00:00Welcome to the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, a place first visited by Christopher Columbus in 1498.
00:06And he so liked it that he named it.
00:08He called it after the three most southern peaks on the island, which were known as the Trinity Hills.
00:14Also in the act in 1594 was Sir Walter Raleigh, who brought his ships in to be caulked at La
00:19Brea Pitch Lake.
00:21The Republic is the most southern point of the Caribbean.
00:24And it's from here today that we bring you the second limited overs match between Australia and the West Indies.
00:31You know, they're keen to sort of knock us over after losing in Jamaica.
00:35So, you know, we just want to keep the ball rolling just from a morale point of view and just
00:39the fact that, you know, we are the world champions.
00:41So we've got to keep that mantle.
00:43It's going to be a sort of a hot two days.
00:45And I think what is important now, guys got to try and reserve and make sure that you've got enough
00:53energy in reserve because it's going to be difficult.
00:56And as you say, you know, maybe me, myself, being a 39 years of age, two back-to-back one
01:01-day games is going to be murder.
01:02So I'll see how the first one goes.
01:04And it depends how I'm feeling.
01:05But most certainly I'll be there.
01:18You were not all that delighted to win it, Vivi.
01:21Well, I think in these conditions you would be, you know, because it looks a little bit unsettled at the
01:24moment.
01:25And it's important, you know, when you win the toss, you can obviously take things from there.
01:29Yeah.
01:29What do you think you'll do?
01:31I think I have a little consultation, but I think the gut feeling and how I'm feeling, especially in this
01:36southern set of weather, one would always like to see the opposition back first.
01:39So you can calculate what you've got to do towards the end.
01:41So I'm hoping.
01:42These were the teams nominated.
01:44The Australians unchanged from the first limited overs match in Jamaica, where the Australians won and went to a 1
01:50-0 lead in the series.
01:51And the West Indies side, that has changed.
01:54We have Greenwich, Walsh and Patterson out.
01:57And in come Simmons and Moseley.
02:00The bowler will be Kirtley Ambrose and David Boone will take strike.
02:03It's Boone and Marsh to open the innings for the Australians who were sent in to bat.
02:07Here's Ambrose, first ball.
02:12The umpire was on his way from the stumps.
02:15That's umpire Lloyd Barker.
02:16Didn't even bother to wait, just gave the decision on the run.
02:20And it was a leg by to get the Australians off the mark.
02:26Quit the offside field.
02:28We'll see how fast the upfield is.
02:31Well, there's no great worry about that.
02:35Even though it's been raining here since 7.30, that upfield was still very fast.
02:41He's gone.
02:43Straight into the hands of Karl Hooper.
02:45David Boone in his 100th one-day international.
02:50Caught Boone, caught Hooper.
02:52Bowled by Moseley.
02:55It was a good firm stroke and Boone thought he had it away over Hooper's head, but it came through
03:00roundabout waist height and Hooper took the safe catch.
03:04That's the first wicket down and just nine on the board.
03:08New batsman, Dean Jones.
03:13That's a beautiful stroke and he'll go over the outfield just as fast as did the earlier one.
03:19Well, perhaps not quite, but still quick enough to stop Tony Gray and Phil Simmons.
03:23Well, he just eased on it.
03:26Lovely timing.
03:27Beautiful straight back.
03:29Four runs.
03:39Fine shot from Dean Jones.
03:44The boundary earlier off Ezra Moseley.
03:47It wasn't quite as convincing as that one.
03:48It's going to be Malcolm Marshall.
03:52In the air, wide of Simmons.
03:56And it beats Ezra Moseley into the fine leg boundary.
03:59A good attempt there from Moseley.
04:03This is a diving stop here, but I think it's 1-0 to Dean Jones.
04:11Straight drive from Jones.
04:13A healthy shot.
04:15The 50 comes up for Australia in the 14th over.
04:22This wasn't too well pitched up, but Jones just played a terrific arm drive.
04:27There's a shot from a bassman in form.
04:30Malcolm Marshall to take up the attack.
