00:01:11we're looking forward to our surprise oh um the surprise um here you go gorgeous plate I just love
00:01:24the scalloped edging gold banding yeah really nice it was mainly me welcome to the new series of the
00:01:32great pottery throwdown thousands applied but just 12 of the nation's best home potters look at this
00:01:41have made it through the iconic gates of Gladstone for all potters lesson is like our Mecca it's our
00:01:47church our cathedral it's like playing Hogwarts and it smells amazing I can smell creation what does
00:01:56creation smell I think it smells quite like sweat actually I'm gonna be honest but that could be me
00:02:00because I'm rather nervous over the next 10 weeks our potters will face 20 brand new challenges don't
00:02:07panic turning lumps of raw clay into stunning ceramics I'm gonna be making stuff that I would never make
00:02:15which is what I'm excited for but also terrified about breathe breathe pottery everything about it
00:02:22is experimental you don't jump onto the wheel and not have a disaster anyone that tells you that are
00:02:26telling you lies that's a shame everything they make will be judged by renowned ceramicist Rich Miller
00:02:35that is gorgeous and master potter Keith Brimer Jones that's great but yeah I would love to make
00:02:46Keith cry sometimes he'll cry because he feels sorry for you I don't want them tears no no no no
00:02:51I want the ones that are like
00:02:52what do you mean lovey you know he always says lovey doesn't he lovey oh lovey it's amazing I love
00:02:58that
00:03:00each week the best of the bunch will be named passer of the week let's give me some clay just

00:03:05happy days and one will leave the pottery I need to keep breathing my blood pressure will increase
00:03:11after all this I'm not known for being neat and tidy there's clay up the walls I'm yeah I'll hold

00:04:11magnificent gladstone pottery museum
00:04:15our 12 new potters will tackle two brand new challenges after which one will be named potter of
00:04:21the week and one will leave the pottery hello and a very very warm welcome to you all it's so
00:04:36lovely
00:04:36to have you all here look at your shiny new faces you do look a bit nervous but don't worry
00:04:41we'll soon
00:04:41have you all settled in and cozy because for your first main make challenge this week the judges would
00:04:50like you to make a soup set based on your perfect winter's evening now Keith and Rich would like
00:04:57you to make a large soup tureen with a lid and a sculpted knob two soup bowls with logs and
00:05:05a ladle
00:05:05now Keith have you any advice for our lovely new potters yeah well look this challenge features a
00:05:11really good range of techniques as well as shapes and forms whether you prefer throwing hand building or
00:05:18sculpting there's an opportunity here to show us what you can really do we're really keen to get
00:05:24to know you as people and as potters yeah so think about how you'll tell us about your perfect winter's
00:05:30evening through your soup set carefully consider your construction and your decoration and how you'll
00:05:36bring all of the pieces together as a cohesive set and look i know it's a bit daunting but just
00:05:42enjoy
00:05:43the clay because that's why we're here isn't it rich yeah yeah definitely oh dear i'm off already
00:05:51that's a record all right potters the time has come you have been given six hours to make and refine
00:06:01your soup sets and your time starts now potters get potting
00:06:11i can't believe it this is nuts i am feeling just a mix of everything i don't know when my
00:06:17emotions are
00:06:17right now to be honest although the first touch of clay and you're like oh this is great i love
00:06:23this
00:06:23not so much the wedging part wedging is a time consuming but crucial first step so i'm wedging just
00:06:29to make sure that the clay is really consistent all the way through helping to remove any air
00:06:34bubbles that could expand the heat of the kiln with disastrous results you don't want exploding also
00:06:39when you're throwing it it can distort the shape as well i'm feeling a lot calmer now i've actually
00:06:45felt some mud rich here we are again at gladstone indeed 12 new potters they're going to share their
00:06:53creativity with us yeah and what a wonderful challenge to start with a soup set being a domestic
00:06:59wear challenge these tureens they have to be the right weight you don't want the making of it to be
00:07:04so heavy that you can't actually pick it up when it's full of soup yeah and big lids when something's
00:07:10got a lid obviously it's got a fit hasn't it and then of course they've got the ladle oh ladles
00:07:15ladles give me cold shivers any element that's long and thin made of clay is just asking for problems so
00:07:22i'm going to be fascinated to see how our potters go about creating those ladles i mean all of this
00:07:27has to feel like a cohesive set ultimately we want to learn about our potters as people don't we
00:07:32all of these elements like lugs like the sculpted knobs they've got the real opportunity to kind of
00:07:37form a story about their perfect winter's evening yeah absolutely so i wonder which of our potter sets
00:07:44is going to be soup uh tumbleweed i think that was a bit of tumbleweed hello lovely hi how are

