00:00Hello, Skate Tales.
00:01We're back in San Diego, jumping on a mission
00:04with Peter Hewitt, the undisputed king of concrete.
00:11Yes, Peter.
00:13What matters?
00:14So good to see you.
00:15You too.
00:16In person.
00:24Peter, he's been professional since I was born.
00:27And he's just the fucking dude that keeps going.
00:30It's Dr. Power.
00:32You know, when he turns on his afterburners,
00:36he cruises for a while then.
00:37He takes things really to an extreme,
00:40especially with his vertical skating.
00:43He does lines in here we can't even do.
00:45We're just like, no, no, no, you work too good.
00:47So we just have to back out.
00:49Fucking total mayhem.
00:51Balls to the wall.
00:52As fast as you can go at all times.
00:53The best.
00:55Knows when to turn it up,
00:56and knows when to be mellow.
01:00Him at Washington is a treat to see, man.
01:04He fucking has all the lines.
01:06The Fakie Smith around the loveseat corner
01:09was absolutely crazy.
01:23So this is the part of the park that gets the least touched.
01:28It used to be a bull.
01:29It used to be closed off right there.
01:31Mm-hmm.
01:33So this is the Pea Stone.
01:35Pea Stone barbecue?
01:36Yeah.
01:37Oh, yeah.
01:37So what's your favorite thing about this park?
01:39It's in the shade is a big deal to me.
01:42Shade and cover from the rain.
01:44Yeah.
01:45And also it's built by us.
01:47And all the sessions that happen here.
01:49Yeah.
01:49All the homies.
01:50It's great when you get everyone together.
01:55Everywhere, yeah.
01:56Look, I see vert.
01:57Yeah.
01:58Vert, vert, vert.
01:59And all pool coping.
02:01As Peter was giving me the rundown of the skate park,
02:04everybody around just stopped skating.
02:07As we're walking through the middle,
02:09just shows how much respect the locals have for Peter, you know?
02:12A lot of respect.
02:42Cooming's sticking out.
02:56Oh, no, no.
03:01Oh, no.
03:02No, I know.
03:05Oh, no.
03:05I've been on that one.
03:07I've been on that one.
03:11Yeah, I've always had injuries my whole life, so it's not anything new when it does happen.
03:18But I'm not going to stop.
03:20I just want to get back there, trying to get back to where I was.
03:30Checking in with your body is a good thing, which I don't, I just figured out and I'm
03:3750.
03:38So, go figure.
03:41Do you need some help around it?
03:42Yeah, I do.
03:43I could use some little trimming over here.
03:47I got the tool.
03:49All right.
03:50Gardening helps with my brain.
03:52Yeah, for sure.
03:54I can kind of get out of my head in a similar way.
03:59I could see why Peter likes doing this, preparing him for the gnarliest bowls.
04:05Yeah, if you have something to garden with, even if it's just a plant in your house that
04:10you're trying to keep alive.
04:12You know?
04:13That's gardening.
04:15Amazing.
04:15I think what I do is I just continue what I normally would do.
04:19Like, if I'm hurt, I just, I still go to the skate park and cheer my friends on and I'm
04:26still there.
04:26And I just believe that I'm going to heal.
04:29Like, I feel like my, your brain can do that.
04:32You can heal yourself if you're positive about it.
04:35I used to make bad decisions skating because I was committed, too committed.
04:42But I'm wiser now.
04:44So I make better decisions, but I still fuck up.
04:49I was always jealous because a lot of my friends could carve grind really good.
04:54And I was just like, how do you do that?
04:57And when I figured it out, I was like, oh, that's how you do it, you know?
05:04And it's just a matter of, of where your weight is on the board.
05:10Putting on some pads.
05:12You can skate the ball.
05:15It is terrifying.
05:17But I got Pete here to teach me, so it should be alright.
05:24Woo!
05:25Any tips for dropping in?
05:29Um, just ease into it.
05:32Don't try to slam it down too hard.
05:35Mm-hmm.
05:41Whoa!
05:47That was too late!
05:53If it wasn't for Peter, I would have never made anything happen in skateboarding.
05:58For me personally, he's given me the greatest gifts of all,
06:01just like, mentorship.
06:04Extremely generous.
06:06And then a great teacher.
06:08Pete's teaching me tricks.
06:10The rock and roll slide.
06:11If you ever have a problem learning a trick,
06:14or you don't have the confidence to do something,
06:17he can really just push you in a way that you've never thought you could get to.
06:22Yeah!
06:24Yeah!
06:24Yeah!
06:27Yeah!
06:30That's the best one, Whew!
06:34Yeah!
06:37Yeah!
06:39Yeah!
06:42Yeah!
06:42Yeah!
06:45Yeah!