04:37Quite a sharp delivery there from Malcolm Marshall.
04:41That was pretty close to being called a white.
04:43I think Marsh, Dock, perhaps it would have passed just about shoulder height.
04:51Just low enough not to be called a white.
04:58Dean Jones taking on Tony Gray there.
05:02Quite a cool result.
05:05And that brings up the 50 partnership between Dean Jones and Jeff Marsh.
05:20A brilliant piece of clothing by Gus Logie.
05:23A brilliant piece of clothing by Gus Logie.
05:34And then he gives a feeling.
05:35And Dean Jones and Jeffrey Marsh still managed to find three runs.
05:39Some very, very good cricket.
05:41Yes, this is the local boy Tony Gray.
05:46That is one of the more ordinary deliveries I've seen in any grade of cricket.
06:03even Clyde
06:04the umpire couldn't quite believe
06:06what had happened there
06:07Geoffrey Marsh wants to know what's going on
06:16that's four runs
06:19from four wides
06:21to well pitched up outside
06:22they all stomp for four runs
06:24Tony Gray isn't having a happy time at all
06:32that's a very important wicket for the West Indies
06:42and they know it
06:43the hometown boy has struck
06:47this is a sort of comeback that Tony Gray needed
06:50Geoffrey Marsh trying to drive one
06:51that wasn't quite up to him
06:53it's the second wicket for Australia
06:54two for 84
06:57Alan Border
06:58the Australian captain
06:59coming out to join
07:00Dean Jones at the wicket
07:03what has been a very very eventful over here
07:06at Queen's Park
07:14and Border is on his way
07:16and what an eventful over it's been
07:18and don't the local crowd love it
07:27well let's just have a good look at this ball
07:29just brushing the glove on the way through
07:35Tony Gray will now seek a hat-trick
07:45well 25,000 voices and roaring the appeal outside the ground
07:55there's a good shout from the West Indies but
08:00Hite would have worried umpire Cumberbatch
08:02but Hooper is going to come on and this is going to speed up the over it
08:12it's carried onto the cycling track
08:15that's a big hit by Mark Waugh
08:18bounced off the concrete cycle track here at the Queen's Park Oval
08:22picked it up really well
08:23Philip Simmons medium pacer
08:28and he struck with his first ball
08:34Mark Waugh bold
08:38Australia 4 for 106
08:42Mark Waugh hitting across that one
08:44attempting to hit it through wide mid on
08:47and a nice accurate start from Phil Simmons
08:52Australia now 4 for 106
08:55new batsman is Steve Waugh
09:00and Carl Hooper now from the pavilions
09:07so that's Dean Jones on 50
09:09his second consecutive half century
09:12in these one day internationals man of the match in Jamaica with 88 not out
09:22that's a good firm hit
09:24he really gave that everything Dean Jones
09:27hit it beautifully over the top
09:359th 4 for Dean Jones
09:45well no way of stopping that one
09:48so the scoring rate starting to pick back up for Australia
09:57he's gone
09:58the good Yorker and he's out for 64
10:02Tony Gray strikes again he's been expensive but he has uh three wickets
10:06Dean Jones doing very much what Mark Waugh tried to do
10:12across to cover his off stump looking to work the ball away on the leg side but it was a
10:16very well pitch
10:17Yorker from Tony Gray it's taken the middle and off stumps
10:21and the fifth Australian wicket falls for 141
10:26Ian Healy is the new batsman coming in to join Steve Waugh
10:34it's a beautiful strike too
10:37way over long on over Desmond Haynes' head
10:40the man was brought in for Tony Gray now he's signalling to Viv Richards that he'd like him put out
10:45again
10:49and that's safely away I mentioned last over that Viv Richards had pulled in his third man to field at
10:55the short position to save the single
10:59that's gone for four way down the ground Tony Gray could hardly be said he looks pleased about it
11:09good Yorker good Yorker that's what's called for in this situation and Gray
11:14has a good full pitch delivery he's produced it a couple of times today and that was very well bowled
11:24Peter Taylor the left-hander is the new batsman taking Steve Waugh's place
11:29so it's very important that the Australians get through to two o'clock now so that the West Indies
11:34don't have a bonus of six overs
11:39good catch a long way to go down and took it easily five wickets now for Tony Gray and it's