00:08:00yeah oh i love well look tell us about your design yeah well winter's days um not everyone's cup of
00:08:06tea
00:08:07particularly muddy wet ones but i've got two rescue dogs gaia and bramble and they have to be walked they
00:08:12don't care if it's filthy weather the best bit is is when it's over when you're coming back in yeah
00:08:17when the heating's been on and the dogs are all curled up on their blankets and how glad i am
00:08:22that
00:08:22it's over kaz lives in swansea with her daughter lily and son sol a recently retired psychiatric nurse
00:08:29she keeps busy studying for a ceramics degree and walking bramble and gaia dog down the centerpiece
00:08:36of her soup set the tureen features a sculpted knob in the form of another pet link the cat and
00:08:41will
00:08:42sit on three muddy walking boots oh that's brave big old shape on three little boots yeah so you're
00:08:48going to sculpt these yeah i'm going to sculpt them hopefully they'll dry enough to support the weight
00:08:52of the tureen if not unlock a bit off the tureen and make it lighter well done hi thank you
00:08:57yeah
00:08:59so here we go the biggest piece of the soup set brilliant that's great the judges have demanded a tureen
00:09:09large enough to feed four it's a beast isn't it it probably wouldn't feed four people in my house
00:09:15but maybe in someone's house starting with a well compressed base is crucial if the foundation's
00:09:22weak the potters could face cracks once the pot's been fired oh god breathe breathe i'm getting the
00:09:30shape that i want and also i'm nearly at the height yep looking good on measurement but while the rest
00:09:35of
00:09:35the tureens take shape top done a bit small navid's on take two i'm not quite happy size wise so
00:09:45i've
00:09:45started again performing on stage and screen for over 20 years actor navid lives in kent where he and
00:09:52wife charlotte run a toy shop with the help of their daughters mabel and luna navid set celebrates
00:10:02nights in gaming online with his friends in angular forms and sparse black and white decoration a nod to
00:10:08the digital world oh what's this like binary code this is this is binary code so it says stop nav
00:10:13in
00:10:13binary code one of the first times that we played together the rest of them created a group privately
00:10:18called stop nav so they want to stop me from winning so oh i love i love the humble brag
00:10:23there
00:10:23oh it's very hard well there's some failures oh my gosh you've only been here five minutes i know
00:10:29i want to make myself feel like i'm at home do you live in a slag heap it's just i'm
00:10:33surrounded by
00:10:34disasters finn enjoys a bit of friendly competition too i do love a board game when it comes to playing
00:10:41monopoly me and my stepdaughter do make a pretty lethal team it's not a pretty sight for anybody but what's
00:10:47a family evening without a little bit of um light-hearted competition between it's a it's a
00:10:53it's not in a shell i can't eat but people really like them and they put lemon juice on top
00:10:57and yeah
00:10:58finn lives in cornwall with his partner marnie her children cameron and maddie and their six dash
00:11:03aunts no all gone a tattoo artist when he's not inking skin he brings his artistic skills to his ceramics
00:11:10and he'll use decoration to tell the story of a cozy games night in sheltering from a cornish storm
00:11:15while two of the dogs sleep peacefully at the bottom of his soup bowls wow incredible
00:11:21illustration thank you so how are all of these elements apply if you've got sort of sprigs or
00:11:26all the decorations hand paint more so there'll be um sort of like watercolor application of underglaze
00:11:31and then i use uh just a slip trail tool i mean it looks like an ambitious design there's a
00:11:35lot there
00:11:37olympia says also features a four-legged friend my design is a story about me and my dog having a
00:11:43winter's evening walk in the park and then eventually we end with a movie night in
00:11:49olympia lives in the midlands just around the corner from her grandma thelma a movie buff
00:11:54when she's not making her own short films she loves watching them with star of the show solace
