00:00today's uh very very important game first of all the australians they've made one and force change
00:05boone is ill and mark taylor comes in and for the west indians patterson is in and gredings
00:10comes in at the top of the order to open up with desmond haynes and out go malcolm marshall and
00:15ezra mosley is that a hit yeah it is a hit um we're going to bat first again you know
00:24this game
00:25you know can't say die you know you never you never say die and uh i think we've got a
00:31last
00:31chance today to salvage some sort of pride in a sense of uh getting back into to this particular
00:35series and uh i'm certainly gonna give it our best shot here is the first ball and it starts with
00:44a
00:44wide well this is not a bad start by uh by ambrose
00:57two wives let's rewind and start all over again
01:04another wide a hat-trick of rides to start off the match with
01:14that's another one four wides and this is a terrible start for the west indies
01:23and a no ball now well we're scheduled to go 50 overs today
01:30it's going to be a long time for us to get through the first one
01:35and we're going to have patrick patterson who's going to come into the attack
01:47so the first run coming from the bat to mark taylor
01:57just over his head very fast outfield he didn't get much bat on it but that's four runs
02:07kirtley ambrose the bowler and that's off the back of the bat he's gone haynes has him
02:14i surely have lost their first wicket desmond haynes at backward point
02:20full pitch outside leg stump taylor looking to uh turn it down to fine leg but right off the back
02:27of the
02:27bat and desmond haynes takes a good diving catch so australia have lost their first wicket with 13 on the
02:33board
02:37new batsman is the top scorer for australia in both the previous two matches dean jones
02:46that's a good shot it was in the air but it was over mid record and it hit the fence
02:50with a fearful thump
03:01beautifully placed that's been a feature of jeff marsh's batting today
03:05he was nicely over that square cut but the placement was superb
03:11again the bad ball being put away short wide of the off stump and put away for four runs
03:22phil simmons comes on now from the members end
03:27the chance gone begging there jeffrey dujon going to his right hand
03:37that's the sort of form we're talking about
03:46oh this is a savage looking full shot short and he's got a full floater back and and it just
03:52rockets
03:53to the boundary this is this shot of a man in form
04:00with the enriches
04:02in position that's vivian richards 100th catch unlimited over internationals he's the second
04:09player to have done it a very important wicket there for the west indies easy catch to be britches
04:15and the score two for 82. mark war is the new batsman
04:22wicket takers for the west indies kirtley ambrose and tony gray
04:28and that brings up the australian 100
04:38oh good delivery he's been bowling a number of yorkers and bowling them pretty well
04:43that was an excellent one that uh tends to make up for the misfield in the last over
04:50an excellent ball here from phil simmons in swinging yorker john wanted them better than that
04:59isn't he happy australia 1-1-6 for three
05:05alan border well he'll have a longer stay out in the middle than he had yesterday he was there for
05:10one ball yesterday this time he's at the non-striker's end
05:20there's 50 to jeffrey marsh
05:27well he's got that away that's the first ball he's really timed
05:31and he's got it through he's found the gap and that's a good boundary for border
05:36three for 149. patrick patterson had just four overs very expensive patterson four overs for 28 in his first spell
05:46and immediately a success there for patrick patterson so he now has one for 28.
05:57alan border never looked totally comfortable today he struggled with his timing he struggled to try and
06:03pick the run right up this time he's just playing at one just a little bit wide going further away
06:08he just helped it on its way through to jeffrey dujon very happy patrick patterson
06:15alan border not quite so happy to say a little bit frustrated with the
06:18the situation the crowd here enjoying it four for 165.
06:26steve war just having a quick chat there with jeffrey marsh i think the subject probably would
06:31have been overs and uh war perhaps suggesting to jeffrey marsh that we better get a move on because
06:37we're not going to get the full 50 overs
06:43steve war immediately off the mark
06:44yes jeffrey marsh with a bit of a head cold wouldn't be the ideal place to be out in the
06:51middle here at queens park oval very humid but he's a very tough man the farmer from wandering
07:01and he gets a wicket immediately
07:07so uh jeffrey marsh can head off and have a cold shower now as tony gray has done the job
07:13for his
07:14skipper the regulation warm-up ball here for tony gray as he comes back for a new spell
07:20just rolls the arm over and i think it was the lack of pace more than anything else that
07:25beating jeff marsh takes the top of middle stump tony gray is a relieved man
07:30the crowd are excited australia are five for 191.