11:46seven for 167 now it becomes even more imperative that the Australians last out in the innings for the
11:54the next uh 12 minutes otherwise West Indies will certainly have a bonus around about six overs
12:04and Craig McDermott giving himself a lot of room there
12:10and the Australians really now do need to be careful that they don't get bowled out because
12:14uh that would mean the West Indies would have all 42 overs and that would be uh well
12:22it would be almost uh handing the game to the West Indies i think
12:27Australia now struggling eight power 168. Michael Whitney uh is the number 10 batsman
12:38covers Carl Hooper under it
12:42so the Australians nine down
12:46the West Indies would have had a bonus of eight overs if the last Australian wickets had fallen those
12:52last two wickets as it was they have now exactly the same number of overs as the Australians received
12:58that's one of the tactical ploys in limited overs cricket an outstanding performance from Tony Gray
13:04nine overs he was restricted to nine and uh got through it right to the end six for 50 from
13:10those nine overs
13:14Bruce Reid was the first ball to Phil Simmons opening for the West Indies today in replacement
13:21of Gordon Greenwich who was left out of the West Indian side
13:25his his partner at the crease is Desmond Haynes at the non-striking end
13:29Haynes is playing his 50th one day international against Australia today a very experienced
13:36limited overs cricketer a very experienced cricketer
13:40Phil Simmons Greg he got a pretty bad injury in England in 1988
13:45but at age 27 he has played 26 games for the West Indies
13:54one bounce
13:55one bounce no it's over the boundary of cover but a very good hit from Phil Simmons
14:07another hometown boy doing well Tony Gray got all the wickets now it's Phil Simmons is third
14:17over the top well struck when you hit a fast bowler over extra cover for six that's a pretty good
14:24blow
14:30that's him on the way that's the first wicket to Australia Bruce Reid getting a very thin outside edge
14:36not much animation from the bowler but there's certainly some animation from the wicket keeper
14:41and there's a little bit from outside the boundary as well they don't want to see the local hero go
14:46but there it is the first wicket to Australia and to Bruce Reid
14:51just leaving Phil Simone just a fee in touch he is ecstatic
14:58that's one for 14
15:02Richie Richardson the new batsman Bruce Reid
15:07Richie Richardson
15:10Craig McDermott can't get around and cut that off
15:17well two things you don't do
15:20bowl in Desmond Haynes's pads and bowl shorter Rich Richardson
15:25pulled away quite comfortably
15:27a good bit of timing
15:36well struck
15:38no great effort by Desmond Haynes what beautiful a time
15:41Desmond Haynes and Richie Richardson have both been very successful Desmond Haynes the most successful
15:47scorer of runs in one day internationals he's got six thousand six hundred and forty six runs
15:54which is comfortably ahead of Vivian Richards who has six thousand five hundred and nineteen
15:58Richie Richardson has three thousand nine hundred and forty one runs
16:04Desmond Haynes has been in very good form during the red stripe cup here the domestic competition
16:13he's carried that form on into the one day internationals and the test match just recently
16:18he's really looking like he's enjoying his batting
16:27and he's enjoyed that run as well
16:34and so the big crowd here at queen's park oval
16:39really supporting their team well
16:46it's out caught at mid on Steve Waugh coming around Richie Richardson tapping the pitch to show that the ball
16:53held up in it but
16:54it may have been a combination of a slightly slower ball from Craig McDermott
16:58and Richie Richardson trying to belt it over the pavilion out into the main street
17:04and across into the savannah
17:06two for 47
17:09Carl Hooper is the man who comes out now
17:14water
17:18that's well run again
17:2350 up for West Indies 69 balls the Australian 50 came in 81 so in a 34 over match that's
17:30what it's been reduced to from the 42
17:33originally listed there's no rain interruption in that 42 incidentally but they only managed 34
17:42and he's gone he is gone yes there's a long lingering look from Carl Hooper
17:53but there was nothing he could do about it Whitney had just slandered it away from him in the same