00:12:03solace is front and center of her set too as well as a dog tail ladle she'll cover her cinema
00:12:08ticket
00:12:09top tureen in film's strict decoration depicting his latest adventures how old is he he's seven oh my
00:12:16gosh and the energy still hasn't gone right do you think solace would like he's not going anywhere
00:12:21near these he'd absolutely destroy them potters the drying room is now open oh it's got a handle thank you
00:12:32oh come on get in you've never opened that door before in your life have you with their tureens
00:12:38thrown happy days happy enough it's all right considering and safely stored in the drying room
00:12:45every time i look at it i think oh just fix that just fix that and oh look everyone's just
00:12:49walking
00:12:50into the drying room like attention can turn to lids and just making sure it matches up with my soup
00:12:56tureen
00:12:57perfect measurements are key a millimetre out and they could be presenting a pot with a wobbly top
00:13:02just like half a centimetre out at the minute so i'm just pulling this out ever so slightly but size
00:13:08isn't kaylee's only concern my lid is in the style of a bobble hat so it's quite a large hand
00:13:15-built
00:13:15piece that i'm adding to my pop our teacher kaylee and bobble hat obsessed husband chris
00:13:20live in oxfordshire with peter the cat and their two bunnies newt and ginny named after harry potter
00:13:26inspired by her love of nature she'll immortalize her pets and underglays and base her ladle and
00:13:32logs on toadstools but when it comes to recreating chris's bobble hat she's using something close to
00:13:38rich's heart i've 3d printed some texture there so it's got a lovely oh can we can i get them
00:13:44out
00:13:44yeah you can touch it yeah wow wow mark's made sure his tureen's wrapped up warm too it's got a
00:13:54little
00:13:54scarf and a pair of mitts for going out in the cold my suit set is called blind scouse in
00:14:01liverpool
00:14:01blind scouse is for people that couldn't afford the meat so it was a vegetarian dish an engineer
00:14:07by trade mark's a man of many hobbies even building his own beehive he lives in merseyside with his wife
00:14:13of 40 years wendy cup of tea mother mark sets dedicated to the two loves of his life he'll
00:14:21adorn his set in red hearts for wendy and add a sprig recreation of his hearth where he cooks his
00:14:27hearty scouse soup it's a real focal point isn't it so how thick is this sprig going to be
00:14:33right oh it's gonna be quite yeah no it's gonna say yeah it's a couple of millimeters okay i like
00:14:39you you're messing with them already yeah just be careful with the big sprigs yeah make sure they're
00:14:43well attached i've just finished the lid and now i'm going to create the little balls while a smaller
00:14:50soup ball might seem simpler to throw than a huge tureen keith and rich have demanded two of them
00:14:56identical in shape and size i don't make identical stuff very often i've made a first which i'm
00:15:03happy enough with one of one is looking great uh yeah it's matching itself really well this is the
00:15:10second bowl they're fairly symmetrical close cousins rather than brother and sister soup bowls i'm feeling
00:15:16okay with they'll be what they need to be the idea is based off of winter's walk that i do
00:15:23with my best
00:15:23friends the soup bowls are going to be the start in the end of the walk after 15 years spent
00:15:29as a
00:15:29wig assistant in london's west end anne harrod returned home to south wales where she lives with
00:15:35her mom and stepdad who are both deaf she's now a communication support worker assisting mom michelle's
00:15:41work for a cancer charity anne harrod's set is simple in form providing a blank canvas for the many
00:15:47monochrome vignettes she'll paint snapshots of the joyful days she spends walking with her friends
00:15:52and the fun doesn't always end there we will go back to my best friend's house and have something
00:15:58on tv oh maybe the great pottery do you think future you is now having a bowl of soup
00:16:03can you see her in there no i can't look at it oh he's fishing with um ob bromwin and

