00:21Hello and welcome to Offsiders, I'm Abbey Jelmy.
00:24It's one of those weekends in sport where fans simply don't know where to look.
00:29In Perth, Australia is dominating the Test match against India.
00:32While in Sydney, the Matildas are getting set for a crucial Asian Cup clash against South Korea.
00:37In Melbourne, the F1 season has started with a bang.
00:41And last night, in Brisbane and Sydney, there were thrilling finishes in the AFL and NRL.
00:49Oh, it's skyed. It's straight up. It's over the slips, Corden.
00:53And it will be over the boundary as well.
00:55Oh, Annabelle Sutherland creates history here at the Wacker yet again.
01:01Skating off the road and into the fence at high speed goes...
01:07Is that Verstappen?
01:08It is.
01:08Max Verstappen. He is out of the session.
01:11Richards looks up and goes.
01:13He's got Frazier out the back.
01:15For English. English throws him.
01:17In his cross.
01:19Dogs lead.
01:22What a win for the Western Bulldogs.
01:25And an elegant left foot shot.
01:28He's got A.
01:30The kid has won the game.
01:35Good morning. It's a pleasure to have your company.
01:37It's also a pleasure to have the company of our panel.
01:39I'm joined by Ryan Hoffman, Elyse Keller-Knight and Corbyn, Middlemass team.
01:43As sports lovers, it is just an absolute smorgasbord, Corbyn.
01:47It's arguably the most competitive week to try to get on the back page in the country.
01:50It is incredible, isn't it?
01:52I mean, the first look at so many of the AFL and NRL teams for the new year.
01:56You saw there the women's test match, which is underway in Perth at the WACA ground.
02:00Test cricket back at the WACA, which, Abby, you and I as native Sandgrop,
02:04there's a special feel to that.
02:05The Asian Cup, as you said, which is on home soil.
02:08And then there's going to be 150,000 people today at Albert Park.
02:12And really for this city here in Melbourne, an incredible stretch too,
02:15where you've got 150,000 going to the Formula One.
02:18Back that up with 80,000 tonight at the MCG.
02:21What a seven hours of sport alone,
02:23not taking into account everything else going on around the country.
02:25And don't touch your dial if you do hear some cars.
02:27We're just that close to the track that you could probably be hearing it now.
02:30But Elyse, it is for the Matildas.
02:32This is such an important opportunity to potentially win a trophy on home soil.
02:36Do you think it's been hard for them to have the same cut through as they saw as the World
02:39Cup?
02:40No, I don't.
02:41I think the attendance and the support for the Asian Cup has been awesome.
02:44We've actually already broken the record for tickets sold.
02:46So 250,000 tickets sold already.
02:49So you've broken the record in the group stages?
02:52Yep, absolutely smashed it.
02:53So previously it was held in 2010 from a tournament in China.
02:56So you can show that this tournament that we've held in Australia has really elevated it.
03:00That's phenomenal.
03:01And Ryan, you're here not in Vegas, unfortunate for you.
03:04No, I missed the Vegas trip for the second year in a row, unfortunately.
03:07But the campaign has already started for 2027 to hopefully get myself over there.
03:11But look, another fantastic exhibition of rugby league over in Las Vegas, along with the NRL,
03:18but also the Super League, just created an amazing atmosphere.
03:21And Peter Volandi's vision of five years of Vegas rugby league has been fantastic in its first three years.
03:26So looking forward to the next two.
03:27And global domination is the next vision, I think.
03:29He wants it.
03:31And so far, what we've seen with Peter Volandi is that what Peter wants, he gets.
03:36So look, who knows?
03:37Would the next five years after Vegas be Miami?
03:40Will it be London?
03:41Will it be Singapore?
03:42You don't know.
03:43But I wouldn't put anything past him.
03:45I don't know that PBL will love this because we are going to start with the AFL.
03:48And the Bulldogs were upset by Premier's Brisbane by five points in a thriller.
03:52And the Gabba last night, Corbyn, the match had incredible intensity for an opening match, didn't it?
03:57And Brisbane, would we say this is a Premiership hangover?
04:00I wouldn't go that far.
04:01I actually think this last night was good on good.
04:04So there's lots to like about both these teams out of last night.
04:08Keep in mind, by the way, the Western Bulldogs are five weeks more advanced than the Brisbane Lions.
04:12The Lions played in the grand final.
04:13The Bulldogs had the early holiday after not qualifying for the finals.
04:16They became the first 14-win team not to make it.
04:19And so they've had the extra pre-season to be ready to go on this night.
04:22And in the end, 111 beats 106.
04:25And the side that ends up winning the game kicks eight of the last 11 goals, come from 26 points
04:29down.