07:36ian healy comes to the crease
07:41gray really rushing in now but that's going to cost him four
07:44the educated edge there from ian healy
07:51tony gray a bit disappointed but ian healy will be happy with the shot
07:57that brings up the 200 for australia in the 43rd over
08:02of 260 balls there's some polite applause from the crowd around the ground
08:09ian healy it's gray to heal
08:16that's beautiful play that is very good tactical awareness from ian healy
08:24he summed this up perfectly now i'm not too sure about him if he's distressed or he might have
08:30damaged the muscle as well but that was a good shot
08:34a much better shot than the last one just helping it behind square now there's just
08:39that light drizzle michael holding was talking about coming across that will add to the australians
08:45problems will make the ball a little greasy for the bowlers but it could abbreviate the innings if
08:52it becomes heavier
08:58no better example could michael holding of often than with that delivery
09:08australia 225 for six peter taylor is the new batsman this is the 48th over
09:16and healy swayed now there's no way the fielder out at deep square is going to get that
09:20he didn't see it for a moment in the same way as jeff marsh couldn't pick the ball up yesterday
09:25losing it in the background of the crowd and a good shot from ian healy
09:32a lot of space out there on that one side
09:39that's into the gap but he hasn't timed it they'll certainly get two and healy's going to look for three
09:47and will get it injured foot and all and that is a bad throw from one of the best fielders
09:54in the
09:55side so healy goes back for four
10:03yorker again well there's no doubt about that being a good ball on any ground that was a terrific effort
10:10from the australians and particularly healy at the end of the innings with his 33 on out seven for
10:15245 jeff marsh in great difficulty out there a super 81 and 33 for healy with everyone chipping in jones
10:23played another good inning seven for 245 and for the west indies ambrose three for 37 two for 59 for
10:29gray
10:29and one for 35 for simmons on paper that australian total of 245 looked great but then the rain came
10:35and the umpires changed the conditions they started play again at 3 11 181 is the target 36 overs to
10:43be
10:43bowled and 11 overs for the fielding restrictions
10:49that is out that's the first wicket to the australians it probably would have been a wide
10:53phil simmons has nobody but himself to blame here ball well wide of the half storm
11:00he did well to get that close to it and the western is one for three ritchie richardson the new
11:06batsman
11:06for the west indies
11:11richardson realizing that they've got to get runs as well as exist
11:15steve war doing the chasing but he can't manage to catch up to it even though the outfield's wet
11:25which richardson not quite timing either of those pull shots but they've both gone
11:29to the boundary quite easily
11:39excellent shot from desmond haynes just using his wrists to place that ball make sure he got it past
11:46down border
11:46that was a super shot change of bowling now peter taylor didn't bowl yesterday but it's on today
12:08he's got that away and he's got it away from the field as well before
12:13so taylor being too short and giving richardson the room to cut for four
12:24and there's a shot with a great degree of improvisation for another four
12:29in the exact opposite direction
12:34it's in the air and border just can't reach it
12:39agonizingly close
12:43there's a bowling change here steve war
12:51and that's a very good half century by richard richardson
13:03west indies are 2-0 down in the series
13:06and the crowd here has come to see the west indies pull back one
13:13he's bowled him so steve was made the breakthrough for australia
13:19and haynes goes with the west indies at two for 72. gordon greenwich comes out well plastered
13:31and that's four more in the opposite direction he did it off peter taylor
13:37he's now had 10 fours when taylor came on he hit him down behind point and then he
13:43took another one behind square this time off steve war the same thing down behind point and now behind square
13:53it's gone away again and that's gone for six this time he's hoisted it over just inside the boundary
14:00some of the spectators sickening six but it fell just inside the boundary
14:04and nevertheless it's the third four of the innings of the oval
14:11there's a good hit
14:15what super timing
14:19he's just picked that up with a nice sweet little jab away on the onside
14:27and hit it half a dozen rows back
14:32jones
14:34absolutely no idea where it went
14:36lost it in the crowd looked as they lost it from the moment
14:40it left the back same thing happened to jeff marsh yesterday it's the end of the over and it's two
14:45for
14:46128
14:49and the crowd really enjoying this uh batting of richie richardson's
14:56could be over border is getting under it
14:59and he takes the catch so richardson out for 90
15:03a pity because that innings really did deserve a century
15:09standing of the way
15:10standing of the way is on there for richard richardson
15:13the west indies three for one 32
15:18gus logey is now coming out to the crease
15:23beautifully hit that brings up the 150 for the west indies
15:26one bounce into the wire
15:37once again he beats mid off
15:49nine runs required 18 balls in which to get them
16:01make that five runs required 17 balls to get them
16:18and
16:19that single takes gordon bridge along to 40
16:22and leaves the west indies with just four runs for victory
16:31and there's logies hit the winning runs that's what the crowd won
16:35when the west indies batted after the rain they had to make 181 runs of 216 balls or 36 overs
16:41to
16:42win the game had the game been played under the australian playing conditions they would have had to
16:46make 220 of 216 balls quite a difference and as a result of all the confusion the international
16:52career conference is under pressure now to come up with a worldwide law covering this aspect of the game
16:58the west indies won the match and richie richardson's 90 came off only 93 balls and included some great
17:04shots alan just thinking back to the third final in sydney you always seem to be on the
17:09the wrong end of the the rain yeah well i suppose the situation we've got in australia now
17:13does protect the side that bats first a little bit better but over here you've just got to put up
17:19the rules and uh yeah we were disadvantaged a little bit but still we're in the hunt there for
17:24a while but uh richie richardson's innings uh you know really changed the course the match for them
17:28richie you must have been pretty pleased with that innings yeah very much so um when i woke up this
17:32morning i felt good i knew i was going to play right what about the pitch a little bit slow
17:36was it
17:37yeah it's uh very slow i don't think it's a very good one day wicked even though it was a
17:41great game
17:42and you know some great innings were played i think it's a bit too loose and a bit too dry
17:46and um
17:47i mean you have to be exceptional to really play well in our kid i guess the west sydney's really
17:51needed that victory to build the confidence up yeah morale was a bit low after losing the two first
17:58to one day matches but uh we knew that we had it in us and uh once we got it
18:02right we'll be playing
18:03some great cricket and we look forward to in the series i guess the uh the room for improvement is
18:08really with the bowling and fielding isn't it yeah um as it has been saying you know quite for the
18:13guys
18:14uh getting on a bit and uh we've had a lot of cricket and uh we probably need to work
18:18a little
18:18bit harder but a lot of guys are tired and um we're not as as good as we used to
18:22be in the field
18:23especially and i think that is setting us back a little bit it's nice and the boys in the middle
18:26of the bat you know it is certain certainly very pleasurable all right in the dressing room a
18:31pretty happy one i guess we're in great spirit you know well it keeps the series alive which is uh
18:35you know good for them i would have liked to have wrapped it up today but certainly once we get
18:38to
18:39barbados it'll be on again and uh i think we're just going to it's just going to be a good
18:42series
18:43all around hello