00:16:12probably oh god mate and adam adam yeah what's he like i know hey listen i've been meaning to ask
00:16:24when
00:16:24does the ship come in it doesn't a submarine no soup tureens not submarine soup tureen
00:16:34oh this is a bit embarrassing halfway through potters halfway through
00:16:41don't look at me my bowls are so chunky like me could afford to lose a few pounds with bowls
00:16:48in the
00:16:49bag the potters now face their first hand-built piece so we're gonna pull the ladle it's a bit
00:16:54rude this bit isn't it the piece i'm making now is the spoon element of the ladle which represents a
00:16:59mushroom and the handle hopefully will turn into a stick the handle's based on the ladder from snakes
00:17:05and ladders my ladle's supposed to look like my dog's tail i haven't made a label before but it is
00:17:10a bowl
00:17:11and a handle so i've made both of those things and the ladle have a dickens character in it's around
00:17:15the
00:17:15whole idea of reading by the fire curling up with my husband will and getting lost in another world
00:17:20an english teacher for 20 years andrew lives in hampshire with his husband will
00:17:24as well as a love of literature and ceramics andrew's a keen artist too i need some new pencils
00:17:30nothing left he'll combine his passions to bring his dickens inspired set to life
00:17:35with hand-painted illustrations of mr pickwick miss haversham and oliver twist there's a lovely
00:17:41softness to your drawing to your illustrations i just hope you can get that same kind of quality
00:17:46on the tureens and the bowls but blue it's a strong pigment yeah if you want to get that subtlety
00:17:51with
00:17:51those yeah well i'm gonna knock it back with a bit of black so a bit careful with my color
00:17:55mixing well
00:17:55good luck thanks yeah really good luck potters that's four hours gone two hours remaining the potters
00:18:04soup sets are now leather hard and dry enough to be refined trimming away excess clay to achieve the
00:18:10smooth beautifully finished surfaces the judges expect this is where you can turn something
00:18:15relatively ugly and poorly made into something a little bit more finished make all bright it's also
00:18:23their final chance to ensure the tureen lids fit okay not far off i just need this to sit down
00:18:30more
00:18:30flush but the potters must take care it does go wrong sometimes you can make a hole straight through it
00:18:36any mistakes at this stage could be catastrophic i have gone through the bottom plenty of times
00:18:41hopefully not today i don't have any spares so i can't go through them
00:18:57i've knocked it
00:19:00the rim it snapped and it just come off somewhere
00:19:11just 19 minutes remain and a piece of mark's soup bowl is missing
00:19:20ah
00:19:22so we've we've knocked the piece off the bowl we found the needle in the haystack but there's a
00:19:28good chance that this piece might not survive the firing that would be the disaster wouldn't it
00:19:35it's it's a big risk what are you making i'm making a little movie night in ticket for the knob
00:19:43the tureen's knob is a chance for the potters to show off their sculpting skills that's link the cat
00:19:49the missing link because you can never find her but beautiful knobs won't be enough to satisfy keith
00:19:54and rich i've decided to throw a tiny soup bowl it will sit on top of some logs like a
00:20:00campfire they must
00:20:02be functional too comfortable in the hand and able to take the weight of the lid
00:20:06that'll make you stick whitney was born and raised in hong kong where his dad was a policeman
00:20:11he now lives in glasgow with partner ally and their cats archer and ellie teaching chemistry at a
00:20:16local high school whitney's soup sets inspired by night's camping under a star-filled night sky with
00:20:22ally keeping warm by the campfire and enjoying the peace and quiet of the forest
00:20:26do you find pottery calming oh pottery have um given me a lot thinking about my mental health
00:20:33oh um it's definitely a place where i learned how to let go did you cling on to things before
00:20:38yeah i still do when they're rogers and you know who you are this snob is going to be my
00:20:47daughter
00:20:47ailsa she's my eldest she's nine my absolute favorite thing to do in the winter is go ice
00:20:52skating on the little lochen near where we live and she's a really cracking skater actually she loves
00:20:56doing power slides on her knees it's fun originally from bristol emily's heart now belongs to the scottish
00:21:03highlands where she lives with husband sam and children ailsa juniper and huey an ecologist emily's
00:21:09a world expert in mountain fungi and has even discovered new species from her local forest to
00:21:15the animals who live by the lochen emily will cover her soup set and illustrations celebrating the local
00:21:20thriving ecosystem with elsa the crowning glory gliding gracefully above her terrain one leg up two arms
00:21:27out and hopefully not falling over elham's also been inspired by a fond winter memory
00:21:33with her kids it's based on a cozy winter's evening at my mom's house my son watching out
00:21:39of the window seeing a little fox take his shoe run away with it we did find it again in
00:21:43the morning
00:21:43but it was just so cute he still thinks that like a fox was like playing a trick on him
00:21:47originally from
00:21:48manchester midwife elham now lives in sheffield with husband essan and sons yusuf and eunice
00:21:55kept busy by two boys under four she likes to unwind with a spot of mixed martial arts
00:22:01she meant it yeah elham's set will be simply decorated to show off the sculpted animals found
00:22:08in her mom's garden including the mischievous fox stealing a shoe while her son sleep in the handles
00:22:14of her soup bowls are they excited that you're on this they don't know i can't trust them surprise
00:22:21look who it is it's your mom have you told your husband yeah my husband knows because he's looking
00:22:25after them he's a bit like she's she's gone out from milking off a long time yeah potters that's one
00:22:33hour left one hour left so why are you dressed as a sailor i don't want to talk about it
00:22:45this is forming the bottom trim of the bobble hat it's racing against the clock now as the potters
00:22:52push on adding decorative elements and securely attaching their knobs handles and lugs the lugs
00:22:58are going to look like the snakes kind of going in and out of the bowl from the outside just
00:23:03touching
00:23:03up my knob to go on the lid with the rim of his soup bowl repaired it's time for mark
00:23:09to stick his giant
00:23:11sprig the first sprigs on the log burner these cottages have got a bit of subsides haven't
00:23:16and bill's hoping his look good enough to eat my cozy night in is biscuits watching films and reading
00:23:23books and just sitting in my lazy boy with a giant cup of tea bill lives in herefordshire where he
00:23:29volunteers at a local ceramic studio after struggling at school due to his autism he was introduced to
00:23:35clay by his grandmother betty oh that's brilliant and it's a bond they've shared ever since
00:23:40how's your pig going it's born covered in sprig replicas of his favorite biscuits bill's tureen
00:23:47will sit on piles of books and he'll sculpt a knob in the shape of his armchair with a giant
00:23:52cup of
00:23:52tea for dunking his custard creams they look lovely those books i stack everything on books are we just
00:23:58going to find you under a big stack of books and and custard creams sunday cause of death what a
00:24:04way
00:24:05to go yeah what a way to go may we all be so lucky potters half an hour left 30
00:24:13minutes left
00:24:15timing seems to be flying by chronically behind schedule and i've still got to get my sprigs on
00:24:19and assemble my ladles sprigging like crazy half a packet of biscuits left to go
00:24:25this is hilarious oh thanks it's a very serious piece of art and i wanted to ask you a question
00:24:31oh please what have you come as is it a ship ahoy day are we all going to do songs