04:30To beat the two-time reigning Premiers on their home patch, it was a tremendous game of footy.
04:34What a way to start.
04:35And I think we're going to be talking a whole lot about those two teams the whole way through.
04:39We love a high-scoring game.
04:40What we don't like is seeing stars ruled out very early in the season.
04:43And Harris Andrews, he is going to have something to answer for for this.
04:45It was a bit of a stray elbow, let's say, on Artie Jones.
04:48And in the old matrix for the MRO, this would have been three or nothing.
04:52He's either guilty or he's not.
04:53I think the fact that he looks back over his shoulder here, he knows that Artie Jones is there.
04:57Clearly, he's not trying to hit him with the elbow.
04:59He's trying to put a block on and stop his run.
05:01But he's got it wrong and he's going to be culpable for that.
05:04We've got a player that's concussed that comes back as severe under the matrix.
05:07As I said, in the old world, that would be automatic three, at least as a starting point.
05:11I think there's a world now that the MRO has the ability to downgrade that for accidents and circumstances like
05:17this.
05:17I think he's probably looking at about one to two weeks.
05:19Yeah, the line's also looking like they'll be without humour cluggage for a while.
05:22So a few concerns there for what their team will look like in the coming weeks.
05:25But a feature of opening round has been seeing stars in new colours.
05:29I mean, yesterday, former Demon Clayton Oliver featured in the Giants midfield that steamrolled Hawthorne.
05:34He looked fit, refreshed and, it has to be said, happy after a move to the north.
05:38As does Christian Petrarca, who ran riot for the Suns against Geelong on Friday night.
05:43Then you have Charlie Curnow just bagging a casual three for the Swans in his new colours.
05:47They've all gone to strong teams.
05:50And it feels like, Ooppen, there's been a real power shift to the north, particularly with these big names.
05:54Yeah, once upon a time, everyone wanted to come to Melbourne and play for the big teams in front of
05:58the big crowds.
05:58And now it's, let's go to the warmer climates, play up there, a little bit off-Broadway.
06:02It's not the same kind of attention.
06:04This was the performance, I think, that really stood out, the Christian Petrarca one.
06:08He's only 30 years of age.
06:10And yet, because he had the catastrophic injury at Melbourne, and that really soured the latter stages of his days
06:14there,
06:15I think people felt like, you know, the Gold Coast were almost getting damaged goods.
06:18The fact that he's come out and capable of doing that, the highest-rated game of his career,
06:22they've got themselves a four-carat diamond.
06:24This guy's a star.
06:25And really, if you thought the Gold Coast were just going to be OK, they're going to be better than
06:29that.
06:29It's amazing what you get with players sometimes.
06:31Sometimes a change is as good as a holiday, and you can get that refreshness.
06:35Just experiencing something, having a new pre-season, listening to different coaches,
06:39it can really refresh a player.
06:40And I think with those three players we've highlighted, that's exactly what we've seen.
06:44A change of venue, a change of state, it can really invigorate.
06:47The change of state to the Gold Coast, though.
06:48Gold Coast, notoriously difficult to have cut-through, though, particularly for the NRL.
06:53It is, but I think with what Dima's doing up there, he's creating an atmosphere,
06:57an almost insular Melbourne-type atmosphere up there on the Gold Coast,
07:01leading into what they're about, but also keeping players' heads on the ground
07:05and being a strong taskmaster that he is, has really put Gold Coast on stage for a good year.
07:11And, I mean, it has to be said, the AFL having an opening round in the northern states
07:15where they all perform well, and the reigning premiers are the only ones that stumble it.
07:18It would have to be a win for the AFL.
07:20Yeah.
07:20I mean, the first two games were perhaps a little bit worried.
07:22They were entertaining games.
07:24There was a huge swing on night one, but, you know, one was 10 goals,
07:27the other one was nine goals, and yet yesterday it roared to life.
07:30So the Giants, missing eight of their stars, win.
07:32And last night in particular, I mean, both teams scored three figures,
07:36and ultimately the reigning premiers get rolled, having led the game by 26.
07:39So I think the AFL will be happy with that.
07:42They're going to get 80,000 there tonight, St Kilda and Collingwood.
07:45So only 10 of the 18 teams.
07:47I'm still in the basket that I'd love to see every team play to open the season.
07:51I think there's a way we can do that and still put the spotlight on the northern states
07:54at the start of the weekend.
07:56But it's not a bad compromise, five games of footy, to get us underway.
07:59Well, we've talked about stars being on show, and, I mean,
08:01we can't compete with Vegas, can we?
08:03But this is a little bit of star power that we actually saw in Sydney.
08:07Tom Hanks giving the old goal umpire salute.
