00:00BYD has just killed the ICE car. We have just seen some of the most disruptive
00:04technology here tonight behind me. We are of course in Shenzhen. My name's Elliot Richards
00:10and I'm going to tell you more about what I saw tonight. Let's go.
00:21So as we know BYD came out with a hang and tan in 2025 and they announced megawatt charging back
00:28then but it's kind of on a small scale on a pilot basis. This year we're expecting to see a
00:33massive
00:34rollout of these. These are the new charging units from BYD. These are megawatt chargers.
00:38We're expecting charging speeds of over one megawatt and charging times of less than five
00:45minutes. Now these are pretty unique chargers as you can see here behind me. The charging cable is
00:50above you so no messing around on the floor, you know, picking up cables. It's all from above so
00:57I think there's a really neat solution. I think these are going to be very popular
01:01if they go overseas. I think they're going to be popular here in China. I think we're going to see
01:04these in action tomorrow and obviously the big units over here to power these megawatt chargers.
01:12So really exciting times to actually see this in commercial reality. This is what we have been
01:18waiting for for a long time. This is when this comes to life and this is what will make the
01:23biggest
01:23difference in moving away from ICE vehicles. So yeah, this is good stuff. So the major thing is that
01:30BYD own both parts of the supply chain. They own build the batteries, the cars and now the charging
01:37network. No one else in China is doing that. Of course, Tesla has done very similar in the US and
01:42Europe. But no one has done this to this scale. In China, of course, BYD has got the vertical
01:48integration and they've got the scale. But if they can roll out this technology, this battery network,
01:54this charging, that is really, honestly, a game changer. Now, of course, we know that it takes two
02:00to three minutes to fill up an ICE car. We're expecting this to take about five minutes, maybe
02:06from 10 to 80 percent when the announcement comes out a bit later on in these charging forecalls.
02:11These look like petrol forecalls because you spend almost the same amount of time. That is what's so
02:17transformational about today's event. And I think what's going to be so game changing for both BYD
02:23and the energy transition. And of course, at the heart of all of this is the battery. As you can
02:27see,
02:28I can barely get close to it. But who else is doing fast charging and amazing batteries? Well,
02:34of course, we've got CATL with the Shenzhen 12C battery. And of course, CATL have the scale.
02:40They're in a lot of cars. BYD, of course, have this. This is their latest battery technology. But then
02:45Huawei also has 1.5 megawatt charging, but it's on a very small scale. It's only in Shanghai. It's only
02:51a pilot. And of course, Huawei don't have the scale of BYD at the moment. So that's why this stuff
02:57is
02:57so transformational. Like the BYD god's eye that we saw about a year ago, that was transformation
03:04for the self-driving kind of world. This is on another level. And I think it's probably more
03:08important than the self-driving. I can't even get close to this battery. There's so many people.
03:18So if you just come out of the conference and we've heard about the exact details of what BYD are
03:23planning to do in 2026 with charging and their new flash charging system, it's pretty amazing.
03:29So get this. They've managed to create these flash charging stations here. They're going to roll out
03:3520,000 by the end of 2026. And they said if BYD users want to have a charging pile site,
03:42you just need to contact them. They'll study the site and they promise to build it within one week.
03:46The other thing is that these now can charge your electric car, your BYD electric car,
03:51the new version of the BYD blade battery. There's 10 cars which have those from today. They will be able
03:57to charge 10 to 70% in just five minutes. They can charge from 10 to 97% in nine
04:04minutes. And even if
04:05you live in the frozen far north, you can also charge there in just 12 minutes. Incredible speeds.
04:13And all thanks to this flash charging system at 1.5 megawatts. Now he's saying if we had rolled out
04:19all these charges and connected them all to the grid, you know, purely to the grid,
04:23it would be a big problem. They'd consume more power than the grid can handle, of course. So
04:27they've come up with a solution in these boxes here, which is obviously batteries. So they're
04:32going to have lots of battery storage on site. They're going to have solar panels on the roof,
04:35and that's how they're going to solve this problem. I've come out here straight away.
04:39They're introducing some new cars. I should go back in and watch what's happening with those new
04:44cars. But this charging technology, these flash chargers is super important. I'm really,
04:50really excited to see what happens. And this is the thing. BYD have those three things. They have
04:54the cars, they have the batteries. Now they have the chargers. They promised one year of fast charging
04:59for free for BYD users. And of course, they're going to open this up to other people as well. This
05:05is
05:05going beyond what Tesla did with their supercharger network. This is truly groundbreaking if they can do
05:11this rollout in just one year.
05:22Okay, we're actually here at the flash charging station. It's the next day after the event.
05:26As you can see, all of the rows of flash chargers over here. And we're going to see the flash
05:33charging
05:33demonstration a bit later on. I'm excited to see it in real life. But this actually shows you how the
05:39the guns work, how these units work, and it does just feel like a proper petrol station. They've even
05:46got coffee shop, convenience store, it's all in one area. And this is basically on the same sort of size
05:53as a petrol station. So yeah, this is the replacement petrol station of the future, for sure. Right, this is
06:01to show you just how light these things are and how easy they are to use when you're pulling them
06:05out,
06:06then obviously plugging it into your car. Or if you're charging on this side, plug it in on this
06:11side. And this is much easier than dragging a cable across the ground. I think this is actually quite
06:16inspired. Very neat solution. So behind us, we're seeing a live demonstration of the flash chargers
06:23here in Shenzhen, the newly built station, as you can see, pretty rapid behind me. And it's using the
06:31batteries just over in the corner to top up that charge to get that flash charging in.
06:36So what we've seen today is pretty groundbreaking. We are going to see these rolling out across China
06:42a lot more. And I've already seen news about these rolling across Europe, perhaps in the next year or
06:48so as well. So this is a very exciting day for BYD. I hope you've enjoyed the video. See you
06:53next time.
06:53We'll see you next time.