00:24:38are we going to climb the rigging at tea time i just thought i looked cute it's doing it for
00:24:44me
00:24:45hello sailor this is yousef he's only got a sock on the fox took his show i am indenting my
00:24:51signs so
00:24:52you can just see oliver twist on the inside there holding out a bowl i'm gonna carve in wood flooring
00:24:58this tureen would probably feed four not very greedy people you'll fit four cup of soups in it easily
00:25:06that's what i was aiming for right potters that's 10 minutes left
00:25:10oh and remember you need to have all of your soup set items in the drying room by the end
00:25:18of this
00:25:18session it's going to be close i've still got a bit to do i've got the hearts to put on
00:25:24i've got the
00:25:24board game pieces to go on the bottom i don't think i have ever quoted this fast ever i'm normally
00:25:29very
00:25:29very slow i'm just going to scoop the hole out the hole that's the bit i need to do otherwise

00:25:37ladle will not be going in there i have no idea what time it is we are coming very close

00:25:42minutes left potters keep breathing anybody who hasn't started bringing their soup set into the
00:25:49drying room i would gently and nautically urge you to do so don't drop it andrew well done welcome to

00:26:41that's it there's nothing more the potters can do once dry princess will take the soup sets for their
00:26:47first bisque firing which will harden the clay ready for decoration oh wow i'm glad that's over
00:26:57i've damaged the lip on one of the soup bowls i think we've repaired it providing it survives the
00:27:02kill i think the set's near to where i wanted it but um i have got a couple of concerns
00:27:08i don't know
00:27:08whether it's quite big enough not too confident hopefully no explosions worst case scenario the lugs
00:27:16blow off my soup bowl the dogs blow off my tureen the boots fall off and i'm left with a
00:27:22small pile of
00:27:23shards
00:27:29each week the potters face a second challenge throwing throwing something what they'll be asked
00:27:36to make is a mystery bodies but this time it's something useful for those who like to keep a lid
00:27:42on
00:27:42things welcome back potters to your first second challenge and this week it's a throwdown yeah i love
00:27:50the way you're giggling it feels like you're the one with the secret not us well i'll tell you something
00:27:57that you definitely don't know this week you will be making oh it's a beautiful jar with a gallery oh
00:28:13and to teach us how it's done mr keith brimer jones keith please take the wheel
00:28:18so you've got a piece of clay which is about a pound this is a really efficient way of creating
00:28:25a gallery what is a gallery the gallery is what the lid sits in make your hole bring it out
00:28:32you want
00:28:33that base to be fairly wide then bring it up compress that rim that rim is really really important
00:28:40because that's going to be what you're creating the gallery out of now this is the clever bit slow the
00:28:45wheel down fold that over and then with your finger just come down and make that lovely gallery
00:28:53then take out the water now i'm going to use a sponge on a stick clean it up a bit
00:28:57make sure that
00:28:59that gallery is nicely defined and then just wire it off the wheel there you go is it possible to
00:29:08change
00:29:08the width of the gallery when you're throwing it yeah you could make it slightly wider or slightly narrower
00:29:14according to what kind of lid size you want yeah well it doesn't really matter for this what the width
00:29:19is
00:29:24because here we have a lid and we want the gallery eight centimeters wide to fit this lid now potters
00:29:32back to your benches you have been given 20 minutes to make as many galleries jars as you can and
00:29:41your time
00:29:42start now remove the hessian off they go okay let's go
00:29:51breeze trying to center it but i have a wobble on the top i'm just bringing the walls up kind
00:29:56of like
00:29:57a conical shape i'm going bright red i can feel it in my face what do you reckon is more
00:30:01important the
00:30:02form of the jar or the fit of the lid if that lid fits that gallery and the form isn't
00:30:07brilliant
00:30:07we can go easy someone's nobbled me clay you want that rim to be nice and even olympia yeah get
00:30:17that
00:30:17really in control hello what do you think of this challenge when we finished the soup tureens i really
00:30:23made an informed decision to never do a gallery again and now without consent actually i'm having
00:30:28to do a gallery do you want me to bring hr into it please yeah i'll get them i'm not
00:30:34sure what he did
00:30:35with the gallery i didn't see properly but i'm just gonna try just attempting to fold it over oh