08:10Did anyone think I did not have Tom Hanks at the showgrounds on my bingo card for 26 Corbin?
08:16I did not see this coming.
08:17So I'm told he's there filming Greyhound 2.
08:21I know the guys on the ABC commentary yesterday had a lot of fun
08:24trying to mix current players' names into famous titles of Tom Hanks' films
08:28over the years, and so it did provide a little bit of fodder.
08:32And, yeah, certainly he knows where the cameras are.
08:34TV cameras were able to find him yesterday.
08:36Have you got a favourite Tom Hanks film?
08:38Is there one that sort of stands out?
08:39I'm really excited for it.
08:40If it is Greyhound 2 that he's filming, I loved the first one.
08:43It was an absolute cracker.
08:44You've got to go with Forrest Gump, don't you?
08:46Run, Forrest, run.
08:47No.
08:48No, Blake?
08:49No, you're like, I'm out of this, you're going to let it go.
08:51I wasn't a fan of Thomas, or Forrest Gump.
08:53What?
08:54Yeah, no, no, no, I'll die on that hill.
08:55OK, OK, well we will take this, because we're going a bit beyond offsiders now, so we will
08:59talk about this afterwards, because we will move on.
09:01David and Margaret.
09:02We will move on to the NRL, and the Canberra-Manly clash last night was an absolute cracker.
09:09Two late tries and a penalty goal to Manly, Forrest's golden point for Ethan Sanders, got
09:13the Raiders home.
09:15Now the Raiders were one of the surprise packets of last season, Ryan, but they've started out
09:19so strongly again.
09:20Are they the real deal?
09:21Are they contenders?
09:21I mean, we know the Panthers are going to be contenders, we know the Broncos are going
09:24to be strong.
09:25Can we this early in the season go, hang on, they're going to be there or thereabouts?
09:28Well, they were the real deal last year, to be quite honest, they were the most consistent
09:32team all season, and it took an unbelievable game in the first semi-final against Brisbane
09:37to really put the handbrake on their season, a game that they thought they had already won
09:41twice, and I thought it was going to be very similar last night with them thinking they
09:45had the game won in the final seconds until a penalty goal after the siren to let Manly
09:51kick two points and send it into extra time.
09:53I was getting worried that it was going to be deja vu for them again, but look, it's what
09:58been spoken about, their new halves combination, a very young halves combination with Ethan
10:02Sanders and Ethan Strange, but look, both of those players stood up really well tonight
10:07going up against former Canberra player Jamal Fogarty, but look, I think it was an occasion
10:13of Canberra really cementing themselves and reinforcing what Ricky Stewart is about.
10:18He wants to be a tough, resilient team, and I think the worry from that was they lost a
10:22lot of confidence from that Brisbane game last year.
10:25The game of the century, they were calling it.
10:28It was an unbelievable game of rugby league, but last night they still showed that resilience,
10:32they still showed that fight back to get the win and a great confidence boost for their
10:37young half.
10:37I mean, it is a really strong way to start the season, and on the flip side, the Broncos
10:41were completely humbled by Penrith.
10:4326-0 was the loss, making it the biggest by defending Premier that we've seen in 38 years.
10:49And the Broncos, just like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get, Ryan.
10:52Yeah, certainly. Well done, Abby. Very well done.
10:55Thank you. Thank you.
10:55But look, I think this says a lot more about Penrith than what it does about Brisbane.
10:59I think Penrith, they're hurting. They're used to playing in grand finals.
11:03They didn't get to the grand final last year.
11:05They really wanted to start the season with a bang and flex their muscles.
11:08I'm not worried about Brisbane.
11:10And knowing Malcolm Maguire as a coach and knowing the talent that they have on the team,
11:14he'll get them back on the right track.
11:16It's not the way they wanted to start at the end, but let's not forget, they did go to England
11:20for the World Club show. It's not an excuse, but I reckon we'll see the benefits of Brisbane
11:24in rounds four and five.
11:26But, you know, Penrith take a bow.
11:28They're once again showing why they've got one of the best systems in rugby league,
11:31where after a major disappointment in not making another grand final last year,
11:35they start the season with a bang up north in Brisbane.
11:37We did see the star team seemingly play in Australia,
11:40while some lower teams were, lower teams, it's an unfortunate term,
11:43but teams that didn't perform as well last season were playing in Vegas.
11:46Do you think that the NRL got that right?
11:49I think with how it works around, I mean, they had two very well-supported teams,
11:54both the Bulldogs and the Dragons.
11:57They're two of the most supported teams in rugby league.
12:00Look, I think the NRL did get it right with the teams that they're sending.
12:03It's going to be interesting next year, because there's five teams remaining
12:06and only four spots.
