what we really needed.
11:57Just a quick splurt whilst we were heading off to do some other things.
12:01And it's going to give us enough driving for the time that we're here.
12:04So we're going to stop that session.
12:07We're going to hit the old stop on over here.
12:10Stop session.
12:11That's going to knock it on the head.
12:14We've brought it from about 20% to about 40%.
12:18And we'll disconnect the gun.
12:21Get it back.
12:22Get on the road.
12:23So if we talk about a couple of the driving impressions we've got from this truck.
12:26It's a car licence, four and a half tonne truck.
12:30It's got reasonable power steering.
12:33That's quite nice.
12:34One of the big differences with this truck is it's got air brakes.
12:37So some of the four and a half tonne trucks that are out there just have normal hydraulic brakes like
12:43you might have in a car.
12:44It's one thing that you do need to get used to.
12:46When you're regenerative braking, it's not a lot different to say the Verizon Supervan.
12:50It'll bring energy back in.
12:52But when you're starting to get at lower speeds or harder braking that's beyond regenerative,
12:57then you start to feel those air brakes.
12:59And it's about modulating the brake pedal.
13:01It takes a little bit to get used to but not a lot and still makes this truck very drivable
13:06for your normal driver as opposed to needing to be a truck driver with a heavy truck licence.
13:12We've got decent acceleration.
13:14In fact, I haven't quite seen a difference between the eco mode and the standard mode from an acceleration point
13:21of view.
13:21It goes pretty hot, particularly off the line.
13:24As I said before, the regen is pretty reasonable.
13:26We've got a fantastic feel to that first level of regen.
13:31And then that second level of regen, when you tip into the brake, comes on well.
13:37It does have a regen button and I've got to explore that a bit more because at the moment I
13:42can't see a difference between modes.
13:45And unlike the Supervan where there's three modes for regen, there's nothing coming up on the dashboard saying which mode
13:51I'm in.
13:52So I'm guessing that that's going to be something to learn a bit more about.
13:56We've also got a hill hold or an auto hold mode.
13:59So come to a stop with that button on and the vehicle will hold.
14:03You can come off the brakes.
14:04That's kind of nice, particularly with these air brakes on the truck.
14:06That'll make you feel more confident when you're sitting at a set of lights waiting for those lights to change.
14:12And you can tip into the throttle to go to that next set of lights, no doubt, in the city
14:16as you're driving it around.
14:17In this four and a half tonne arrangement, you've got a hundred kilowatt hour battery.
14:22So if we take that 36, let's say, 35, 36 kilowatt hours per hundred kilometres.
14:29And we take that hundred kilowatt hour battery, what we're talking about there is probably the thick end of 250
14:37kilometres and maybe even more of real world delivery range for this truck.
14:43So that's pretty reasonable compared to a lot of the other vehicles which have about an 80 kilowatt hour battery
14:49and they use a lot more energy.
14:51And so they're down in the below 200 kilometres real world range.
14:55So this opens out a lot of use cases for this vehicle compared to some of the others.
15:02The eight and a half tonne version of this truck is available in a larger battery, a couple of different
15:07size larger batteries.
15:08And so that provides up to 162 kilowatt hours.
15:13That's going to be obviously for a bigger truck, but it's going to give you, again, a similar level and
15:18maybe even larger range as the truck uses more energy.
15:21So this is a pretty cool arrangement.
15:24It's really stepped it on to the next level and provides those inner city four and a half tonne truck
15:31operators a new option for real world electrification all round.
15:36This is a pretty good balanced product.
15:39Some likes and dislikes.
15:41Generally, I like most of it.
15:43It's actually a really good package.
15:45It's pretty comfortable.
15:47And I'm pretty impressed by the efficiency, which I think is a major part that no one talks about.
15:51I will always talk about efficiency in electric vehicles.
15:54There's no point having a big battery if you're using it all for silliness.
15:57You may as well have a smaller battery with better efficiency and it can be achieved.
16:02Probably things that I'm still getting used to are things like air brakes on a truck that's this size, but
16:08that's something to learn.
16:09That's a driver's behavior, just like learning regen.
16:12The charging point here on the passenger side, just behind the front wheel.
16:17And look, there's a couple of things I like about this.
16:19I like that there's no door.
16:20Most of the other products in this marketplace have a door and that's kind of a pain in the butt.
16:24And then it's got these rubber boots that are sort of covering up the plugs.
16:29And I've got to say, I'm not sure if I like them.
16:31If you get them back in the wrong order, they don't go in properly.
16:35So you can see here, if you put in the Type 2 first, then the CCS plug can't go on.
16:41So you have to go the other way around.
16:42That's a bit of a pain in the backside, depending on your charging type.
16:45And I guess you've got to cover it up some way, or do you?
16:49That's a good question.
16:50The charge port down there and the rubber boots, I don't know what the best solution is there.
16:56I'm a Tesla guy originally, so ultimately the way that they do it is, in my opinion, the best.
17:01But trucks are a little bit different.
17:03Having Apple CarPlay in time will be useful, but we've seen this happen with the other Geely product around the
17:08traps,
17:09where it's become as an upgrade.
17:10That's just happened on the EX5.
17:12And so that might happen here as well.
17:14I think all around, one of the exciting parts here is the price.
17:17Whilst I haven't got exact prices for you today, my understanding is that this truck here, as it stands, is
17:23well below $100,000.
17:25And that is absolutely amazing for what we've seen in the marketplace.
17:29That's with box, that's ready on the road, well below $100,000.
17:33So this is starting to bring us towards a parity place.
17:36And you throw the fuel costs in there, and you're getting very, very close.
17:40And the Verizon H9e steps the whole 4.5 ton electric truck game further on.
17:46There's no doubt that this has got more refinement, better engineering, and overall a better package than some of the
17:52previous products.
17:53And I think it's purely because of the timing of the delivery of this vehicle.
17:57I'm sure those other brands will start to refresh their vehicles and take on things like electrified axles, centrally mounted
18:03batteries,
18:04and look for some of those efficiencies that come along the way.
18:08So the H9e.
18:09Here we go.
18:10This is the new generation of electric trucks.
18:12This is the new generation of electric trucks.
18:13This is the new generation of electric trucks.
18:14This is the new generation of electric trucks.
18:15This is the new generation of electric trucks.