00:38:49it's day two the potter's soup sets have spent 24 hours in the kiln
00:38:57undergoing their first bisque firing and are now ready for decoration i'm feeling excited i enjoy this
00:39:03part of it what are your decorating skills like it's not awful but whether they have anything to
00:39:11decorate is a mystery hidden by hessian i am nervous um i didn't sleep that well in my head i've
00:39:18run
00:39:18through loads of different scenarios of like if if the bottom blows off or if the lid's cracked just
00:39:23hoping those biscuits stayed on and lugs as well i like jigsaws but not one that i don't know where
00:39:29the
00:39:30pieces go i can't stick lugs back on there oh god
00:39:38hello potters and welcome back as you can see your soup sets have been bisque fired
00:39:44and are lying under the hessian ready to be decorated judges any tips although we've asked
00:39:50for your soup bowls to be identical in size and form we'd like you to decorate them differently but
00:39:55remember we are looking for a set so don't go too off piste consistent and coherent decorations required
00:40:02to bring everything together now we want you to play to your strengths here we want to really see
00:40:07all those decorative skills that you have but remember these are functional pieces so we don't
00:40:12want any lids sticking or dirty bottoms dirty bottoms was only a matter of time all right then potters
00:40:18you have been given a range of glazes and oxides and three hours to use them and your time starts
00:40:26now
00:40:26potters get decorating oh goodness oh my god ah sick yay everybody happy any bits falling off no we're okay
00:40:43oh no i have lost a tail of a cat and one of my boots has come off but if
00:40:50anything could go wrong
00:40:51that's about the best thing to go wrong because there's still a little lug left and i'll be able
00:40:55to just put some glaze on and that will actually stick back on i have had a bit of disaster
00:41:00with my lid
00:41:01it does have a massive ash crack but i'm going to try and fill it with glaze as much as
00:41:06i can
00:41:06i'm relieved today yeah this is the piece that broke off it survived it's in one piece once that
00:41:14glaze goes on we'll be on the wiser the bottom hasn't blown off that's good but there is a crack
00:41:20yes crack but it's a small one i think anybody will notice to help them tell the stories behind their
00:41:28soup sets the potters have a range of underglazes and oxides at their fingertips i'm only using blacks
00:41:34and keep the black all to myself they're just mixing up my colors these are paracetamol syringes
00:41:40from the kids ideal for glazes i'm starting on my figurine my daughter ailsa has stayed on
00:41:45anna i really just want to do her justice as well there really is just no better feeling for me
00:41:50than
00:41:51gliding across ice your arms outstretched and you're looking at the winter sky it's the most free
00:41:56feeling in the world i really want to capture that on her face how the potters choose to apply
00:42:01these lasers will have a huge impact on the set's final look so that's my dog salith which means sun
00:42:08even though he's a snow dog he's a husky it suits him because he's so happy and fun going so
00:42:13it's very
00:42:14colorful oranges yellows i want it to be like storybook so i'm going to do one coat that watercolor
00:42:21vibe i've got to do this justice now especially with that s crack i'm using a sponge and silver paint
00:42:27brush layering up three slightly different colors hopefully it should come out almost marbled mark's
00:42:33also relying on a cozy color palette for his blind scouse soup set it's very reminiscent of painting
00:42:38our first house we couldn't afford wallpaper so we painted it using this effect and never changed it
00:42:45afterwards but before they add color just drawing a bunch of leaves to look like they're blowing in
00:42:50the wind both finn and elham are taking the time to sketch their designs it's like being at work just
00:42:55drawing on pots instead of people but no needles in the clearance a little bit more still than the
00:43:00ones i'm used to so yeah hello lovey hi keith so you're going for this kind of black and white
00:43:05feel
00:43:06yeah yeah i still want to stay in that sort of digital world and yeah yeah monochrome zero and ones
00:43:11and then black and white it's quite a brave move yeah there's not much hide behind it yeah yeah but

00:43:17really see beauty and simplicity well so do i so yeah i'm hoping yeah good managed to yeah brilliant
00:43:23yeah well we'll see yeah i am just trying to get a couple of layers on these snakes because these
00:43:31are the bits that are going to be brighter sketch is finished finn's finally able to add the color
00:43:36that'll bring his board game inspired set to life the bottom has got splodges to look like sort of like
00:43:41board game squares the rest of this is going to have like chess pieces jigsaw pieces little dice lots of
00:43:48illustrations and while he plans to wow the judges with his decoration rich design it's going to be
00:43:54pushing it to the wire with getting all this done on time that's for sure to tell the story of

00:43:59that stole a shoe for elham less is more i'll be decorating the animals and the kids but i'm leaving
00:44:06the actual base just the clay color because i just want everything to pop a bit more i love this

00:44:24glazes and undergoes pencil as well oh an underglaze pencil i thought it would be a good way to get
00:44:29that kind of sketchiness to my design so i've got one here sharpened at the ready this is the first

00:44:34the season is welcome kaylee's not the only potter keen to add extra character to their illustrations
00:44:41that's oliver with his bowl fairly loosely painted but it's not a permanent ceramic pencil that andrew's
00:44:48reached for i'm using a slip trailer to outline the edges i very rarely use underglazes but i do
00:44:53like the way they work like paint and i do paint so i'm enjoying the kind of graphic quality of
00:44:57them
00:44:58i'm keeping in the cold color range to kind of tie them all together and then bright yellow red orange
00:45:03for
00:45:03the inside of the terrain i mean the idea there is a bit of theater a bit of a surprise
00:45:07because
00:45:07everything else is blue and then when you actually pop the lid as well as a lovely s crack it's
00:45:13really
00:45:13lovely warm colors but a diverse color palette isn't part of anne harrod's plan you've got quite
00:45:19a lot of green going on yeah it's all the same color it's going to be very monotone i've got
00:45:22little
00:45:23vignettes are going to go across all of the soup bowls and the terrain and they're kind of diluted with
00:45:27different amounts of water so it should be like a watercolor i see so these are the different shades
00:45:32you're going to use for like the light and dark and getting tones as it comes to the foreground i'm
00:45:35going to be going in with darker layers goodness it's a brave approach it's a really brave approach
00:45:40because they all look the same i've got i've got numbers on the fronts of everyone so i kind of
00:45:44know it is a real gamble yeah but if it works i know it'll be beautiful so i'm going to