12:08But, look, I think what they've done is they're trying to do it
12:12so you do get a bit of a rivalry game over in Vegas,
12:14and that's what they did with the Doggies and the Dragons.
12:16And we do need to talk about the Storm,
12:18because it's death taxes and seemingly Storm winning in Round 1,
12:21because they had another emphatic win.
12:22I did not see that coming.
12:24To be honest, being a staunch Storm man,
12:26I was a bit worried about Thursday night,
12:28thinking Parramatta, another pre-season.
12:30They finished off last year so well,
12:32I thought they were going to hit their straps come Round 1,
12:34but they were very disappointing.
12:36They were extremely disappointing.
12:38And for Jason Riles, it's deja vu,
12:41because they had 50 put on them Round 1 last year,
12:43and it was an absolute clinic by the Storm.
12:46And, you know, great effort from a lot of players
12:48who are filling the jerseys of fellas who are injured
12:51or have been suspended.
12:53And a very pleasing start for Craig Belmy.
12:55What do you make of the fact that the NRL,
12:57really their first game in Australia, is here in Melbourne,
12:59and the Australian rules are obviously starting their season up in Sydney?
13:03It feels like the Battle of the Codes.
13:04I don't know if it's a Volandis thing,
13:05we're hearing from him more and more,
13:06but do you feel like the Battle of the Codes
13:08is as hot as it ever has been?
13:09I think it is.
13:10And can't we all just get along?
13:12Because I think everyone...
13:14The ALF or the AFL, whatever PVL calls it.
13:16...has a place,
13:17but everyone wants to launch seasons
13:19in everyone else's backyard.
13:20But, look, very strong crowd down here in Melbourne,
13:23obviously with a huge weekend.
13:25And, look, the AFL are doing well up north.
13:27So, look, I think they complement each other really, really well.
13:30I mean, let's get to football now,
13:32because the Matildas are happy for everyone to play within themselves,
13:34because they are the most popular team in the country,
13:36and their Asian Cup campaign continues tonight against South Korea.
13:39Now, both teams are through to the quarterfinals,
13:42but there's quite a bit riding on this game
13:44because a win would allow the Tillys
13:46to avoid a tricky quarterfinal against the likes of China.
13:49They will be without Hayley Razzo,
13:50who is out with a concussion
13:53but looks strong in the 4-0 win over Iran on Thursday.
13:58Elise, where are we seeing this team at?
13:59Because it's been...
14:00Obviously, we've only had wins to this point,
14:02but they haven't been as emphatic as we perhaps would have hoped.
14:04I think the squad is building very nicely.
14:07We are on track for a great game tonight.
14:08So, to kind of sum up the situation,
14:12the team have labelled this as a must-win.
14:14They know how important tonight is to win,
14:16even though we've already qualified through the quarters.
14:18It's pretty much a game against China,
14:21ranked 17th in the world,
14:22versus a game against a Chinese Taipei,
14:25Vietnam-type team, ranked outside 40 in the world.
14:28And it's a big different scenario for us.
14:31So, obviously, there's a lot on the line.
14:33We haven't really been challenged yet in this tournament.
14:35First game, 1-0 against Philippines.
14:37Second game, 4-0 against Iran.
14:40We've had great squad rotation.
14:41We've used 20 out of the 26 players.
14:43So, we've given everyone minutes.
14:45I'm hoping to see the other players get on the field tonight.
14:48But the biggest issue for us has been the goalkeeping issue.
14:51It's been so topical.
14:52So, I'm curious to see if Arnold will be back fit tonight.
14:55She's had a minor calf that she's been dealing with.
14:57So, I mean, I would assume that Jo's rested her
15:00for these first two games with the assumption
15:02she'll be ready tonight, because she will be tested tonight.
15:05Elise, the 2022 Asian Cup,
15:08so we played Korea, we lost the quarterfinal,
15:10and that was the end of the tournament.
15:12I think you were back in the team not long after that.
15:14I've heard a couple of the players speak in the lead-up to this game.
15:17And you mentioned not just the opponent,
15:19but I think if we lose tonight or the result doesn't go our way,
15:22we could end up in Perth for a quarterfinal
15:23as opposed to playing in Sydney, so there's less travel and everything else.
15:26But how much of that is a motivating factor to this group,
15:29do you think, in a four-year cycle,
15:30waiting to get to the next Asian Cup,
15:32knowing that not only we owe Korea one,
15:34but we feel like we're capable of more,
15:35and this was the team that stopped us last time?
15:37Yeah, I mean, we were really disappointed with the 2022 performance.
15:41Bombing out in a quarterfinal was subpar
15:43for what is expected of the team.
15:45We'd been in a final since pre-2006, essentially.
15:48We've been coming first and second in this tournament for a long time,
15:51winning in 2010, in fact.