17:57way
17:58as Reed slandered it away from Phil Simmons so Simmons and Hooper two of the younger players
18:05out in similar fashion Vivian Richards is the new batsman
18:11that's a fine shot by Richards it'll go all the way this outfield is very fast
18:17and a lovely firm and confident straight drive by the West Indies captain
18:22172 probably looks an easy score but it's five and over the Australians are right back in this game
18:33he's put that away very well Whitney i don't think will say anything Haynes will
18:38Haynes comes down now just asked but what about the congratulations no
18:46four runs to Haynes actually a very good shot because the ball wasn't all that short
18:51Haynes is in marvelous form
18:57he's caught behind Whitney has him
19:01and there'll be a bit between them as Haynes goes off caught behind off Whitney
19:07and Whitney leaves Haynes with a part in word or two and the West Indies are four for 78
19:13well that was one delivery that uh Desmond would probably be disappointed about not putting away
19:19it was up there in the slot for the drive and a good catch by Ian Healey
19:27it's four for 78
19:30Gus Logie from the small village of Sobo in south Trinidad
19:42now Whitney's got him that's good cricket David Boone has played it beautifully out there at square
19:48point and Whitney did wonderfully well to get back he anticipated that the throw was going to come and
19:54he made straight for the stumps looked up and Boone's throw was coming within a yard of it Logie has
19:59gone run
20:00out that's a crucial wicket for Australia five for 90 and Richards is still there on 11.
20:17that was one of the alternatives
20:25and it went very very high
20:31Alan Borda and the Australians won't be happy whilst this man's at the crease
20:37mercurial cricketer
20:39wasn't really to the pitch of that ball but the fruit with brute strength and
20:43very good timing despite the fact that he hit it reasonably high on the face of the bat
20:50it's just out of uh Borda's reach
20:55and good cricket again
21:15if i say the Australians are unpleased if there is such a word about that then it may be the
21:23understatement of the day
21:28in the air marsh caught that's what they wanted good catch too he must have been disturbed by the
21:36background there that massive spectators behind the ball as it flew towards in perfectly timed
21:42and Vivian Richards has gone for 28 foot marshmallow whitney
21:49Malcolm marshall is the new man at the crease
21:55and he's got him
21:57Dujon getting the inside edge onto the stumps a real warm-up ball from McDermott but it's done the trick
22:03for Australia
22:06and the western is definitely in lots of trouble now
22:11Dujon last recognized batsman
22:14it's seven for 113
22:18Ezra Mosley behind that helmet and grill
22:22mark war is going to be the bowler from the northern end
22:28and well taken peter taylor might not be getting a bowl but he's done his bit in the field with
22:33a fine
22:34running catch
22:38it's eight for 116
22:42kirtley ambrose who played quite a useful knock at sabina park
22:51and under it is peter taylor at mid-wicket
22:55and he takes it very good pair of hands peter taylor good change of pace there from mark war
23:02a good slow ball here by mark war ambrose was through the shot before the ball had arrived
23:09peter taylor judging it well thank you currently ambrose the parts nine for 126
23:18tony gray has just received writing instructions from malcolm marshall he's on five the west indies need 46
23:25off 18 deliveries
23:33and what a brilliant catch by david boone
23:36malcolm marshall is going back to his crease
23:39now he has a look and he's discovered that david boone has caught it it was a brilliant diving effort
23:45by boone well there's a great catch to end a great day for the australians the card of the innings
23:50the
23:50west indians 127 all out haynes 45 richards 27 and simmons 13
24:02and the bowling figures for australia reid one wicket mcdermott three
24:06whitney took three and mark war two for six at the very end the australians now leading by two nil
24:13in
24:13this series having won the first match at sabina park now this is a double header weekend here
24:20in port of spain trinidad at queen's park oval so the australians being applauded off the field
24:28and they now take a two nil lead in
24:31you