00:46:23got archie in the other they're very loud very opinionated painted the heart better need a couple
00:46:29of coats just to make sure that color pops it's conscious of time now really and i still gotta do
00:46:33the sprigs i'm decorating the kids no i'm not on track and elham's not alone i'm about to draw a
00:46:44white fire pit and then put some flames on the lid as well whitney's still decorating his first piece
00:46:50i still got the bowls and the ladle to do but you know what they're all black so i can
00:46:55just slap it on
00:46:55started on my illustrations of me and my mates on the soup bowls started off for myself i know that

00:47:02quite well what do you think so those are my animals i get really excited over the daily visits
00:47:09from my pigeons at home my favorite pigeon was feeding from my hand oh there he is that was nice
00:47:14he came to say good luck in a very weird pigeon way i'm pleased with that looks quite illustrative but
00:47:20drawn competition some really really good illustration going on and some beautiful sprigs i mean those
00:47:25biscuits you could eat them bill's biscuits get these bourbons done to add texture to his favorite
00:47:32chocolatey treat as well as under glaze bill's using oxides this is red iron oxide it seeps into
00:47:39the small crevices pulling out the definition bring out that sort of biscuity richness but oxides are
00:47:46risky oh how they'll react in the heat of the kiln is always unpredictable i've mixed red iron oxide and
00:47:53i put a little bit of copper oxide in it because i know that sort of goes brown quite often
00:47:59even
00:47:59though it looks bright green and kaz is gambling on them to bring out the wooden texture she embossed
00:48:04onto her terrain i think that's quite wood floorboardy but is it going to look a bit too brown
00:48:13potters we've half an hour left oh my god i'm in it with you guys i i will not let
00:48:20you alone in this
00:48:22very difficult could i have a cup of tea please i am up against the wire with time everything i've
00:48:28got to outline and i've still got a lot of underglazing to do i'm using the toothbrush to take some
00:48:33white underglaze onto the black a bit of a starry night effect just putting some fringes on the little
00:48:39dog's blankets just need to keep moving i'm painting the face of the moons onto the lid i might write
00:48:46the
00:48:47names of some of the places dependent on time behind massively i think i'm moving on to the ladle
00:48:52which is visual binary code so rather noughts and ones it's black or white boxes says nav just in
00:48:58case someone reads visual binary that's watching i am doing the little movie night ticket on the top

00:50:37stick the cat's tail on i don't think it will stick on but i made it so i'll try and

00:51:22i decorated as much as i could was it a bit sloppy in some areas because of running out of

00:52:46oh my god i mean it was so brave to just go with one color but it shows confidence all

00:52:53illustrations on here are really nice and subtle it's very coherent you've got the color that ties
00:52:59it all together and you've got that core shape with the lug that carries through all of the pieces
00:53:03the proportions are good between the terrine and the size of the soup bowls this is lovely thank
00:53:10you but you've got a bit of a crack okay but actually the overall quality of the making is fabulous
00:53:17this has all been turned so beautifully and i like the fact that you've written on the base there
00:53:21each place it's such a lovely touch well done lovey are you ready bill yes