15:53So the feelings after that tournament were immense disappointment,
15:57and the fact that we're coming up against the team
15:59who actually knocked us out,
16:00and he seeded Jisoo Yuen put away that gold
16:03that we eventually lost 1-0 to.
16:06Yeah, this is a moment to kind of rectify all that
16:09and get one over them.
16:10We actually played them in two friendlies last year,
16:12and we had two wins over them,
16:13so a 1-0 and a 2-0.
16:15So the confidence is with us.
16:17Historically, head-to-head, we've had four wins,
16:18one draw and one loss.
16:20So the favour is towards Australia,
16:22so I'm expecting a win tonight.
16:24Yeah, we hope that trajectory certainly continues.
16:26But a sad part of the Asian Cup
16:28has been the plight of Iran's players
16:29as war continues at their home.
16:31They stayed silent during the national anthem
16:33early in the week
16:34after they were labelled wartime traitors
16:37on Iran's state television.
16:38They sang the anthem
16:40before the match against Australia on Thursday.
16:42Now, what happens to them
16:43when this tournament finishes
16:45is just one of the big questions,
16:46and Foreign Minister Penny Wong was asked
16:49about the team's future on Insiders
16:50a little earlier this morning.
16:52We know this regime has brutally oppressed
16:55many Iranian women,
16:57and we stand in solidarity
17:00with the men and women of Iran,
17:03and particularly Iranian women and girls.
17:06I don't want to get into commentary
17:09about the Iranian women's team.
17:13I appreciate you don't want to put them
17:14or their families back home in any greater danger here,
17:17but can I ask,
17:18has the government been able to have
17:19any direct contact with these players
17:21without their minders?
17:23I can't comment on that.
17:26Sometimes in these circumstances,
17:27Elise, a non-answer is an answer in itself.
17:29Is this just showing how delicate this situation is?
17:32Yeah, it's been...
17:33It's a very sensitive topic.
17:35I mean, everyone's pretty much operating
17:37out of fear at the moment.
17:39Everyone's too scared to say anything.
17:40Everyone's too scared to do anything.
17:42At the moment, we're all very fearful
17:44for what is going to happen
17:46to these Iranian players
17:47when they do eventually return home,
17:49because I'm assuming they do want to go home.
17:50That's where their families are.
17:51That's where they are from.
17:53And there has been media precautions
17:55put in place for press conferences.
17:56There's been lots of layers
17:57that have had to happen around the tournament.
17:59Yeah, I mean, it's interesting to think of it
18:02from a journalist's point of view.
18:03There's been caution given to them.
18:05Be careful of the questions that you're asking.
18:08You've got to put player welfare at full mind.
18:11You know, you're putting these players
18:12in a position where they have to answer questions
18:14that is essentially going to put their families
18:16in danger back home.
18:18So there's been a bit of a censor
18:20around how media press conferences
18:21have been run at the Asian Cup,
18:23which I think is really good.
18:24But it's certainly a delicate
18:26and very sensitive topic at the moment.
18:28Yeah, and I think we use the term brave
18:29very liberally in sport,
18:30but really to continue playing in a tournament
18:32when there's this much happening
18:34in your lives at home,
18:35they've really been phenomenal, haven't they?
18:37So brave.
18:38I mean, the fact that they didn't sing the anthem
18:40in that first opening game
18:42was a real statement.
18:44There's been history of this happening as well.
18:46Back in 2022 at the Men's World Cup,
18:48the male team also didn't sing the anthem.
18:51And then there were reports after this
18:53informing that their families had been threatened
18:55and et cetera, et cetera.
18:57And then, of course, next game,
18:58you see them obliging and singing the anthem.
19:01And that's what we saw in this tournament as well.
19:02So I think the salute also says something
19:05in terms of the force behind them
19:07having to do this type of thing.
19:09Well, we certainly hope that, of course,
19:11that things progress well for them
19:12and we hope that they and their families are safe.
19:14And we also hope the Tillys
19:16have a much-needed win this afternoon.
19:18But we will move on to the Australian Grand Prix
19:20because it will run and won at Albert Park today
19:22with the new rules and hybrid engines
19:24to be a major talking point.
19:26Now, McLaren have some work to do
19:28with Aussie Oscar Piastro starting in fifth.
19:30And Lando Norris is going to be in sixth on the grid
19:32for the season opener.
19:34And Piastro spoke after qualifying yesterday
19:36about the massive gap in the field
19:37between Mercedes and everyone else.
19:40Obviously, we need to find a bit of time
19:44because the sandbags well and truly got dropped out.
19:46So we looked like we were in the mix for pole
19:49and then at peak three, we got blown out of the water.