07:06The one I always remember was at the Y, the transfer into the bank off the vert ramp.
07:19That one, I always remember that one for some reason, the Hewitt gap, yeah he fucking, he did it.
07:27That was insane.
07:37I always wanted to do the loop.
07:40Ever since I, we heard the legend of Dwayne Peters doing it, you know.
07:45And the phone rings and I answer the phone and it's like, hey this is Tony.
07:50I'm like, Tony, Tony who?
07:52Tony Hawk.
07:54We got this loop down here you know about, you know, I heard you want to try it.
07:57I was like, yes, I'm there.
07:59So I'm like, okay.
08:01So I go shooting into there and I immediately go in and I just hit this wall.
08:06And then I hit this wall and then I hit this wall and then I hit the pads finally and
08:10I'm like, wow.
08:12Eventually I start running into the pads.
08:15Okay, I think I'm ready.
08:17Take the pads out.
08:18And then I do this one and I come around and I'm used to running into the pads.
08:21So I come out and I just go and I land and my helmet pops off my head and lands
08:28in my chest.
08:30And Tony comes walking over like, are you okay?
08:32And I'm like, I'm all right.
08:33And I just get, I think I did it next try, but yeah, that was, that was an experience.
08:46Have you ever heard of the polarizer?
08:48It's 9am, warm up session.
08:51Let's go.
09:22Why do you guys do this in the morning?
09:24Polarize sesh.
09:26It's a nice way to get out of bed.
09:28It's just a good way to start the day.
09:31I came down here one morning and I was like, what are you guys doing?
09:36And I didn't really, I was like, that looks dangerous.
09:39Just rolling in without lifting up.
09:41Come on.
09:44Oh my God.
09:46Oh my God.
09:47Oh my God.
09:48Oh my God.
09:49The polarizer model is specifically convex and downturn.
09:52It's basically a board just flipped over.
09:55Just that first feeling of roller skate trucks on a skateboard, that's all it really was to begin with.
10:04What's that one called?
10:05Fight from the inside.
10:07This one's called confined spaces.
10:12This trick is really hard because the skateboard can only turn so much.
10:16But with this one, if you lean in more, it's possible.
10:21It's just got to be really good at geometry.
10:23Tight, tight, tight.
10:24Yeah.
10:25Trust.
10:26This trick that Pete is trying, Lefty called it a Pete out.
10:31And what do you call that?
10:33Roundhouse cutback.
10:34Roundhouse cutback.
10:35Lefty called it a Pete out.
10:36I have not heard that terminology before.
10:39I call it murder city.
10:40Murder city.
10:41Because of this bush right here.
10:43Yeah.
10:44It will eat you alive.
10:45Have you fallen in there before?
10:47Yes.
10:47Yeah, there's a certain point that you have to warm up correctly.
10:50You know, you come up with a routine.
10:53I have friends that are still trying to figure that out.
10:56But it depends on where you're at, too.
10:58Like, your different warm-up routine might be different somewhere else, you know?
11:11Feels good to be on the road.
11:13We're going to Nude Bowl today.
11:15Woke up 7.30.
11:16Got cement, buckets.
11:18Not even sure if it's going to be possible to skate there.
11:21Might be a fridge in the bowl or full of sand and water.
11:25You never know.
11:27But it sure feels good to be on the road with Pete and his crew.
11:33It's a special place.
11:36You feel, I feel like, re-energized when I go out there.
11:40Yeah, it's a power spot.
11:42Get in the pool and you just melt into the thing.
11:51It looks like nobody's skated here in a while.
11:55And the thing is so steep, too.
11:57I came here once before and I don't remember it being that steep.
12:02But low skating, it's like coming to a skate spot and you've got to fix it up.
12:07And the thing to skate is not super perfect.
12:10It's not easy.
12:13Every pool's different.
12:16They're not going to be there for very long.
12:20You have to get it when you can get it.
12:24It's like when the waves are good, you have to surf them when they're there.
12:29So, it's a challenge.
13:09I like the feeling.
13:10I like going in the air.
13:14I like going fast.
13:23Sometimes I'm like,
13:24Yeah, well, maybe that's the last time.
13:25But, I mean, I have so many times, I'm like,
13:28Nah, this is going to continue.
13:36What does skateboarding mean to you?
13:39What does it mean?
13:44Skateboarding.
13:56Yeah.
13:58Yeah, dude.
14:01Yeah, that one's...
14:09Yeah.
14:11That's what it means.
14:24You're going to do that from're going to dedim.
14:24It never was the last clinic.
14:24It's exactly what I've seen.
14:24It was kind of oui.
14:24Maybe it was the next old company.
14:24It was just 5 years.
14:25Then on the dad,
14:25Greg's had to prevent PRN.