00:53:36i love this idea of the biscuits it works like a biscuit full stop yeah exactly yeah i think the
00:53:42terrine is the star for me you've got the odd sprig that's springing yeah but the detail you've
00:53:49gone in and there's layers of texture that just enhances the surface and the little books that it's
00:53:54stacked on you know it just feels like a comfy night in books a biscuit cup of tea cup of
00:53:59tea
00:54:00look at the size of that cup of tea the chair on top of the lid you should be proud
00:54:03of that bill
00:54:08it's amazing isn't it that you can take such a simple design like the mushroom through the whole
00:54:13story and it works really really well as lugs inspired the underglazed pencil has worked beautifully
00:54:20it kind of makes it like a quentin blake illustration i love the way you've treated every surface with
00:54:26the same level of respect and attention to detail the surface of the woolly hat is just brilliant and
00:54:31as a centerpiece it's great yeah the only thing i would say is is the tureen big enough it could
00:54:36just
00:54:37chris and i so yes the boots have stayed on i was so worried about those you've even
00:54:50got your tail on there yeah it's a pottery miracle it was a miracle but when you were putting color
00:54:57over this i was thinking oh my goodness it's just going to be a whole field of brown but actually
00:55:02the
00:55:02copper is kicking through quite nicely giving it a green tinge this kind of incised work has just been
00:55:08highlighted have you ever made anything this big before no i haven't and i thought it was going to be
00:55:13rubbish lovely you should be really proud of that i'm chuffed well done
00:55:27oh okay oh dear oh god
00:55:41unfortunately you have got a bit that did stick from the glaze but i love these mittens yeah it's that
00:55:46attention to detail the way the form carries through from your tureen to your bowls and the
00:55:51accuracy of the throwing they're bang on this ladle is bloody good by the way thank you that's great
00:56:00i've cried over a ladle now but though that's really good and this is a great weight it is a
00:56:06good
00:56:06one and i will add big sprig stayed on that was a huge risk to do that yeah well done
00:56:11yeah a really nice
00:56:12thought out set it was always a major risk going with a lot of black but the fact that you've
00:56:21got
00:56:21some speckles of white pigment emulating the night sky it seems to work quite well really yeah i love
00:56:27the little campfire with the pot that's just exquisite but i wonder whether the hole is a little
00:56:33on the small side i feel a bit like the bowls and the ladle almost forgotten about yeah the main
00:56:39tureen just in terms of the amount of decoration this is wonderful thank you the sculpted models
00:56:51are beautiful in their own right but then coupled with the lovely subtle decoration and the brushwork
00:56:58and the little bits of texture that you've picked out this like matte of leaves that the owl is sitting
00:57:02on works so well and i think it just works really well as a set you've been brave enough to
00:57:08go with a
00:57:09very plain simplistic approach and that's kind of a blank canvas for these individual exquisite
00:57:15little items to really pop and really sing in their own right yeah lovely
00:57:25when we first saw your design there was loads of elements that really worried me about it your choice
00:57:31of form you know that very angular shape your choice of decoration to just go black and white but
00:57:38actually it feels kind of futuristic and of a digital age somehow it has a much more painterly
00:57:44quality than i thought it might have yeah your illustration really nice do they look like your
00:57:48pals they look identical to my pals came over oh very good very hard to do it's difficult enough to
00:57:57get a hand i would imagine yeah yeah you know why it's difficult to get your hand in it's too
00:58:01small
00:58:01because your tureen's a bit on the small side yeah ready oh yeah
00:58:20oh wow that's fantastic feel that wow that's brilliant the piece itself is quite sizable and then
00:58:28you pick it up and it's actually the right way that's absolutely brilliant i'm just astounded the
00:58:33amount of decoration you've covered the entire surface in such incredibly beautiful energetic
00:58:40work i mean it's just that is gorgeous it's so aligned with your theme that idea of games
00:58:47you know it just feels gestural and playful there are little bits like the squares around the base that
00:58:53feels not quite as proficient as some of the other elements but given the amount you've got on there
00:58:58i mean the other thing about it is that bowl shape that you've managed to get inside the tureen
00:59:04it's really really well made you pleased with it i'm so happy with how that came out yeah very cool
00:59:20oh no oh i can't cross through this again oh hey there we are yeah
00:59:29yes i know yeah compression when you're throwing something flat and wide really compress the clay
00:59:36but this really love it it does look like a cinema ticket yeah i mean you say you're not a
00:59:41confident
00:59:41thrower but in terms of the size of the bowls and the accuracy of the form they're pretty good i
00:59:47just
00:59:47wonder whether it would be nice to have seen perhaps a little more crispness to certain areas of the
00:59:52decoration you have unfortunately got a little split okay in there again it's that compression
01:00:05i absolutely love the way that you've approached the kind of forest look accentuating the trees
01:00:12and the bark with those nice little slip trailings yeah it's just such a well thought out set the
01:00:18proportions of your tureen to your bowls is bang on the making is just exquisite and the character that
01:00:23you've managed to create just in this sculpted form and you open the lid and reveal another lovely
01:00:29illustration it's just a beautiful story bound up in really well-made objects you should be really
01:00:35proud of yourself ready three bowls and a handy stick

01:00:58these are brilliant they're absolutely brilliant these illustrations inside the bowls are wonderful
01:01:06aren't they yeah these are far exceeded my expectations there's just such a lovely quality
01:01:11to it it's kind of ethereal i just love the way you've gone in with the white over the top

01:01:15yeah to create sort of snowflakes it feels wintery it looks moody doesn't it wow look at that and
01:01:22there's your surprise yeah yeah there's another surprise as well there's a slight crack yeah the bowls
01:01:29exactly the same shape exactly the same size the attention to detail in just the ladle the decoration
01:01:35the way that you've decorated the outside of it and the inside it's really really detailed why did it
01:01:42break because i smashed it uh just not being careful when i was decorating it's such a shame
01:01:52clumsiness very disappointing i really wasn't expecting the decoration to come out quite so
01:01:57nicely and the judges clearly liked it but i don't think i'll be potter of the week if i'm honest

01:02:03that that broken ladle is is too much the illustrations could have been a little bit better and i'm
01:02:08still thinking about the s crack in the lid there was also another crack in the soup tereen bowl but
01:02:14i do generally think that i'm going home and i've kind of just like realized that it's nice that the
01:02:21judges got the concept but um it was on a small side it's difficult my wife's always pushing me to
01:02:29be
01:02:29more positive um i just think i'm a realist i'm a pessimistic realist i think
01:02:40i'm totally out of my league i think i mean i'm happy with some of the elements but i cannot
01:02:46find out how other people have been able to put so much decoration on theirs