19:52That's about as much emphasis and character
19:54you get out of Oxford Piastro as well.
19:56You can tell that he's like,
19:57look, it wasn't bad, but it wasn't great.
19:58But can you explain to us, Corbyn,
20:00there's been so many changes to the cars between seasons
20:03that as Aussies, we watched Oscar and thought,
20:05oh, this year he's going to be able to challenge again.
20:07It's not that simple, is it?
20:09Not at the start.
20:09I think he will be in the long run.
20:11So you mentioned the hybrid engines.
20:13The good thing is Mercedes have the best engine
20:15and that's what Oscar Piastro is using.
20:17So the McLarens have the Mercedes engines.
20:20The reason why the silver arrows are so strong
20:22at the start of the season,
20:23and we've seen them obviously on the front of the grid here,
20:24is that they're more advanced
20:26in the other developments that are going on in the car.
20:28So I think McLaren will get there as the year progresses.
20:31Whether it happens this weekend or not is another thing.
20:34I spoke to Tim Hodges about this,
20:35who's one of my colleagues,
20:36and he's forgotten more about motorsport than I'll ever know.
20:38But he spoke about the fact that, look,
20:41if Oscar Piastro finishes the race today,
20:44he's expected to be,
20:45he will be on the podium if he's able to do that.
20:48So I think that's the big question today,
20:50is the attrition rate.
20:51It's early in the season.
20:53There's so much unknown about these cars,
20:55and we've even seen that yesterday.
20:56Verstappen obviously, you know,
20:57not even able to post a qualifying lap in his round yesterday.
21:02He's been very outspoken about the fact
21:04he's not into the rule changes,
21:05but why would you like change
21:06when you've been good for so long, right?
21:08And that's it.
21:08So one, we don't know how the cars are going to play.
21:11Two, we've got no idea how they're going to go
21:12under race conditions,
21:13which is completely different again.
21:15So it feels like we're going to learn a whole lot today
21:17at the start of the season
21:18when it comes to these cars.
21:20And for Piastri,
21:21it sort of feels like
21:22it's almost secondary leading into the new season.
21:25I don't know if that helps or hinders him
21:26around the fact that it's his home Grand Prix.
21:28I mean, often in the past,
21:29when we've had a driver in contention,
21:31whether it was Ricciardo or Webber before him,
21:33it's almost been, you know,
21:34can they handle the pressure
21:35and the expectation of the home Grand Prix?
21:37I feel like so much of that is secondary
21:39or even, you know, tertiary
21:40or whatever it turns out to be
21:41somewhere down the line in terms of factors today.
21:43First things,
21:44how do we get the car through to complete the race?
21:46And then we'll worry about all of that
21:48somewhere down the line.
21:49Well, it shows our margin of errors are so small.
21:52If he finishes,
21:53he's got to be on the podium.
21:54But the question is,
21:55if he finishes.
21:55And we know that he was devastated
21:57that he actually didn't finish last season as well
21:59because there was a lot of pressure on him
22:00as in he didn't finish at his home race.
22:01He's a Brighton boy,
22:02so he grew up around the corner from the track
22:04and Albert Park is so special for him.
22:06But Corbin,
22:06as we were just talking about global politics
22:08and how it's affecting the Matildas
22:10and obviously the Asian Cup campaign,
22:12so too it may affect the GP
22:14because there's questions about whether or not
22:16we might actually get back-to-back from pre's in Melbourne.
22:19Is this an actual story?
22:20So the next two races are sort of over to Asia
22:23for China and Japan
22:24and then races four and five of the season
22:26are currently slated in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.
22:29Now, you put your finger in the wind
22:30with what's going on in the world,
22:31you'd think that those two races,
22:33Bahrain and Saudi Arabia,
22:34are unlikely.
22:35I understand the Ellen government
22:36has said all the right things about,
22:38you know,
22:38we want to keep the door open
22:39and the possibility about holding a second race
22:41and whatever it turns out to be.
22:43I would say it's almost a 0% chance,
22:45as it stands right now,
22:46that Australia will get a second Grand Prix.
22:470.01.
22:48You're telling me there is a slight...
22:50Come on, Elliot.
22:51They'd have to keep this set up
22:52for, like, multiple weeks
22:53and go and ask any resident,
22:55knock on a door in Albert Park
22:56and ask them what they think about
22:57the fact the race is set up
22:58and even though there's 150,000 people
22:59and everything else.
23:01And where the Victorian government,
23:02you know,
23:03who financially have their issues
23:04at the moment,
23:05get banged for their buck
23:06is the fact that, you know,
23:06people come in from around Australia
23:08and around the world for this race.
23:09I'm not sure with a short run-in
23:11in three weeks
23:11whether you're actually going to get
23:12that same kind of return for the city.
23:14So, I think it would be extremely unlikely
23:17as much as I would love to see it.
23:20So, I guess my advice would be,
23:22Abi, is to enjoy today
23:23because it might be 12 months
23:24until we get another chance to do it again.
23:26All right, all right.
23:26I thought I better ask the question.
23:28We will move on now
23:28because we're going to move to cricket
23:30and Australia is dominating
23:31the test match against India in Perth
23:33with Annabelle Sutherland scoring
23:35her third consecutive test century.
23:37India trails by 20 runs
23:39with four second innings wickets in hands.
23:42So, the match, let's be honest,
23:44will well and truly probably be over today.
23:45Sutherland has six wickets for the match
23:48in a complete performance
23:49and she really is the heartbeat
23:51of this team now, Corbyn.
23:52She's incredible
23:53and her test form in particular,
23:55you've got to remember in the women's game,
23:57you might play like a test match
23:58a calendar year.
23:59If you're lucky, you might get a couple.
24:00And she's scored three consecutive test hundreds now.
24:04It's giving Elise Perry.
24:05But it makes it more impressive for me
24:07given how limited cricket
24:08that the women get the chance to play.
24:09So, it's not as if, for example,
24:12it's always great to score three test hundreds
24:13however you do it.
24:14But you could get on a hot streak, for example,
24:16and you're in form
24:16and you peel off runs
24:17against a lesser opponent
24:18or whatever it turns out to be.
24:19Her first hundred, she made 210.
24:21She waited 11 months.
24:22Second hundred, 163.
24:24Thirteen months later,
24:25comes out and scores 129 here.
24:27So, remember in cricket,
24:28it takes one ball to get you out
24:30and yet somehow she's able to peel off
24:31century knock after century knock
24:33every time she turns out in the white clothing.
24:35So, she's a special player.
24:36Lazy six wickets to go along with it
24:38and I think India need another 20 runs
24:40just to make the Aussies bat again.
24:41So, they're miles behind in this game.
24:43Talking about special players,
24:44Lisa Healy,
24:45it's been a bit of a farewell tour
24:46but this will be her final game
24:47and it seems fitting that she's going to do it in the whites.
24:49My question is,
24:50as the captain,
24:51are you in a position to put yourself up the batting order
24:53to make sure she has another swing?
24:55I think it would be un-Australian if she doesn't.
24:57How do you see it?
24:58You guys are the former athletes.
24:59How would you feel if your teammates said,
25:00hey, go out there,
25:01it's your last time
25:02and get the winning runs
25:03and have the moment?
25:04She usually bats at four.
25:05What would it look like?
25:06Yeah, pushing her up the order.
25:07If I'm her teammate,
25:07I'm pushing her up.
25:08She's up there.
25:09Yeah, it'd be a case of peer pressure
25:10because I imagine,
25:11as he said,
25:12the peers would be pushing her up to open
25:15and have a bit of a swing to finish it off
25:17but I'm sure she'd love it
25:18for the average to finish up not out.
25:20She's a character too, isn't she, Colton?
25:22She'll be so missed.
25:22There's this playfulness about Elisa Healy
25:25that I think it just will be irreplaceable.
25:28I mean, to think,
25:29you know,
25:29Lanning, Healy, Perry,
25:31you think,
25:32or, I mean,
25:33with the history of Australian women's cricket
25:35and I'm going to forget people
25:36but, you know,
25:36Belinda Clark,
25:37you sort of think
25:38if you're trying to sort of mount a,
25:40sort of a Mount Rushmore
25:41for an American term
25:42on, you know,
25:42the greatest women's cricketers
25:43we've ever had,
25:44there's a chance you have three of them
25:45in the same generation
25:46in what they've been able to do
25:48and the, you know,
25:48the evolution that women's cricket's taken
25:50while they've all been there.
25:52So Lanning's still playing
25:53but in domestic cricket
25:54we're losing Healy
25:55from the international stage here.
25:58It's sad to see them all go out
26:00in and around the same time
26:01and yet as we talked about
26:02with Annabelle Sutherland,
26:03I think Australian women's cricket
26:04is still going to be in pretty good hands.
26:05Yeah, they are in very good hands
26:06but it is one of those ones
26:07that I just can't believe
26:07that we're seeing the end of her era
26:09because it's been such a special one
26:10but it is time to move on to observations.
26:12Ryan, we'll start with you.
26:13There's a big one going on right now
26:15in the World Baseball Classic.
26:17Australia, they're playing Japan tonight.
26:19The tournament is being held in Japan
26:21and it's just been an amazing thing
26:23for Australia.
26:24Australia are 2-0
26:25after beating number two seed
26:27Chinese Taipei,
26:283-0 in the first game
26:29on the back of a Travis Benazza bomb.
26:32Let's not think Benazza is a...
26:35He was the number one draft pick
26:36in the 2024 MLB draft.
26:39A very high prospect
26:40in the Cleveland Guardians organisation.
26:43But tonight they play Japan.
26:44They kick off at 9 o'clock tonight
26:46which will be a huge game.
26:48There is...
26:48Last time Australia played Japan
26:49there was 40 million people watching.
26:51Twice the population of Australia.
26:54And I think for the ticket sales
26:56for this game
26:56there are 380,000 people
26:58waiting in the queue
26:59to get tickets
27:00for 20,000 tickets
27:01to go see this game.
27:02So it's going to be huge
27:039 o'clock tonight.
27:04And Artani, just a small name
27:05that will be competing in the game?
27:06Just a tiny one
27:07along with Yamamoto
27:08his Dodgers team mate.
27:10They'll be pitching
27:10and batting tonight.
27:12If you can get a watch
27:13it'll be very, very exciting.
27:15Will you be staying up?
27:15Oh definitely.
27:16Yeah, that's that thing.
27:17You'll be staying up.
27:18Elise, over to you.
27:19In recognition
27:20of International Women's Day
27:21I think I'd just like to call out
27:23the fact that
27:24there's a big pay discrepancy
27:26for this AFC women's tournament
27:28that we're watching at the moment.
27:30So at the moment
27:31the prize packet for the women
27:32is 1.8 mil.
27:34So they'll be shared
27:35amongst all of the teams
27:37compared to a 14.8 mil
27:39for the men.
27:40So we essentially
27:41as females
27:41getting 12%
27:42of the pay package.
27:43So the player unions
27:45are making pressure on AFC
27:46to try and close that gap
27:47at the moment.
27:48I don't think I have anything
27:49to add to that
27:49except for Happy International
27:50Women's Day
27:51and hopefully we do see
27:52some change there.
27:52Corbyn, over to you.
27:54Dennis Kometti
27:55from the Australian Football
27:56Hall of Famer.
27:57I mean
27:57what a career
27:59that he had
28:00sadly leaving us
28:01on Wednesday morning
28:03but that smooth
28:04velvet voice
28:05the quick wit
28:06the Kometti-isms
28:08as they became known
28:09his turn of phrase
28:10over the years.
28:11It's been
28:12a sad week
28:13but it's also been
28:14an uplifting week
28:15to be able to know
28:16that Dennis Kometti's
28:18legacy is secured
28:18in the history of the game
28:20and the way that
28:21we'll remember him
28:22and talk about him
28:22so fondly for years to come
28:24and to be able to see
28:25everyone this week
28:26sharing their favourite
28:26Kometti-isms
28:27I sort of remember
28:28growing up in WA
28:29as you did Abs
28:30and he used to have
28:31a whole lot of fun
28:31with the Carr brothers
28:32where Josh Carr
28:33who of course
28:33and Matt Carr
28:34his brother
28:35remember one day
28:36they tackled one another
28:37and they were both
28:38number nine
28:38and Dennis very quickly
28:39comes out with the line
28:40that's a two car collision
28:41both with the same rego
28:42and then James Walker
28:44who was a teammate
28:45of Matt Carr
28:46back in the Fremantle days
28:47as you can imagine
28:48he had some fun there
28:49saying walk in a car
28:50now that's progress
28:53he was just an icon
28:54he's someone that again
28:55coming from Perth
28:56we knew that he was
28:57so heavily involved
28:58in the NBL as well
28:59he absolutely loved it
29:00so we will give a bit
29:01of a shout out now
29:02to the Townsville Fire
29:03who won the WNBL championship
29:05as well
29:06and in the NBL
29:07we have the Wildcats
29:07who will be taking on
29:08the Sydney Kings
29:09because we know
29:09who our quarter finalists are
29:10and at South East Melbourne
29:12who will be taking on
29:13the Adelaide 36ers
29:14in the men's side
29:15of the program as well
29:15but as you mentioned
29:16Dennis Kometti
29:17just someone who
29:18he was almost Oprah
29:19in Perth
29:20he went by one name
29:21Dennis
29:21and everyone knew
29:22who you were talking about
29:23and he is just such
29:24a special commentator
29:25but team
29:25thank you so much
29:26for your time today
29:26how difficult it was
29:27to get through that many sports
29:28in half an hour
29:29is well played
29:30but that's all
29:31we will leave you with
29:32and despite the sadness
29:33as Corbyn mentioned
29:34of his passing
29:35it's been a joy
29:36to relive some magical
29:37Dennis Kometti commentary
29:38over the week
29:39here are some of our favourites
